FROM THE PRINCIPAL
BOB ROWE
Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Covington Catholic High School,
The Colonel Class of 2019 – the largest senior class since the 1970s – has graduated. The spiritual
foundation and education they received from Covington Catholic, as well as their membership in the
community of CovCath alumni, will serve them well in the next stage of their journey and beyond. I
congratulate them all, and wish them godspeed.
These graduating seniors and their junior, sophomore and freshman classmates were part of
a signature year at CovCath. Upperclassmen embraced the new House System, which > 80% of
freshmen viewed as a neutral to highly positive means of making new friends within our community.
Eight students attended the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program or Governor’s School for the
Arts. The football team returned to the state title game, and the basketball team repeated as the 9th
Region champs, with a strong (and very exciting!) showing in the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen Tournament.
Forty-four students were awarded a varsity letter for community service. The Real Steele robotics
team – comprised of freshmen and sophomores – earned a berth in the Robotics World Championship
in late April. Senior Logan Smith won the KHSAA boys state championship in diving. And we
exceeded our fundraising goal for the Colonel Cash Madness Raffle.
Our Dean of Academics and Assistant Principal Tony Zechella was selected as the Kentucky ACT
College and Career Readiness K-12 Champion. Under his guidance, CovCath’s ACT composite score
average for its graduating classes has been approximately 30% above the state and 25% above the
national composite averages.
In May, we honored (recently retired) Kroger Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Mike Schlotman (’75) as our 2019 Northern Kentuckian of the Year. Also during the NKYL luncheon,
Senior Harrison Farrar shared how the work study program was the cornerstone to his growth and
success at CovCath. Harrison (the 2019 Principal’s Award recipient), Adam Fortner (Salutatorian), and
Evan Moon (Valedictorian) all gave exemplary addresses at the end of the year which exhibited the
leadership and character of the Class of 2019.
So importantly and very thankfully, CovCath is regrounded after the events surrounding the
January March for Life in Washington, DC. We were impressed by and proud of the resilience
and strength our young men showed during this remarkably difficult time. Our school has made
many changes – in the broad view of the realities of electronic media, to the proactive and practical
hiring of a school resource officer – as a result of this event. My deepest appreciation goes out to
the extended CovCath community of parents, alumni and friends for their unwavering support.
#WithASpiritThatWillNotDie, indeed.
Completion of the final school construction projects will lead us to the August 25th dedication of the
Anthony R. Zembrodt STEM and Fine Arts Center and the Drees Student and Alumni Center; we
hope you will join us.
Please be assured of my prayers.
God’s blessings,
Robert J. Rowe

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,

COLONEL COMMITMENT:
Work Study and Scholarship
The conclusion of a school year
is celebrated with reflection on
the accomplishments of students
– in their spiritual journey, in the
classroom, on the field of competition,
and as members of the community.
For one in five Covington Catholic
students, it also reflects reward from
the effort they put in to help fund their
CovCath education.
At CovCath, we work to keep
tuition at a level which provides an
unparalleled value. We also work very
hard to provide options to those for
whom the tuition would otherwise be
out of reach. These options include
tuition assistance, work study and
scholarships.
For the 2018-2019 school year,
qualifying Covington Catholic
families received more than $460,000
in tuition assistance. The money
awarded for the Tuition Assistance
Program is exclusively funded via the
Annual Appeal, the CCH Endowment
Fund, Corporate Sponsorships, and
the Northern Kentuckian of the Year
Luncheon sponsored by Covington
Catholic.
Students who receive tuition
assistance are required to work at
school for a designated number of
hours based upon the amount of
assistance received. These tasks range
from general janitorial duties and
landscape cleanup, to setting up the
gymnasium for the Boosters’ weekly
Bingo fundraiser. The work study
program administrator works with
students to arrange the hours around
their academic and extracurricular
commitments. Grant Hemmer (Class
of 2019), a four-year member of the
football team, member of National
Honor Society and more, said, “The
time I spent in work study has taught
me a few key lessons…not only how
to clean a desk or sweep a hallway;
rather, how to work for what may
be taken for granted. I am blessed
every day for that opportunity. Those
hours have taught me gratitude and
humility in all my actions, which will
help me in the real world.”
Scholarships are available as well. In
2019-20, over $115,000 in scholarships
will be awarded to students attending
CovCath. For students in the work
study program, scholarships reduce
the hours that they are obligated
to work. Every year, the generous
donors who fund these scholarships
are invited to attend a breakfast with
the student(s) who are supported by
their gift. The students’ gratitude is
consistently expressed, not in terms of
work study hours which are “avoided,”
but rather as a true gift which enabled
each student to pursue other goals –
spiritual, academic, physical or social
– which may have been otherwise
unattainable.
For more information on the Tuition
Assistance / Work Study Programs
and Scholarships, visit www.covcath.
org/assistance.
These students work hard even after the school
year concludes, putting in hours for summer building
maintenance.

Service for the 2017-18 school
year. This award is given to
any student who completes
40 hours of community
service for at least 6 different
organizations in one school
year. These students are to be
commended for their dedication to giving back to their
communities and the less fortunate. Twelve seniors
also received letters for the 2018-19 year.
The academic team won 1st place in District competition
and 7th place in Quick Recall at Regionals. Students
receiving subject level awards included: Elijah Deters,
Lucien Deters, Jacob F., Harrison Farrar, Trenton
Martin, and Jim Scola.
Evan Moon (Class of 2019) was accepted into the
University of Louisville GEMS program. (Guaranteed
Entrance to Med School.) Only 10 students in the state
were chosen.
Tuck Everlasting and Twelve
Angry Men were this spring’s very
successful drama productions.
Mr. Haders, Covington Catholic Art Teacher, and
his student, Kevin Finke (Class of 2019), recently
presented this wonderful work of art to Mr. Bill
Snyder for his retirement gift. Mr. Snyder served in
the US Navy from 1966-1970 and served on the USS
Dace SSN607 in 1968. He boarded her in Holly Loch
Scotland and was absolutely “scared to death” for a
brief tour of the North Sea and Artic Sea. He does
take credit for keeping all Russian Submarines out of
Northern Kentucky. Mr. Snyder retired from teaching
in 2018 after 17 years at Covington Catholic.

SCHOOL NEWS
The website home page for St. Augustine Parish proclaims:
“For nearly 150 years, Saint Augustine Parish has served the
Peaselburg Community of Covington, KY. Our storied past
inspires us for future service to God’s people.”
ST. AUGUSTINE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
The Very Reverend Daniel Schomaker (CCH 1998), now serves
as the twelfth pastor of Saint Augustine. The current church,
dedicated in 1914, is stunning, but “tired.” It is Father Dan’s hope
that refreshes, repairs and enhancements will elevate the beauty
of the St. Augustine church as a beacon to parishioners and the
overall community.
For this evangelical purpose, a $1.5 Million capital campaign
is underway. The scope of the renovations and enhancements
includes:
• HVAC – Upgrade heating and install air conditioning;
• Pipe Organ & Electric Organ – Restore the pipe organ (installed
in 1927; non-operative for three decades); repair electric organ;
• Bells - Restore St. Augustine’s three bells (1000-, 550- and 250
pounds; originally cast in 1914) to original (and yet improved)
working order;
• Statues, Murals and Stations of the Cross restorations - Clean,
repair and restore nine statues, six murals depicting scripture
and Sacred Traditions, and the 14 Stations of the Cross
(installed in 1914);
• Painting and Plaster – Clean and restore;
• Doors, floors and pews – Repair wood and locking mechanisms
in doors; Refurbish pews (over 100 years old), restore original
wood flooring;
• Lights – Enhance and improve energy-efficiency of interior and
exterior lighting.
The recent tragic fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris
illustrated how churches such as these are both magnificent
historical architectural treasures but also beloved symbols and
vessels of the community of the church.
With over $911K raised (60.77% of the goal) as of January 2019,
Saint Augustine is on track to have a renewed structure by
its 150th anniversary in 2020. For more information on the
campaign, call (859) 431-3943 or visit https://www.staugustines.

WINTER SPORTS RECAPS
Bass Fishing
The bass fishing team finished up
their second season with a team
of 12 CCH fishermen. Overall the
team did very well and caught a lot
of Largemouth, Smallmouth, and
spotted bass on Lake Cumberland.
The team also got to experience the
KHSAA State tournament for the
first time on Kentucky Lake.
In the Regional tournament on
Lake Cumberland the top CovCath
team of RJ Mize and Matt Thiessen
finished in 26th place out of 198
boats with a total weight of 11
pounds 8 ounces. The team’s
boat captain was Bill Smith. This
qualified the team for the KHSAA
State tournament on Kentucky Lake.
At the two day state tournament, the
team caught a total of 14 pounds 7
ounces, placing the team of Coach
Schneeman, Captain Smith, RJ
Mize, and Matt Thiessen in 62nd
place overall.
This was a great season and we are
looking forward to another exciting
season on the water next spring!
Swimming/Diving
The Aqua-Colonels started the
season strong by winning the Simon
Kenton sprint meet on December
1st. The Colonels then lost two
dual meets to national powerhouses
Louisville St. X and Sycamore, OH.
The swimmers and divers finished
the season strong with Conference
runner up and Regional runner up
in Northern Kentucky. The Colonels
placed 5th at State meet which was
one position better than last season.
The highlight of the season was
Senior Logan Smith winning the
state title in Diving. The Colonels
were led by three Seniors who will all
go on to compete at the next level:
Logan Smith (UL), Ethan Hanna
(UC), and Patrick Merse (USNA).
The colonels will return a
large number of Freshmen and
Sophomores next season which
should improve our position in the
region and state.
Wrestling
Covington Catholic Wrestling is
still trending up as they finished
their sixth season. Three wrestlers
qualified for the state tournament,
Mannie Murrer, Warren Naberhaus,
and Michael Manning with each
winning matches. Junior Michael
Manning was the first ever conference
champion. In addition, Senior Mannie
Murrer is the first Colonel wrestler
to be crowned regional champion as
well as earn over 100 career victories.
Returning wrestlers have not wasted
anytime preparing for next season
as they have already been working
exemplifying great leadership and
work ethic.
Bowling
The 2018-2019 Bowling season fell
a little short of its goal of winning
a regional title as the team finished
in 3rd place. Four bowlers received
honors as NKY All-Stars. Junior
Jared Gallagher was a second
team selection and Charlie Smith,
Ian Ward, and Will Clark, all
underclassman, were Honorable
Mention.
There is a lot of promise heading
into next season as the team returns
five of its top bowlers on their quest
to regain the regional title.
Archery
The archery team completed its
fourth year of competition. The
team did very well with several top
10 finishes throughout the season.
Daniel Bloemer was awarded the
NKAC Top Archer award. Luke
and Michael Hentz became the 1st
four-year lettermen in Archery as
they competed on the team from the
beginning.

Basketball
The CovCath Basketball team won
its fourth 9th Region Championship
in just 8 years and finished with a
record of 27-8. The team was the
runner-up in the Gulfshore Holiday
Hoopfest in Naples Florida. Senior
co-captains Nick Thelen, Tyler
Fleek and Jack Davin led the
Colonels back to Rupp Arena after
losing 7 seniors from the 2018 State
Track & Field
Championship team. The freshman
Colonels finished with a record of
24-3 and the JV Colonels finished
with a record of 16-5.
The Colonels’ leading scorers this
year were Grant Disken (13.9), Nick
Thelen (13.5) and Michael Mayer
(10.7). Grant Disken was the Dan
Tieman Classic MVP, All 9th Region
Tournament and NKBBCA All-
Conference first team. Nick Thelen
was All 35th District, 9th Region
MVP, NKBBCA All-Conference first
team and Courier Journal 2nd Team
All State. Michael Mayer was named
to the All 35th District tournament
team as well as the 9th Region
Tournament team.
See photos from the Sweet 16
Tournament on page 16.
Tennis
The tennis Colonels finished in
thrid place at state with three
All-State recognitions: Cristiano
Trojani, Luke McHale and Benito
Trojani.
Baseball
The 2019 baseball team was the
youngest in recent memory at
Covington Catholic. With only
two seniors in the everyday
starting lineup, the Colonels
relied heavily on sophomores and
juniors to step up for the team.
While the offense struggled to
score runs at times, the Colonels’
dominant pitching staff led by
senior Evan Stallman, and juniors
Christopher Fitz and Jack
Raisbeck made sure they gave
their team a chance to win on a
daily basis, eventually leading
Coach Krumpelbeck and the
Colonels to a 21-15 regular season
record and their 33rd consecutive
20-win season.
Lacrosse
The Lacrosse team finished the
2019 season with a record of 4-11,
however they dominated their
district winning 3 out of the four
games to earn a 1 seed in the
Playoffs. Unfortunately, they fell
in the quarterfinals in overtime
to Tates Creek. The Colonels will
be losing a large group of seniors,
but return a strong group of
underclassman with varsity playing
experience. This year’s All-Star
selections include senior Evan
Hanna, Senior Logan Brake, and
Freshman Luke Stetter.

ADVANCEMENT
FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT
TARA LEEN
Dear Colonel Community,
It has been a blessing to witness the growth that has occurred this school year at
Covington Catholic High School. The campus itself has expanded with the addition of the
Dr. Anthony R. Zembrodt STEM and Fine Arts Center as well as the Drees Student and
Alumni Center. The new House System is allowing students to develop social relationships
across all grade levels. Our athletic teams, robotics teams and mock trial team continue to
elevate their level of competition. The support of our alumni continues to grow with the
newly formed Alumni Association Board and we added two new scholarships, increasing
our endowment. Most importantly, we grew stronger in our faith in the face of adversity
and reinforced our foundation with the support of the community and beyond.
I want to thank all of you who contributed to Covington Catholic this year: alumni,
donors, parents, volunteers and sponsors not only through your time, talent and treasure
but through your prayers and words of comfort. It is because of you we can advance the
school’s mission and continue the learning and growing necessary to prepare our young
men for bright futures.
We look forward to beginning the next school year with the opening of the Student and
Alumni Center and the dedication of the new spaces. We hope that you have a fun, safe
summer and thank you again for all that you do to support the Colonels!
With gratitude,
Tara Leen

THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING TO THE ANNUAL APPEAL
There are many ways to support Covington Catholic High School. However, the Annual Appeal is the lifeline to
carrying out the school’s mission. Gifts to the appeal allow the school to keep tuition as low as possible by covering
the gap between tuition and the true operational costs of educating students. It also gives students with financial
need the opportunity to attend CCH. No matter how you choose to show your support, we ask that you additionally
consider a gift each year to the Annual Appeal. All gifts to the appeal are important and directly benefit the entire
student body.
Consecutive donors who give for five years or more to the Annual Appeal are invited to attend a special all-school
Mass and have lunch at Covington Catholic on the week of Thanksgiving as an effort to show our appreciation for
your commitment and dedication to or mission. For questions please contact the Advancement Office at 859-448-
2247 or Tara Leen at tleen@covcath.org.

JACK KAELIN (1941-2019)
Mr. Jack Kaelin, one of Cov Cath’s
most beloved teachers and coaches,
died March 30th at age 75. Jack
Kaelin devoted over 50 years to
Covington Catholic before retiring
in 2013.
James Weber wrote in the Cincinnati Enquirer
(April 1, 2019):
Covington Catholic is mourning the loss of one of its
most legendary figures. From a profile of Mr. Kaelin
upon his retirement: “He has been an educator, coach,
athletic director, alumni director, mentor and friend,”
said CovCath principal Bob Rowe. “Many people have
been positively influenced by him throughout the
years. The greatest compliment that I can give Mr.
Kaelin is that everyone in our community is a better
person because of knowing him.”
Mr. Kaelin said at that time: “It [choosing CovCath]
might have been the greatest decision I ever made in my
life. I was welcomed into Covington Catholic as part of a
big family. No one really realizes how much of a family
CCH is until you get involved in the school.”
Mr. Kaelin taught German, business law, typing,
accounting, business math, personal finance, and
economics. Coach Mote Hils asked him to keep the
basketball scorebook during his first year at CovCath,
a job that he faithfully and enthusiastically executed
until beyond his retirement as a teacher. He was the
scorekeeper for CovCath’s loss in the state final in 1967,
and the Colonels’ first state championship win in 2014.
He served as cross country coach from 1965-2001
and track coach from 1966-1982 before becoming a
track official from 1982-2007. His cross country teams
won 14 regional titles, two state titles and were state
runner-up five times. His track teams won five regional
championships. He also started a club bowling team in
2004 and coached until two years after the sport was
sanctioned as a varsity sport by the Kentucky High
School Athletic Association.
From a memorial story written by Carol Luken:
“It has been said that people die twice – once when
you take your last
breath and once
when someone
says your name
for the last time.
Taking this into
consideration,
the spirit of Jack
Kaelin, a man so
deeply loved and
admired, will long
endure. His legacy
will live on in the
hearts of those
fortunate enough
to have known him
during his earthly
journey.”

ALUMNI
FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI RELATIONS
ALEX AMMERMAN ’10
On May 21st we welcomed 155 Colonels to the brotherhood that is the Alumni of Covington
Catholic High School and witnessed the 95th graduation ceremony at CCH. These new
graduates will join the 8,806 Alumni to have received their diploma from Covington
Catholic High School.
As our Alumni base continues to grow, so does our current school. This was the largest
graduating class from CCH since 1973 and another amazing group of young men who
enter the next phase of their lives proud to be Colonels. While this school year put us
through some of the highest highs and the lowest lows of our storied past, I am confident
that we have grown stronger. Our graduates will continue the CovCath legacy as
outstanding members of our community, as well as caring sons, husbands, fathers and
friends. Ultimately, we will continue to educate young men in accordance with our mission
statement.
With A Spirit That Will Not Die!

A NOTE FROM THE ALUMNI BOARD CHAIR
The Alumni Department at CCH is proud
to introduce a new group to the Covington
Catholic Alumni community. This year an
Alumni Association Board was introduced
thanks to a few dedicated Alumni who came
up with the idea and presented it to the
school. The Board and it’s members will serve
as an extension of the Alumni Department
at CCH and will communicate and engage
with the Alumni in new ways. The Board is
compromised of CCH Alumni from different
classes spanning from the Class of 1979 to
2010 and will be led by it’s first President, Tyler
Holocher (‘09). We are all excited to see how it
will help CCH and the entire Alumni base.

ALUMNI
FROM THE ALUMNI BOARD PRESIDENT
T. TYLER HOLOCHER ’09
CCH Alumni, Family and Friends,
This past year, 21 alumni and faculty have launched the
Covington Catholic Alumni Association. As our first fiscal
year approaches (July 1), I’d like to share the vision and goals
of the board.
The association was formed to provide opportunities for
alumni to stay involved and facilitate engagement in both
the school and community. After all, we’re all connected
by the experiences of going to CCH and growing up in
Northern Kentucky / Greater Cincinnati. We value the sense
of tradition and pride that our alumni share. Our hope is to
streamline communication between the school and alumni,
plan major events, and provide support to students currently
studying at CCH. We’ll encourage alumni engagement
through our class captains, retreats, activities and events.
In order to accomplish our goals, we’ve created five
committees.
Major Events (led by Jason Tate ‘01 & Ben Berger ‘97) – The
committee will help plan and improve upon the Colonel Stag
and will also help with the Alumni Golf Outing, Basketball
Tournament and Northern Kentuckian of the Year Luncheon.
Scholarship (led by Brian McDermott ‘00) – The committee
is responsible for awarding scholarships to outstanding
students at CCH. The majority of what the Alumni
Association raises will go toward the scholarship fund.
Spiritual (led by Jordan Hoffer ‘11) – The committee will
organize an annual retreat and create a platform in which
alumni can share their community service projects with
students and the CCH community.
Class Captains (led by Shane Wiggins ‘06 & Steve Kolkmeier
‘79) – The committee is tasked with delegating class captains
and keeping an up-to-date directory of all alumni.
Marketing (led by Alex Ammerman ‘10) – The committee
helps to design the content for website, newsletters,
and e-mails for Class Captains to share with their fellow
classmates.
**Please note, each committee is open to all alumni. Please
reach out to myself or Alex Ammerman if you have an
interest.**
The board is excited about the initial momentum that has
been generated and the participation from alumni. As we
continue to build the association from the ground up, please
let us know if you have ideas or suggestions.
T. Tyler Holocher
ALUMNI CLASS CAPTAINS
The newly formed Alumni Association Board has come
up with quite a few ways to engage with the Alumni
of Covington Catholic, most notably, will be the usage
of Class Captains. With the help of the Class Captain
Committee, each graduating class from CCH will have
a representative that will serve as their Class Captain.
These Colonels will provide another point of contact
between the Alumni Director, the Alumni Association,
and each Alumni. We are extremely excited to have
the help of these great Colonels listed below. If you
do not see your graduation year listed, we are still
looking to add someone to be a class Captain. Please
contact Alumni Relations Director Alex Ammerman,
aammerman@covcath.org, if interested.
