Successful appeal bridges the gap
A bid to raise the £65,000 needed to reinstate a
much-missed footbridge in the stunning East Lyn
Valley near Lynmouth will come to fruition this
spring.
The success of the appeal, led by Lyn Community
Development Trust in partnership with the Exmoor
National Park Authority’s CareMoor scheme, means
that construction of the new bridge using Exmoor
grown oak can now get underway. An anonymous
£15,000 donation towards the end of last year
brought the 2-year campaign to a close, raising
enough money for both the construction and installation of the bridge and additional works to
the footpath will make it as accessible as possible.
The most recent bridge was installed by the Army Royal Engineers, but its soft-wood timber
decayed, and it had to be removed in 2017. The appeal that followed won celebrity backing
from Julia Bradbury and Caroline Quentin and local groups including all-female singing group
the LynTones, Lynton CofE Primary School children whose string of painted walking boots
made local news, the National Trust on whose land the bridge resides, and many, more.
FEBRUARY 2020 11
Search engines and more …
Dear Readers
As you are probably aware, following different articles in the press, online and those who
read my article in June 2019, Windows 7 has gone end of life. Support for this product
has ended and Microsoft will not be adding any more security updates or patches. In
short, any vulnerability which now comes up will not be fixed.
What to do? Don‟t panic, but you do need to resolve this. If you are still working with
Windows 7, you need to upgrade to Windows 10. Although I was always dubious about
Windows 10 I can safely say it is now my favoured Operating System.
Moving on from this, I want to touch on Search Engines (SE). Most people know of
www.google.com but many of you won‟t be aware of alternatives. I like
Google and I am a Google fan, but a really nice alternative is www.duckduckgo.com It
has a nice little add on as instead of going to the site, you can use the app to search and
your privacy is protected.
Finally, a less known SE is www.ecosia.org This is a fantastic search engine and is a
really special one. They donate 80% of all profits to planting trees. Is it legit? Yes, totally!
They are registered as a „for profit‟ organisation, but also shown as certified against „no
profit‟. It is complex, so maybe do a search and find out? Anyway, they boldly state that
today for example “All searches made today will reforest Australia.” Every little helps!
Right?! Looking at their site tonight whilst writing this article, they claim to have planted
81,765,093, and counting. One interesting thing is this. If you can pull yourself away
from the other search engines and use www.ecosia.org you can see how many trees you
have planted with your search. For me, that would be a couple of trees a day. I‟m not
bragging, but as 1 tree is planted for every 45 searches, I could do that. Maybe try it for
yourself? It has a lovely little add on as well, so you can still use your normal browser,
but with them as your search default.
As always, questions and comments are welcome. Please do contact me, Andy, at
Lyn Health Medical and Minor Injury Services News
Health Centre News The latest issue of our Health Centre News is now available to
collect in reception and also available to view on our website.
Antibiotics Antibiotics are used to treat or prevent some types of bacterial infection.
They work by killing bacteria or preventing them from spreading. But they do not work
for everything. Many mild bacterial infections get better on their own without using
antibiotics.
Antibiotics do not work for viral infections such as colds and flu and most coughs and
sore throats. Antibiotics are no longer routinely used to treat: most chest infections, ear
infections in children, sore throats, sinusitis or colds.
When it comes to antibiotics take your doctor's advice on whether you need them or not.
Antibiotic resistance is a big problem and taking antibiotics when you do not need them
can mean they will not work for you in the future. Never take old unused antibiotics or
those prescribed to someone else. Most infections will clear with self-care and ensuring
you have plenty of rest and drink enough fluids. The pharmacist is also able to advise
you on a variety of methods to help.
Below is a list of common infections and how long they usually last:
middle-ear infection – 4 days
sore throat – 7 days
common cold – 10 days
sinusitis – 18 days
cough or bronchitis – 3 weeks.
You only need to see a GP if: your symptoms do not improve after the suggested time
(see above), your symptoms get suddenly worse, your temperature is very high or you
feel hot and shivery, you're concerned about your child's symptoms, you're finding it hard
to breathe or develop chest pain, you have a long-term medical condition – for example,
diabetes, or a heart, lung, kidney or neurological disease, you have a weakened immune
system – for example, because you're having chemotherapy.
Staff Training Closing Information The surgery will be CLOSED between 1pm and 2pm
on Thursday 13th February for Patient Services Meeting. MIU will remain open as
normal.
THANK YOU! All of the staff here at Lyn Health would like to say a BIG THANK YOU for all
the wonderful cards and gifts that were brought in for us at Christmas. All were very
much appreciated.
Naturesave Trust Fund
The Naturesave Trust helps specific environmental and conservation projects
throughout the UK.
It obtains 100% of its funds from the premiums generated by Naturesave Insurance.
Naturesave Trust can provide grants to small and medium-sized environmental projects
which can include renewable energy, nature conservation, sustainable communities,
recycling, science and education.
The Trust also provides start-up ‘seed corn’ grants for community renewable energy
projects: this might be a wind turbine, solar power, biomass boiler or hydro scheme. The
aim is to support communities with the costs of the initial preliminary works required to
start this type of project.
Any organisation, including charities, voluntary organisations and businesses based in
the UK, may apply. A small number of grants are made each year, mostly around £1,000
in value.
The Naturesave Trust has funded environmental and
conservation projects across the UK since 1995.
Applications may be submitted at any time.
FEBRUARY 2020 19
What better way to refresh your diet after a season of over-indulgence than to get more veg into your
meals? We are firm believers that you don’t need meat to make a magical meal. Whether you want to
ramp up the veg in your diet, are giving Veganuary a go, or just want to experiment with new, inspiring
and veg-centric meals, these recipes, and Riverford of course, are for you! Here’s to a veg-packed
2020!
Winter pilaf with walnut pesto and baked portobellos Serves 2
A good pilaf is all about light but fragrant spicing and gently methodical cooking of the rice. As best you
can, the aim is to try and get the grains of rice fluffy and well separated. Placing a tea towel under the
lid helps to absorb condensation in the pan, which in turn helps the grains separate.

200g brown basmati rice
1 onion
1 stick of celery
1 large or 2 small parsnips
2 garlic cloves
Olive oil
200g portobello mushrooms
1 orange
1 bay leaf
2 tsp ras el hanout
100g spring greens
30g parsley
40g walnuts
40g dried cranberries
Salt & pepper
Preheat oven to 200˚/Gas Mark 6. Put a kettle of water on to boil. Rinse the rice under cold
running water in a sieve. Place the rice in the pan with a good pinch of salt, cover with boiling
water, return to the boil and simmer for 6 minutes. Peel and finely slice the onion.
Cut the celery into fine ½ cm dice. Peel the parsnips and chop into fine ½ cm dice. Peel and chop
one of the garlic cloves. Drain the rice well, keep to one side and give the pan a quick clean. Put
the pan back on the heat with 2 tablespoons of oil. Add the onion, celery and parsnips, season
them lightly with salt and pepper. Fry them gently for 10 minutes, until starting to soften.
While the onion cooks, clean the mushrooms with damp kitchen paper or a cloth. Place the
mushrooms in the roasting tin, toss them in some oil and season well. Add a dash of water to the
tray and cover tightly with foil. Pop into the oven for 25 minutes to bake, removing the foil for the
final 10 minutes to let them colour. Pull 3 long strips of zest from the orange with a peeler. Add the
zest to the onion along with the bay leaf and garlic.
Fry for a further 2 minutes before adding the ras el hanout. Cook lightly for 1 more minute. Tip
75ml (5 tablespoons) of water into the pan and add the rice. Gently turn it through the onion, trying
not to compress it too much. Gently level it out and press 8 holes into the rice with the handle of a
wooden spoon. Drape the tea towel over the top of the pan and pop the lid on, fold the edges up
and over the lid so they don’t catch.
Cook on a very low heat for 10 minutes. While the rice cooks, wash the spring greens, strip away
the tough central stalks and finely shred the leaves. Wash the parsley, shake it dry, pick the leaves
off and finely chop them.
Peel the remaining garlic clove and finely chop or crush it. Finely chop the walnuts. Mix the garlic,
parsley and walnuts together and add enough olive oil to give you a pesto consistency. Season with
salt and pepper. Add the spring greens on top of the rice. Replace the lid and cook for 5 minutes,
until the rice is tender and fluffy and the greens wilted.
Coarsely chop the cranberries and add them to the pilaf, stirring them through with the cooked
greens. Check the seasoning and adjust with salt, pepper and a squeeze or two of orange juice to
your taste.
Cut the baked mushrooms into chunky slices and serve them on top of the pilaf. Spoon over the
walnut pesto.
24 FEBRUARY 2020
Love Lyn Valley: Going for Zero
next public meeting
Lyn Climate Action is about how we can take practical steps to improve our lives, and those of generations
to come by protecting and enhancing our environment. We know that we can‟t change the world but we
can change our bit of it. The first community meeting of Lyn Climate Action to which everyone was invited
was on Wednesday 27th November 2019. It was to start planning what we can do. Over 50 people
attended. There was a talk from Myc Riggulsford, a science and environment journalist, and then everyone
joined a table to discuss ideas. Each table produced a sheet of ideas for action. Some people volunteered
to be on a smaller action group to work out how to implement these ideas. This action group is also open
to all. There is much we can do for Lyn Valley and so the theme „Love Lyn Valley‟ emerged with the first
focus being on „Going for Zero‟. We will cover that in a later issue.
Back to Basics: What is „Global Warming‟? When sunlight passes through a medium, such as glass, it
penetrates it but is slowed down so that it is changed to heat in the process. The heat, then, doesn‟t have
enough energy to travel back through the glass and so is trapped inside. This is what makes a garden
greenhouse work. The earth‟s atmosphere acts in the same way. It acts like a fleece and prevents
extremes of temperature. This is normal. Also over hundreds and thousands of years the earth‟s climate
varies considerably and has gone through long periods of cooling or warming. This also is normal. However
with our increased industrialisation, increased air travel and private transport we are burning ever more
fossil fuels and this is creating more carbon dioxide and other particles in our atmosphere. This has
caused the „greenhouse effect‟ which is behind new extremes of world temperatures. At first scientists
were divided as to whether the global warming is just a normal fluctuation (as described) or is actually
caused by these manmade emissions. With so much more evidence available now the overwhelming
majority of scientists have concluded that it is manmade. For example: search: „NASA climate change‟.
Unfortunately not everyone has caught up with this update! As we all know we have very little time to
reduce our carbon and other emissions before they get seriously out of hand.
What we can do: a few ideas to start with We can support our local business and producers. This saves
produce transport (food miles) and so reduces our carbon footprint. We can support those restaurants and
pubs which themselves buy local. We are very lucky to have a local charity shop in Queen Street, Lynton
which supports the North Devon Hospice. We can not only take our unwanted goods there, which helps
with recycling, but also buy from there to save the production costs of new goods. Where there are
facilities, we can refill containers. This also saves the energy costs of production. We can come together to
plant more trees (see below). We can reduce heat loss in our homes and save money (see below). Save
money – save energy. Over half of the average household‟s fuel bills go towards providing heating and hot
water. That is a considerable amount of money, so it is vital that we are knowledgeable about the type of
heating system we have, and we are using it correctly. This will not only save money, but also reduce
carbon being released. Turning your thermostat down 1 degree can save you £80 per year and 340kg of
carbon dioxide. Upgrading an old boiler to a modern one has savings of around £200 per year. Insulating
your home has huge benefits too, both for your pocket and for the climate. A typical older house loses 10%
of heat through the loft, 20% through glass, 30% through drafts, 25% through the walls and 15% through
the floors. Increasing your loft insulation to 300mm, installing draft proofing and secondary or double
glazing can cut heat loss by up to 50%. There are initiatives that support local people with home
improvements such as insulating your home, replacing your boiler and accessing grants for energy efficient
measures. 361 Energy are a local not-for-profit community interest company and focuses on „the
acceleration of decarbonisation of our beautiful region in the face of the climate emergency‟, which in turn
helps to reduce people‟s energy bills. You can call them on 01271 599361 to discuss what they can offer you.
Energy saving facts The average person‟s carbon footprint is 10 tonnes per year which is equivalent to
filling 24 million balloons with carbon dioxide. Average annual carbon footprint per person in (tonnes):
Australia = 20.6 : Lynton (UK!) = 9.7 : China = 4.6 : India = 1.2
What we have done so far: - A Facebook group: „Lyn Climate Action‟ was started with currently over 150
members. There will be a website to follow. There is also a new Instagram page: @ “LynClimateAction”. If
anyone wishes to post a message, it is #LoveLynValley or #lovelynvalley …and to come…… The second
open public meeting at the end of February, everyone is welcome to attend. It will begin with a talk about
how to save energy in our homes. A tree planting day open to all also at the end of February. A logo
Competition. Kidz! listen out for information on how to submit your design from your schools.
Christ Church, Parracombe
For the Plough Sunday service this year, we were
pleased to welcome The Venerable Jackie Searle,
Bishop of Crediton to conduct the service. This was a
group service and it was good to welcome also many
members of other congregations in the Lyn Mission
Community.
Members of Blackmoor Gate Young Farmers brought the plough into the church and
three very young members of the congregation gave some of the readings. After the
service, Bishop Jackie was presented with a thank you bouquet and Reverend Jean
was also presented with a bouquet in recognition of her continued work within the
ministry sometimes in difficult circumstances.
Thank you also to members of Christ Church PCC for
providing refreshments after the service which gave
all an opportunity to mingle and catch up on the
news.
FEBRUARY 2020 37
As evening approached near Glenthorne
A short story in four parts
written by Richard Small, a North Devon author
He parked his car on the desolate earth lay-by just before County Gate and set off on foot in search of adventure.
His mind was taken by a sign that read, ‘Site of ancient Barrow’. It took longer than anticipated but he eventually found
the site and stood on a high point and enjoyed the commanding view of the valleys around, just as they who built it must
have done. His plan was changing all the time but he was enjoying it all so much, the view, the air, the sunshine. . . that
raw connection with nature itself. He decided to walk further afield and downhill towards the beach some one mile
distant. At first his way was barred by thick undergrowth and fences but he eventually found a suitable track. His effort
was rewarded. Glenthorne beach was surreally beautiful and obviously rarely visited. He rested a while, looking at patterns
in the stones and the antics of a friendly Robin. Perhaps he’d stayed too long but it was such a wonderful day and he was
sure he could easily retrace his steps. It was a relentless but steady 3,000 feet climb back to the road where he had
earlier abandoned his car. First he had to climb over a fallen tree and land slip that blocked the path and had nearly kept
him from reaching the beach. It was a climb for a younger man than he but the day was good and there seemed a touch of
misplaced youth in his being.
So far so good, he’d taken a track which he believed would meet up with the one he’d used for the descent. He felt
he’d reached about a third of the way but a quick glance at the lowering sun told him he’d better get on with it, no more
dilly dallying, time for some serious walking. After a few minutes, he stopped to catch his breath and looked back to view
his progress. Horror of horrors, he was on the wrong track, he was climbing on the wrong side of the wooded valley … he
needed to be the other side, on the far hill, damn it all. With misplaced confidence exceeding questionable ability, he
decided to cut across country through the woods, taking a straight line for where he thought he’d find his car. It was to
turn out to be one of life’s more regrettable decisions.
Part 2
….. He stepped off the track and, despite the trauma of finding a meatless, dismembered
sheep carcass on the way, the open deciduous woodland was easy going. As he drove his
body onward, his mind dwelled morbidly on the dead sheep, how it might have met its end,
and old wives tales of big cats out on the moors. The hairs stood up on the back of his neck
and his body gave an involuntary shudder.
The easy going underfoot stopped abruptly at a barbed wire fence, beyond which the climb
was thick with old conifers. He walked along the stout wire fence looking for an easier way
through. With an unusual touch of luck he found a weak point. There were signs that
someone had been through there before, probably with their dog, as a few strands of black
fur were still hooked on the wire. He cursed as the sharp metal barbs hooked on his clothing
and he suffered a small but annoying cut extricating himself.
‘Oh well, not too bad old boy,’ he said trying to console himself and pressing his coat sleeve
on the back of his bleeding hand, ‘it’ll soon stop, you’ll be fine.’ Lowering his head to go under
the dead branches of a large conifer, he walked on, upwards and onwards. A lost man will
never understand what drives him forward into an unknown that defies all logic and he was
no exception to that madness.
There was a darkness about the forest, a darkness in more ways than one. He was not
comfortable with his route, often having to change direction to avoid tangles of dead but
impenetrable lower branches. In the end it was only the hill itself that told him he was going in
vaguely the right direction. Trees and ground became a little lighter up ahead and he hoped
he was at the end but it turned out to be a small clearing. At least it gave him a breather from
walking stooped with head down through the forest. As he crossed the clearing, on the
remnant of a lone standing tree, he noticed what looked like scratch marks, they were wide,
deep and reached nearly as high as he was tall. Thoughts of a big cat immediately
overwhelmed his mind and he looked around, staring into the encroaching forest gloom.
To be continued …..
FEBRUARY 2020 41
News from the Exmoor Pony Centre
Ashwick, Dulverton TA22 9QE
It has been a busy start to 2020 with 13
new foals so far arriving at the Centre all
of which will have to be handled and
health checked to prepare them for future
rehoming. This year they are all named for
famous artists. Little Banksy, in the photo
with Linzi, is much smaller than the other
foals and will need some extra care and
attention to get him up to full weight.
Over the Christmas period we took our stall to various local events to raise some extra
money at this expensive time of year. Sales of our cards and calendars help to pay for
winter hay and feed which is needed by our foals. We held a successful Dog Show at
Cannington and have been collecting at Tesco’s in Ilfracombe, Minehead and Bideford.
You may have visited us at our Pop- up shop in Wellington in January, this is a new
venture for us to help boost our funds.
Many ponies have gone out to new conservation grazing sites around the country and
have all settled in well. Four of last year’s foals (the ones named after cheeses) are
now with Avon Wildlife Trust. We were recently notified of some ponies in Yorkshire that
were destined for slaughter and were able to rescue six of them. Three fillies and a colt
are now at the Exmoor Pony Centre and are being kept in quarantine for a while before
being allowed to mix with others. The two older mares are now on a grazing site in
Northumberland where they can live out their days with other older mares.
