But it is the frozen tombs of the Altai, where organic materials are well preserved,

that provide the most vivid and detailed insight into nomad dress. Men

wore shirts of woven hemp or kendyr fibres, stitched with fine red woollen braid.

Over the shirts they wore longer tunics, well-tailored and covered with appliqué

designs in cut-out leather and gold. One of the tunics was made simply of
