Important information like what the judges are looking for in The Crossing Fashion Starts Here Best Dressed Competition and stuff about the racing as well, like pointers on how to pick a winner. And thanks to Callam Mitchell and his team at Team Event, Addington Cup Week is just the start of party season. We talk to the promoter putting the icing on Christchurch’s cake this summer. We live to serve here at Cityscape, and so we have served up a curated Christmas gift guide brimming with ideas fresh and failsafe. Nailing that pressy list is the best reason possible for heading to the central city and exploring its retail hotspots, followed by a drink and some nibbles, of course. And if 2020 is looking like the year to put a ring on it, check out our feature on the amazingly creative community of jewellers we have in this city. As always, we also bring you what’s hot in cuisine, events, home and couture.

COMMUNITY

MEET THE LOCAL

Rust never sleeps and neither it

seems does ‘rust artist’ Don

Service, who has added gallery

owner to his impressive CV. He

tells Cityscape how RightSide

Gallery came to be, how his own

art has evolved, and how he

relaxes when he finds the time.

You are something of a jack-ofall-trades

in the art world – how

did that come about? I get asked

to do lots of different things – art

hanging, art repairs and art

technician jobs – that come in

through word of mouth so I usually

say yes then figure it out from

there. I have a varied background

career-wise, which gives me the

confidence to say yes, but art and

design has always been my passion.

Tell us about your new gallery and

the artists represented? I have

wanted a workshop and showroom

for years, it just took a while to bring

it all together. I met the artists at

various shows around the country,

became friends and mentioned I

was opening a gallery and asked

them if they wanted to be involved.

Luckily they all said yes.

‘I LOVE TAKING THE

BOAT OUT TO THE

WAIMAKARIRI OR

RAKAIA RIVERS

WITH FRIENDS’

In your own art you work with rust

– what drew you to that? I love the

colours and textures in rust and the

versatility of steel. I started playing

around with them, people liked the

results, so I submitted some photos

to the first Christchurch Art Show.

It has all just grown from there.

Rust never sleeps – that must

mean your works change over

time? Yes they do change, which I

think is cool, but I coat them with

lacquers or resins, which slows the

rusting process down a lot. I don't

want to sell something that quickly

turns to a pile of dust on the floor,

that would be awkward.

What do you think Christchurch

needs the most? More

entertaining, exciting and fun

things to do. More live music. Tell

us a secret about yourself? I'm a

shit guitar player. What’s your

favourite material possession? My

1971 Hamilton Jet 32, which I rebuilt

a few years ago. I love getting it out

on our rivers and lakes with friends

and family. What are you listening

to/reading/bingewatching at the

moment? Listening to Gary Clark

Jr or Queens of the Stone Age;

reading Adrian Newey, How to

Build a Car; bingewatching

Justified or The Grand Tour.

What’s your favourite movie? Too

many to name but I love a good

war movie – Saving Private Ryan

etc. I’m not so much into romcoms.

Anything coming to

Christchurch that you are

particularly looking forward

to? I always enjoy the SCOPE

Classic at Ruapuna every

summer. How do you relax?

I love taking the boat out to the

Waimakariri or Rakaia rivers with

friends, park up wth a beer and try

and catch a fish – beautiful,

exciting and relaxing. We are very

lucky! Also making things. What’s

the best piece of advice you’ve

been given? It's not what happens

to you, it's what you do about it.

Don't wait, just start – so get off

your arse and make it happen. If

you weren’t doing what you are

now, what would you want to do?

Racing driver, or drummer in a

huge rock band. Unfortunately I’m

not good enough for either but I

can dream about it.

The aim is to work in a

team to uncover clues,

crack codes, solve

puzzles and complete

your mission, which

is to get out.

ESCAPING REALITY

Find the clues, solve the puzzle

and escape! That’s what the

good folks at CodeBreakers live

for and they filled Cityscape in

on some of the adventures to be

had at their two locations.

Y

ou’re stuck in a room with your

friends and the clock is ticking on

your escape – the team at

CodeBreakers are masters at setting up

quirky, challenging and entertaining

scenarios for you to break out of. These guys

recently had a makeover and changed their

name from Crate Escape to CodeBreakers

and with the new name comes a whole raft

of new escape adventures! An escape room

is just that, with a tricky scenario thrown in

for good measure. The aim is to work in a

team to uncover clues, crack codes, solve

puzzles and complete your mission, which is

to get out – all within 60 minutes. Sounds

fun, right? You’ll discover various themes at

each location – you can find the hidden

treasure in the Lost Hut of Antarctica,

become a real-life James Bond in Operation

Mindfall, steal the Mona Lisa in Art Heist, fix a

suspicious supercomputer in Into The Dark,

or stop a maniacal time traveller in The

Misadventures of Max Magnus. You’ll need to

use your wits and follow the clues to find a

way to freedom. Our hot tip is to crank that

handle, plug in that cable and take a closer

look at that map on the wall – literally

everywhere you look is a potential clue to

solve the riddle and move on to the next

before getting out. There are loads of

different clues and puzzles in each of the

themed rooms, with some digital puzzles for

the tech head, tactile puzzles for the hands

on, and cryptic puzzles for the math whizzes

out there. To be crowned victorious, you’ll

have to work together and keep your

thinking cap on to get out of the room, all

while having a bit of a laugh. So, if you’re

looking for something a little out-of-the-box

to do with friends, families, your partner or as

a team-building exercise, you needn’t look

any further than CodeBreakers. Check them

out at 166 St Asaph Street or 492 Colombo

Street. They can accommodate groups of

two to 60 at a time, too!

JUSTIN MACLAREN,

AUTOMATIC 80s

Synth pop tribute band

Automatic 80s will keep

the vibe going in The

Edge Public Village. We

talk to vocalist Justin

Maclaren.

You’re obviously all big fans of

‘80s music – what’s the

attraction? This is the music of our

youth so it therefore holds

significant nostalgic importance for

us personally. Secondly, this is the

decade when many musicians

departed from guitar-driven music

and started experimenting with

synthesizers, many with a lack of

knowledge of how to play

keyboards. This produced an era

punctuated with huge pop hits

featuring simple but memorable

synth riffs that we find very

enjoyable to play, and audiences

love to dance and sing along to

these ‘80s anthems. You recreate

that whole time with your lighting

and backdrops – what’s the trick

there? Throughout the history of

this band, which originally formed

in Christchurch in 1985 as Amez

Amez, we have always maintained

a high production level including

costuming, in the belief that this is

not simply a covers band going

about their business but rather a

show. The way the performance

looks is every bit as important as

the musicianship in contributing to

the success we have experienced.

Any of the new wave of synth pop

bands that you really like? Yes

– Friendly Fires, Mesh, Wolfsheim,

Ladytron and MGMT, although

these would be considered

underground. Not really a fan of

the current wave of commercial

pop. Any new Kiwi artists that

have caught your attention? The

Naked and Famous. Tell us about

your first gig together? The

original lineup of this band used to

drive around Ōtautahi Christchurch

during the mid 1980s looking for

parties. We would have all the band

gear in a van and just set up and

play, uninvited. Sometimes to a

great reception, on other occasions

not so much. It was always fun

though. Do you have a pre- and/or

post-show ritual? We usually have

a little singalong out the back,

jump around in order to warm up

physically, and wish each other the

best for the performance. This

includes the production team and

management, who are of course a

critical part of what we do as a

team and what we have achieved.

Who are your musical heroes?

Depeche Mode, Muse, Fleetwood

Mac, The Comsat Angels, Talk Talk,

INXS, OMD, The Fixx. Outside of

the Automatic 80s you have your

own musical careers – what’s

been going on for each of you

there? Automatic 80s bassist Clint

Harris is part of The Feelers’ lineup

and a member of Opshop. He

continues to perform with both

these bands and has a summer

tour coming up with The Feelers.

Opshop will be supporting John

Farnham in late November, which

Clint is very excited about.

Automatic 80s drummer Jayden

Lee is part of Auckland’s successful

indie band Alae, who have recently

signed a deal with LA record label

Anti-Gravity Records. Automatic

80s vocalists and songwriters Pearl

Runga and Justin Maclaren, along

with Auckland musician and

composer Simon Finnel, will

perform for the first time as The

Broken. Automatic 80s guitarist

Ryan Wood is a sought-after

session player and continually

performs as guitarist and bassist

with a variety of bands around

Auckland’s busy venues.

HOW TO PICK A WINNER 1. Look for a horse that seems fit and alert, with good muscle tone and that’s walking in a

calm and purposeful manner – it should look like it’s on a mission! 2. Favourites win about a third of the time so it follows that they’re

probably the safest bet – but at low-paying odds. 3. Check in your race book for a horse’s record. Look at how it has done in similar

track conditions and at similar distances to its upcoming race. Some horses have a past record of winning at long odds – it could be

worth a bet. 4. Backing a winning driver throughout a meeting can pay dividends. 5. Remember that no-one wins all the time – that’s

part of the fun. If all else fails, pick the name you like the most!

TROTTING INTO ACTION

VINCE HARDER Kiwi R&B-pop artist

Vince Harder will be breaking out the hits on the

Lindauer Lawn between races.

What you have been up to

recently? I have just got back from

touring with Guy Sebastian on his

sold-out Australian tour. Any plans

to return to the recording studio

soon? I’m always in the studio! But

I’m definitely working on another

single release, if not before the end

of the year then early next. What’s

on the cards for 2020? It’s looking

pretty good so far. I’m planning on

writing and releasing more original

music and also focusing on more

live performances throughout New

Zealand and Australia. Tell us

about your first gig? I think my

first ever proper gig was at the

music festival Parachute. I formed

my own band with a really lame

name and started writing and

performing originals. I had just

finished up at EXCEL School of

Performing Arts. What’s one thing

people probably don’t know

about you? I’m a little obsessed

with watching funny stuff on

YouTube, especially Stephen

Colbert and Trevor Noah. What’s

your favourite way to spend a

Sunday afternoon? On the couch

watching movies with my family

and ordering Uber Eats. Any new

Kiwi artists that have caught

your attention? Yeah, there’s

heaps. I like JessB, she’s

dope. What album/song do

you have on high rotation

at the moment? I’ve just

started rediscovering The Beatles

Abbey Road remastered album

and appreciating how epic they

were as songwriters and musicians!

Do you have a pre- and/or

post-show ritual? Yeah, pre-show

you will always find me warming

my voice up and doing one or two

minutes of conscious breathing,

and lately I’ve been having hot

water and honey. Before I go on

stage I usually also call my wife if

she’s not there. Who are your

musical heroes? Of course MJ

(Michael Jackson), Stevie Wonder,

Donny Hathaway, the Bee Gees

and Usher to name a few. Any

plans for while you’re in

Christchurch? Yeah, I’ll probably

catch up with some friends and hit

up Hello Sunday café for some

good eats.

FASHION

FINESSE

The racing will be thrilling on Christchurch Casino

NZ Trotting Cup Day but for many of those in

attendance the real contest will be the trackside

fashion stakes, The Crossing Fashion Starts Here

Best Dressed Competition. Hand on heart that’s

probably true for us here in the Cityscape office! It’s not

too late to organise your outfit and you can enter up till

noon on the day. To get started on your winning style,

head to The Crossing and its great range of fashion

outlets from international flagship stores such as H&M,

Country Road and SEED alongside top New Zealand

designers Barkers, IVYBLU, Workshop and RUBY.

Madisons Off Broadway offer a stunning range of

special-occasion wear, with brands such as Calvin Klein,

Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren. To give you the inside

running, we check in with judges Deanna Didovich,

designer with RUBY; Shelley Ferguson, editorial director

of home and fashion magazines at Bauer Media; and

head judge Jackie O’Fee, owner of Signature Style, to

see what they are looking for in a winner. Heats and

semi-finals of The Crossing Fashion Starts Here Best

Dressed Competition will be held in The Edge Public

Village To enter online and to download the judging

guidelines, head to addington.co.nz

SHELLEY FERGUSON

Shelley Ferguson is

editorial director of home

and fashion magazines at

Bauer Media.

What’s the golden rule of race

day fashion? Look fabulous, feel

amazing, be comfortable! What

will you be looking for on the

day? I’d love to see modern formal

looks, defined silhouettes and

some bold colour. I also love classy

headwear so I’ll be looking for

statement pieces that cleverly

complement the rest of the look.

How important is it to work a

theme? So important! Having an

overall theme and approach means

your entire outfit is cohesive and

considered. If you shop for

individual pieces you love, they

may not all work together. Finding

a common element from the start

– whether it be a theme, colour or

shape – makes it easier to shop and

creates an outfit with serious wow

factor. What advice do you have

for contestants? Let your lovely

personalities shine through! Have

fun, be positive, dial up those

smiles and have a blast. What’s the

most common fashion faux pas?

Too many OTT fussy details all

worn together. Sequins, feathers

and patterns are fun but can look

overwhelming when all worn at the

same time. Oh, and women in heels

they can’t actually walk in! It’s a

38 CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Christmas 19

TROTTING INTO ACTION

JACKIE O’FEE

Jackie O’Fee is the owner

of Signature Style.

What’s the golden rule of race

day fashion? Just look gorgeous

and have fun! What will you be

looking for on the day? Attention

to detail, and that’s every detail

from the top of your head to the

sole of your shoe – it gets so hard

to pick a winner that one year we

really did eliminate one of the

finalists due to her shoe being

broken! I’ll also be looking to see

on-trend looks – as an example,

this year I’m expecting we’ll see a

lot of statement sleeves, and I love

colour! How important is it to

work a theme? It’s important that

long day so comfortable shoes are

a must. What’s the best way to get

the judges’ attention? Be yourself,

be proud of how you look and own

it. A woman’s natural confidence is

the ultimate accessory to a great

outfit. How do you nail selecting a

hat or fascinator? Seeing

‘Dresscode: Fascinators required’

on an event invite can be slightly

terrifying! But Cup Day is the

perfect occasion to experiment and

a well-chosen headpiece can

completely elevate an outfit. And

remember, a headpiece can be a

band, bow, clip, hat or fascinator, so

there are plenty of practical

options that don’t look like feather

dusters. It can help to consider

your face shape – if you have an

oval-shaped face then a headpiece

your overall look is cohesive, so if

you are going for a Dior silhouette

you need to make sure everything

works with it, while if you are

opting for something modern, like

a jumpsuit, everything has to fit

that look also. What advice do you

have for contestants? Make sure

you’ve sorted every element of

your outfit and then on the day,

relax and be yourself. This is one of

the best ‘dressing up’ things you

can ever do, so you want to make

sure you really enjoy it. What’s the

most common fashion faux pas?

The wrong shoe or forgetting to

style your hair. What’s the best

way to get the judges’ attention?

Look amazing! Honestly, every year

we are blown away by the incredible

standard of the outfits. You truly

need to look fabulous. How do you

nail selecting a hat or fascinator?

Make sure you do your research –

take a look at racewear winners

internationally, particularly Australia

as the seasons are the same, and

see what is trending. Also, ask your

milliner for advice – they work in

this world all the time. What are

you hoping not to see? Too much

flesh or cocktail wear. Race day

fashion isn’t party fashion.

with more width is a great choice.

Usually I choose my dress first as

it’s the key part of my look, then I

find a headpiece with one unifying

feature, like shape. I like classic, chic

and contemporary shapes and

colour palettes – so nothing too

detailed, garish or sparkly. Finally,

think about your hairstyle – if you

have a big, bold piece then a sleek

chignon will work well, whereas a

banded style is best with big

bouncy curls. If you get confused,

always think back to your personal

style and what naturally ‘fits’ you.

What are you hoping not to see?

People dressing too casually!

Christchurch Casino NZ Trotting Cup

Day is steeped in tradition so I think

it’s important to respect that and

make an effort to be suitably attired.

DEANNA DIDOVICH

Deanna Didovich is

creative director at RUBY.

What’s the golden rule of race

day fashion? The bolder the better!

What will you be looking for on

the day? I’ll be looking out for

someone whose personality shines

through the outfit they have put

together. I am sure there will be

some beautiful fashion on display,

but for me it will be all about not

just putting on the trendiest dress

but considered styling, unique

accessories and a great colour

palette. How important is it to

work a theme? Anything goes! A

theme isn’t necessarily important;

you should work to what you feel

most confident in. What advice do

you have for contestants? Don’t

worry about what anyone else is

wearing! Just have fun. What’s the

most common fashion faux pas?

Wearing something you don’t feel

comfortable in – you want to enjoy

the day and feel your best. What’s

the best way to get the judges’

attention? Confidence is key. How

do you nail selecting a hat or

fascinator? You can definitely be

more creative in this area, using

hair accessories as another option.

We have a range of hair clips and

headbands that could be the

perfect finishing touch to a look –

whether this is pairing the RUBY

Dionne Headband with your outfit,

or the RUBY Prince Clips with a

sleek ponytail.

time! Be sure to head up, too,

where you can quench your thirst

and soak in some sunshine as you

LUMIÈRE

Think The Great Gatsby meets

boutique luxury cinema and that’s

what you’ll find at the state-of-theart

Lumière, set in the stunning

gentle nods to the past, such as the

two theatres named after screen

legends Brigitte Bardot and Sarah

Bernhardt. The Art Deco bar is the

star of the complex and the perfect

place to enjoy a pre-movie drink –

Bijou, which is French for ‘little

gem’, offers pure decadence and

sophistication. You can soak in the

atmosphere as you relax in the

emerald velvet chairs and sip on a

signature cocktail, craft beer or

wine. When it comes time for your

but Ballantynes have reopened

their Lichfield Street entrance and

the stunning spot will have you

wowing with excitement. The new

homewares department boasts

exclusive concept store Pottery

Barn, the first New Zealand store

for the iconic US chain, which will

up the ante for design gurus

around town. You’ll be stoked to

indulge in a cheeky rosé or two.

THE CROSSING

At The Crossing you’ll discover a

shopping mecca full of swag that

offers a wonderful web of wicked

finds. Hidden laneways and stylish

air bridges dominate this style

maven’s heaven and you’re sure to

you’re after, you won’t be

disappointed with killer stores

Witchery, Country Road, Sunglass

Hut and Barkers. If you’re on the

lookout for a little something for

someone special, The Gift Shop is

the go-to and have some beautiful

treasures including clothes, soaps,

RIDING IN STYLE What better way to explore the hotspots of our resurgent

city than in a zippy and oh-so-styley BMW 1 Series. Cityscape took to the streets in the

latest model one afternoon, courtesy of Christchurch BMW, and found city traffic a lot

easier to cope with when cossetted in leather luxury and that inimitable new-car aroma.

The suspension smoothed out those rough road surfaces we still come across occasionally,

and keeping within that 30 kph inner-city speed limit was a lot easier with the heads-up

display. Lots of room in the back for those bags of shopping as well. Know what was extra

cool? You could search for an address by writing with your finger on the top of the

navigation touch pad – get the first few letters out and ‘search’ will do the rest. Now that’s a

step up from fumbling with a keyboard! chchbmw.co.nz

RIVERSIDE MARKET

BOHEMIAN BAKERY

RIVERSIDE RHYTHMS

On one of your visits to the new Riverside

Market, you may have noticed some funky

tunes coming out of a banging sound

system – if not, be sure to listen out next

time you pop in. You can thank Harvey

Norman Commercial’s Craig Shaw

(pictured) for this multi-zoned audio

system, which sounds fabulous! Opening

day featured Dr Sanchez playing live

flamenco guitar pumped out of the system

and by all accounts it sounded great. The

setup was a big job, taking the team

around four weeks to pull together, but it

was certainly worth it. The beats coming

out of the system are courtesy of Shawsy

too – these were created under Shaw

Consulting and provide a real vibe

throughout the market. Different music

plays throughout the day – in the mornings

you’ll find a more chilled acoustic vocal

sound, while later in the day the tempo

picks up. The top-notch music and sound

system make for a great atmosphere both

inside and out, and really gives the space

some soul. Keep an ear out next time

you’re at Riverside and feel free to sing

along. Talk to Craig Shaw on 03 363 5910.

candles, skincare and ceramics –

some are locally handmade and

others are from all around the

world. Don’t forget to treat yourself

to something, too! Pick up a coffee

from the team at Coffee Culture,

and if you’re feeling a bit peckish,

Cookai Japanese Restaurant serve

up some of the best eats in town

– they have a sushi train with more

than 80 options plus a menu to

choose from, so there’s something

for everyone! The swanky shopping

hub has a too-cool-for-school

aesthetic and is a fab spot to get

those gram-worthy pics, too. Park

in The Crossing car park and your

first two hours are just $2.

DINING LANES

The city is bursting with so many

delicious dining choices, but where

do you go when you can’t decide

what to eat, or there’s conflicting

opinions on where to go? Don’t

battle it out and end up hangry, just

head to one of the many dining

hotspots – all of them are unique in

their own right and offer a little

something for everyone. Eats on

Oxford is the city’s newest dining

lane and will have your mouth

watering as you walk through the

door. Situated on the beautiful

Avon River, you can grab

takeaways and enjoy the view or

chow down in the chilled

atmosphere. Eats has got you

covered from Malaysian to Mexican

and everything in between. EntX is

conveniently located in the middle

of town and offers some diverse

eateries. The space is huge and has

a little of everything, with sweet,

savoury, hot and cold dishes served

up from more than 12 stalls. The

Yard is a super-styly hospitality

hotspot that shares its space with

offices and retail spaces. It’s in the

SALT District, so you know the food

on offer will deliver the goods.

There’s French crêpes, Korean

pancakes and Otto Delicatessen, a

hole-in-the-wall sandwich bar, to

choose from among many others.

Speaking of the SALT District, be

sure to check out Little High, which

is in the heart of it. Always full of

hustle and bustle, the eight eateries

here will satisfy your hunger and

leave you wanting more. So there

you have it – all your food

problems, solved!

THE WELDER

This space in the centre of the city

is leading the way by offering

shoppers a mix of artisan retail,

hospitality and wellbeing

businesses. They’re taking

wellbeing to the next level by

expanding further than just healthy

eating, with physical wellbeing,

mindfulness and sociability all

accounted for. Situated on the

funky and bustling Welles Street,

The Welder’s ethos is an inspiring

one – wanting to make people’s

lives better by producing healthy

products and services, and creating

enjoyable and memorable

experiences. In the ever-so-trendy

building (which was created from

six buildings dating as far back as

1880), discover some of the best

baked goodies you’ll ever try at

Grizzly Baked Goods, get your zen

on with some yoga and meditation

at O-Studios, ditch your plastic and

fill your pantry at GoodFor, or try

some tender, traditional Wagyu

beef at Bar Yoku.

CHILDCARE

With businesses heading back to

the inner city and the hustle and

bustle building around town,

there’s a growing need for

childcare facilities. Heeding the call,

Millie’s House Early Learning

Centre has given a new lease of life

to an old courthouse building right

in the heart of the city. The early

learning centre, which influences

the children to be artistic and

inquisitive, boasts eight play areas

and two large communal areas

packed full of activities. Situated in

the ever-so-swanky The Crossing,

you will find The Crossing

Preschool. They have some of the

best views in town, with a

360-degree outlook on the city,

and have everything covered with

low teacher-to-child ratios and

quizzical learning. Grow Active

Daycare is on the south side of

town and is located on the hip and

happening Welles Street. They

have a focus on sustainability and

active early learners. The

environment they have created

fosters curiosity and creativity.

These are just a few of the childcare

centres that are going up within the

Four Avenues, which is exciting for

the city and parents alike.

DOTTING AROUND

There’s so many cool stores

popping up around town. If you go

for a meander, High Street is the

one to wander down. This busy

street will take you where you want

to be – from award-winning

sourdough and sweet and savoury

pastries at Bohemian Bakery to

chic, intimate wine bar Not Without

You. If fashion is your passion,

Infinite Definite will take care of

you and have you looking très chic!

Head just west of High Street and

you’ll find premium menswear

store Cutler & Co and on-trend

fashionistas Hunters and

Collectors. Just a short stroll and

you’ll end up in Nutron where you

can release your inner tech head –

these guys have you covered with

home automation, e-scooters and

audio, plus they’re an authorised

Apple reseller and service provider.

Getting hungry? Head to New

Regent Street and check out the

exquisite culinary fare at Story,

which blends Indian flavours and

local ingredients. For breakfast

and lunch with a bit of a twist, head

to Miro. If you’re looking for a little

fun, pop to St Asaph Street, just

south-west of High Street, where

you can have a laugh with the team

at CodeBreakers – these guys are

the masters of escape rooms and

will have you immersed in a world

‘THE BEST EXPERIENCE

AT ANY EVENT IS ALWAYS SEEING THE

CROWDS HAVING AN AMAZING TIME’

44 CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Christmas 19

THE

CROWD

WHISPERER

Callam Mitchell heads Team Event, the

promoter putting the icing on Christchurch’s

cake this summer with a killer lineup of

festivals and events. He tells Cityscape about

his first event – a high school after-party when

he was 16 – and why he loves what he does.

T

ell us what Team Event has in store

for Christchurch this festival season?

We have our biggest summer coming

up, with five festivals locked in and a number

of headline shows. We’re kicking off with the

South Island Wine & Food Festival on

December 7. We then have the Great Kiwi

Beer Festival in January, Nostalgia Festival

and Electric Avenue in February, and the first

North Island edition of the Great Kiwi Beer

Festival in Hamilton in March. We are also

involved with the Summer’s Day Disco

concert in Hagley Park in January, and we

have one or two more announcements yet

to come. What are you most looking

forward to? We look forward to delivering

every event equally – you can’t help that with

the energy that is generated as we build

towards each festival date. We are especially

excited though about our new festivals,

Nostalgia and the Great Kiwi Beer Festival in

Hamilton – that will be our first North Island

festival. We’re also making some

enhancements to Electric Avenue with a

much larger site and capacity, which gives us

more creativity in the visual aspects and

installations. It’s been an exciting year for

Team Event – what have been the

highlights? The down season is a great time

of year for us to plan for growth, and we

often use this time to design new events.

Some of these concepts don’t make it off the

planning table, but this year we’re fortunate

to have two new ones come to fruition so far.

What attracted you to Nostalgia? Nostalgia

has a very good reputation, a great ethos,

and has had consistent growth each year

since its inception. It’s held in such a unique

venue and this point of difference makes it

very hard to replicate anywhere else. Will

you be breaking out the polyester and

platforms for A Summer’s Day Disco? I’ll

definitely be getting into the theme of the

event, and have a couple of great 70s-style

45 CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Christmas 19

THE CROWD WHISPERER

pieces I had made in Vietnam while on

holiday there last year that don’t see the light

of day too often! We’re definitely encouraging

people to get into the theme of the event.

This year you are taking the Great Kiwi

Beer Festival to Hamilton – what are the

logistical challenges there? Obviously not

being on the ground is a bit different for us,

but Claudelands Events Centre is a fantastic

venue with great support staff, which makes

our job easier. A purpose-built venue also

doesn’t have the same logistical challenges

as staging a festival in Hagley Park. Our team

will spend about a week in Hamilton in the

lead-up to the festival and we have support

from people within the industry up there as

well. How do you choose the entertainment

lineup of each festival? It differs from show

to show. The Great Kiwi Beer Festival and

Wine & Food Festival for example have a mix

of newer artists as well as a strong heritage

act such as Dave Dobbyn or Dragon. With

Electric Avenue, 50 percent of our audience

is aged under 25, so the lineup is reflective of

this. We look at artists’ touring histories,

Spotify statistics, and a number of other

tools to gauge their popularity in our market.

We also like to throw a couple of really

unique acts into Electric Avenue each year

that are often quite unknown to our

audience. It’s these acts that can really

surprise a crowd and create those special

‘wow’ moments that leave a lasting

impression. Parov Stelar I think will be a real

standout at Electric Avenue next year –

we’ve been trying to secure them for five

years now. What’s the key to securing such

great talent for your festivals and events?

Building relationships with other festivals has

been key for the growth of Electric Avenue.

Working with other festivals and promoters

both in New Zealand and Australia enables

us to make strong offers to international

artists for a whole Australasian tour, which

would be very difficult to do on our own.

With so many amazing beer, wine and food

offerings throughout New Zealand, how do

you go about selecting what to showcase in

the Great Kiwi Beer Festival and South

Island Wine & Food Festival? We’ve got a

few wineries and breweries who come to the

festivals every year and people really like to

check in with their tried and tested

favourites, but we also like to find some new

brands and products to keep the festivals

fresh. Fortunately the whole team are

enthusiastic about great wine and craft beer,

so you could say that we’re committed to

research all year round! You’re known as

‘the crowd whisperer’ for your ability to

accurately predict how people will flow

through a festival or event space – how do

you do that? Is it all down to experience or

is there some instinct involved as well?

Haha, that’s the first time I’ve heard that

term! It’s probably a mixture of experience as

Left: Electric

Avenue. Right:

Nostalgia Festival.

46 CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Christmas 19

THE CROWD WHISPERER

ENVIRONMENT TO CREATE LITTLE

NOOKS AND CRANNIES ...

IT CREATES AN ENVIRONMENT

OF DISCOVERY.

Above: Great Kiwi

Beer Festival.

well as being able to visualise a site and how

the crowd will flow. We also like to use the

environment to create little nooks and

crannies – especially with Electric Avenue, as

it creates an environment of discovery. We

also measure crowd flow rates, so there’s

some mathematical calculations involved as

well. We have a skilled team who have been

involved with these festivals since very early

on who all play a part in this, and the crowd

experience is always at the forefront of our

planning. How soon do you need to start

planning for an event to be a success?

What’s the timeline? The timelines are

always different. For existing festivals, our

planning starts as soon as one finishes,

whereas for new events the planning can be

years. We have been looking at taking the

Great Kiwi Beer Festival to the North Island

for about five years but only a few months

ago settled on a city and venue, which is

Claudelands Event Centre in Hamilton. From

there we’ve allowed six months to promote

and deliver the event. With planning an

event, what keeps you awake at night?

What do you have the least control over?

Securing lineups is always a difficult exercise,

particularly for Electric Avenue. New

Zealand’s isolated location makes it

expensive to bring artists out and requires a

long lead-in time for artists as it often

requires shows throughout Australasia to

make travelling this far viable. As most of our

events are outdoors, we have the least

control over the weather, but event

management is all about risk mitigation, and

we are well insured for those worst-case

scenarios. How did you get into the

business? I dropped out of university in 1998

to open a nightclub and it sort of stemmed

from there really. We were regularly hosting

touring DJs and staging events there. From

there I promoted a multi-club inner-city

festival in Christchurch called Unity, which

ran twice yearly for a number of years. Over

this period I also owned a record store and

DJ’d for many years, playing at many festivals

and dance parties – so it made sense to keep

the promotion side of things going once I

hung up my headphones. What was your

first event? My first event was a School Cert

after-party at my parents’ house when I was

16. I played high school cricket at the time

and knew we were in for a pretty big turnout

when I heard our opposition team talking

about it that day! Needless to say it got a

little out of control. What mistake have you

learned the most from? I wouldn’t say I’ve

learned the most from any particular

47 CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Christmas 19

THE CROWD WHISPERER

mistake, but I’m constantly making them. If

you’re not making mistakes you’re not doing

anything – I love the challenge of trying to do

new things! Tell us about your best and

worst experience with staging an event.

The best experience at any event is always

seeing the crowds having an amazing time

– creating those experiences for people is

what drives me personally. On the flipside of

that they can be extremely stressful – there is

a huge financial risk, and the weather is

always a challenge. What would be your

ultimate event or festival to organise? And

to attend? Burning Man is definitely high on

my list of festivals to attend. I have friends

that go every year so I’ll tag along with them

on a trip one day soon. I’d love to organise

Boomtown Fair – it always has incredible

lineups with around 30 odd stages, all of

which are themed amazingly. What’s the

best piece of advice you’ve been given?

None that I’ve followed, haha! What’s your

go-to spot in Christchurch? Our office is

near Little High so we’re spoilt for choice.

Welles Street, Espresso 245, Little High and

C1 are my regular spots. What do you think

Christchurch needs the most? People,

people, people – humans are what create a

vibrant city, and we need more people living

in the CBD, more people working in the CBD,

and more people living in Christchurch in

general. A tram linking the university (via the

hospital and Westfield Mall) to the central

city would be amazing and encourage more

students to live in the central city – if

someone could sort that, please. A stadium

and a great mid-size concert venue would

also go a long way to adding much-needed

vibrancy in the inner city. What are you

listening to/reading/bingewatching at

the moment? I’m listening to the new Tool

album, Fear Inoculum – it’s epic. I used to be

a huge fan, and this album made me realise I

still am. I also collect vinyl, so I’m doing my

bit to support New Zealand music by

collecting as many Aotearoa artists on LP as

possible. I’m reading Total Recall, Arnold

Schwarzenegger’s autobiography, and

Chasing The Scream by Johann Hari. As for

bingewatching, that’s Peaky Blinders.

What excites you about Christchurch in the

summer? The energy of the city changes and

really comes alive in summer. BBQs, long

warm days and nights, cricket and lots of

entertainment options – not that I get to

enjoy all of it as we’re too busy organising

festivals, but wouldn’t have it any other way.

You’ve got friends coming from out of

town. Where do you go and what would

you do to show off the city in – two hours:

Pop into the South Island Wine & Food

Festival briefly but be blown away by what’s

on offer and change your travel plans.

A half-day: The ideal amount of time to

spend with a group of mates at the Great

Kiwi Beer Festival. 24 hours: 12 hours at

Electric Avenue followed by a robust

after-party. Where do you go to – Wine and

dine with friends: 5th Street – the food and

service are absolutely impeccable. Morning

coffee: I’ve recently cut back on coffee and

start the day with a licorice tea. Blow off

some steam: Just the usual – a couple of

beers at the pub then let off a flare. Shop up

a storm: Penny Lane Records in Sydenham;

EnCompass in The Tannery; Mitre 10 for a

Sunday DIY session. Get away from it all:

I had an incredible time travelling through

South America earlier this year, which was

my first decent holiday in a long time.

BEST DRESSED CoLab Architecture’s

Tobin Smith and Blair Paterson consider the

relationship between fashion and architecture.

I

nternational movements in

architecture and fashion have

often been influenced by one

another, and both in turn are

heavily influenced by climate,

culture and individual identity. Both

can also illustrate a balance

between necessity and luxury.

Sometimes the confluence

between architecture and fashion

is crystal-clear. Art Deco, for

example, demonstrates a period

when architecture, clothing,

jewellery and furniture were very

much aligned. The downside

though is that with such a strong

and easily identifiable aesthetic,

the timelessness of the architecture

can be subject to a lifespan similar

to the fashion.

As we’ve found our design feet

in New Zealand, we have evolved a

style of architecture that is unique

to our local context and climate,

moving on from outside influences.

Materiality, sustainability and

contextual sensibility take

precedence over simply mimicking

worldwide trends. This considered

architectural language is

translating through our interior

spaces to the textiles and

furnishings being used. Furniture

designers are aligning with this

ethos by creating pieces that

express a quality of thought and

production and celebrate relevant

tones and materials.

The architecture within CoLab

tends to be intentionally simple.

We are drawn to forms that are

strong and rational, free of

unnecessary detail or stylistic

complexity. Our colour palettes

‘Sometimes the

confluence between

architecture and

fashion is crystal-clear’

tend to follow these same basic

principles – black, white and

natural material tones.

These principles translate to the

fixtures and furnishings we are

drawn to. For us, good design

pieces should sit in harmony with

one another, irrespective of age or

style. Quality pieces, like good

architecture, should never date.

Fortunately we have a wealth of

local designers and suppliers that

can aid these selections.

Getting smart

The wave of smart devices has reached

the garden. Canopy Landscape

Architects’ Julie Greenslade and Paul

Roper-Gee look at the benefits.

L

andscapes are going

increasingly high-tech, with a

range of smart gadgets and

digital solutions available to

enhance your outdoor environment.

As we think about the holidays

ahead, here are some ideas for your

summer garden, whether you are

staying at home or heading away.

Smart sprinklers can replace

traditional irrigation controllers.

They use internet-based weather

forecasting to create real-time

watering schedules for your

garden. These will make the most

of the water being used by only

turning on when needed, thus

reducing wastage. They can be set

to run on autopilot or controlled

remotely through smartphone

apps so you can keep an eye on

things while away. The trickery can

be taken even further by combining

with plant sensors that monitor the

soil and air conditions in specific

areas of your garden and send data

to the cloud, where it can be viewed

from any smart digital device.

Smart lights are the next big

thing in exterior lighting, adding

both drama and practicality to

your garden spaces. The Phillips

Hue system is a clever and very

cost-effective smart lighting

system that lets you manage

colour changing, dimming and

switching from your smartphone

at any time and from any place.

Automatic routines can also be

easily programmed for turning

lights on and off.

Combined with wireless sensor

technology, garden lighting can

double as security lighting by

pairing it with movement sensors.

The Hue system can also be used to

control water-feature pumps and

other garden electrical elements.

At Canopy, we regularly work

with Ian Harrop at Modular Lighting

& Partners to develop lighting

solutions for residential and

commercial projects. Modular

Lighting can provide Hue Connect,

the essential component needed to

make the Phillips Hue system work,

together with a broad range of

other exterior light fittings. The

options are endless!

First steps

As well as its plush One Central development in

the inner city, Fletcher Living is developing

350 Colombo, on the site of the old Sydenham

School. These entry-level one- and two-bedroom

homes are ideal for the first-home buyer looking to

get started on the property ladder, and are also

ideal as a long-term investment property. Early

development of the site tended to be around the

interior courtyard but there’s a lot more to see now

that the Colombo Street frontage is taking shape.

This modern three-level building with retail space at

street level and 15 architecturally designed,

two-level, two-bedroom residences above will

complete the transformation of this increasingly

desirable part of the city fringe. The area has more

than its fair share of hospo, entertainment and retail

opportunities, with The Colombo, cinema Academy

Gold, and a host of eateries including Belgian Beer

Café Torenhof, Hello Sunday, The Fermentist and

5th Street within easy walking distance.

CLASSIC REBORN

DRIVE THE LEGEND

Three MINI Coopers

racing through Turin’s

streets, laneways and

culverts, even down

stairs, in the 1969 movie

The Italian Job is one of

cinema’s most iconic

car chases.

The original high-performance

MINI received its name, its raw

power and its limpet-like handling

courtesy of motorsport pioneer

John Cooper. In a salute to the

legend himself, MINI released the

John Cooper Works 3-Door Hatch

and has now expanded the range

to include Clubman and

Countryman (pictured). These

fire-breathers, the brand’s most

powerful model ever approved for

public roads, can go from 0 to 100

kph in about 5 seconds, all the

while sounding fantastic due to the

sport exhaust. ALL4 all-wheel drive

is standard for both cars and makes

for amazing traction, agility and

driving stability. The system was

comprehensively redeveloped for

the new edition of both models.

PROPERTY

First-home buyers are

out in force. Here’s some

tips to help you get ahead

of the crowd.

You need to be ready to act when you see a

property that ticks the boxes for you.

L

ow interest rates and the

traditional spring surge in

listings have brought a flood

of first-home buyers to the

Christchurch real estate market,

meaning while there is plenty of

choice, competition for suitable

properties is running hot.

Kicking things along is Kiwisaver.

Those who have been a member of

a fund for three or more years can

withdraw some of their savings to

put towards buying their first

home. They may also be eligible for

a HomeStart grant of between

$3,000 and $10,000.

If you are looking to get your first

step on the property ladder, you

need to be ready to act when you

see a property that ticks the boxes

for you. Here’s some strategies to

get yourself sorted.

Confirm your finance First things

first, how much money do you have

to spend? Until you have an answer

on that, you can really only look.

Talk to your bank or broker, check

your eligibility for a HomeStart

grant, and line up your lawyer.

Research the market Get along

to some open days in the areas you

are looking to buy in, and make

contact with your preferred real

estate agent. Research and

professional advice will give you a

good idea of what you will likely

have to spend to get what you

want, and a dose of reality may

come in there. That’s OK, just

remember it’s your first home, not

necessarily your forever home.

Understand the process The

main ways to buy a house in New

Zealand are by auction and by

negotiation or fixed price. It’s the

seller who gets to decide on the

sale process so be aware of the

rules and regulations around each

of them. One thing to watch – if

you decide to bid at an auction,

and many including first-home

buyers do, your offer will be

unconditional.

So, that’s my quick snapshot. If

you are looking to make a property

decision, I’m a phone call away.

HEROIC

STATEMENTS

Cityscape turns to the experts to find out what the cutting-edge

trends in menswear are this season.

C

utler & Co’s Colombo Street

store is an emporium of

excellence dedicated to

those men who dare to be a bit

different when it comes to their

wardrobe. There’s a huge range of

styles and fabrics to choose from in

sports jackets, shirts, trousers,

denim and all the trimmings but

what really sets this independent

boutique apart is the expert advice

of store manager Liam Strachan.

Liam works closely with director

John Wright, whose keen eye has

been trained through his many

buying trips to the fashion capitals

of Europe, particularly London,

Florence and Milan. As well as their

own brand, Cutler & Co stock

complementary brands such as

LTB Jeans from Turkey, and

Dstrezzed and No Excess, both

from the Netherlands.

Cityscape checked in with these

masters of style about the trends in

menswear this season, the secret

to a good Cup Week outfit, and

how to rock the no-socks look.

What are the season’s musthaves?

‘Hero’ or statement jackets

– these are the strongest pieces in

men’s fashion right now, sports

jackets in the shorter, Euro fit and

in a bold pattern. Also printed linen

shirts and slim textured and twill

chinos. The micro print linen shirts

are very exciting and perfect with

rolled-up white pants and loafers.

Or you can tone it down with a

stone-coloured chino. Only one

hero per outfit though. Any

must-have accessories? An

embossed, weathered belt and a

pocket handkerchief. Also lapel

pins and cufflinks. It’s about the

points of detail; it’s easy to let the

look down by skipping the detail.

What are the main trends in

menswear? There’s a move away

from the suit to more casual

tailoring – a striking sports jacket

worn with a waistcoat and classic

textured chinos or denim, dressed

up with statement shirts and on

occasion a knit piece. The lux

fashion look is to pair white

sneakers with this combination

– no socks and pants rolled up.

Smart casual is sometimes harder

to co-ordinate than wearing a suit.

We are seeing more people giving

thought to the pieces they are

buying so they can enjoy wearing

the garments with other items that

may already be in their wardrobe.

Shoes can make or break a look.

Have we buried the tie? There’s

still a place for the tie, especially

with a crisp white shirt and blazer,

but it’s more relaxed now. You can

see this in the greater flexibility in

the corporate world, where it’s

become about dressing for the

occasion or the audience. What do

you see as the key to a good Cup

Week outfit? Again, it’s all in the

details, the small touches – it’s all

about getting the presentation

right. We expect to see less

traditional suiting and more

co-ordinated statement blazers

and trousers in the men’s fashion

competitions. It must be a real

buzz when customers pick up on

the advice you give them? Yes, it’s

great to see people responding to

that and leaving looking their best.

A lot come in wanting advice, and

it’s great to see that they are

prepared to ask. They feel they can

trust us to give them the right

advice – it’s more than just making

a sale. Some come in with a fixed

idea of what they want, which can

be more of a challenge, but it’s

good when they respond to some

different options. What’s the

secret to rocking the no-socks

look? Confidence! Choose the right

shoe for what you're wearing. A

trainer or loafer are the easiest to

pull off, or try a brogue or monk

strap for a more dressy look. It’s

party season too – what’s your

advice for a look that can go from

the office to an after-work

function? A sports jacket or blazer

with a knit T-shirt under it, either

merino or linen. Or a collarless shirt.

If you need a collared shirt at work,

a good option is to take a crisp

T-shirt with you and change before

the party. The same with shoes –

take some trainers and swap.

Tell us about your range of fabrics

– where do they come from, and

what guides your selections?

We’re inspired by the beautiful

print fabrics from Italy – they

combine wonderful tones and

creative designs, often in Egyptian

cottons and linens. The knit fabrics

used in the sports jackets make for

a really comfortable garment. Many

of the mills are using sustainable

yarns, organic or recycled cottons,

hemp and linen, with zero

discharge of chemicals. We choose

key items from mills that are aware

of their responsibilities. If you

could give the men of

Christchurch one style or fashion

tip, what would it be? Embrace

the great fashion that is on offer, be

confident, be proud of your style

and enjoy colour.

Bright

shiny

things

Christchurch is home to a

thriving community of jewellers

producing stunning pieces for

every occasion, from engagement

and wedding rings to precious

gifts for very precious people.

The artisan jewellers at three of

the city’s leading practices – Via

Sollertia, The Filing Kabinett and

Sophie Divett Jewellery – tell

Cityscape where they find

inspiration, how they got started

and how hard it can be sometimes

to let a piece go.

SOPHIE DIVETT

JEWELLERY

How would you describe your

jewellery style? Organic,

understated and made to be worn

every day. Where do you find

inspiration? My biggest

inspirations come from nature,

especially our unique native plants

that we have here in New Zealand.

I’m also very inspired by ancient

artefacts – the sense of history, the

surface textures that show the life

they’ve had and become as

important a part of the piece as

the original design. What are you

working on at the moment? I’m

always kept pretty busy with

custom-made pieces but recently

I’ve been working on some new

one-of-a-kind, ready-made

engagement rings for the

upcoming season. I’ve also recently

found some great sources of superethical

diamonds so I’m quite

excited to create some pieces with

them. They’re recycled white

diamonds (no new mining has to

take place for these so they’re

pretty much as environmentally

friendly as you can get) and some

amazing salt-and-pepper

diamonds that are guaranteed

ethically sourced, and support

small communities in Africa.

Commissions or your own

creations – do you have a

preference? I love both – having

total creative freedom with my

own new pieces is pretty great, and

it’s also so lovely working with

clients to create something 100

percent unique. Often the

custom-made process is what

inspires new ideas. How did you

come to be a jeweller? I got my

Bachelor of Fine Arts many years

ago, and towards the end of my

studies one of my tutors suggested

66 CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Christmas 19

BRIGHT SHINY THINGS

I think about getting into jewellery

because of the small sculptural

objects I was making. I started

experimenting after graduating,

and after a while of being

self-taught and doing the

occasional evening class, I decided

that this is what I want to do. So I

did a further two years of study,

refined my technical skills and

completed a Diploma in Jewellery

Design. That was a few years ago,

and I’ve been making jewellery

full-time since then. What’s the

best thing about the job?

Definitely the people – all of my

clients are the loveliest. I love

hearing the stories behind the

pieces people are giving. My

absolute favourite is hearing

proposal stories! It’s so amazing to

think something that I have made

is a part of that. Also, buying gems

– I’m a bit of a magpie and can’t

resist a beautiful sapphire. Any

pieces you are particularly fond

of? I made myself a ring last year,

as a sort of ‘engaged to my

business’ ring. It’s 18 carat yellow

gold and one of my signature bezel

designs, with lots of hand-carved

texture. It took me about eight

months to finally settle on the

stone, which is a 1.8 carat

Queensland sapphire that looks so

different depending on the light it’s

in. I still can’t stop looking at it and

it’s pretty cool to understand what

my customers are feeling when

they say ‘I can’t stop looking at it’!

What was the last piece you made

that you couldn’t bear to part

with? There’s a ring I finished the

other day called the Hestia ring. It’s

a really simple organic band with a

few tiny recycled white diamonds

set in. I love that it’s so understated,

with subtle little details. I was

wearing it to take some photos for

the website and really, really

wanted to keep it on my finger. It

hasn’t sold yet, so who knows?

How does it feel when you are out

and you see someone wearing

your work? Pretty amazing! Who

would you love to see wearing

one of your pieces? I’m always

really flattered whenever anyone

chooses to wear one of my pieces.

It’s so great to see when people

find a piece that resonates with

them, especially if it’s an

engagement ring or something

that celebrates a significant

milestone. Describe the process

for making a custom-made piece.

Every piece is different and the

process can vary quite a bit, but we

usually start with a consultation to

brainstorm ideas for the general

design. This can be looking at

pictures of past pieces I’ve made,

trying on pieces in my gallery, and

finding out which elements the

client is drawn to – colours,

‘I’m a bit of a magpie

and can’t resist a

beautiful sapphire’

textures, setting styles, gems. It’s

great if we can meet in person, but

I’ve made pieces for people further

afield too by communicating via

email, with lots of pictures to make

sure we’re on the same page. Once

we have a good idea of what it’s

going to look like, I create wax

models of the piece, which can be

adjusted until it’s exactly how we

want it to look. Once it’s just right,

the wax model is cast in metal

using the traditional lost-wax

technique, which is then refined

and polished to create the final

piece. The whole process can take

from two weeks to two months,

depending on the design, but the

more time we can allow the better

– I’m a one-woman show so extra

time is always appreciated to get it

all looking perfect (or perfectly

imperfect, as is more the case with

my pieces!). Some tips for

maintaining and storing jewellery.

To keep jewellery looking its best,

it’s always a good idea to remove it

before bed or before anything

where it’s likely to come into

contact with dirt or solvents.

Swimming (especially in

chlorinated pools), cleaning,

gardening and cooking are the big

ones. I have a little dish in the

kitchen and bathroom to pop rings

in so they don’t go astray. Most

pieces can be cleaned once a week

with just soapy water and a

toothbrush. When you are not

making beautiful jewellery, what

do you love to do? Jewellery is my

passion so it’s hard to stop but I like

a bit of work/life balance by

getting out into nature, visiting

other art galleries and trying my

hand at various other crafts – I tried

wood carving not long ago, and

would love to have a go at pottery

some time.

BRIGHT SHINY THINGS

THE FILING

KABINETT

How would you describe your

jewellery style? Our style is

contemporary leaning towards art

jewellery. Important for us are

uniqueness and good design. We

use traditional materials such as

gold and silver along with a variety

of other precious and non-precious

materials. Where do you find

inspiration? Inspiration comes

from many sources, whether it be

from specific investigations of an

idea or something we have

observed during our day-to-day

travels. Lynn often finds inspiration

in the botanical world and in Elfi’s

latest solo show she questioned

the definition of preciousness and

explored the hidden beauty of

bone. For Jeremy, the design

process often starts with materials

like native stones but he is also

inspired by the simplicity of

Scandinavian aesthetic. What are

you working on at the moment?

We have a travelling exhibition of

work, which is currently on display

at Gallery Thirty Three in Wanaka.

This is work that the three of us

have made in reponse to our

various interpretations of its title,

SCALE. Commissions or your own

creations – do you have a

preference? Both have their place

in our practice. We love using our

creativity to develop our own

designs but it is also satisfying to

create a unique piece of jewellery

for clients. Throughout the year we

are constantly producing new work

to add to our collections. Apart

from your own, whose jewellery

do you love? Within New Zealand

we love Craig McIntosh’s stone

work but also Warwick Freeman

and Jane Dodd, plus the exciting

work of a variety of international

jewellery artists. How did you

come to be a jeweller? We have all

had thorough training at various

institutions and other workshops

around the world. Elfi trained in

Germany at the Jewellery

Akademy in Pforzheim, Jeremy

trained in Dunedin and with

jeweller Jens Hansen in Nelson, and

Lynn in Whanganui and as a

partner in Fluxus, in Dunedin.

What’s the best thing about the

job? We love the fact that we

spend our days being creative and

making jewellery, plus we enjoy the

atmosphere in the workshop. The

three of us have a great shared

sense of humour. Any pieces you

are particularly proud of? Any

work that makes it to the point of

being displayed in the gallery or an

exhibition has gone through a

process of design, creation and

critique. Whenever someone falls

in love with a piece of our work and

we see it walk out of the gallery, we

are always proud. What was the

last piece you made that you

couldn’t bear to part with? The

parting with a piece is not always

the problem, what is particularly

satisfying is when the design

process has been well resolved or

the client’s brief has been met.

There are often pieces that we have

a special connection to, whether it

be because of the materials used or

just the end design being unique

– these are difficult to let go of.

How does it feel when you are

out and you see someone wearing

your work? It is always a big

compliment to see our work being

worn. It feels like the jewellery is

doing its job. Who would you love

to see wearing one of your

pieces? It would be awesome to

see a big collector such as

Madeleine Albright (former US

diplomat) wear one of our pieces.

Apparently she has a great

understanding of contemporary

jewellery and has been collecting

for years. When you are not

making beautiful jewellery, what

do you love to do? Walking the

fourth member of the workshop,

Ruby, our 10-year-old Bernese

Mountain Dog.

How would you describe your

jewellery style? My personal style

is simple and versatile, everyday

pieces you can wear to any

occasion. I’m on a real gold vibe at

the moment; it is so warm and

adaptable. My daily go-tos are a

diamond necklace with a fine gold

chain, diamond stud earrings and a

gold bangle. My jewellery design

style could be described as

modern, contemporary, bespoke

creations. Where do you find your

inspiration? When we purchase

stones I am already thinking about

designs that will show them off in

the best way. I also love the

collaboration with clients, when

they come in with their ideas I use

that to steer my vision towards

something really special.

Commissions or your own

creations – do you have a

preference? Every piece we create

is a collaboration between us and

our clients. I love working this way

as it gives every piece a unique and

special story that will always be

attached to it. Apart from your

own, whose jewellery do you

love? I hold a lot of admiration for

Naveya & Sloane, it is simple and

modern – I also love their branding

and how they market themselves.

While I was in France, I visited

Cartier and De Beers – who both

have amazing collections! What’s

the best thing about your job?

That it doesn’t feel like a job at all! I

am able to have a creative outlet

while meeting amazing people. I’ve

laughed and cried (happy tears)

with clients, I love being able to

bring people joy by designing their

dream piece. Tell us about the first

piece you designed. I had a

beautiful Burmese ruby and trilliant

cut diamond to create a pendant

for a necklace. I designed it around

the stones into a simple, but

amazing piece. Any pieces you are

particularly proud of? It was more

about the couple than the piece.

Together we created the ring of her

dreams, it was really stunning and

we made sure to accommodate all

his requests including budget. It

was a privilege to be a part of it

and I was so glad we could achieve

the perfect ring that had a massive

wow factor and ticked all the

boxes. They also came in as a

couple after he had bought the ring

(but not proposed) so I had to

pretend I had never met him

before! What was the last piece

you made that you couldn’t bear

to part with? Not a piece but a 1.5

carat oval diamond that was so

beautiful and well proportioned. I

had mixed emotions the day it sold.

How does it feel when you are out

and you see someone wearing

your work? It’s more when I see a

client I have created a piece with.

They often spot me out and thank

me again, and then introduce me

to whoever they’re with like we’re

old friends (which we are!). What’s

one thing people should know

about working with a jeweller?

That you don’t necessarily have to

compromise, we can fine tune a

piece to fit all your criteria. I’ll never

say what you should or shouldn’t

have, but work with you to get that

special piece. Also, it’s a lot of fun!

So don’t feel daunted or

intimidated when you walk through

the door. Some tips for

maintaining and storing jewellery.

To make it last a lifetime, take it off

for the gym, housework, gardening,

etc. Also, get it checked regularly; if

you’re worried just bring it in. It’ll

take us a couple of minutes to

check but could save you from

looking down one day and realising

a stone is missing! When you are

not making beautiful jewellery,

what do you love to do? I’ve been

practising yoga for five years and

I’m about to start teaching part

time. I also love spending time with

friends, whether it’s a drink at

Poplar Social Club or one of our

city’s stunning hill walks.

ART IMITATING LIFE

Ara Institute of

Canterbury’s three-year

Bachelor of Design

(Fashion Technology and

Design) easily rocks a

reputation for excellence

– students on the course

have scooped the

prestigious Avant Garde

section of the Hokonui

Fashion Design Awards

for the past three years.

The killer course is well known in

the fashion industry for

emphasising technical skills, but

the consistent wins in the

boundary-pushing Avant Garde

section of the awards – New

Zealand’s longest running

competitive platform for upcoming

designers – show its students can

also deliver on conceptual work.

In their first year of entering,

Rachel Macnab and Ethan

Allchurch-Rush, two second-year

Fashion Design students at Ara,

turned their personal experiences

into haute couture gowns and

captivated the award judges.

Macnab, having had serious

symptoms from a concussion,

looked at how she could turn her

experience into a dress that would

tell her story. She excelled and

received the Hokonui Heritage

Precinct Open Avante Garde

Award for her design.

Allchurch-Rush combined nature

with mental health, in particular a

problem common in the trans

community of body dysmorphia

and dysphoria, and won the award

for Best Use of Wool. Body

dysmorphia is a disorder in which a

person’s perception of their body

does not align with reality, while

gender dysphoria is a sense of

being in the wrong body.

Ara’s programme leader for

Fashion Technology and Design,

Nathan Ingram, says Ara’s

consistent wins in the Avant Garde

section has its roots in the focus on

technical skills. “This technical

background provides the

fundamental framework, and the

aim is for them to push boundaries

of where fashion can go and what

fashion means to them as

contemporary designers,” he says.

NOTHING COMPARES TO YOU

Comparison coach Lucy Sheridan. P76

THE GOOD LIFE

With Dr Libby. P78

PERFECT PICK-ME-UPS

Kiki Health. P79

Nothing compares to you

Since she stopped comparing herself with others and started to

lead her own life, Lucy Sheridan hasn’t looked back. Now she

shares her insights with others, online and in a new book.

Cityscape caught up with the UK author and ‘comparison coach’.

S

o how did you come to be

the world’s only comparison

coach? Comparison has

always been part of my life since I

was young. I compared myself

often in lots of ways and it has

been as exhausting as it sounds. In

my late 20s I decided I had finally

had enough and committed to

exploring the root cause of my

toxic habit. This led me first to the

self-help aisle of the bookshop,

then to psychology videos on

YouTube and then progressed

more seriously into me exploring

my own coaching training. Through

this process I was able to create a

set of tools and techniques to

massively reduce comparison and I

decided to go ‘all in’ six years ago

when I decided to dedicate my

work life to it. What do you do?

Currently my time is divided into

supporting private one-to-one

clients and I also have a group

coaching programme starting in a

few months. Alongside these

services I give workshops, talks in

schools and produce lots of free

content for social media to help

people get over comparison in

their own lives. What did you do

before you started on this path?

I used to work in the corporate

world – more specifically, the

advertising industry. Tell us about

the moment you decided to stop

comparing? It was a bit grizzly

really – I was scrolling my phone,

76 CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Christmas 19

NOTHING COMPARES TO YOU

fully dressed under a duvet on a

perfectly lovely Saturday

afternoon. My phone died and I

realised I had lost hours of the day

(AGAIN!) just judging myself

against others and it struck me that

this sort of behaviour just had to

stop. It was getting me nowhere

and it finally became too much. Are

you completely cured, or do you

lapse occasionally? I find that my

comparison comes in peaks and

troughs, and I know that an

episode is over when I see or hear

about someone that might trigger

my comparison and I just don’t

care. So, instead of feeling envy or

self-judgement, I just feel

completely neutral – it’s very low

key but it feels like freedom. When

did you realise your story would

be relevant to other people? It

was a case of following clues – I

noticed when I started talking

about my own comparison on very

early blogs, and even conversations

at the pub with friends, it

stimulated discussion. Everyone

seemed to have their own story

and experience and yet back then

it felt a bit taboo. Thankfully this

isn’t the case so much anymore but

I committed to following the clues

and the signs of resonance to try

and help people feel less alone.

How important were your

appearances on Oprah’s Life Class

to framing your ideas? They really

played a part – it made me realise

the opportunity to make a

difference and gave me the

confidence to take my ideas more

seriously. You must be excited

about your book The Comparison

Cure coming out? How long have

you been working on it? Goodness

yes! It has been brewing for a

couple of years but I decided to

take it seriously at the beginning of

2018 and pitched to the agent I

really respected. From there the

proposal was written and approved

and I found my dream publisher.

‘It struck me that

this sort of

behaviour just

had to stop’

Things moved quickly from there

and I wrote the first draft between

January and April this year in order

to prepare for a UK publication

date of December 26. Why Boxing

Day? Is that to avoid comparison

with other books in the

pre-Chrismas deluge? The festive

period is such a source of

comparison triggers and with the

new year signalling a new start for

so many of us, I hope with a Boxing

Day publication date the book

becomes a source of help and

guidance as we come out of the

intense December period. You also

run online courses – tell us about

them? I love these online forums –

they range from one-off sessions to

more structured, three-month

programmes. To give an example,

my #comparisonfree classrooms

are two-hour coaching sessions

based on a theme, such as how to

gain more focus. People can buy a

ticket to join me online for the

teaching, and guests join from all

over the world. Typically I welcome

around 150 guests from places

such as Alaska, Spain, Sweden and

New Zealand – it’s a real mix! Is

there a particular book or author

that has inspired you in your life

or career? I think The Big Leap by

Gay Hendricks is a standout text

for me, to the point that I include it

in the welcome pack for all new

clients as I believe the mindset

shifts the author teaches are

incredibly powerful. I go back to

my well-worn book or audio file

about every nine months or so and

it gives me something new to help

my growth each time. What’s the

best and worst thing about what

you do? The best thing is when I

get an email from a past client

filling me in on how they are

getting on with their goals and how

happy they are staying in their own

lane. The worst thing is time

management challenges – I am

based in the UK and if I have a

client in New Zealand this can

mean a very early session time, and

if I have a client in the US on the

same day this can mean a very late

session time! Sometimes I have to

go for a nap in the afternoon. What

has been the most surreal

moment in your career/life to

date? Definitely being on Oprah’s

Life Class – I still think back and

wonder ‘Did that actually happen?’.

What advice would you give to

your younger self? Trust the

timing of your life – my comparison

has often been triggered by feeling

behind other people or late to the

party, when in fact events and

developments have unfolded

perfectly for me and my own life.

Lucy Sheridan’s book

The Comparison Cure goes on

sale on December 26.

proofcoaching.com

WIN! Cityscape has a copy of Lucy Sheridan’s book The Comparison Cure to give away. To enter the draw, email

info@somocreative.co.nz with ‘Comparison Cure’ in the subject line and tell us why nothing compares to you. Entries close December 31.

WELLBEING

DR LIBBY

THE GOOD LIFE

Temptations abound during party season

but it is possible to stay healthy without

missing out on the fun and festivities.

‘It’s a good idea to

have a glass of

water in between

alcoholic drinks’

W

ith the silly season upon us

and the numerous events

this can bring, it’s easy to

consume far more alcohol and

poorer quality foods than we might

usually. While alcohol can fit into a

healthy lifestyle and enjoying it

occasionally may be nourishing for

your soul, regular overconsumption

can have significant

consequences on health and

wellbeing. With all the work parties,

family gatherings and social events

spanning these months, many

people share with me that by the

end of the festive season they are

feeling far from their best. It is

entirely possible to maintain

great health and energy across

this time without compromising

your social life or missing out on

the fun and festivities. Here are

some tips to help:

Stay hydrated During these

warmer months, it’s important to

stay well hydrated. Even mild

dehydration can lead to symptoms

such as headaches and fatigue, and

it’s very common for thirst to be

confused with hunger. In fact, many

people cannot wait for that

after-work drink because they are

both thirsty and hungry. To test this

out for yourself, when you first

arrive home or to a gathering, have

a large glass of still or sparkling

water and a handful of nuts and

see if you still want the wine.

Alcohol has a dehydrating effect so

it’s also a good idea to have a glass

of water in between alcoholic

drinks, if you choose to drink them.

Or, instead of alcohol, you could try

kombucha or a delicious mocktail

made from sparkling water, mint

leaves and fresh lemon juice.

A little preparation can make

a big difference If your social

calendar is packed with events,

take a little time in advance to

consider which events you want to

enjoy whatever food and drinks

you feel like at the time, and which

events you might choose not to

drink alcohol at, for example. For

events that don’t have a sit-down

meal and are likely to involve lots of

canapés and fried foods, make sure

you aren’t starving when you arrive

at the event. Consider eating a light

meal at home before you go, or if

you’re heading to the event

straight from work, prepare some

nourishing snacks that you can

have beforehand if you want to

minimise the poorer quality

options being passed around. If

attending an event is rare for you,

of course relax and enjoy

everything on offer; but if they are

frequent, pick and choose the ones

where you do this.

It’s not all or nothing I can’t tell

you how many times I’ve heard

people say “I’ve ruined it” after

drinking too much or overindulging

in poor quality foods on

offer at an event. But it’s this kind

of thinking that tends to lead them

to continue eating and drinking in a

way that doesn’t serve their health.

If you tell yourself you’ve ruined it,

it’s likely that you’ll perceive you

have to “start over” tomorrow, or

next week … or next year, and in the

meantime you’ll likely keep making

poor quality choices. But the truth

is, it’s not all or nothing. Each

moment is a new opportunity to

make different choices, and you

haven’t ruined anything.

A walk-in wine fridge – yep, you read that

right, Cityscapers – this is for all those who

love wine and love to keep it at its best. Craig

Shaw from Harvey Norman Commercial filled

us in on all you need to know about the

Espace 1000 Bottle Walk in Cellar and we’re

definitely lusting after it. Start collecting

those delicious drops because this killer

fridge can easily fit 1000 bottles inside. Wine

fridges have come a long way from a mini

fridge in the corner of the room – the Espace

has a chic, textured glossy black aluminium

finish that complements the beautiful

wooden shelves inside. It also boasts an

anti-UV glass door, racking and a cooling unit

to keep your bottles at the perfect

temperature, no matter the weather outside

– the fridge even creates a vibration-proof

environment to protect the storage life and

quality of your wine. You can just leave it to

VINO FINO Whether you consider

yourself a wine connoisseur or simply an avid

consumer, if it’s expert advice you’re after then you

can’t go past the crew at Vino Fino.

S

ince opening in 1993, Vino

Fino has become the largest

single retailer of fine wines

in Christchurch, specialising in

wines from New Zealand, Australia

and around the world as well as an

ever-growing selection of craft

beers and spirits.

A big reason for that success is

their loyal customers, who value

the ability of the Vino Fino team to

come up with the goods whatever

the budget or requirements. Rex

Ormandy is in charge – he has

more than 35 years’ experience in

the industry, including being

involved with wine education and

judging. Retail manager Paul

Cabout is the in-house spirits

expert. Dean Lovett’s wine

passions lean towards European

wines. Michael Ormandy

represents the new generation of

wine lover, managing Vino Fino’s

social media and growing range of

natural and organic wines.

Rounding out the sales team is

James O’Flaherty, who has a

background in wine retail but is

also responsible for Vino Fino’s

craft beer selection.

Vino Fino’s progress since its

early days has mirrored the rise of

the New Zealand wine industry.

Back in 1993, Marlborough

sauvignon blanc was only

beginning to garner attention, and

the first North Canterbury and

Central Otago wines were just

appearing on the market. Vino Fino

has grown alongside those areas’

pioneering wineries, establishing

firm relationships along the way.

Nowadays, far from being at the

end of the world for wine, Vino

Fino is adjacent to some of the

world’s most exciting wine regions.

To keep up to date, the team

continually taste and evaluate wine

for Vino Fino’s stocking selection.

They are proud of their ability to

identify wines of distinction and

especially those that offer

outstanding value, backing it up

with good old-fashioned service.

Vino Fino is proudly local,

independent and family-owned.

They have no ambitions to be the

biggest, fastest or flashest, just to

be very good at what they do.

You can shop with Vino Fino

either online or in person in their

Durham Street store, which is well

worth the visit to check out the

wine memorabilia on display. These

rare artefacts are kindly on loan

from the Kingscote Family Trust

and were once part of the Fletcher

Humphrey Museum Collection.

Shoulders above the rest

In a world of complex menus, degustations and

cross-cultural cuisine, Pedro’s House of Lamb has

kept it simple. Pedro’s serves just one dish – a

beautiful slow-cooked lamb shoulder so tender the

meat falls off the bone, served with a side of

scalloped potatoes and salad. That’s it. Pedro’s

cooks its lamb in the Mediterranean style – with

rosemary and garlic, and slowly roasted for six

hours with Spanish olive oil. That’s how it gets to be

so tender. That and the delicious flavours are what

keep loyal customers coming back for more.

From its small beginnings in a container in Merivale

to four outlets across the country, Pedro’s House of

Lamb has established itself as one of this country’s

best lamb culinary experiences. You can enjoy the

very best New Zealand lamb from either of Pedro’s

two Christchurch locations – the original Merivale

container store or its newest store, which is in

Sydenham. The latter has seating for those who

can’t wait till they get home before sampling the

delicious wares.

FOOD & DRINK

THE WINE LIST

Giving the gift of beer

You’ll start a conversation, help save the planet and ensure your

present is the toast of Christmas Day, says Ralph Bungard.

A few seasons back our extended

whānau decided to do away with

the gifting of gimcrack over the

festive season. The rule became

that gifts had to be homemade

and/or consumable. It’s a popular

rule. It reduces waste and suits our

changing world, where we are

looking to minimise our global

footprint. When it came to

homemade and consumable, I had

it easy – I had beer!

I know it’s hard to believe but

some people say they don’t like

beer and they may not appreciate

it as a gift. In most situations, when

questioned why they don’t like

beer, you may find that they don’t

like brown, slightly sweet and malty

beer synonymous with the

old-fashioned style that dominated

New Zealand brewing for decades.

I get great pleasure at the Three

Boys Brewery front-of-house

introducing these non-beer

drinkers to a sour and salty gose, a

fruity Belgian-style wheat, or even

a rich, roasty, chocolaty stout and

having them go mmm, I like that!

It’s hard to imagine anywhere in

Aotearoa these days that does not

have a genuinely local microbrewery

within reach. It is these

breweries that will have something

out of the ordinary that would

make a great gift for beer lovers

and those non-beer lovers who

need converting.

Go out of your way to pick

something unusual – a

fruit-infused sour, a chocolate

stout, a whisky barrel-aged pale

ale, a super-cloudy New

England-style IPA. And pick

them from a genuine local

brewer – not one of those

pseudo “craft” brands from

the multinationals. You’ll

tick all the boxes, you’ll

create a conversation, you’ll

introduce someone to the

amazing world of beer

flavours, you’ll support a

local business, and in some

small way you’ll be saving

the planet.

Besides, what’s the worst

that can happen – you’ll

have to help them drink it?

FIDDLER’S GREEN VINEYARD &

BISTRO CHARDONNAY 2018

After so long living in the shadow

of the all-conquering sauvignon

blanc, chardonnay is again finding

favour with New Zealand wine

drinkers. It’s examples like this

from Fiddler’s Green Vineyard &

Bistro in the Waipara Valley that

are stoking the switch as well.

This full but smooth and

elegant chardonnay has

flavours of ripe melon,

peach and apricot,

complemented by toast

and buttery complexities. If

it has been a while since

you sampled a chardonnay,

here’s a good place to start.

PEGASUS BAY ESTATE PINOT

NOIR 2016

The excellent free-draining soils of

the Waipara Valley are gaining a

reputation for the quality of the

pinot noirs they produce, and this

example from Pegasus Bay is

clear evidence of why. The

bouquet is packed with red and

dark fruit, with hints of pepper

and spice. Layered beneath

that are savoury notes of

grilled game and black olive

tapenade. The palate is

satisfyingly concentrated

with fine-grained tannins,

while a refreshing minerality

ensures the wine remains

tight and focused, with a

lasting finish.

QUIET COMMOTION

UK rock legend Lloyd Cole. P106

LADI, INTERRUPTED

Karoline Tamati, aka Ladi6,

is back on stage. P108

BRING ON THE SUNSHINE

KC & the Sunshine Band

bring the heat. P110

QUIET COMMOTION

UK rock legend Lloyd

Cole prefers intimate,

acoustic gigs these days

over the stadiumstorming

days of

performing with the

Commotions. He tells

Cityscape that breaking

a song down for

acoustic performance

exposes just how strong

or weak it is.

This is your eighth visit to New

Zealand – what keeps bringing

you back? It’s what I do. The model

for making a living as a musician

these days is exactly the opposite

of what it was when I started

making music. We used to make

money from selling records and

then we would go on tour to

promote those records. Now it’s

exactly the opposite. Do you still

enjoy touring? I do. The only thing

that’s sometimes a little worrying is

that obviously I’m not getting any

younger and it’s tiring. So I like to

try to schedule it properly and I’m

also now taking action and working

on my fitness so I’m a little stronger

than I was last time I was there.

Your new album, Guesswork, is

proving a commercial and critical

success – do those things still

matter to you? What does success

mean to you these days? Critical

success has always meant

something to me – I read the

newspapers, I used to read the New

Musical Express when I was a kid. I

always wanted to be in that

106 CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Christmas 19

QUIET COMMOTION

position of making music that

would please all types of people, so

it matters to me. I wish there was a

way we could feel more optimistic

about selling more copies of this

record than we sold of the last one

but it’s a challenge. It’s just you

and Commotions guitarist Neil

Clark on this tour – that must be a

long way from the scale of those

early tours? It’s very different. I

don’t mind playing with a band

these days, I occasionally do play

with a band doing this or that. But

touring with a large group of

people I don’t miss at all. There’s a

great freedom you’ve got when

there’s just two or three of you on

the road, it’s a lot easier. We can

enjoy it a lot more and we have a

lot more flexibility in how we

handle things. And what I’ve

learned over the years is that band

shows have got … there’s an impact

from loud music that you have that

is different to what you have with

acoustic music, but if the songs are

strong enough there’s a lot more

spontaneity possible in an acoustic

show. In a perfect future for me I

would continue to play acoustic

shows but I would play band shows

every now and again. With such a

wide and diverse catalogue, how

do you decide what to play? Will

be it be a mix of old and new? Yes,

it’s a mix of old and new for sure.

The last time I was on tour it was

called The Retrospective Tour

because it was based on two boxed

sets that Universal released and the

boxed sets covered 1983 to 1996, so

I didn’t play anything from after

‘96. So on this tour, From

Rattlesnakes to Guesswork, we are

probably going to feature a lot

more of my solo material just so it’s

quite different to the last tour. I

don’t want people to come and see

me again and say he played mostly

the same songs as last time. I did a

couple of solo versions of the tour

last weekend – I played 32 songs

and only 10 of those songs were on

the previous tour. Your songs

‘Perfect Skin’ and ‘Rattlesnakes’

are anthems for your fans – do

‘There’s a lot more spontaneity

possible in an acoustic show’

you feel pressure to keep playing

them? I don’t feel pressure to do all

of them. The songs that I play every

single concert there’s probably

only about five. I play ‘Are You

Ready to be Heartbroken’ and

‘Forest Fire’, but I’ve rested ‘Perfect

Skin’. I’m resting ‘Brand New

Friend’ right now. I was very

pleased with the audience

response to the set last weekend,

given that there were fewer

Commotions songs than maybe a

usual set would contain. And

maybe that’s appropriate now –

I’ve been making music for 35

years and the Commotions was

only the first five years. Do you

choose different songs because it

is acoustic? When you break a

song down to acoustic format, it

really exposes the strength of the

song, whether the song is strong or

not. If it can stand up on its own

with just a couple of guitars then

it’s going to be a strong song for

sure. One of the songs that really

surprised me that way and the one

that made me realise this is the

case is ‘Forest Fire’. I didn’t play it

for a long time acoustically

because I thought, how can I play

that acoustically? It’s all about the

drums and the guitar solo. And

then I was on stage in Dundee in

Scotland one time and they literally

held siege to the stage until I

played it. It’s very simple but it’s a

very strong piece of music and it

doesn’t need the guitar solo and it

doesn’t need the drums. On the

other hand every now and then

you’ll think I quite fancy playing

this song from this album and you’ll

break it down on the guitar and go,

aah, actually there’s not much of a

song there, most of that recording

was really just musicianship and

production. Do you have a pre- or

post-show ritual? I do – the

clothes that I wear on stage look

like the clothes that I wear all day,

but they’re not. I always dress for

the stage. If my schedule allows,

after soundcheck I go back to the

hotel, probably even try and get an

hour of sleep, and then I take a

shower and then I dress for the

show, because I feel I want to get

my stage hat on and I want to start

feeling like a performer. I don’t

think anyone wants to come and

see me wearing dirty clothes I’ve

been wearing all day. I have a very

strict routine and me getting

dressed for the show is the start of

me becoming focused, to get my

mind in the right state. Because

when I’m on stage, the thing about

these solo shows or even the duo

shows, there’s only me up there so I

have to be completely on and

completely focused. Otherwise if

something went wrong and I

couldn’t react to it quickly enough

or smartly enough, I could lose the

audience, I could lose the show,

and I don’t want that to happen. So

I want to make sure I’m thinking

only about doing the show.

What is one thing that you hope

audiences take away from your

performances? I just want people

to enjoy it, you know, it’s a show, I’m

a performer. The show isn’t about

me having an agenda or anything,

the show is meant for enjoyment

and I hope the body of work that

we choose to present and our

presentation of it is good enough

for people to have a great night and

hopefully want to come and see

something similar another time.

Ladi, interrupted

Karoline Tamati, aka Ladi6, is back in the studio, back on stage and back

from the brink of completely losing her voice. Ahead of her performance at

the South Island Wine & Food Festival in December, she shares her relief and

her dreams for the future with Cityscape.

H

ow’s work going on the

new album? It’s going slowly

– I always forget how much

time it takes. It’s always good for

me to remember to have deadlines

but also to trust the process and

forget the pressure. You’ve had a

rough time over the last few

years, including losing your voice

– you must be enjoying getting

back on stage and back in the

studio? Did you ever start to

wonder if you would return?

When I lost my voice and was

recovering I did wonder, and it was

heartbreaking, I can’t lie. So, as you

can imagine getting my voice back

and having the opportunity to

write a new record means the

world to me. I feel extremely

grateful and am really enjoying

every moment I have right now

onstage, in the studio, dreaming up

the next steps I want to take.

There’s a real culture of

collaboration in New Zealand

hip-hop – why do you think that

is? I think it comes with being a

small country and having the right

attitude. I’ve had so many amazing

collaboration opportunities

throughout my career and it’s

always been through mutual

respect and joy for the craft. I

believe we can and will continue to

grow and foster that attitude here

in Aotearoa. Who do you dream of

doing a collab with? I dream of

collaborating with a world-renown

theatre someone and lighting

director to create some Ladi6

musical experience that’s unique

LADI, INTERRUPTED

and crazy exciting with a full party

atmosphere. I don’t know what and

I don’t know who but I love

dreaming about it! How do you

think your Samoan heritage has

influenced your music and career?

Being Samoan has influenced the

way I interact with the world in

every way, every day. There is no

real way I can distinguish, define

and divide myself to explain how

and where it has influenced me. I

simply am because I am Samoan.

Tell us about your tattoos – do

they have particular cultural or

personal significance? Yes, my

hand is directly copied from my

own mother’s hand, who was

gifted its design by master tatau

artist and family friend Suluape at a

time when my dad was also being

given his tatau. The motifs

represent Samoan navigation by

the stars across oceans and

symbolism of Samoan people and

lifestyle, worms we eat, mountains

we have and people in my family.

You got your break working with

Shapeshifter and Fat Freddy’s

Drop and now you are doing the

same for JessB, Bailey Wiley and

others – is that important to you?

It’s important to me to collaborate

with artists I admire and generally

like and connect with as people. I

don’t see myself as giving them

their break so much as

collaborating with artists that are

smoking hot flames. That’s why I’ve

always collaborated on shows with

SilvaMC all these years, because

she’s pure flames talent. You have

a strong sense of personal style

– what brand are you crushing on

at the moment? I’m actually out of

the loop – I rely heavily on my

stylist, Sammy Salsa, to tell me

what’s out there – but I’ve always

loved Kowtow and other ethical

New Zealand brands. I like making

my vote on ethical fashion by

where I spend my money – I don’t

think I’m unique in that way.

What’s the favourite item in your

wardrobe? My favourite currently

is my sister pink floor-length

kimono from Geoff’s Emporium.

You wear some striking jewellery

– what can you tell us about it?

Do you have a favourite piece or

jeweller? My favourite piece of all

time is my custom gold choker that

was made for me by jeweller

MichaelJohn and his friend. They

handcrafted this incredible piece of

art and I wore it at a Vodafone New

Zealand Music Awards. What can

you never leave behind when you

go on tour? My lavender oil. I’m so

addicted to it, and I’ve gotten into

the habit of taking my vaporiser

too these days. What’s your go-to

spot in Christchurch? I don’t have

one. I’m slowly getting to

reconnect with Christchurch and all

the things that are there, as I’ve lost

touch a bit. If you weren’t doing

what you are now, what would

you want to be? I’ve thought about

this a bit lately, and I always

dreamed of being an actor when I

was little, but I also want to learn to

fly and I’d love to run a very small

boutique business that requires

lots of detail and attention – so

yeah, nah, I don’t know!

Bring on the sunshine

Harry Wayne Casey gave his name and boundless

musical talent to the legendary KC & the Sunshine

Band. Ahead of bringing the heat to A Summer’s Day

Disco in January, he tells Cityscape it’s still all about

burning up the stage.

Y

our songs have become

synonymous with the

golden age of disco, the

soundtrack of a generation – did

you have any idea just how

enduring KC & the Sunshine

Band’s legacy would be? No, I

don’t think you ever can have an

idea what the future of your music

will be. People always play oldies

but the interest in our music seems

to be more than I ever noticed

before in the history of music. And

you’re still making new music

– ‘Give Me Some More’ with Nile

Rodgers and Tony Moran. How

much fun was that collab? It was

interesting because we were never

in the same room at the same time.

Tony sent me the track and I did my

part on it, then we asked Nile and

sent it to Nile. It’s interesting you

can make music this way without

being in the same room at the

same time. Quite different from

when we were first recording.

Without samples from you, Nile

Rodgers and James Brown, would

there be any hip-hop? That’s a

very interesting question because

so much of our stuff has been used

without permission and is hidden in

certain ways that it would be hard

to detect. But I would think not.

Apart from this tour, what is on

the cards for you in 2020? We

have a lot of new music coming out

and we’ll see where that goes. I

love touring so that’s pretty much

what I’ll do. Is this your first visit to

New Zealand? Yes it is, and I’m

very excited. I’ve heard amazing

things about New Zealand, so I

can’t wait to experience that and

hopefully I have time to do some

things while I’m there. Any live

shows you’ve seen lately of note?

I just saw the Jonas Brothers,

Ariana Grande, Pink and I’m going

to go see Aerosmith. What has

been the most surreal moment in

your career/life to date? Being

nominated for the Grammys;

getting a star on the Hollywood

Walk of Fame; and meeting some

of my peers – people that I grew up

watching on TV or listening to on

my stereo. Those have to be special

moments. What advice would you

give to your younger self? Do

what you did. Follow your dreams

and your heart. Do you have a

pre- and/or post-show ritual? I do.

I stretch and sometimes I meditate.

What can we expect from your

Christchurch gig? An amazing fun

time with 15 musicians on stage

having fun. And most importantly

you, the fans, having fun.

Watching

Nick Paris from Lumière

reviews three of the best

from the current crop of

cinema releases.

THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON

A down-on-his-luck crab fisherman embarks on a

journey to get a young man with Down syndrome to a

wrestling school and away from the retirement home

where he’s lived for the past 2½ years. Starring Shia

LaBeouf, Bruce Dern and Dakota Johnson, this tale

through the dangerous yet relaxing vibes of the

Southern Atlantic land and seascape combines the

heart of the Hunt for the Wilderpeople with the ‘pages’

of a Mark Twain adventure. Look out for it in January.

4K RESTORATION

DON’T LOOK NOW

The chilling and mysterious Nic Roeg classic pitches

Venice’s back alleys into a brilliant chamber piece of

madness. Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie’s

relationship is formed by the tragedy of the drowning

death of their daughter, Christine. The watery grave

symbolises birth, death, salvation and damnation, with

the viewer wondering what’s around the corner.

GAZA

This film was inspired by a photo series Andrew

McConnell completed in 2011 about the surfers in Gaza.

Documentary filmmaker Garry Keane met McConnell in

2012: both shared a passion for the plight of the trapped

and tortured people of Gaza, so they decided to

combine their skill sets and make a film to highlight the

issues there. The film was made between 2014 and 2018,

with McConnell spending almost the entire 2014 conflict

with Israel filming on the ground. Gaza is compelling

because we hear of life there in the people’s own words.

BLUE MOON, LEE CHILD

Few authors these days have fans

RISING STAR

Louis Baker is living the dream after his rapid ascent to the heights of Kiwi

music. Ahead of his appearance at December’s South Island Wine & Food

Festival, he tells Cityscape how he got started, and who his heroes are.

our career has come a long

Y way in a short time – your

head must be in a spin? It’s

been a joy to have my passion

become a full-time career. I’m very

grateful to be able to make music

and tour – it’s what I’ve always

wanted to do, so it feels a bit like

living the dream. When did you

start to feel you had a future in

music? I fell in love with music at

an early age but started to feel I

had a future in it from age 17 when

I was a top-five finalist in the

secondary schools Play It Strange

songwriting competition. How

important was that to giving

you the confidence to push on?

It really did give me that boost of

confidence I was looking for. It

affirmed there was something

there, so I started to spend more

time being creative, songwriting

and releasing music. Do you

remember picking up your first

guitar? Yes, I can. The first song

I learnt on the guitar was

Cornershop’s ‘Brimful of Asha’.

I vividly remember strumming

the guitar on my lap (lapsteel

style), because Mum would

often play in open D tuning, so

the sound was rewarding relatively

quickly. It was a bit unconventional

but I started playing the chords

with my thumb because it was the

only way I could hold down the

chord with my small hands on the

old Yamaha FG-180. What was

your other career choice? Have

you ever had a day job? I wanted

to play cricket for New Zealand.

Things were going pretty well

until music took over. I haven’t

really had a day job; I do a

lot of music teaching

and mentoring in

schools. Tell us

about your

first gig?

I remember it well. There were

about two people there and our

metal band played at Wellington’s

Indigo, 171 Cuba Street. We were

badly dressed and we all had very

long hair. All good experience.

How have your personal musical

tastes changed over the years? I

have evolved and my tastes have

changed over the years, but I feel

like I’m still searching for the same

things in music – something that

moves you and makes you feel

something. Do you have a go-to

spot in Christchurch or the South

Island? To be honest I haven’t

120 CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Christmas 19

seen a lot of Christchurch but I

would love to explore it more. I do

love Blue Smoke, it’s a wicked

venue. The South Island is glorious

and beautiful! I think Lake Te Anau

is spectacular! Certainly many

great places to experience. Do you

have a pre- and/or post-show

ritual? I don’t eat a lot because it’s

harder to sing on a full tummy!

Not really. I just make sure I’m

prepared, my voice is warmed up

and the vibes are positive. Food

always calls my name after the

show though. Who are your

musical heroes? Too many to

name – Hendrix, Jeff Buckley,

Joni Mitchell, D’Angelo, Prince,

Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield,

James Brown, J Dilla, Pete

Rock, Miles, Coltrane,

Cannonball, Pino

Palladino, Steve

Jordan… Any new Kiwi

artists that have caught

your attention? I think

Bene is amazing – great

writing and great

sound. Lots of different

stuff coming out!

Always love Fat

Freddy’s Drop.
