Visual artAdnan also works as a painter, herearliest abstract works werecreated using a palette knife toapply oil paint onto the canvas –often directly from the tube – infirm swipes across the picture'ssurface. The focus of thecompositions often being a redsquare, she remains interested inthe "immediate beauty ofcolour".In 2012, a series of theartist's brightly colored abstractpaintings were exhibited as a partof documenta 13 in Kassel,Germany.In the 1960s, she beganintegrating Arabic calligraphy intoher artworks and her books, suchas Livres d’Artistes . She recallssitting for hours copying wordsfrom an Arabic grammar withouttrying to understand the meaningof the words. Her art is very muchinfluenced by early hurufiyyaartists including; Iraqi artist, JawadSalim, Palestinian writer and artist,Jabra Ibrahim Jabra and Iraqipainter Shakir Hassan al Said, whorejected Western aesthetics andembraced a new art form whichwas both modern and yetreferencedtraditional culture, media andtechniques.Inspired by Japanese leporellos,Adnan also paints landscapes on tofoldable screens that can be"extended in space like freestandingdrawings".In 2014, a collection of the artist'spaintings and tapestries wereexhibited as a part of the WhitneyBiennial at the Whitney Museum ofAmerican Art.Adnan's retrospective at Mathaf:Arab Museum of Modern Art inDoha, titled "Etel Adnan In All HerDimensions" and curated by HansUlrich Obrist, featured elevendimensions of Adnan's practice. Itincluded her early works, herliterature, her carpets, and other.The show was launched in March2014, accompanied by a 580-pagecatalog of her work publishedjointly by Mathaf and Skira. Thecatalog was designed by artist AlaYounis in Arabic and English, andincluded text contributions bySimone Fattal, Daniel Birnbaum,Kaelen Wilson-Goldie, as well as sixinterviews with Hans-Ulrich Obrist.
In 2017, Adnan's work wasincluded in "Making Space:Women Artists and PostwarAbstraction," a group exhibitionorganized by MoMA, whichbrought together prominentartists including Ruth Asawa,Gertrudes Altschul, Anni Albers,Magdalena Abakanowicz, LygiaClark, and Lygia Pape, amongothers.In 2018, MASS MoCA hosted aretrospective of the artist, titled"A yellow sun A green sun ayellow sun A red sun a blue sun",including a selection of paintingsin oil and ink, as well as a readingroom of her written works.Theexhibition explored how theexperience of reading poetrydiffers from the experience oflooking at a painting.the artist's work as a shaman andactivist.Awards and recognition1977: Awarded the France-PaysArabes award for her novel SittMarie Rose.2010: Awarded the Arab AmericanBook Awards for Master of theEclipse.2013: Her poetry collection Sea andFog won the California Book Awardfor Poetry.2013: Awarded the Lambda LiteraryAward.2014: Named a Chevalier des Artset des Lettres by the FrenchGovernment.Adnan also has a RAWI LifetimeAchievement Award from theRadius of Arab-American Writers.Published in 2018, "Etel Adnan", abiography of the artist written byKaelen Wilson-Goldie, inquires into
