OUR MISSION: 

Our mission at Varsity Monthly Thumb is to 

photograph athletes from the nearly 30 area 

schools that we cover each month. Our goal 

is to provide high quality photography of every 

Varsity team that each school offers. We do our 

best to make sure we include all sports and get 

photos of as many athletes as we can. Of course, 

all of those won’t fit in the magazine, but we post 

those on our Facebook page and on our website 

(www.misportsphotos.com). We have been 

blessed to be able to grow the magazine over 

the last 9 months and look forward to continued 

growth. Our advertisers are outstanding to work 

with, and we are very grateful that they continue 

to allow us to provide the best coverage. We are 

always looking for additional advertisers so we 

can continue to provide that coverage. We base 

our number of pages on the advertising dollars 

that are received from a specific community. If 

you would like more coverage of your school, 

please let area businesses know to contact us.

community impact as the Players of the Month. Not only are the players of the 

month featured in the magazine and recieve a Player of the Month T-Shirt, VG’s also

LEXI BOYKE HAS BURST ONTO THE GIRLS 

BASKETBALL SCENE THIS SEASON FOR 

FRANKENMUTH. 

While it may come as a shock to some that the freshman is doing so 

well at the varsity level, it’s no surprise for Eagles coach Tom Keller. 

“I’ve been looking forward to coaching Lexi on our varsity since she 

was in fourth grade,” Keller said. “At that time, we put together a 

group of Frankenmuth fourth and fifth graders and formed a travel 

team. It was evident right away that we had a couple of potentially 

special players, Lexi being one of them. She continued playing for 

us for a few years, then moved on to some bigger, more competitive 

travel organizations to continue to work on her game and see better 

competition.” 

In her Frankenmuth debut, Boyke score 10 points and grabbed 

seven rebounds in a win against Corunna. 

From there, the Eagles defeated Reese, Birch Run, Standish Sterling 

and Bridgeport. 

Against Standish Sterling, Boyke recorded her first double-double, 

with 14 points and 13 rebounds, and followed that up with an eightpoint, 

12-rebound performance against Bridgeport. 

“One of the things that we tried doing from the start, and she’s 

continued to benefit from, was to teach all of our players to have 

a multi-faceted skill set,” Keller said. “Lexi has really developed the 

total package for a girl her age.” 

In her latest game, Frankenmuth’s first loss, against DeWitt, Boyke 

scored a career-high 26 points in addition to grabbing five rebounds 

and dishing out five assists. 

“In addition to her skills, she has a really nice understanding of the 

game and anticipates plays very well for a freshman,” Keller said. 

“It is easy to see why there are already colleges interested in her. 

Despite all of the accolades, she’s a really humble, down-to-earth 

kid. She just loves to play and hates to lose - a coach loves to see 

that type of competitiveness and willingness to do whatever it takes 

to help the team.”

EVAN SMAGLINSKI IS A FORCE TO BE RECKONED 

WITH ON THE FIELD AND ON THE COURT. 

Smaglinski, a senior at Harbor Beach, helped guide the football team 

this past fall as a 6’6” offense and defensive lineman. 

This season, the Pirates won the Greater Thumb East Conference 

title for the second straight season, finishing the regular season 9-0, 

thanks in large part to Smaglinski, who provided running lanes for 

the likes of Devin Pfaff (623 yards on 88 carries, 12 touchdowns) and 

Michael Anderson (62 carries, 504 yards, 11 touchdowns), while also 

providing a clean pocket for junior quarterback Dylan Kadar (52-of-78, 

853 yards, 11 touchdowns, zero interceptions). 

The Harbor Beach offense averaged nearly 37 points per game, 

finishing with 405 points in 11 games. 

For his efforts, Smaglinski was named the Thumb Sportswriters 

Association Offensive Lineman of the Year. 

In addition to that accolade, Smaglinski was also named first team 

offensive tackle and first team defensive end in the Greater Thumb 

East, and also earned Division 7-8 all-state honorable mention honors 

as a lineman. 

Smaglinski is also a key contributor to the boys basketball team at 

Harbor Beach, and last month, helped push the Pirates to a 3-1 start. 

He has scored in double figures in all four games for the Pirates, 

including 16 against Reese, 15 against Marlette, 12 against Vassar and 

11 against Unionville-Sebewaing Area. 

In the 55-53 victory over Reese, Smaglinski scored nine points in 

the second half, including seven in the fourth quarter, to hand the 

Rockets their first loss of the season. 

Smaglinski is also a member of the baseball team at Harbor Beach, 

earning all-conference honorable mention honors as an infielder last 

season.
