INTERVIEW BY JESSE JO STARK

PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAURIE LYNN STARK

There aren’t a lot of humans like Nicole...I also

don’t meet a lot of families that I admire besides

mine...but The Richie-Maddens are something

to look at, for they are so rare...their love for one

another and for their kids is undeniable ...Joel

looks at Nicole like my dad does my mom...

Nicole is full of life. Humor till it hurts...beauty

that inspires and full of wisdom and passion...

happy to know you’s...

JJ

NR

JJAlright!

NR: I think I was around

twelve or thirteen when I

first met your mom and dad.

Your mom was really good

friends with Diane, my step

mom. Diane had this… you

probably don’t remember

when organizers were really

in, when Filofax were really

cool. Remember that? I think

I’m gonna re-get one. I love

them. Diane had a Chrome

Hearts one and I thought that

it was the coolest thing ever.

It was the first time that I was

introduced to Chrome Hearts

and she was like “Oh my

friends Laurie and Richard---

they’re so cool”. They’re these

fashion, like bikers” I don’t

know, whatever she said. And

that was the first time that I

met your parents and got to

know you guys. Ever since

then, you guys have always

treated me like family. And it’s

been one hell of a ride.

JJ: We love ya Nicole.

NR: Alright, JesseJo!

JJ: Alright, well how are you?

NR: I’m good!

JJ: So where are we going?

Star, season 2 started last week. We’re

gonna be filming today at Hollywood

center. That’s where we shoot the

show.

JJ: Do you enjoy it?

NR: I love it. I’m excited to be back.

The designers have really stepped up

their game this season. We’ve only

done one episode and already, I see

some people that I feel are gonna be

around for a long time.

JJ: Stoked to hear that.

JJ: I went to Macy’s the other day.

NR: You did?

JJ: Yes, to get yer sweater but they were

sold out.

NR: Oh the colour block sweater?

JJ: Yes so I’m going to order it online

but I saw how everything was set up

and it looked good.

NR: Thanks!

JJ: And I saw you on the bus in Venice

the other day. Your all over!

NR: I love it.

JJ: How’d you and Joel meet?

NR: Joel and I met through a mutual

friend, not even thinking that it would

become anything. Just more like a

casual hangout like “oh you guys

are both singles, you guys should

hang” never thinking that it would go

anywhere because I think Joel just got

out of a relationship and I just wasn’t

in the place to be in a relationship and

it couldn’t have been a worst time for

us to meet but you know it just worked.

JJ: Isn’t that crazy though?

NR: Yeah.

JJ: Did you guys like each other?

NR: Haha, yes, can you imagine? We

liked each other straight away which is

funny because we’re so opposite.

JJ: That’s rad.

JJ: How is it being a mommy? Your

kids are the cutest!

NR: Thank you. It is obviously, the

best thing in the world as cliché as it

is to say. There are no other feelings

like it. But that’s the truth, there

really isn’t. You know it’s really just a

pleasure to watch my kids experience

life and get to experience it with them

all over again.

JJ: And they look just like you guys, its

insane how he looks just like Joel.

NR: And how Harlow looks just like

me, its crazy isn’t it.

JJ: I was telling my cousin the other

day at work, I said the way Joel speaks

about you the way you guys interact,

your humor it’s like the whole dynamic

of the family is really something to

look up to.

NR: Its fun, we have a bantering

relationship. And its fun, I wouldn’t

have it any other way.

JJ: So what’s the difference between

House Of Harlow and Winter Kate?

NR: House of Harlow is all my

accessories, shoes, handbags, eyewear

and jewelry. And Winter Kate is ready

to wear.

JJ: Oh, I see.

NR: Ultimately, where it’s starting to

go is Winter Kate will be the higher

price line. I am going to be producing

fine jewelry under the Winter Kate’s

name and so, in the next few years it

will be pretty clear.

JJ: Have you ever had a runway show?

NR: I never had a runway show. Its

important for me to just make sure

that I have everything solid and

firm on the ground before taking on

yet, something else and putting on a

runway show. I’ve been doing ready to

wear for three years now and I finally

feel like, I’m starting to understand

my customers and my brand and my

aesthetics. And you know, it definitely

takes you awhile to figure out your

signature and to just really make it

a big full collection. As I’m sure you

know.

JJ: Yes, I know, its crazy. For me, I’m

still learning everyday, new stuff.

NR: That’s the crazy thing about

this business is that we all kindda just

learn as we go and it changes so fast.

Especially with things being available

on the Internet and all that stuff

where you’re just kind of is forced to

go along with it, you know?

JJ: I know, it goes so fast.

NR: Well, we should collaborate

together. I love when I went and

did the shoot at the Chrome Hearts

factory with your mom.

JJ: We loved having you.

NR: But I’ve never really been in any

space that’s, that much of a creative

family atmosphere. Like the energy

that’s just like it’s really anything goes

in there and just, you know the whole

dynamic between your brother and

sister and your mom and your dad

is like, you can step in there and I

feel you can be like “lets make like

Chrome Hearts ladders” and you’d

be like “okay!” and its just happens

you know.

JJ: Hahaha it’s true, there’s no

limitations at Chrome Hearts.

just such a trip because, I remember

when I was about thirteen I just

remembered this, I saw you at Nobu

and I had this skeleton top on, with

little skeletons. And you said, “I have

that, that’s like my favourite shirt”

and I just thought I was the coolest

person ever because you were doing

The Simple Life or whatever and I

was like “I’m the shit”.

NR: But by the way! You know that

all my friends, me and Katie and

everybody, we all sit around and

talk about how cool you are. We’re

like “ah JesseJo is soo f-ing cool. So

effortless and you’re just” you really

are, you are the coolest thing around

so maybe thinking you were cool

really helped you get there, cause you

really are.

JJ

NR: But its such a cool environment

to be in and I love the warehouse, I

love the way it looks, just the whole

vibe and energy is just really really

cool.

JJ: We’re so happy you came, its

about time! And the photos of you

are beautiful.

NR: They are, they’re amazing. I’m

so happy for Laurie.

JJ: Yeah, she’s kicking ass.

NR: Yeah, she sure is.

JJ: The other day I was talking to

Cher about you because she told

me how you and Elijah used to run

around the house and I told her I

was interviewing you. And it was

JJ: haha love that.

JJ: My brother and sister had a

question for you.

NR: Yes.

JJ: My brother wants to know how

you like your steak?

NR: How I like my steak? Medium.

I used to like medium well but now I

like my steak medium.

JJ: And my sister asked if you’re

happy?

NR: I am very very happy. I’m

actually the happiest I’ve ever been

What super power do you have?

the power to make pancake pyramids flawlessly

Describe your feelings when you see a wasps nest.

I’ve never seen a wasps nest, but I despise any

thing that looks similar to a fly, a little nasty thing

with wings, I imagine them crawling into my ear.

What is art?

I don’t really know the right answer for that

without sounding dumb.

If you happen to see yourself in a dream what

message would you like to give yourself?

to not wake up. dreaming is what I look forward to

every night.

Do you know what a cow magnet is?

I imagine milk spilling on the fridge

When the the police question you about Jesse Jo

& they ask if you saw any signs of trouble , what will

you tell them?

“I always have my eye on her.”

Tell us about mama yer hairless rat?

she lives in a three story rat mansion, eats cat

food, cheerios and bananas, and sleeps all day.

Who’s yer favorite friend you have ever drawn?

I don’t tend to draw friends, I might offend

someone.

What horrible secret about yourself would you

never tell anyone?

I don’t share any of my secrets, I don’t share much

about myself anyways.

If you could see in a big field all the chickens you

have eaten in your life, how many would it be?

I’d see thousands of chickens in chicken nugget

form.

Do you ever listen to the voices screaming inside

your head?

they’re the only voices I listen to, its my own type

of therapy.

CLIMBING

HIGHER

My legs are absolutely toasted as I write this. Have I

over-trained for my climb up Mt. Rainer this Monday?

I DO have a tendency to do that kind of thing. I am

an addict.

My head is kind of swimming too. I have read over

30 books on mountain-climbing, and have had an

armchair fascination with the terror that can go down,

up there in them hills. Am I ‘man’ enough?

But I HAVE two whole and intact legs, and I shrink

into myself for even complaining in my lone corner.

My buddy Tim Medvetz is bringing along a single

(leg) amputee Marine on this climb (Cpl. Kionte

Storey). This whole deal actually STANDS for

something. Something much, much bigger than me

and my fear and my physical pain from over-training

or whatever. I’ve got to do things like this. To be a

good father, is to lead, right?

But my kids got into a new school down in LA,

and that school starts a whole 3 weeks earlier than

their previous school. So, they won’t be here in the

Northwest to witness their old Dad doing this climb.

They won’t be here to meet the veteran. I am on my

own. I found out about the school date change too

late to switch the climb. I am facing a mountain of

snow-covered earth. Probably thinking too much too,

about schools and girls and Katy Perry and Childress

Gambino at the Palladium in Hollywood while I’m not

there to chaperon, and am I a good Dad? and, will

the Loaded tour in the UK be the right move, and,

and , and….

“My head feels like a mound of

snow-covered earth.”

The weather here in town has been absolutely

incredible. When I go to good gigs here, and hang

out with good people who could give two fucks about

what other people think of them; it reminds me of the

soul and character of this city. I love it here. I love the

coffee. I love the people. I think Kasey Anderson is a

fucking genius, and John Roderick too. I love Seattle.

Maybe we aren’t as sexy as some other places,

but who cares? We have Salmon and Mt. Rainer as

our backdrop.

Oh crap. Mt. Rainer…….

When I started to write this story about The

Heroes Project sponsored climb of Mt. Rainer for

Cpl. Kionte Storey; there was really no way that I’d be

able to forecast just how awesome this undertaking

would be.

23 year-old Storey lost his right leg to an IED in

Afghanistan one year ago, and this climb would be

a test of where he was choosing to go in this life,

as opposed to perhaps wallowing or feeling sorry

for himself. The Heroes Project provides a healthy

outlet for some of these kids. What could be a better

physical and mental symbol for overcoming, then

some huge mountain.

And Mt. Rainer ain’t no joke. I was given the

opportunity to tag along for the climb.

The climb up to 10,000 ft Camp Muir is test enough

for anyone really. To Muir, the eventual Rainer

summiter must carry everything he or she needs for

a few day stay; tents, pads, stoves, food, pots and

pans, shovels, rope, crampons, ice-axes, helmets,

food, layers of different types of clothes, and etc.

That initial push to Muir is arduous as hell. Kionte

Storey listened to Linkin Park on his iPod, and did

not utter one word of complaint about his leg or the

climb. He just smiled and marveled at the impossible

scenery. Snow and mountains and glaciers are not the

‘norm’ to a kid from Stockton, California.

Our climbing leaders were three gregarious Everestsummiter

men. On the mountain-these dudes were

the rock stars. At Muir, you would here constant

whispers about the three dudes that Kionte and I were

with. We were safe as one could really be with these

three dudes, and hence, they strongly suggested that

we take an extra day to rest at Muir, and acclimatize

to the altitude. A sound plan.

Now listen; for my part, I had trained my ass off

for this climb.

Being invited along on this climb, meant that I

should also be ready and able to help wherever and

whenever I could. I climbed stairs all over Seattle.

I ran and lifted weights. I did lunges and strange

looking ‘burpies’ that exhaust the body. I ate good,

and tried to rest my body before this climb. I was

ready dammit…..READY AS HELL.

On summit night (you ‘wake up’ at about 10:30pm,

get ready, eat, and begin the actual summit-push

at about midnight in the dark), Kionte was looking

strong, and I felt ready and able. The weather was

good and somewhat stable-and before we knew it, we

were cramponing up some icy ledges, and hopping

over crevices and running across dicey rock and ice

fall areas.

It is known, that some people adjust better than

other to altitude. I have read countless books on

different climbs and climbers, and the fact remainsthat

modern science still hasn’t really figured out why

altitude can and will affect different people-no matter

their fitness levels-in very different ways.

My right eye suddenly blurred at about 11,000 ft. I

kept it quiet, as I didn’t want to be the guy who held

up anything. Pride does play a factor up here, and

pride is also very dangerous on these slippery, steep,

and treacherous places.

“Pride does play a factor up

here, and pride is also very

dangerous on these slippery,

steep and treacherous places.”

In the dark, I suddenly saw the outline of ‘little’

Tahoma, the sister mountain of Rainer; its’ summit

was actually below me. My body felt strong- lifted by

the sight of young Cpl. Storey and his headlamp

arduously making its way higher just above me. Blurry

guy. Think of punk rock. Think martial arts. Think of

your family, and think of Kionte.

“Don’t be ‘that’ guy. Think of

punk Rock.”

At about 12,800 feet, a guide from another climb

came up to me, and announced that he thought I had

cerebral edema “and could die soon if he doesn’t get

down very quickly”. Hey climber-dude-alarmist-guy….

chill the fuck out. Without me really knowing, I guess

my eyes were rolling around a bit, and I was stumbling

like a drunken sailor. What the?! I felt strong as a bull!

Kionte went into ‘Marine mode’, and it was time to

turn this climb around. The mission was now to get

your erstwhile columnist down the damn mountain.

Heaving, stumbling, and talking non-sense (I guess).

“Hey climber-dude-alarmist

guy...chill the fuck out. ”

Life is funny sometimes, and a situation that was

maybe supposed to go one particular way, can often

go quite another direction. I had to pull everything

I had from deep inside of me just to get down. Cpl.

Storey I am sure, gained a confidence. He took

another one for the team, and made sure his fellow

brother was okay.

Cpl. Storey will now attempt Mt. Vinson in the South Pole.

Me? Well, that mountain is still there, and I have-after

one week away- trained my eyes back to the summit.

Prosthetic limbs take some time for the user to get

accustomed to. Carrying a pack full of real weight

up slippery snow, rock and ice- can put stress on

these prosthetics that frankly, they were probably not

designed for.

At 12,000 feet, both of my eyes went blurry, and

nausea was overcoming me. It was a sort of step,

step, heave….step, step, heave type of gait. But I still

felt strong, and I hoped that this faze would pass. Just

keep going Duff….it ain’t about you. Don’t be ‘that’
