#01 MINIS
Ironically, the next "big" trend is teeny. Summer of 2019
showcased a new trend - minidresses and itty-bitty bags. Tight or
flowy, strapless or broad straps, this trend was the most flaunted
style! From Kylie Jenner to Emily Ratajowski, everyone
everywhere has sported this style, this hot season. Minibags are
also not just something the Kardashians are using, although they
may be the only ones who can fit all their things in there.
#02 PLAIDS & PRINTS
It’s 2019, people have got over their fear of patterns clashing.
People have become BOLDER. Cher from Clueless has
immortalized the yellow plaid blazer-skirt combo. Prints and
plaids were a staple in everyone’s wardrobe throughout the
year. This season, street style stars let their animal instincts
take over with bold and wild prints. In particular, loud
leopard print was a favorite amongst the fashionistas and
appeared on everything. Tie-Dyes, polka dots, and animal
prints are back, bigger than ever.
#03 STATEMENT SNEAKERS
Balenciaga's Triple-S sneakers sent the fashion crowd
spiraling, trying to get their hands on a pair of chunky $895
kicks. Searches for "statement sneakers" were up 2,211%
at the end of 2018, per Pinterest!
#04 CYCLING SHORTS
If you followed the spring 2019 runways closely, you
couldn't escape cycling shorts, which cropped up
everywhere from Maryam Nassir Zadeh to Fendi.
#05 BRING BACK THE 80s
Puffy sleeves and ruffles are not just a trend of the past - the 80s are back! 2019
saw an absolute revival of these trends and they’re here to stay. Proving once and
for all that the minimalist trend is over, this show season saw attendees embrace
lashings of fabric. While this meant bold ruffles and oversized silhouettes, it also
7
resulted in statement puff shoulders on both dresses and blouses. Simultaneously
striking and stylish, these puff sleeves added a fun ‘80s twist to modern outfits.
#06 THE BIGGER THE BETTER
Coats, jackets, sunglasses - EVERYTHING is better
when it’s oversized! Cher from Clueless has
immortalized the yellow plaid blazer-skirt combo. Plaid
jackets have been one of the most popular trends this
year.
#07 LEGGO RODEO
Cowboy boots and Western belts are CHIC. It’s not just
something you wear to Coachella! While western
belts were trending in 2018, they really made a
place for themselves as a fashion staple this past
year.
#08 ACCESSORIZE ALL THE
WAY
2019 has proved that accessories are the way to go.
Headbands, scrunchies, clips, and hats are all IN.
Someone calls the 90s because they’re back and
looking better than before!
#09 PATCHWORK
Spotted on the streets outside fashion shows from
Paris to New York, patchwork appeared on
dresses, jumpsuits, pants and more. As colorful as
it is creative, the look sews together contrasting
pieces of fabric to achieve an eclectic and eyecatching
design.
#10 BOILER SUITS
Utilitarian designs appeared in all the major fashion
cities throughout this fashion year. Of course, one
particular style stood out from the pack. Originally
designed as a one-piece protective garment for
manual labor, boiler suits are now as fashionable as
they are functional.

As we enter this new decade, it is rather important that the major fashion breakthroughs
of the 2010s shall be recapped! During the past decade, the industry was marked by the
rise of social media and influencers who have largely changed the industry, more
inclusivity amongst the actors of fashion, and influences of subcultures and movements
on iconic trends.

STREET-STYLE
Although street-style fashion wasn’t born in the 2010’s, this was the period where it became
ever-present in the fashion world. This is thanks to the emergence of social media where
models and celebrities post candid snaps of them in casual wear.
Streetwear is simply
fashionable casual clothes:
T-shirts, hoodies, sneakers,
track pants, etc. It emerged as
an antidote to the general
fashion trends, arose from
countercultures like skate
and hip-hop. It also opened
the gate to a new
demographic that was
previously “not allowed” to
show an interest in fashion,
men. Brands like Off-White,
Supreme are a direct
illustration that street-wear
fashion has also extended to
the luxury industry.

PLUS-SIZE REVOLUTION
Ashley Graham walking for Tommy Hilfiger
Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty lingerie collection
The 2010s became a turning point for size diversity in fashion. Ashley Graham is today one of
the most recognized plus-sized models and was the first in this category to be featured on the
cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. Ashley, along with many other influential
figures has paved the way to this new era of body positivity where the average audience can
be represented in the fashion world that had long set ideal slender standards, especially for
young women. As a result, fashion brands had and still must adapt to this movement.
And although the industry still has a long way to go, plus-size models
are finally starting to grace well-known magazine covers and walking
the runway. Thanks to brands like Savage X Fenty by Rihanna, we are
slowly shifting away from the unreachable slender body features
especially imposed on young women since the era of the 90s
supermodels.
THE ERA OF INFLUENCERS
Influencers play a major role in fashion marketing – they’re increasingly
influencing
shopping decisions due to strong engagement with their followers. The best example
of a brand that has understood influencer marketing is Fashion Nova. It has surpassed
Dior, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and many others, to become the most trending fashion
brand in 2018.
How did Fashion Nova grow so fast to achieve this top seat in fashion today? To put
it simply, it did so by not doing any traditional marketing: no runway shows,
nontraditional commercial, no press releases and lastly, they put more effort into
improving their online presence rather than opening physical stores. It focused on
14
creating close partnerships with well-known influencers: Kylie Jenner, Cardi B,
Valérie Cossette, Tammy Hembrow, etc.
nontraditional commercial, no press releases and lastly, they put
more effort into improving their online presence rather than
opening physical stores. It focused on creating close partnerships
with well-known influencers: Kylie Jenner, Cardi B, Valérie
Cossette, Tammy Hembrow, etc.
Even traditional luxury brands like Louis Vuitton have adapted to
this trend and turned to younger audiences with new influencer
campaigns. They have collaborated with 17-year-old Emma
Chamberlain on the brand’s YouTube channel and Instagram stories.
CONSCIOUS FASHION
We are now in an era where concerns about sensitive topics are finally being addressed. Fashion
brands had to become more environmentally conscious, bring more inclusivity in the industry, and
stand up for major political rights. Millennials are shaping the fashion industry, they are advocates
of ethical fashion that covers a range of issues such as fair trade, exploitation, animal welfare,
working conditions, and so on. In short, they are very specific about what their values are.
The heightened awareness of our era sparked this “cancel culture”: brands’ missteps will receive
immediate backlash. Prada and Gucci, for example, have found themselves in this business
threatening situation after their respective monkey keychain and balaclava sweater incidents were
associated with blackface.

“I stopped for a second. If you remember everything, I wanted to say, and
if you are really like me, then before you leave tomorrow, or when you’re just
ready to shut the door of the taxi and have already said goodbye to
everyone else and there’s not a thing left to say in this life, then, just this
once, turn to me, even in jest, or as an afterthought, which would have
meant everything to me when we were together, and, as you did back then,
look me in the face, hold my gaze, and call me by your name”

CLASH DE
By Sophie Lefort-Lavauzelle & Ranjana Raghavan
Following its launch in Paris, Cartier set up
a pop-up studio in Singapore to launch and
introduce its new collection, Clash de Cartier. The Clash de Cartier
collection is a fine jewelry line that celebrates the duality of raw yet elegant, and edgy yet feminine.
The French jeweler, Cartier unveiled its most subversive and rebellious line of jewelry by setting up a traveling pop
up studio, which consists of immersive rooms that explore the duality of the jewelry line.
The Clash de Cartier studio arrived in Singapore from 15 November to 17 November. The studio was located at the
STPI’s gallery area and was open to the public until 17 November. Just like its pop up in Paris, the studio in Singapore
had similar features with little touches of Asian culture. This studio urged the public to explore their own clashing
personalities through its immersive rooms. A particularly appreciable space for the book lovers would be the
Bookstore, made entirely with books as opposed as possible, following the same principle of boldness.
Celebrities like South Korean actor, Ji Chang-Wook, Malaysian actress, Nur Fazura, and Singaporean actresses, Rui
En, Rebecca Lim and, Sheila Sim, also visited the studio.
The reception of this event, the very first pop-up store of the brand Cartier in the country, remains a success and is
praised for its audacity.
To put it in a nutshell, Clash of Cartier offered a refreshing and completely free way to discover the notorious luxury
brand new collection through a personalized and creative approach. Result proving the capacity of the 173-year-old
company to remain current and inspiring. And for the ones who may have wanted to dip further into the event, the
ephemeral café served great champagne in the frame of an agreeable traditional French establishment.
