of the first Bands for Bricks

second event later this month at

A festive affair
The Ambassadors Club recently hosted their annual
Christmas function, themed a White Christmas Affair,
at the prestigious Pretoria Country Club in Waterkloof.
Hosted by the beautiful chairwoman, Ina Wilken, ladies
of all ages came together to celebrate the end of
another successful year. The Ambassadors Club is a timehonoured
group of ladies who come together once a
month as they journey together through life, networking,
supporting one another and aiding the community
around them through social activism.
Local musical maestro, Johan Liebenberg, performed
a range of songs from his Neil Diamond tribute show,
adding a special touch to this tasteful morning.

Wine and dine

delectable Food and Wine Master Class that was both exceptionally

Describing Megan Horak-
Du Preez is no easy feat.
She’s beautiful, dynamic,
and has a passion for
helping others. We caught
up with the brand new
Mrs. Pretoria-Tshwane
2020 to find out about
her plans for the new
year, how she juggles
it all and her reign
as the capital’s
most beautiful and
inspirational.

Her smile can light up any
room, and don’t even
get us started gushing
about her beautiful eyes.
But don’t for one second think the
Moreletapark resident, who has
called the capital home for the past
17 years, is just your average beauty
queen. Oh no. Megan completed her
higher diploma in Entrepreneurship
from the North-West university
while still in high school and then
after Matric her B-Tech (IT Network
Programming) in Pretoria before
moving to the UK in 2003 where she
worked as a Java Programmer and
freelance model.
These days she is the CEO, founder
and owner of Play it 4WARD, a
company specialising in hosting high
profile corporate golf days, charity
golf days and VIP golf experiences;
CEO of Golfing for Teddy, an NPO
that collects and donates teddy bears
to kids who have to spend Christmas
in hospital; marketing director of EV
Global, the biggest independent
electrical vehicle company in South
Africa. Added to that, Megan is
also the ambassador for Serengeti
Estates golf course, LCN Aesthetic
and Slimming Clinic and Swagg Golf
Apparel. Quite a mouthful, we know.
Play it 4WARD celebrated their ten
year anniversary and according
to Megan, the best is yet to
come. Oh, and then there’s the
agency for celebrity golfers,
Master of Ceremonies, speakers
and auctioneers. “When I started
organising golf days I saw a gap in
the industry for golf celebrity MCs
and auctioneers. So I scouted for
the best in the industry that knows
the sport and can connect to any
audience from any background. My
celebrity golf auctioneers raise in
excess of R1.5 million per annum for
charities,” Megan says.
She is also the newly crowned Mrs.
Pretoria-Tshwane 2020 and of course
we had to know why she entered.
“The fact that this pageant is not
based on looks. It’s about your core
belief and your involvement with
your community. You have to show
your worth and earn this title,”
Megan says.
Her role and responsibilities will be
to help raise much needed funds
for the Rolemodels Foundation
which will enable them to buy nonperishable
foods for the orphanage
they support in Pretoria and also
help raise funds for a piece of land
they want to develop and turn into
a holiday and leadership camp for
orphans in school holidays.
So how does she do it all?
“A company is just as good as its
people. So I make sure I employ the
right people for the right positions.
I also make sure they get the right
training and personally make sure
every staff member knows their role
in the company and the importance
of them being able to do their part
so that everyone can work together
as one,” Megan adds.
Did we mention that Megan is
married to golfing legend Heinrich
du Preez? He is a multiple Guinness
World Record holder in golf, with 44
records against his name.
She is also a mom? She’s mom to
her husband Heinrich’s 17-yearold
son Hanno, from his previous
marriage, and has three Yorkie
babies Beer, Angel and Max. She also
recently adopted the family’s newest
addition, Scrappy, from the Wetnose
animal rescue.
When this businesswoman isn’t
running around running the world,
she loves to spend time with family,
friends, and of course, her dogs. She
also loves to travel and works as the
travel and business editor for a local
magazine – yes, she has more jobs
than we can keep track off.
During the month of February
we celebrate Valentine’s Day and
Megan and Heinrich will be having
a special Valentine’s dinner. She will
be speaking at a ladies high tea
about women empowerment and
visit an underprivileged primary
school to speak to parents about
career choices, but says they always
make time for each other. “We
typically spend two nights away for
Valentine’s Day but will definitely go
out for dinner. We love celebrating
Valentine’s Day,” she says.
Bubbly Megan and hubby Heinrich
met through a mutual friend that
wanted her to book him to MC her
golf days. “We went on a coffee date
at O’Galito in Woodlands Boulevard
on 1 November 2010 and the rest, as
they say, is history,” Megan gushes.
The couple have been together for
ten years, and married for six years
this May.
“Love to me is finding someone
that loves all your imperfections
unconditionally. It’s about finding
someone that knows all your faults
and flaws and loves you for them.
Someone that works on your
marriage every day, supports you
and loves you through the good
and the bad. Love means accepting
another person in the strongest way
possible. It means supporting them
in anything and everything, even
when you may not agree on the
situation. Love means not looking for
something better or seeing what’s
out there. It means committing to
that person because you know they
complete you in every way. It doesn’t
mean being a replica of another
person, but rather being like a puzzle
piece that fits perfectly with the
other. Your traits complement each
other to create better versions of you
both,” Megan gushes.
Heinrich has a big influence on
Megan’s personal and professional
career, says the blonde beauty,
Heinrich has taught her almost
everything she knows about
business. “He taught me to never
quit anything you start,” she adds.
“We both started companies
from the ground up and once
you’ve been in a position where
you had nothing before becoming
successful together, you never
take anything for granted. We
both also have compassion for
people who struggle but want to
work to better themselves and their
situation,” she says.
The year might only be two months
in, but Megan hit the ground
running. She is in the process of
opening businesses in Ireland,
Windhoek and UK and has a few
amazing high profile golf days and
events planned this year in South
Africa and Swaziland. “I also have my
own Guinness world record attempt
planned for the end of this year. I
already received confirmation from
Guinness Book of Records, so I’ll keep
you posted,” Megan laughs.

#WEIGHTGOALS
MD Greyling has a successful career as a musician and radio host, is a dad, husband and
now he’s lost about 15kg in an amazing 10 week weight loss transformation.
We simply had to find out how and why he did it.
C
enturion resident MD Greyling
has called the capital city home
all his life. You might recognise
him as member of the music
group Ses Snare and radio host on the
capital’s own Pretoria FM.
He credits his love of music to his
grandmother and father. “Music has
always been in my blood. And with
a talented musician grandmother
and father there were always musical
instruments in our house. I used to
spend hours playing my dad’s guitar
and my grandma’s piano. My parents
were very supportive when it came
to my music and offered me the
opportunity to pursue it as a career
option,” MD says.
As a musician MD became good
friends with most other Afrikaans
musicians in the country and when
Marthys Roets, one of the founding
members of the group Ses Snare,
indicated that he might not be able
to be part of the group on a regular
basis because of other commitments,
MD joined.
“Ses Snare is a project many musicians
only dream about. If I have to sum it
up I would say it’s always being on
your toes, lots of guitars, witty musical
arrangements and heaps of talent,”
MD says.
One of his biggest dreams was to work
in radio one day. “The fact that radio
still plays such an enormous role in
millions of people’s lives today, tells the
tale of people’s search for information
and company,” he adds.
He initially, from his home studio,
made jingles for the then Radio
Pretoria but when the time came
for him to be a bit more involved he
jumped at the chance. His midday
radio show on Pretoria FM, is hosted on
weekdays between 2pm and 5pm and
MD explains it as a journal programme

with topics ranging from hobbies to
celebrities. And of course, with loads of
amazing music in between.
After school, MD studied music at the
University of Technology in Pretoria
but dropped out. He is currently busy
studying towards his BCom degree
and hopes to over the next few years
complete his MBA.
“I have an interest in business and have
always been an entrepreneur. Plus, it’s
highly stimulating for me to retire to
the study at night when the kids go to
bed and the house is quiet,” he says.
Through his career there’s been many
ups and downs, but one thing that’s
been plaguing MD lately, was his
weight. “I exercised but struggled to
get rid of about 20kg. I was pretty
hopeless and didn’t think there was a
way for me to ever lose it. The less I ate,
the more weight I seemed to pick up.
Nothing worked, ” MD says.
One day, after numerously hearing
their adverts and success stories
on Pretoria FM, MD decided to give
Slender Wonder a go.
“Initially the diet looked very
complicated, but after the first week
I noticed that it’s easier than I initially
thought and I had more energy than
usual, even with the smaller portions,”
he says.
“Through the years we made our
bodies used to functioning on big
meals. A big breakfast, lunch and
dinner because it apparently gives
you loads of energy during the day.
Our bodies don’t need all that food.
It only makes you more tired and
your energy levels is not where it’s
supposed to be. Smaller portions with
better nutritive value are definitely the
way to go,” MD says.
Just before he started with his new
diet, MD took a group of tourists to
Israel. “I definitely had to bite my teeth
and for 10 long days say no thank you
to delicious hotel food. Luckily, I could
see results almost immediately and the
hotel at least served lots of vegetables
and salads,” he laughs.
Apart from the diet, MD has
undergone a lifestyle change and
exercises up to six times per week.
He loves CrossFit, cycling as well
as jogging.
His life currently exists around time
management. “If I don’t plan my day
and stick to it, I get very nervous and
worry that I won’t be able to get to
everything. When I do something, I
go for it wholeheartedly for the time
being without worrying about the
next task,” he says.
MD is husband to Denise and dad to
two boys Divan (4) and Lenro (3). The
singer credits his family as a big part
of his big lifestyle change. “I made the
lifestyle change to spend more quality
time with my family. I want to be able
to one day run after a ball and play
rugby with my boys. Currently I am
their jungle gym at home and as a dad
I don’t really have a choice but to stay
healthy and fit,” he says.
MD and Denise have been married
for seven years and he says they try
to teach their kids to give as much of
yourself as you can without wanting
something in return. “Love for me
means to give. It is a lot nicer to give in
life and therefore love, to me, isn’t just
for your wife or kids, but for everyone
you interact with in life. Colleagues,
car guards, family and even our fourlegged
pet friends,”MD says.
MD is tight-lipped about his Valentine’s
Day plans but shares a special message
with his wife and kids. “You make me
the happiest man and dad in the
world. Everything I do, I do for you,
with love.”

While shopping, words like ‘organic’, ‘certified organic’
and ‘natural’ often catches ones’ eye. But ever wondered
what it means? We asked local organic company,
TIMOLA to help explain.
Living organic means choosing
to live a healthy lifestyle
by actively thinking about and
selecting products produced by
organic agricultural and production
processes.
But what does organic agriculture
and production mean?
We’ve all seen the organic sign on
products but how exactly does it
come to be?
Well, getting organic certification is
a lengthy and costly exercise, but, if
done correctly of great benefit to the
end consumer and company as well.
As far as the agricultural and
production process goes, the land
used for cultivation needs to be
without any form of conventional
pesticide or fertiliser for at least
three years. This, of course, has to be
proven. The agriculture processes
used must be of an organic nature
and should the final product in its
entirety require organic certification,
the packaging process must
take place in a facility that is also
organically certified.
What is the most common
misconception about organic
health products?
The non-application of pesticides
or fertilisers to a product does
unfortunately not make it ‘organic’.
There are for example organic
pesticides available. For organic
certification there is an entire process
and value chain that needs to be
completed and maintained for an
ingredient or product to claim the
term ‘organic’.

How can one check if a product
really is organic?
Look for the certifying house’s logo
on the packaging if the packaging
claims “certified organic”. If the
packaging only claims “organic” or
“contains organic ingredients” ask
for the producer’s organic
certification certificate which
indicates the products/ingredients
that are certified organic.
What is the difference between
‘Certified Organic’ and ‘100%
Organic’?
“Certified Organic”, means the
entire process from cultivation to
final packaging is certified organic
and comply to set standards of the
certifying house.
“Organic” or “100% Organic” or any
other form, i.e., “Contains organic
ingredients”, means that a specific
ingredient in the product is certified
organic, but not the entire product.
There might be an ingredient in
the product that is not organically
certified and as such the product
may not be advertised as “certified
organic” in its entirety. The product
may however advertise that it does
contain organic ingredients, which is
still excellent.

makes organic farming different
from everyday farming?
The main difference to organic
farming is that one has to think
and plan each process as it may
have an impact on the organic
re-certification process, which
is a bi-annual process. There is
thus thorough planning and daily

preparation, harvesting, packaging
and transportation.
Everything forms part of the
“organic value chain”. One misstep
might negatively influence the
recertification and as such every
detail is accounted for.

in everyone; this mindset is an
ethos of not just thinking about

Delicious recipes
to treat your love with
We’ll confess we love all the sweet treats that comes with celebrating Valentine’s Day,
but why not skip the chocolates this year and rather try your hand at one of these uber
yummy sweet recipes? Your love (and the kids) will love you for it.
Dark chocolate ice
cream with cardamom
and pomegranate
Serves: 4
You’ll need:
2 egg yolks; 50 g white sugar;
500 ml cream; seeds of 4
cardamom pods (crushed); 160 g
dark chocolate (chopped finely);
40 g cacao powder; 10 ml (2 tsp)
coffee powder (good quality)
mixed with a bit of water;
fresh pomegranate pits and or
lemon slices; freshly grounded
black pepper
To make:
Whisk egg yolks and sugar
with an electric blender until
pale yellow. Add cream and
fine cardamom and whisk well.
Add dark chocolate pieces,
cacao powder and coffee to the
mixture and mix. Pour mixture
into a pot and heat at a low
temperature. Whisk mixture by
hand until the chocolate melts
and cocoa powder is mixed in
well. Don’t let the mixture boil!
Remove from heat and let it cool
down. Pour into four pots of
bowls of about 80ml and let set
in the fridge overnight.
To serve:
Serve bowls of dark chocolate ice
cream with fresh pomegranate
pits and or lemon slices and
freshly grounded black pepper.

Pumpkin cake with rum and honey yogurt
Serves: 4
For the pumpkin cake you’ll need:
1 kg pumpkin (cut into blocks); 1 cinnamon stick; 40 ml water;
3 eggs (separated); 220 g sugar; 30 ml (2 tbsp) honey; 30 ml (2 tbsp) dark
rum; 25 g flour; 50 g cornflour
For the rum and honey yogurt you’ll need:
150 ml cream; 200 ml Greek yogurt; 10 ml (2 tsp) rum; 50 ml honey
To make the pumpkin cake:
Boil the pumpkin and cinnamon stick in water until soft. Drain water and
let cool down. Remove the cinnamon stick. Pour into a food processor and
pulp until puree. Preheat oven to 200 °C. Grease a 24 cm cake pan. Mix egg
yolks and sugar and whisk until pale yellow. Add honey and whisk until
blended. Add the rum and pumpkin to the egg mixture. Sift the flour and
cornflour, add to the mixture and mix well. Whisk egg whites until stiff and
fold into mixture. Pour batter into greased pans and bake for 40 minutes or
until done. Let cool down for 10-15 minutes.
To make the rum and honey yogurt:
Whisk cream until thick. Add Greek yogurt and whisk until blended. Add
rum and honey and mix well.
To serve:
Cut pumpkin cake into slices and add a dab of rum and honey yogurt.
Brownies
Serves: 4
You’ll need:
250 g dark chocolate; 300 g brown sugar;
250 g butter; 3 large eggs; 1 egg yolk;
60 g flour; 60 g cacao powder; 2,5 ml (½
tsp) baking powder; 150 g chopped pecan
nuts; 5 ml (1 tsp) chilli flakes; 2,5 ml (½ tsp)
Maldon salt
To make:
Preheat oven to 180 °C. Grease 24 cm
cake pan or use baking paper. Chop dark
chocolate into smaller pieces and set 40g
aside. Melt chocolate pieces, brown sugar
and butter together. Heat until chocolate
and sugar melts. Set aside to cool down.
Beat eggs and egg yolk with a fork. Sift
flour, cacao powder and baking powder
together. Add egg to cooled chocolate
mixture and mix well. Add flour mixture
and stir with a metal spoon. Fold rest of
the chocolate in. Pour batter into prepared
oven pans and bake for 20 minutes.
Remove when baked and sprinkle with
nuts. Press nuts gently into the batter. Place
back in the oven and bake for a further 20
minutes. (To test if done, brownies have to
be sticky, not raw). Remove from oven and
sprinkle with salt and chilli flakes. Chill in
fridge, cut into blocks and serve.
