CFM56-5C – Advanced Engine Interface Vibration Monitoring (AEIVM) system
upgrade: software introduction (19-12-7200-01)
Reference: CFM56 Fleet Highlites article (18-01-7200-03), January 2018, “AEIVM System upgrade”
This article informs CFM56-5C operators that the new CFM56-5Cpowered-A340
Advanced Engine Interface Vibration Monitoring Unit
(AEIVMU) algorithm is available on the Meggitt portal. Refer to the
January 2018 Fleet Highlites article (link) for background.
Background
The AEIVMU was introduced on the Airbus A340 in June 2010 by
Airbus SB A340-73-4018 to help detect no.3 and no.4 bearing
degradation. Three algorithms (4R, 4L and 3B) analyze the vibration
broadband during various flight phases and trigger an alert (ACMS
report 34) when a signature surpasses a specified threshold. The
new 4L+ algorithm is being added to the existing algorithms to
improve detection by performing an analysis during the sub-idle
start phase.
CFM, Meggitt and Airbus have conducted lab tests and flight tests to
validate this new software configuration.
Please contact Meggitt Technical Publication Department :
techpubs@ch.meggitt.com to obtain SB 201-73-009 and a
Username/Password required to download the new version of
Ground Support Software and associated firmware files.
The link on the Meggitt download site to obtain the GSS and the
new firmware to update the AEIVMU is as follows:
https://mymeggittsupport.com/
• Then click on “Technical Support “tab (Figure 1)
Figure 1
• Next step, login at the bottom of the page to get the files (Figure 2)
An “in service evaluation” (ISE) was conducted for one year.
Feedback from this ISE was used to develop improvements that have
been incorporated into the new algorithm (4L+).
Note that with the new configuration, the process for downloading
and reporting AEIVMU alarms does not change. Following an
AEIVMU alarm, a report 45 will be automatically printed from the
MCDU. Then, a download is required to send the report to CFM for
processing the signal and analyzing the data.
TSM task 77-32-00-810-819-A/820-A download procedure has to
be done before replacing an engine to avoid data reset.
Figure 2
Downloading the AEIVMU software
Meggitt issued Service Bulletin SB 201-73-009 (November 2017) to
introduce the availability of a new set of improved algorithms to be
loaded onto the Advanced Engine Interface and Vibration Monitoring
Units (Advanced EIVMUs) with PN 271-201-011-501 that are
installed on the Airbus A340 aircraft with CFM56-5C engines.
• Use laptop and specific Meggitt cable: PN 984-415-000-011
• Load GSS 3.0.5 software from Meggitt web site (on request) and
install it on laptop
• Upload Algorithms to AEIVMU with GSS 3.0.5, laptop and cable as
described in the Service Bulletin accomplishment instructions

CFM56-All – Hexavalent Chromium on engine parts (19-12-7200-03)
CFM has learned that some engine parts have been observed with a
residue containing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The residue has
primarily been found at shop level but can also be found during line
maintenance. This article provides the status of the investigation
and offers recommendations if a residue is found on engine
hardware.
Recommendations
CFM recommends that maintenance personnel comply with local
regulatory guidelines, including wearing eye/face protection and
disposable gloves/clothing when handling parts to minimize worker
exposure.
Approved penetrant and consumables oils should be applied to
affected areas prior to removing the residue by scraping and/or
wiping.
Figure 1: Photo of an engine component exhibiting a residue that may
contain hexavalent chromium
What is hexavalent chromium: Cr(VI)?
Hexavalent chromium, also referred to as Cr(VI), is a group of
substances that contain the metallic element chromium (Cr) in its
positive 6 valence (hexavalent) state. It is a product used in a variety
of industrial applications, including stainless steel
production/welding, thermal cutting, chrome plating, painting, and
coating processes.
Exposure to high levels of airborne, oral or dermal Cr(VI) compounds
is associated with an increased health hazard, and should be avoided.
Investigation of Cr(VI) findings
CFM is investigating which engine components and product lines are
potentially affected, with the following findings:
• The presence of a residue that may contain Cr(VI) has been
observed on various engine parts across engine programs.
• The residue is not found on every engine part.
• Not every engine part that has been found with a residue has tested
positive for Cr(VI).
CFM has determined that the Cr(VI) residue is a surface phenomenon
only and has no impact on bulk material properties.
The root cause investigation of the formation of Cr(VI) is ongoing.
Initial findings indicate a chemical reaction between some assembly
aids and environmental dust containing MgO, CaO, Ca(OH)2 with
chromium occurs at the surface of metallic parts also containing
chromium (Ni, Co and Fe based alloys) at engine operating
temperatures. Depending on the composition of environmental dust,
formation of Cr(IV) can continue. Industrial Hygiene (IH) and
handling precautions should be followed in order to minimize
airborne exposure to Cr(IV) during engine maintenance.
If potentially contaminated component parts are to be moved or
transported, take precautions to minimize direct contact or release
of the residue during handling and transportation. All such parts
should be placed in plastic bags or securely wrapped in plastic.
Shipping and marking must be in compliance with regulatory
requirements.
Documentation
CFM is creating/revising applicable manuals to include:
• New SPM (Standard Practices Manual) procedure to aid in the
identification and handling of parts with residue potentially
containing Cr(VI).
• The following warning in the Engine Shop Manual front matter
introduction section and other applicable manuals that describes
environmental, health and safety precautions required for moving,
touching, replacing or discarding hardware with possible Cr(VI)
residue.
* Note that revisions to the front matter introduction cannot be
released as an Incremental Change; therefore, the revisions will
be incorporated during the normal engine manual release cycle.

CFM56-All – Minutes of the TechPubs Customer call – Upcoming TechPubs Customer
Forum (19-12-7200-06)
CFM hosts a periodic TechPubs Customer Call that is available to all TechPubs users. The calls offer direct discussion between the CFM technical
documentation team and CFM Tech Pubs users. Summaries of these calls are provided in Fleet Highlites.
In order to provide the best support for myCFM portal users, the
myCFM TechPubs team held the 15 th TechPubs customer call on
December 12, 2019 to present the latest developments and news
regarding CFM Technical Documentation.
CFM56-5B/CFM56-7B revision schedule change
(reminder)
Currently, all CFM56 engine programs except the CFM56-5B and the
CFM56-7B have one global revision per year for technical
publications.
Beginning next year, the revision cycle for the CFM56-5B and the
CFM56-7B engine programs will be reduced from two revisions per
year to one revision per year. Figure 1 shows the CFM56-5B and
CFM56-7B revision schedule for 2020:
Moreover, the ICs packages, which are cumulative, provide the
following benefits:
• Packages are smaller in size than a global revision
• Faster download
• Possibility to select the documents you need
• Same files as for a revision (Raw data: XML, SGML, illustrations,
PDF, etc.…)
Please note that
• For the myTechPub online viewer users: the technical
documentation is always up-to-date (updates included
automatically).
• For the offline viewer users: users need to download the update
packages to be always up-to-date. using the myCFM portal
myDownload widget.
Incremental Changes delivery planning
Figure 1: CFM56-5B and CFM56-7B revision schedule for 2020
The TMI (Technical Manual Index) was updated on November 1, 2019
to reflect these changes. Users are invited to check it as needed:
https://www.cfmaeroengines.com (section “Support” → scroll down
until the section, “Technical Manuals,” then click on”CFM56 Engine
Manuals Index”).
CFM provides updates between two revisions called Incremental
Changes (ICs), when necessary, according to the IC publication
planning below.
• ESM & CMM ICs are published weekly according to the following
schedule (Figure 2):
Please note that extra publications may be published for urgent ICs.
CFM will continue to update the CFM56-5B and CFM56-7B
documentation by Incremental Change, when necessary, between
revisions.
CFM encourages users to subscribe to the myCFMportal Incremental
Changes notifications to remain informed of the latest CFM56-5B and
CFM56-7B Incremental Change releases.
For more details on the myCFM portal notifications, please refer to
the September 2019 Fleet Highlites article “CFM56-All –
myCFMportal notifications news; 2020 TechPubs Customer Forum
survey (19-09-7200-03).”
Figure 2: ESM global IC delivery planning
• EIPC ICs are published according to the following schedule, on the
same day as an ESM update (Figure 3).
Incremental Change (IC): I see, You see, We all use IC!
CFM strongly recommends users to use the ICs in order to
• Be always up to date with the CFM technical documentation, prior to
the next revision
• Get the latest criteria
• Get the latest procedures
• Save time and resources implementing earlier new procedures
• No need to wait for the next revision
