Nabil Nahas born 18 September1949 in Beirut, Lebanonis a Lebanese artist and painterliving in New York.BiographyNabil grew up in Cairo and Beirut,before moving to the United Statesfor college to study at LouisianaState University. He is the youngerbrother of the Lebanese/Brazilianbusinessman Naji Nahas.He earned a BFA in 1971 and anMFA from Yale University in 1973.Encounters with contemporarypainters at Yale influencedNahas to move to New York aftergraduationPainting careerHe exhibited regularly at importantNew York galleries and receivedcritical acclaim for his work. Usuallyworking "in" an abstract idiom,Nahas repeatedly reinventedhimself.Nahas’ paintings have made use ofgeometric motifs and decorativepatterns inspired Levantine artarchitecture. Nahas also employstraditional Western abstractpainting, pointillistic andimpressionistic techniques.Sometimes he combines thesetraditions in brightly coloredpaintings, suggestive of therichness of nature and of theimagination. One of Nahas’ motifsis starfish, sometimes cast in acrylicpaint, on top of which he layeredhigh-chroma acrylic paint.In his most recent work, Nahasintroduced recognizable Lebanesecedar, pine and olive trees in hismost direct references yet to hisnative land. In 2018, Nahas wascommissioned to produce a cedarpainting to be featured on a newstamp in Lebanon.
