Dear Ambassadair Guests,
This is my favorite issue of Trips. There’s something about planning a
trip now, in the depths of cold, bitter winter, that excites a soul. It’s a
time of new resolutions, new bucket lists, and new destinations. Our trip
developers have been working overtime to create new places to see,
new things to do, along with fresh takes on our most popular journeys.
Some are long journeys and some are quick trips, but all are filled with
off-the-beaten path discoveries, a-ha moments, preferred access and
of course, a Travel Director each step of the way.
Take the Kentucky History and Whiskey: Bourbon, Bardstown, and the
Belle of Louisville. Spend the night on Whisky Row in Louisville. Dine
in elegance on the Old Kentucky Dinner Train. Picnic at the Jim Beam
American Stillhouse. Taste bourbons at local distilleries.
Or enjoy Vermont in the Summer where you can watch glass hand
blown by artisans at Simon Pierce nestled on the banks of a river. Stay
four nights at the Trapp Family Lodge. Learn about Morgan horses at
a famed farm. Pick your favorite flavor as you tour Ben and Jerry’s Ice
Cream factory.
Consider joining me in July on for a once-in-a-decade experience on our
Oberammbergau Passion Play and Black Forest tour. Or check out our
new Newfoundland and Labrador adventure – what a magical place.
Our Travel Counselors are looking forward to talking with you and
helping you choose the perfect trip. Call us to start planning your
next journey.
Here’s to the new year, filled with happiness, health and the joy
of travel.
Happy Traveling,
Newfoundland & Labrador
The road less
traveled, from
the northernmost
tip of Newfoundland
to the farthest
point east BY KELSEY BATTEN
Did you know? Each humpback whale has a unique
pattern of pigment and scars on its underside
and spends about 90 percent of its time beneath the
water’s surface. Bring your cameras and binoculars for
the amazing opportunity to see humpback whales,
plus more than 20 species of whales and dolphins
along St. Anthony’s coast on a trip to Newfoundland
and Labrador with Ambassadair in July 2020.
Newfoundland and Labrador have an area of more
than 156,370 square miles and when compared to
a U.S. state, would rank fourth in size behind Alaska,
Texas and California. The culture is a product of English,
Irish, French, and Indigenous heritage rich with stories
and legends, explorers, and inventors. The fresh air,
friendly people, and amazing landscapes and views
will make for lasting memories.
Gros Morne National Park, an ancient landscape which
took 485 million years to create and a UNESCO World
Heritage Site, offers amazing scenery with fjords,
towering cliffs, and thunderous waterfalls. The National
Park is home to one of the densest moose populations
in North America, as well as woodland caribou and
black bears.
One of the best places in the world to view icebergs
is Iceberg Alley — the vast corridor of ocean that runs
from Greenland along the east coast of Newfoundland
and Labrador. These 10,000-year-old glacial giants
come in every shape and size, with colors from
snow-white to deep aquamarine. Their sheer size is
stunning, and that’s without seeing the ninety-percent
still below the surface of the ocean. Icebergs are so
plentiful around these parts, they are put to good use
as in Berg water, spirits like Iceberg Vodka, and popular
Iceberg Beer.
Colorful, “jellybean row houses” line the side of steep
hills and hidden alleyways of St. John’s, the capital of
the province, one of the oldest and most easterly cities
in North America. While touring the city, the iconic
Cabot Tower with its castle-like structure built
to commemorate the 400th anniversary of John
Cabot’s discovery of Newfoundland can be seen.
The Bonavista Peninsula is home to the Cape Bonavista
Lighthouse Provincial Historic Site where mariners
for generations have used the light as their only
connection to land while at sea. Also on the Peninsula
is the quaint town of Trinity, where beautifully restored
fishing rooms and saltbox houses can be found.
Puffins, also known as Sea Parrot or Baccalieu Bird are
the provincial bird of Newfoundland and Labrador.
About 95% of all North America’s puffins breed in
colonies around the coasts and the Witless Bay Reserve
boasts the largest colony of puffins in North America
with 260,000 pairs! The movement of them running
and skipping along the water, with their colorful beaks
and feet, is truly a fantastic sight.
Don’t miss the chance to see Newfoundland and
Labrador, Canada this summer. It is definitely a journey
along the road less traveled, but a must see for its
views, nature, and surroundings.
