EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 

STEFANO CATALANI 

Dear friends, 

There is no better way to start the decade than with an exhibition celebrating 

Gage’s 30th anniversary. 2020 Visions: Gage Academy of Art at 30 embodies 

the spirit of the school’s past, present and future through a selection of 70 works 

by 40 of our instructors who, with their dedication to teaching, partake every day 

in crafting the school’s ethos. You are all invited to experience 2020 Visions free 

of charge, every day through April 13th, in the Phyllis Lamphere Gallery on the 

2nd floor of the Washington State Convention Center. 

An extensive selection of opportunities to study and expand your skills with 

these exceptional teachers is here in the Spring 2020 catalog! 

First off, registration for Summer Youth programs is now open! Our Summer 

Programs for both kids and teens will inspire your young artists with fun and 

unique opportunities for creative expression. Check out our online catalog and 

enroll before classes are sold out! 

And I am super excited to announce five outstanding workshops. Such a stellar 

line up does not happen often:

· Clive Smith returns from New York City to teach Contemporary Portrait Painting 

in Oil. Clive is the 1999 winner of the BP Portrait Award First Prize at the National 

Portrait Gallery, London, England! 

· The one and only Dale Zinkowski returns to teach Portrait Drawing on Toned 

Paper. Dale is an enthralling teacher, as generous with his students as he is 

demanding with himself 

· Gage’s very own Atelier Instructor Tenaya Sims is teaching Large Scale 

Figurative Painting. If you ever wanted to challenge yourself with a large painting 

this is your chance! 

· Returning to teach at Gage after a long hiatus, Michael Howard, former 

Associate Professor of Painting at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, will 

be opening your eyes with Using Color Now 

· Italian sculptor Alessandro Gallo (who has shown at venues such as the Venice 

Biennale and the Royal Academy of Arts in London) will be teaching his first ever 

Gage workshop: Strange Encounters: Storytelling with Clay Figures. The cover of 

this catalog is his! 

As we look ahead to the next 30 years, Gage continues to serve the community 

by offering the profound and transformative journey of art.

internationally renowned artist, Christo, as he and his team wrap 

Paris’s Arc de Triomphe in shiny silver-blue fabric and bright red rope, 

transforming one of the city’s most famous monuments into something 

jewel-like and transcendent. This monumental artistic intervention will 

only be in place for 2 weeks and you can be there!

The Studio Arts Intensive is a unique and innovative program 

combining a broad range of studio courses with professional 

development and cohort activities designed to introduce and 

connect you with the local art community. Adult students of all 

ages have the opportunity to develop a comprehensive portfolio 

for admission into a university, atelier, or to bridge their pursuit 

in the visual arts into a full time career.

ATELIER PROGRAMS 

NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 2020/2021 

The globally-recognized Gage Atelier program is designed for artists 

who wish to pursue mastery in painting, drawing, and sculpture under 

the guidance of renowned teaching artists. Atelier students study in an 

immersive, stimulating, and communal environment that fosters a serious 

work ethic to master their craft and embrace fine arts as a career. 

Gage offers Atelier programs in classical and modern traditions. 

Requirements for admission are a motivation to learn and a willingness 

to undertake a commitment of one-to-four years toward artistic 

development. Ateliers require a portfolio submission, however an 

advanced portfolio is not crucial.

The full-time Aristides Atelier 

focuses on classical drawing 

and painting founded 

in traditional academic 

techniques. Students begin 

with drawing and advance 

to full chromatic paintings as 

they develop the vocabulary 

to create well-executed and 

sensitive works of art. 

JULIETTE ARISTIDES is 

the author of “Beginning 

Drawing Atelier,” “The 

Classical Drawing Atelier,” 

“The Classical Painting 

Atelier,” and “Lessons in 

Classical Drawing.” She 

exhibits in solo and group 

shows nationally and 

internationally.

FLACK ATELIER 

GEORGETOWN | CORE DRAWING 

The Flack Core Drawing Atelier is a part-time Atelier solely devoted to 

the craft of drawing with an emphasis on the human figure. Students 

focus on understanding how to create the figure based on observation 

and gain a profound understanding of its construction. 

GEOFF FLACK holds an MFA in drawing from the New York Academy 

of Art and a BFA in drawing from Colorado State University. He combines 

his academic expertise with his profound personal talent to make 

a highly focused and engaging part-time atelier program designed for 

artists of all levels.

MAGRATH ATELIER 

CAPITOL HILL | SCULPTURE 

The Magrath Sculpture Atelier is a multi-year, part-time Atelier 

designed to confer the core disciplines needed to become a practicing 

figurative sculptor at a high level of excellence. 

MICHAEL MAGRATH has spent most of his life in the Pacific Northwest. 

He has studied and taught at The University of Washington, the 

Florence Academy of Art in Italy, The Art Academy of London, and, 

since 2005, Gage Academy of Art.

KANG-O’HIGGINS ATELIER 

CAPITOL HILL | CONTEMPORARY 

Challenging and inspiring for artists of all skill levels, the fulltime 

Kang-O’Higgins Atelier empowers artists with the tools and 

techniques to express their individual vision and develop their own 

artistic voice. 

MARK KANG-O’HIGGINS is a fine artist living and working in Seattle. 

His work has appeared in prestigious publications and is included in 

public and private collections both nationally and internationally. 

FAIGIN ATELIER 

CAPITOL HILL | STILL LIFE 

Instructor and Gage Co-founder Gary Faigin uses still life as a vehicle 

to teach the basics of representation, including value, drawing, and 

perspective, as well as paint-specific techniques like glazing, impasto, 

and control of edges.

GARY FAIGIN is the Co-founder and Artistic Director of Gage Academy 

of Art. Faigin trained at the Art Students League of New York and at the 

École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Faigin is author of 

“The Artist’s Complete Guide to Facial Expression.”

GEORGETOWN ATELIER 

GEORGETOWN | IMAGINATIVE REALISM 

The Georgetown Atelier is a full-time program specializing in classical 

drawing, classical painting, and uses guiding principles of the classics 

as a flexible system that students can shape to the needs of their own 

vision. 

TENAYA SIMS has both extensive training as a classical artist and 

experience as an industry professional. He designed Georgetown Atelier 

around the strengths of his experience in both territories.

TROWBRIDGE ATELIER 

GEORGETOWN | MODERNIST 

In the part-time Trowbridge Atelier, students rigorously engage with 

color theory, figurative oil painting, collage, and mixed-media drawing— 

all in the service of building a personal, visual vocabulary to develop a 

unique body of work. 

KIMBERLY TROWBRIDGE received her MFA from the University of 

Washington in 2006 and BFA in 2003 from Indiana University in 

Bloomington. She was a 2014 and 2016 Neddy Award Finalist in Painting 

and a 2014 Artist Trust GAP recipient.

Gage Capitol Hill — Gage Academy of Art is 

located in the St. Nicholas school building, 

1501 10th Avenue East, beside St. Mark's 

Cathedral on North Capitol Hill. The Gage 

main entrance at the Capitol Hill location is on 

the south end of the building.

PARKING 

Gage is an urban campus. Unrestricted 

parking is available along 10th Avenue 

and select side streets. All neighborhood 

parking is unrestricted on Sundays. Those 

wishing to park on campus for non-cathedral 

purposes must use the lower south lot 

and pay for parking using the Passport Parking 

app (request zone #1989). The parking 

rate is $1.50/hour (total with taxes and fees 

amounts to $2.18/hour). 

TRANSPORTATION 

Gage Academy of Art in Capitol Hill is 

located east of I-5, south of 520, and four 

blocks north of Broadway on Capitol Hill. 

It is on the line of Metro Bus 49. Gage 

Academy of Art in Georgetown is located 

east of WA-509 and west of I-5. It is a block 

southwest from South Michigan Street, 

where Metro Bus 131 and 132 stop.

ART SUPPLIES 

Class and workshop materials are 

posted on the class webpage. Adult 

students provide all art supplies and 

should expect to pay $50 or more 

to purchase the required materials. 

Gage provides oderless solvents for 

all oil painting programs. Gage does 

not allow the use of Liquin or any 

other highly toxic mediums in studios. 

Gage Youth Programs include 

all art supplies.

Submission of your registration constitutes acceptance of all terms and conditions stated in this catalog/website and agreement that Gage 

Academy of Art (Gage) cannot be held responsible or liable for any act or for any injury, illness, death, damage, loss, accident, delay or 

irregularity which may occur during the course of any program. Gage assumes no responsibility for losses or additional expenses due to 

influences beyond its control. Personal effects, artwork and art supplies are students’ sole responsibility at all times. Gage reserves the right 

to cancel any program in which case it is liable only for any fees paid to Gage Academy of Art. Gage reserves the right to reschedule any 

program or replace any instructor without refund. Gage reserves the unconditional right to terminate enrollment in the event of unreasonable 

or disruptive conduct or failing to follow Gage’s student policies and rules; and Gage may do so without any refund. No refund will be 

made for early departure or deviation from the Gage schedule and program registration shall be nontransferable. Publicity waiver: Unless 

informed otherwise, Gage considers photographs and video taken of students and their artwork to be permissible for publication in Gage

Students who wish to cancel their place in a program must notify the Gage office by telephone or email to qualify for tuition refund or 

tuition credit. Tuition credits must be applied toward Gage programs within one year. All tuition credits are nontransferable. See Atelier and
