Message from the Board
It’s another February and another leap year! Most of the superstitions
about Leap Year or Leap Day have to do with luck
– whether you have it or not. The Scottish thought it unlucky
to be born on leap day and the Greeks thought it unlucky to
marry during leap year and particularly on Leap Day! In old
English law, February 29 didn’t have legal status and was ignored.
As a child, you might have wondered what it would be like
to have a Leap Day birthday. Worldwide, there are approximately
4,000,000 people who have a February 29 birthday,
including a few who became quite famous: Jimmy Dorsey,
Dinah Shore, Cam Ward and Simon Gagné. When would you
celebrate your birthday? In the United Kingdom and Hong
Kong, your birthday would be on March 1 but in New Zealand,
your non-leap birthdays would have been on February
28 as far as Driver Licensing is concerned.
In 2008, Canada and numerous European nations held the
first Rare Disease Day on February 29. Organizers chose this
“rare day” to raise awareness of unknown or overlooked illnesses
with goals to increase support for sufferers of rare diseases
and increase funding for research into treatments and
cures for rare diseases. Since 2008, Rare Disease Day has expanded
with observations in 80 participating nations.
What do you plan to do with your extra day this month?
February is also Heart and Stroke Awareness month. Set aside
some time to visit heartandstroke.ca to learn more about these
conditions, warning signs, and treatments. Many of the lifestyle
risk factors are within our control. The website’s risk assessment
tool offers insight into your personal circumstances
to help you set and track goals. The tool will recommend
changes to live a healthier life which may add years to your
life. What better way to spend part of the extra day you’re
getting this year than to learn about changes that can have that
much impact? And, if you have a Leap Day birthday, Happy
Birthday!
VALENTINE’S DAY FACTS
In addition to Canada, Valentine’s Day is celebrated
in the United States, Mexico, the United Kingdom,
France and Australia. In Great Britain, Valentine’s
Day began to be popularly celebrated around the
17th century. By the middle of the 18th, it was common
for friends and lovers of all social classes to
exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten
notes and by 1900, printed cards began to replace
written letters due to improvements in printing technology.
Ready-made cards were an easy way for
people to express their emotions in a time when direct
expression of one’s feelings was discouraged.
Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase
in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings.
Americans probably began exchanging hand-made
valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A.
Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines
in America. Howland, known as the “Mother
of the Valentine,” made elaborate creations with real
lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as “scrap.”
Today, according to the Greeting Card Association,
an estimated 145 million Valentine’s Day cards are
sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second
largest card-sending holiday of the year (more cards
are sent at Christmas). Women purchase approximately
85 percent of all valentines.
The First Valentine Was Written From a Prison
Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the
Middle Ages, though written Valentines didn’t begin
to appear until after 1400. The oldest known valentine
still in existence today was a poem written in
1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while
he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following
his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. (The greeting
is now part of the manuscript collection of the British
Library in London, England.)
Several years later, it is believed that King Henry
V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a
valentine note to Catherine of Valois.
Box of Chocolates
The Valentine’s Day tradition of giving a box of
candy was started in the 19th century by Richard
Cadbury, head of the British chocolate manufacturing
family. With a new technique recently established
at the company to create more varieties of
chocolate, Cadbury pounced on the opportunity to
sell the chocolates as part of the beloved holiday.
The service that volunteer Snow Angels provide
contributes a tremendous amount to the overall
well-being of our community. Volunteering with
the program is truly “the neighbourly thing to do”
and is a great way for families to volunteer together,
or high school students to complete their 40-
hour community service requirement.
A volunteer snow removal service for seniors
and persons with disabilities 519-822-1155
In partnership with the City of Guelph, we offer
a volunteer snow removal service for eligible seniors
and persons with physical disabilities. During
a significant snow event, after the residential
streets are plowed, volunteers visit their match
within 24 hours to clear the windrow (the accumulation
of snow left at the end of a driveway).
Last year, 73 Snow Angels contributed 949
hours of snow shovelling service. In total, 184
residents were helped during the winter season of
which one shared, “without the help of our Snow
Angel, it would be difficult for us to stay in our
home.”
Residents eligible to receive this service:
- Must reside in the City of Guelph in a single
dwelling or semi-detached house with private
driveway.
- Are unable to remove their own snow and cannot
afford to pay for snow removal.
- Have no able-bodied person living in the household
to shovel snow.
- Must be a senior citizen (aged 65 years or older)
and/or have a physical disability.
Please note that the People and Information Network
(PIN) reserves the right to ask for documentation
verifying proof of disability and/or inability
to pay for private snow removal services in order
to ensure services are provided to those in our
community who truly require assistance.
TOP 10 THINGS TO DO DURING A SNOWFALL
#10: Go Slow
Motorists are reminded to adjust their driving
to the road conditions.
#9: Remember — Amber & Blue — Snow
Plow Coming Through!
When sharing the road with plows, always
have your headlights on and give the plow
plenty of room. Oncoming vehicles should
keep to the right.
#8: Think — Right is Wrong
Never pass a snow plow on the right-hand
side where the snow comes flying out of the
plow.
#7: Help Your Hydrant
If your hydrant is buried by drifts or snowbanks,
please dig it out or call the Waterworks
Division @ 519-837-5627.
#6: If You Want to Talk
If you wish to make an inquiry, email us at
waterworks@guelph.ca or call us at 519-837-
5628. Remember, the person who takes your
call wants to help you. Your courtesy is appreciated.
#5: Call for Help
If you are a senior or a person with a disability
and require assistance to clear your driveway,
a call to the following numbers may
provide some help on a voluntary and/or for a
fee basis:
#3: Be Intersection Intelligent
If we experience several severe storms, snowbanks
may get extremely high. Please watch
for small children and other pedestrians when
you reach an intersection or pull out of your
driveway.
#2: Ask Yourself if It’s Wise to Park
Parked cars are a snowplow operator’s biggest
obstacle. If your street has not been plowed,
PLEASE do not park on it. In Guelph, parking
is prohibited on most city streets between 2:00
am and 6:00 am nightly. Parking is only permitted
where traffic signs indicate. Guest exemptions
may be allowed under certain conditions.
For more information, contact our By-
Law Enforcement office at 519-836-PARK
(7275).
#1: Be Patient
As soon as a storm begins, we start plowing.
We begin with major arteries. Then, remaining
arterials, collectors, bus routes, and steep hills.
After more than 6” has fallen, we plow residential
streets. It takes a minimum of 12 hours and
a maximum of 18 to plow all city streets.
#4: Don’t Get the Windrow Woes
We understand your frustration when you
clear your driveway and then a plow comes
by and leaves a pile of snow — a windrow.
Unfortunately, it’s impossible to plow without
leaving one.
February is Heart Month
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada
chooses February to focus on all things heart
healthy.
Diets that are high in saturated and trans
fats can contribute to the development of
heart disease. Aiming to eat a diet moderate
in healthy fats may reduce your risk of
developing heart disease.
Many sweet treats are unfortunately high in
saturated and trans fats. These cookies are
low in saturated fat but give your body
necessary unsaturated fats. This recipe makes
just over a dozen cookies, so you may want
to make a double batch or they will be gone
in no time!
Muesli Cookies (Makes 15 cookies)
Ingredients
2/3 cup (150 mL) non-hydrogenated
margarine
1/2 cup (125 mL) brown sugar, packed
1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla extract

1 egg
2 cups (625 mL) Swiss muesli cereal
1/2 cup (125 mL) whole wheat flour
1 tsp (5 mL) baking powder
1 tsp (5 mL) baking soda
1/8 tsp (1 mL) salt
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a
cookie sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a large bowl, mix margarine and brown
sugar together.
3. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix
with a large spoon.
4. Spoon 2 tbsps (25 ml) portions of the
batter onto a cookie sheet (makes about
15 cookies) and bake for 10 minutes.
Administraon Office — 519‐837‐5696
I am thrilled to have been chosen to replace Pat Gage in the role of
administrative assistant for Community Support Services of Guelph
Wellington Seniors Association. May her journey into retirement be
filled with fun and rewarding activities.
As a member of the “55-plus” club, I bring my life’s experiences of
raising 4 children, working in various support roles to so many wonderful
clients and the general public to my new position.
My oldest son was born deaf, so communicating in Sign Language
is something I treasure. My youngest son gained his angel wings at the
early age of 18 (7 years ago) and my journey as a bereaved parent has
shown me my strengths and taught me that we never know what is behind
a person’s smiling face or unexplained behaviour. But taking
time to learn about people results in amazing discoveries.
My 2 daughters keep me on my toes and my 4 step-children are as
wonderful as my husband! One granddaughter and 2 grandsons keep
me young.
Please call and let me know how we can help you enjoy your life
and we will do our very best!
SNOWFLAKE DANCE
Jingle bells rocked and seniors strutted as the final dance of the year went down on the Friday before
Christmas. A big crowd of keen seniors gathered in the Evergreen Centre’s auditorium to dance
to music played by DJ Ted Lavoie.
Six dances are planned for 2020. The next one is planned for Friday, March 13, with a St. Patrick’s
Day theme. Couples and singles are welcome. You don’t have to be a member of the GWSA
to get in on the fun. All you need is an $8 admission ticket. Light refreshments are provided.
National Flag of Canada Day is observed annually
on February 15, commemorating the inauguration
of the Flag of Canada on that date in 1965.
The day is marked by flying the flag, occasional
public ceremonies, and educational programs in
schools.
“The flag is the symbol of the nation’s unity,
for it, beyond any doubt, represents all the citizens
of Canada without distinction of race, language,
belief or opinion,” declared the Speaker of the
Senate at the Inauguration of the new flag in 1965.
On February 15, 1965, our national flag was
raised for the first time on Parliament Hill. Canada
was just two years away from centennial celebrations
when the Maple Leaf flag was made official
by Royal Proclamation. In 1996, February 15 was
declared National Flag of Canada Day and has
been observed every year since.
The Maple Leaf flag replaced the Canadian Red
Ensign, which had been, with various successive
alterations, in conventional use as a Canadian national
flag since 1868. Under the leadership of
Prime Minister Lester Pearson, resolutions recommending
the new flag were passed by the House
of Commons on December 15, 1964, and by the
Senate two days later.
The flag, designed by George Stanley, was proclaimed
by Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, on January
28, 1965, and took effect "upon, from and
after" February 15.
It has been suggested that Flag Day should be
declared a national statutory holiday. That suggestion
grew louder as the flag celebrated its 50th anniversary
in 2015.
Although National Flag of Canada Day is not a
holiday, it is celebrated with many events around
the country.
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by
using a unique combination of
punch needle and special silk-like
rayon thread. When completed,
many pictures resemble delicately
shaded paintings. In fact, the needle
is held and operates in much
the same manner as an artist’s
brush or pencil. The Bunka artist
uses many different stitch techniques
in order to achieve the desired
effect of depth and interest,
but unlike other forms of needle
art, there are no knots to tie and
mistakes are easily corrected. This
group is for all skill levels and
meets every Wednesday from 9:15
a.m. to noon in Room 3.
hearing loss by co-operating with
and assisting professionals who
deal with it; promoting hearing accessibility
within our own community;
holding regular information
sessions to encourage greater understanding
of the problem and
what is available to help.
We meet the first Wednesday of
each month from October through
May from 2-3:30 pm in the Boardroom.
We discuss problems affecting
those with hearing loss and try
to find solutions. Our meetings also
have a social component. For
further information, call Marianne
Line Dancing
Line dances are choreographed
dances with a repeating series of
steps that are performed in unison
by a group of people in lines, rows
or circles. One of the great things
about line dancing is that no experience
is necessary. Line dances
are easy to learn, and as with any
other style of dance, the more you
do it, the better you will become.
Instructors do a walk-through before
each dance and then demonstrate
and call the steps as the music
plays. You don’t need a partner,
just come have fun. We dance all
year to a wide variety of music.
Everyone welcome!
Our classes are for beginner to improved
(beginner plus):
Mondays – 9:30 to 11:45 a.m.
We teach basic steps at 9:15 a.m.
Thursdays -1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
We teach basic steps at 12:45 p.m.
Into Focus Photography
Our club got off to a spirited start
in January. Our field trip took us to
the centre of Guelph for a tour of
the new Spring Mill Distillery.
Somebody famous once said that
you shouldn’t see how sausages
and laws are made. You could add
whiskey to the list, but it must be
seen to be photographed. Some of
our members have posted photos
from the field trip on our website
Our theme for January was Tops.
The results are in the frames on the
Evergreen Restaurant’s walls. February’s
theme is Lights. It’s always
a treat to see the lights of inspiration
and imagination switch on
when our members tackle a monthly
theme.
We are a friendly group of amateur
photographers with equipment
ranging from mobile phones and
point and shoot cameras to fancy
DSLR models. We share a common
interest in photography as a
hobby and we learn from each other.
New members are always welcome.
Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport in which four
players use solid paddles made of
wood or composite materials to hit
a perforated polymer ball over a
net. The sport shares features of
other racquet sports: the dimensions
and layout of a badminton
court and a net and rules similar to
tennis, with a few modifications.
This sport is for people of all
ages who are looking for some fun,
laughter, socialization and exercise.
It’s easy to learn, but can be
challenging for those with a competitive
nature. All levels of skill
invited. Pickleball equipment is
provided.
Scrabble
Our Scrabble group meets Thursdays
from 1:00 to 3:45 pm at the
tables in the Evergreen Hallway
near the Library. Cost is $1.00 per
visit. We play relaxed, but challenging
games using the Scrabble
Dictionary 6 th Edition as our reference.
Skill levels range from beginner
to advanced. Come play at
whatever table you wish. Enjoy a
laugh, score a Bingo if you can,
T S - F 2020 — V. 44, N. 6
and learn a new word or two with
other word lovers!
Shuffleboard
Come on out and join our group.
Enjoy some gentle exercise, friendship
and fun. Membership is available
to all paid-up GWSA members
for a $10 fee every six
months. You also have the option
of paying $1.00 per game. Register
the first time you play. Beginners
are welcome and instruction is
available. The group plays Tuesdays
and Wednesdays from 1:30 to
3 p.m.
Silvertones
This year, the Silvertones Choir
will celebrate its 40th Anniversary.
The Choir was formed in 1980
and now boasts almost 60 members.
Our mixed group of seniors,
aged from 55+ to 100, share the
love of singing - songs old and
new. They also love to entertain
with their singing and to spread
cheer.
Until mid-February, we will be
preparing, learning and practicing
our new repertoire for the 2020
Winter/Spring season of sing-outs
in local seniors’ and retirement
homes and residences. We will be
presenting a selection of songs
from the wonderful musical BRIG-
ADOON set in the mountains of
Scotland.
Songs will include, among many
others, ‘Brigadoon’, ‘Almost Like
Being in Love’, ‘Heather on the
Hill’ and ‘From This Day On’. All
great favourites!
We have also chosen to take a
third song from the Cape Breton
Chorale Series ‘Here’s to Song’ by
Alistair MacGillivray following
the success of the ‘Song to the
Mira’ at Christmas.
The first sing out will be on February
21 at St. Joseph’s Health
Care Centre at 2:00 p.m.
For more information about joining
the choir, please call Doreen
Muir at 519-831-8323.
Skiing
For the 2020 ski season, it costs
$10.00 plus HST to join the Everwhite
Ski Club. You register and
pay for the Downhill Ski Club at
the front desk of the Evergreen
Centre. It helps to own a 5-7 Pass
purchased from Blue Mountain
well before the start of the 2020 ski
season. Every Monday, we carpool
by meeting at the lower Evergreen
Parking Lot by the Enabling Garden
at 8:00 am, drive to Blue
Mountain, and return to Guelph by
6:00 pm.
Evergreen Snooker Club
The Evergreen Snooker Club is
composed of a group of active,
friendly players with skill levels
covering the full spectrum from
learner/beginner to accomplished
player. If you are interested in
learning the game, or have played
in the past and want to get back
into it, please drop by the Snooker
Room. You will be assured a warm
welcome and a place to try your
hand at one of our three tables. The
Snooker Room is open weekdays
between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm and
any other time the Evergreen Centre
may be open.
The primary focus of the club is
to have fun, build friendships and
socialize. Your snooker skill level
is irrelevant, so don’t feel intimidated
if you are a beginner. Prospective
members may visit the
club room up to three times without
charge to help with their decision
on whether to join. While
most of the current members are
men, there is a small group of
women who play regularly
(typically on Tuesday mornings),
so ladies, don’t be shy, give it a
try.
Membership is available to all
paid-up members of the GWSA on
payment of the prescribed annual
snooker activity fee. The current
Texas Hold ’Em
Why not come out and have fun
with us?
We are averaging about 18 players
a week. We are situated in the
Dining Room as we find this a
more comfortable place to play
and the tables are exactly right for
us.
We charge $1.50 per week and
pretty well all of that goes to
GWSA.
We play on Tuesday nights. Our
time format is from 6:30 to 8:30
p.m.
Each player starts off with
$602.00 in real casino chips; we do
not play for money, more for bragging
rights, and the one with the
most chips each week is the winner.
We play until you are knocked
out or until 8:30, whichever comes
first.
We will gladly teach anyone
who is interested in playing.
Our aim is to have fun and enjoy
a sociable game of Texas Hold
’Em.
We welcome everyone who
wants to play and enjoys company.
Remember, you have to be a
member of GWSA to play.
Walking Club
Our walking season is over and
won’t recommence until April.
However, we will still be keeping
in touch with one another and our
winter social will be held on Tuesday,
February 11, at the Evergreen
Centre from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m.
Ralph Van Haeren will be giving
us a presentation on his travels and
we are looking forward to it.
Please make note of this date, as
we have not been able to have
Thursdays all the time. Hope this
will make the winter seem a bit
shorter! We look forward to seeing
you all there.
Watercolour Painters
The Evergreen Watercolour Painters
provide an opportunity for watercolour
painters to practise their
hobby along with others sharing
the same interest, while encouraging
one another and receiving information,
ideas and inspiration.
While we do not offer classes or
lessons, we welcome accomplished
watercolour painters.
There is a small annual membership
fee and membership with the
GWSA is required. We meet on
the 1st and 5th Wednesday from
12:30 to 4:00 pm and the 3rd
Wednesday from 9:30 am - 4:00
pm in Room 2.
A VIEW FROM THE BOOK NOOK
Chris Fraser
The Book Nook —
“A Lending Library”
We are open Monday to
Friday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Here is a most interesting book I
hope many of you will read “Me”
by Elton John.
He tells of his extraordinary life
with honesty and of his troubled
childhood as well as his many successes
as a singer song-writer for
several decades.
He had several addictions, loved
to collect art and vinyl records so
much that his house was full of
stuff he had collected over the
years.
EVERGREEN MARKET
He has lived a lavish lifestyle
and always enjoyed being on stage
with an audience, dressed in outrageous
costumes, which is where he
felt the most loved.
After many years of drug use, he
finally got cleaned up and founded
the Elton John Aids Foundation to
which he donated a great deal of
money to help others suffering
with this dreadful disease.
The movie “Rocketman” was
released in 2019, which tells Elton
John’s life story, featuring many of
his hit singles.
This book is written so openly
and frankly by him in his own
words, of his heartaches and triumphs
and finally finding happiness.
I really enjoyed reading this
book and hope you will too.
Happy Reading,
Process for GWSA Trips
General: (1) All travellers on GWSA Travel Club trips should be members of the Guelph Wellington Seniors Association.
Non-members are now able to book trips two weeks after members provided room is still available.
(2) Memberships are payable to the City of Guelph — Visa, MasterCard, Cash or Cheque may be used unless otherwise indicated.
(3) Please refrain from using scented products during GWSA trips.
Booking Your Trip: (1) Service numbers will be issued at the Centre starting at 8:30 am the day of trip bookings. (2)
Phone bookings to 519-823-1291 will start at 9:00 am on the same day. (3) Travellers may book for two GWSA members the first
morning of the trip bookings starting at 9:00 am. (4) The purchaser of day trip tickets is responsible for finding a replacement if he
or she is unable to travel. A waiting list may be consulted. A Doctor’s certificate is required for a refund.
Accessibility: (1) Please inquire about accessible seating prior to booking your ticket. As with all buses, accessible seating
is limited. You can help us ensure that we use this seating as efficiently as possible by providing information about your assistive
device. Please note that:
Travellers who will be using a powered wheelchair on trips are advised to note this when registering. While our trips are accessible,
seating for a powered wheelchair on the bus is limited and will be spoken for on a first come first serve basis. We
cannot accommodate scooters on the buses.
Travellers who can transfer to a bus seat may have their collapsible, manual wheelchair or walker stored in the cargo area of
the bus if required.
Lift Limit: 500 lbs maximum weight (wheelchair and person combined)
Lift Width: 32 inches
(2) Travellers with a disability, who require assistance during the trip, must be accompanied by a person who is fully capable
of rendering such assistance (this person must be an adult for some trips). The cost for this assistant will be the fee published
for the trip.
If you have any questions, please call the front desk at 519-823-1291.
Country Music’s biggest stars singing their greatest hits: Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Reba McEntire to
name a few. You will enjoy a delicious buffet lunch consisting of salads, entrees, desserts and coffee or tea
before the show. Price includes the show, lunch, all taxes and gratuities and a tip for our driver. Travel is by
school bus.
It takes time to put these trips together and we need YOUR commitment to make these trips actually happen!
DON’T WAIT! That means booking your seat BEFORE the trip has to be cancelled due to low numbers.
The Travel Committee must give the number of bookings a MONTH before the date of the trip and, if there aren’t enough
reservations AT THAT TIME, the trip will be cancelled! If you have already booked your seat, you will get a refund.
The GWSA will not provide refunds if the trip itinerary is altered due to circumstances beyond the control of the GWSA
Travel Club. If there is a 'refund or compensation' to the travellers as determined by the refund policy of the Transportation
Company or the Booking Company, the GWSA travellers will receive the refund.
NEWS: Members or Non-Members can now book any trip from the Great Canadian Holidays catalogue by phoning
Great Canadian Holidays at 1-800-461-8687 and book your trip yourself. Just say you’re a member of the Evergreen
Seniors Community Centre in Guelph and we will receive a commission for that trip.
Please do not park your vehicles in the Evergreen parking lot while you are on a day trip.
Vehicles must be left at the Carousel parking area in Riverside Park where you will board the bus. This allows for other
members to have a place to park when they come throughout the day.
