Around the <strong>City</strong><br />

JOSEPH TRINKLE<br />

Joe Tr<strong>in</strong>kle (affectionately known to his colleagues as<br />

JoJo) has the monumental job <strong>of</strong> handl<strong>in</strong>g all daily sports<br />

field usage permit requests for our Parks & Recreation<br />

Department. As the Head Recreation Leader for Athletics,<br />

he also oversees all adult athletic leagues and programs,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g basketball, volleyball, Pickleball, football and corn<br />

hole.<br />

Orig<strong>in</strong>ally from New York (both Pooghkeepsie and the<br />

Bronx), JoJo ultimately completed his educational degree<br />

<strong>in</strong> Florida, receiv<strong>in</strong>g a Bachelor’s degree <strong>in</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

Supervision and Management from Daytona State College.<br />

JoJo has two great passions <strong>in</strong> life: his three children and<br />

his love for sports and fitness. His position <strong>in</strong> athletics<br />

for the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>in</strong>deed re<strong>in</strong>forces both <strong>of</strong> these<br />

commitments, leav<strong>in</strong>g time for him to nurture his loves for<br />

both.<br />

Three Fun Facts about JoJo:<br />

1. He advocates for his youngest child, a son who suffered a<br />

BPI <strong>in</strong>jury at birth.<br />

2. He has been a basketball player s<strong>in</strong>ce he was 5 years old. He<br />

played for varsity beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the n<strong>in</strong>th grade, received All-<br />

State honors and was recruited to play for many colleges.<br />

3. He is the third <strong>of</strong> four sibl<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

HEATHER PRIESTAP<br />

As Animal Control Officer for the <strong>City</strong>, Heather Priestap<br />

and her division colleagues work extremely hard every day<br />

to ensure the safety <strong>of</strong> our pets. ”It’s so important that our<br />

community knows that our goal is to educate residents on<br />

how to improve their pet/owner relationship. Animal welfare<br />

is why we are here for residents. We want to educate them –<br />

we DO NOT want to take pets away.”<br />

Heather handles everyth<strong>in</strong>g from Animal Licens<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

Animal Cruelty cases. She is <strong>in</strong>volved with <strong>in</strong>jured animals<br />

found on the streets and she helps teach people how to<br />

best care for their lov<strong>in</strong>g pets. She began work<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>Palm</strong><br />

<strong>Coast</strong> <strong>in</strong> 2002, work<strong>in</strong>g as a receptionist at the front desk<br />

<strong>of</strong> our first <strong>City</strong> Hall – the library. She eventually moved to<br />

Human Resources and f<strong>in</strong>ally landed <strong>in</strong> her current Code<br />

Enforcement Department <strong>in</strong> 2006. She holds an Associate’s<br />

degree <strong>in</strong> Crim<strong>in</strong>al Justice and a Bachelor’s degree <strong>in</strong> Public<br />

Adm<strong>in</strong>istration from Flagler College. She is also a certified<br />

Animal Control Officer.<br />

Three Fun Facts about Heather:<br />

1. She loves her family.<br />

2. She also loves tak<strong>in</strong>g photos. Her subjects are <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

family and friends, especially those who can’t afford to hire<br />

someone.<br />

3. She likes to work on crafty th<strong>in</strong>gs with her sister<br />

and friends. She’s started mak<strong>in</strong>g hand-knitted<br />

blankets which she plans to donate to local charities.<br />

Tennis Star Reilly Opelka<br />

headl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sponsor FOR<br />

PALM COAST — Tennis star Reilly Opelka is used to<br />

stepp<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>in</strong> a big way.<br />

He’s a New York Open and Junior Wimbledon<br />

Champion, after all.<br />

But this week, Opelka is stepp<strong>in</strong>g up to give back to<br />

the community he called home as a teenager.<br />

Opelka himself will be the headl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sponsor <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Open: A USTA Pro Circuit Event. The<br />

tournament will be held <strong>Feb</strong>. 3 - 9 at the <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong><br />

Tennis Center, where Opelka spent time hon<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

skills before jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the USTA Player Development<br />

program <strong>in</strong> Boca Raton.<br />

Now stand<strong>in</strong>g 6 feet <strong>11</strong> <strong>in</strong>ches, Opelka, 22, has<br />

developed a masterful serve that netted him over<br />

1,000 aces <strong>in</strong> 2019 and he cont<strong>in</strong>ues to expand his<br />

versatile skillset.<br />

He soared to No. 38 worldwide <strong>in</strong> the Association <strong>of</strong><br />

Tennis Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals (ATP) and just took part <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Australian Open, a Grand Slam tournament, this past<br />

weekend. In 2019 alone, he racked up four w<strong>in</strong>s over<br />

top 10 opponents — three aga<strong>in</strong>st fellow American<br />

star John Isner.<br />

Even with this meteoric rise, he hasn’t forgotten the<br />

city where he grew up, that his parents, George and<br />

Lynne, still call home.<br />

Opelka was awarded the Mayor’s Next Generation<br />

Award <strong>in</strong> 2019 by <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Mayor Milissa Holland,<br />

as a role model for what <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong>’s youth are<br />

capable <strong>of</strong> achiev<strong>in</strong>g. His father accepted the award<br />

on his behalf.<br />

“We weren’t aware <strong>of</strong> the rich tennis tradition <strong>in</strong> <strong>Palm</strong><br />

<strong>Coast</strong> when my career took the family here 18 years<br />

ago,” George Opelka said. “The history, Tom Gullikson<br />

and the <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> lifestyle provided Reilly with a<br />

tremendous pathway to opportunity. With that said,<br />

Reilly is thrilled to give back and sponsor the <strong>Palm</strong><br />

<strong>Coast</strong> Open, an <strong>in</strong>ternational tournament that has<br />

been a stopp<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t for several players currently<br />

“We are so proud <strong>of</strong> all that Reilly has accomplished,<br />

has given back to this city shows his strong character<br />

and <strong>in</strong>spires the next generation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> to be<br />

great. We are so grateful to have him.”<br />

“The <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Open is one <strong>of</strong> my favorite events,<br />

and I’m excited to see more community <strong>in</strong>volvement<br />

and partnerships this year,” Mayor Holland said.<br />

“Events like this showcase our amenities, help br<strong>in</strong>g<br />

our community together and raise our quality <strong>of</strong> life.”<br />

<strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Open Info<br />

The <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Open: A USTA Pro Circuit Event<br />

will be held <strong>Feb</strong>ruary 3 - 9 at the <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Tennis<br />

Center. The tournament will be showcas<strong>in</strong>g some <strong>of</strong><br />

the f<strong>in</strong>est up-and-com<strong>in</strong>g tennis players <strong>in</strong> the world!<br />

The <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Open will host: 32-Qualify<strong>in</strong>g Draw,<br />

32-Ma<strong>in</strong> Draw S<strong>in</strong>gles, 16-Ma<strong>in</strong> Draw Doubles. The<br />

total prize pool is $25,000.<br />

Schedule<br />

<strong>Feb</strong>ruary 3rd 6pm-8pm Pro-Am and Players Party<br />

Watch tennis pros and amateurs compete <strong>in</strong> the Pro-Am.<br />

M<strong>in</strong>imum donation $50 to compete <strong>in</strong> match. Donations<br />

are suggested for spectators and Food will be available<br />

for purchase.<br />

<strong>Feb</strong>ruary 6th 4pm-7pm Plated <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong><br />

Enjoy a night <strong>of</strong> neighborly bites featur<strong>in</strong>g small plates<br />

from participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> restaurants. This event<br />

is hosted by <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Observer. Ticket prices range<br />

between $20-$40.<br />

Free tennis cl<strong>in</strong>ics and other <strong>in</strong>teractive activities for<br />

children <strong>of</strong> all ages and skill levels. Pre-registration is<br />

Get outdoors and get active - jo<strong>in</strong><br />

us for the Mayor’s 90/90 Challenge!<br />

The challenge is to move at least<br />

a mile a day for the 90 days from<br />

Jan. 6 to April 4. You can choose<br />

your own form <strong>of</strong> exercise. Log <strong>in</strong><br />

to <strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> Connect and record<br />

your progress throughout the<br />

month. Everyone who completes<br />

the Challenge will receive a prize.<br />

an average <strong>of</strong> one mile per day.<br />

Whether it’s walk<strong>in</strong>g, bicycl<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

tennis, runn<strong>in</strong>g or another exercise,<br />

You’ve resolved to get <strong>in</strong>to shape for<br />

the New Year, but how do you get<br />

started?! Take the first step toward<br />

better health with the Mayor’s<br />

90/90 Challenge, which is kick<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The new Mayor’s 90/90 Challenge<br />

works, shops, plays or exercises <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Palm</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> is welcome to jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

the fun. The Challenge is open to all<br />

ages, and families are encouraged<br />

to participate together!<br />

Participants can choose their<br />
