<strong>2019</strong> YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR<br />

Mr Gurtej Sohal<br />

Gurtej has continuously been selfless and<br />

devotes his time serving and helping the<br />

Community. Gurtej has been involved in<br />

3 major organisations this year: St John<br />

Ambulance South Australia, Australian Air<br />

Force Cadets (6 Wing and Oaktree the<br />

‘Young People Lead Movement to end Poverty’). Gurtej has<br />

achieved a lot at a young age and has undertaken a lot of<br />

responsibility too. Gurtej is a hard worker and an enthusiastic<br />

individual who always puts others first.<br />

Gurtej is always working hard to ensure that the Community<br />

becomes a better place. He constantly mentors new young<br />

first aiders and ensures everyone in the division is passionate<br />

about providing volunteer first aid.<br />

At Air Force Cadets, he provides leadership to his squadron<br />

and is a role model to future leaders. Gurtej helps cadets<br />

develop an interest in the Australian Defence Force and<br />

aviation in general. Gurtej and his peers are constantly<br />

working hard to end poverty.<br />

NAIDOC Award<br />

NAIDOC Youth Awards recognise the<br />

sporting, educational, musical, artistic,<br />

cultural or Community service achievements<br />

of a young Aboriginal person who lives in the<br />

City of Campbelltown.<br />

Kaya Scott<br />

Kaya Scott was Council’s <strong>2018</strong> NAIDOC Youth Award Winner.<br />

Kaya grew up in Ceduna and moved to Adelaide boarding<br />

at Rostrevor College. Kaya takes a leadership role to support<br />

younger Aboriginal students transitioning to boarding school<br />

from home. He is part of the Indigenous Youth Leadership<br />

Program and South Australian Aboriginal Sports Training<br />

Academy. Kaya is pursuing an AFL career but also focusing<br />

academically to study law enforcement or forensic science<br />

post school.<br />
