Search engines and more … 

Dear Readers 

As you are probably aware, following different articles in the press, online and those 

who read my article in June 2019, Windows 7 has gone end of life. Support for this 

product has ended and Microsoft will not be adding any more security updates or 

patches. In short, any vulnerability which now comes up will not be fixed. 

What to do? Don‟t panic, but you do need to resolve this. If you are still working with 

Windows 7, you need to upgrade to Windows 10. Although I was always dubious about 

Windows 10 I can safely say it is now my favoured Operating System. 

Moving on from this, I want to touch on Search Engines (SE). Most people know of 

www.google.com but many of you won‟t be aware of alternatives. I like 

Google and I am a Google fan, but a really nice alternative is www.duckduckgo.com It 

has a nice little add on as instead of going to the site, you can use the app to search 

and your privacy is protected. 

Finally, a less known SE is www.ecosia.org This is a fantastic search engine and is a 

really special one. They donate 80% of all profits to planting trees. Is it legit? Yes, 

totally! They are registered as a „for profit‟ organisation, but also shown as certified 

against „no profit‟. It is complex, so maybe do a search and find out? Anyway, they 

boldly state that today for example “All searches made today will reforest Australia.” 

Every little helps! Right?! Looking at their site tonight whilst writing this article, they 

claim to have planted 81,765,093, and counting. One interesting thing is this. If you 

can pull yourself away from the other search engines and use www.ecosia.org you can 

see how many trees you have planted with your search. For me, that would be a couple 

of trees a day. I‟m not bragging, but as 1 tree is planted for every 45 searches, I could 

do that. Maybe try it for yourself? It has a lovely little add on as well, so you can still use 

your normal browser, but with them as your search default.

Forum 21 Energy Advice 

Our team of volunteer energy advisors are 

helping people who find it hard to keep warm in 

winter because of high fuel costs. We can give 

surviving winter grants to eligible people and 

help with the switching process to find cheaper 

energy suppliers and tariffs. 

We run monthly switching sessions in the 

Minehead Town Council room in the Co-op car 

park where we do a computer search and 

explain how the switching process works. 

Information and advice is also available on the 

phone and we do home visits to see what help 

is available through grants and discounts. 

People on low incomes may be entitled to 

subsidized home improvements such as 

insulation, improved heating and renewable 

sources of energy.

Birnbeck Pier, Weston-super-Mare 

On 10th September 2019, North Somerset 

Council working with Historic England, served 

a Repairs Notice to the private owner of 

Birnbeck Pier. The council had exhausted all 

other options to encourage the owner to 

improve the condition of the Pier and the 

Repairs Notice advised that repair work must 

take place. 

A Repairs Notice is a swift and effective tool 

for alerting a proprietor of their statutory 

duties to repair and maintain the property 

they own and the owner has a minimum of 

two months to respond to the notice. Should 

that period expire without a response, the 

council will then agree a future course of 

action with the relevant parties. 

The Listed Buildings Repairs Notice expired 

without any response and the future of this 

historic landmark will be debated by the 

Council in the spring.
