The mission of TNT Swimming

is to provide opportunity for the individual athlete

so they may achieve at the highest level of their desired attainment.

Previously known as the Tulare Swim Club, our club elected to merge in 1992 with Kings

Swim Club from nearby towns of Hanford and Lemoore for a variety of reasons deemed

beneficial to both clubs. Hence, both clubs adopted a new name that would be representative

of a broader geographical region, and at the same time reflect the banding together of

smaller groups of people. The Tule River Indian Tribe is a tribe made up of Yokut (or

Mariposans), Western Mono, and Tubatulabal (from the Kern basin) people. Beginning

around 2005, smaller swim teams in the area began to see an advantage to providing experiences

for their swimmers such as swimming relays, traveling in larger groups, and building

a more competitive program that their athletes could associate with. The concept of

affiliate programs of TNT began to expand. Tule Nation Tritons (TNT) is the name of our

club and we exist within Central California Swimming (CCS) which is the Local Swim

Committee (LSC) and governing body for swim teams in our area. Central California

Swimming is comprised of approximately 20 teams throughout Central California, and is

a regional unit of USA Swimming.

Our swimmers have represented the towns of Bakersfield, Clovis, Coalinga, Corcoran,

Dinuba, Exeter, Fig Garden, Hanford, Kingsburg, Lemoore, Lindsay, Porterville, Selma,

Tulare and Visalia. Although each program has variations in the overall focus, each addresses

the variety in the ability levels of athletes. While we all practice at different times

and in different pools, we are nonetheless one unified team and operate proudly as such

under the TNT banner at meets. Our logo and image are intended to be carried throughout

the organization as there are advantages for our athletes that are associated with numbers.

This united approach provides our athletes greater recognition within Central California

Swimming, and because of those past members who successfully carried the TNT emblem

nationally, better recognition of our current swimmers on national and collegiate levels.

The combined TNT team is proud to have contributed to the development of a World University

Games USA team gold medalist, multiple Olympic Trial athletes (Megan Eppler,

Kyle Grissom, Kohlton Norys, Bradley Matsumoto & Christopher Nolan), Division 1

NCAA qualifiers (Kohlton Norys & Samantha Goates), a National Age Group record

holder, and Division 1 NCAA Champion (Kohlton Norys), as well as numerous nationally

ranked age group swimmers and CCS record holders. We are also proud of our collegiate

representation at schools such as Auburn, Canisius, Cal Baptist, Delta State, Fresno Pacific,

Fresno State, Kentucky, LSU, Saint Vincent, UC Santa Barbara, University of Nevada,

UOP, USC and Wilmington.

The following pages present meet calendars specific to Tulare, and time standards

for various age group and senior level meets that take place both in and

beyond California. Although there is an overlap as to which meets each of our

respective TNT programs will attend over the course of a year, there may be

slight variations. Also, please be advised that a meet schedule pertinent to your

program may be modified over the course of the year. Please be sure to check

with your program’s coach as to which meets he or she intends for you to participate

in.

Time standards in this booklet are presented based on information gathered

near the end of the calendar year. Occasionally, time standards change from

when this booklet is printed, and when the meet takes place. Be sure to confirm

qualifying times by checking the meet sheet when it becomes available. The

meet sheet is the official document that lists time standards, and not information

in this booklet. This booklet is presented to our member families to provide a

general idea as to when meets occur, and provides our membership with a general

idea of the time standards that are required. Please let Phil know if you notice

any errors or omissions.

CLUB ACHIEVEMENT FUNDING

Team travel costs for athletes qualified for travel funding are reduced according to the

level of performance they have reached. Your coach will monitor and submit the necessary

documents for funding; however, each swimmer should also keep track to ensure

that requirements are met, including achievement of the time standards that allow for the

various funding levels.

Funding beginning the 2016 year has been modified when compared to past structures.

There are two funding cycles: Spring (September 1 to March 31), and Summer (April 1

to August 31). Submission for funding occurs only one time ending at the close of each

cycle.

Some General Requirements:

1. Swimmers must be registered with a CCS team, and be training with a CCS team. They may

compete attached or unattached.

2. Swimmers who have been registered for less than six months (or transfer collegiate, or postgrads)

are eligible for 50% funding in that funding season. Post grads are only eligible for

Gold funding.

3. Swimmers must attend at least two swim meets in the season, and one must be an LSC sanctioned

meet.

4. College swimmers are only eligible for funding during the summer season, and must represent

CCS at a summer championship meet (Futures, Juniors, Seniors, US Open, Trials). Sectionals

does not apply for college swimmers.

5. Time standards must have been achieved within 12 months.

Amount of funding is based on availability of funds, and are awarded to clubs based on shares.

There are three levels of funding categories: Gold (8 shares), Silver (5 shares) and Bronze (2

shares). The share amount is determined annually by CCS House of Delegates.

14 2016 WESTERN SENIOR ZONE TIME STANDARDS

Senior Zones is senior-level competition that has gained momentum in past several

years, possibly due to the more stringent time standards assigned to meets such as

Sectionals and Junior Nationals, and takes place in Clovis. Swimmers participate

with their home team, and not as an All Star team as is common for the Age Group

Zone meet. This being the case, there is no travel fee outside of those normally assumed.

ATHLETE PROTECTION

ANTI-BULLYING

Tule Nation Tritons is proud of it’s current and past team members in their focus of inclusion.

The family atmosphere among athletes is valued, despite any differences that may exist between

individuals. Any new member to the team is encouraged to continue promotion of these

values, and any current or new member is strongly encouraged to promptly bring attention to

events that cause that individual, or others, to experience a situation where they may feel uncomfortable

for any reason. Our team values the participation of each individual, and also

values the diversity that each brings to the group.

Bullying-type actions are prohibited at any team function, whether targeted to other members

of our own team, or toward members of any other organization. Bullying in any manner,

(physical act, gesture, oral, written, electronic, image, sound, or of any nature regardless of the

method of transmission), directed at any other individual that to a reasonably objective person

has the effect of:

1) causing physical or emotional harm to another member or their property,

2) places the other member in reasonable fear or harm to themselves, or damages their

property,

3) creates a hostile environment,

4) infringes on their rights, or

5) disrupts the training process, or the orderly operation of any USA Swimming activity

is not tolerated. Engagement by any individual on our team in these acts may result in removal

from the team.

SAFETY

Athletes need to be aware that our training locations reside within publically-accessible venues,

and because of potential risks that may be associated with this, caution should be considered

while engaging in certain practices.

At the conclusion of practice, athletes are encouraged to wait inside the fenced area for their

ride home. If waiting for transportation, please inform a team coach or parent that your ride

has arrived. Athletes should feel comfortable asking any coach for use of their cell phone if a

call to a parent/guardian is desired.

The use of audio-visual recording devices, including cell phones, are not permitted in locker

rooms, changing areas, or restrooms. Furthermore, athletes and parents are encouraged to

report any non-team members who may be videotaping athletes at anytime during teamsponsored

events should the action appear suspicious.

Protection of young athletes is the responsibility of every adult: coaches, volunteers and parents.

Athletes are encouraged to report any behaviors that are perceived to be inappropriate,

whether they are personally involved, or have knowledge of involvement of others, to a coach.

If for any reason the athlete is uncomfortable approaching a coach, they are encouraged to

communicate with any adult so that the issue can be immediately addressed. Coaches are considered

mandated reporters of abuse and neglect of children, and as such, are required to report

situations that place a child in harm’s way should situations be suspect.

At swim club functions, except where venue facilities require otherwise, changing into or out

of swim swimsuits anywhere other than in designated areas is not appropriate and is discouraged.

TEAM TRAVEL POLICY & CODE OF CONDUCT

28 TNT TULARE GROUP ORGANIZATIONAL SCHEMATIC

The diagram on this page summarizes the various groups in Tulare,

the coach who trains that group, and some examples of meets that are

most appropriate for swimmers in that group. Some of the meets listed

would be considered goals for swimmers, and the time standards for

the meets can be found elsewhere in this handbook.

29

TULARE GROUPS

Groups in Tulare TNT have been established based on a caution that misalignment

between the swimmer’s intentions and the goals of the group has lasting

effects in the long-term motivation of the swimmer. As parents, please be aware

that swimmer placement in the wrong group may cause that swimmer to lose

motivation in the long run. Both placement in a group that is too easy, or placement

in a group that is too advanced will cause frustration in any swimmer.

Swimmers will typically not complain, because their efforts and actions are often

motivated by a desire to please both their parents and their coach.

It is recommended that there be a conference with coaches (receiving coach and/

or releasing coach) before a swimmer changes groups. Swimmers who are 12

years old and younger should conference with coaches along with their parent.

Swimmers 13 years of age and older could meet with coaches without a parent

present. Conferencing with coaches prior to a change in groups ensures that the

expectations of the new group are made clear to both swimmers and families in

advance of the change. Unanticipated expectations of the level of commitment

and effort is detrimental to both the longevity of the athlete and to the efforts to

establish a cohesive and focused core training group for that swimmer and other

swimmers. It is suggested that swimmers change groups in cohorts. This approach

allows swimmers the ability to share their concerns on perceived difficulties

with others who are experiencing the same challenges. Realizing that struggles

are common, may contribute to developing tenacity.

The next few pages will explain the groups in Tulare, their focus, and the requirements

for participation.

MOVING FROM ONE TRAINING GROUP TO ANOTHER

At times swimmers are uncertain of movement to the next group. This hesitation

may reflect a conflict that exists between their own desires, and those of the

adults who influence their desires. We encourage that decisions be based on the

true desire of the athlete, and that they not be rushed when moving to a more

difficult training group. In efforts to try and help clarify movement protocol, and

to minimize the related stress when swimmers move groups, our intent is that

individuals promote in cohorts, and only at designated times when moving at the

age group level. Swimmers may move back to a previous group at any time, and

do not need to wait for a certain date.

This section of the protocol is applicable when moving from the Pre-competitive

group to the Swimmer Group, or from the Swimmer Group to the Advanced

Swimmer Group. Movement into the Pre-senior or Senior Groups are distinct

from this section of movement protocol.

If minimum requirements for promotion are met in terms of time standard, age,

and mechanical correctness, swimmers may move from one group up to another

during certain time periods in the year. There are three time periods where upward

movement occurs from the Pre-competitive to Swimmer group, or from

the Swimmer to the Advanced Swimmer group:

1. Within the 1 st week of January following December championship meets

2. Within the last week of April following Far Westerns

3. Within the last week of August following Western Zones

30 PRE-COMPETITIVE GROUP

Swimmers who have no competitive swimming experience are recommended to

begin in the Pre-competitive group. This group is focused strictly on learning to perform

the four competitive strokes legally, as well as the turns associated with all four

strokes and transitions between strokes for the individual medley event. Additionally,

swimmers in the Pre-competitive group will learn the forward start, the back start

and relay exchanges. Swimmers graduate from the Pre-competitive group once their

coach has certified that the swimmer can successfully (legally) swim the following

events: 50 fly, 50 back, 50 breast, 50 free and 100 IM. The Head Age Group Coach

must signed off the USA Swimming Start Progression prior to the swimmer leaving

the Pre-competitive group. Upon the swimmer’s request, a registered Tulare coach

can observe and certify the successful completion of all five events during one session

prior to or after a scheduled practice. Once successful, the Pre-competitive

swimmers may move to the Swimmer Group.

SWIMMER GROUP

Swimmers who have participated in a competitive swim program (club, summer

league, or high school) may begin in the Swimmer Group. This group trains five

days a week for one hour each day and is coached by a certified USA Swimming

coach. It is expected that swimmers in the Swimmer Group already know all four

strokes, all turns, and all starts legally. Athletes begin interval training while in the

Swimmer Group. Yardage typically ranges from 1000 to 2000 yards per practice.

Swimmers begin to learn more technical aspects of stroke mechanics in all four

strokes. Practices are focused 50% on stroke mechanics and 50% on training. While

in the Swimmer Group, swimmers will be introduced to basic training equipment

including a kickboard, pull buoy and cut swim fins.

Although not mandatory, swimmers in the Swimmer Group are encouraged to enter

at least one local swim meet per training cycle. The swimmer group is ideal for

those young athletes who intend to increase their training time for the sole purpose

of improvement during the summer league, or high school, season.

Swimmers in this group are welcome to extend their training on a daily basis by

swimming an additional 30 minutes with the Advanced Swimmer Group simply by

request. Once the Advanced Swimmer Group time standard is reached, swimmers

may begin training in the Advanced Swimmer Group for the duration of practice.

These time standards are listed as the Advanced Swimmer Group Time Standards

in this handbook.

Swimmers enter into the Advanced Swimmer Group only during the transition periods

after a discussion takes place between the coach of the Swimmer Group and the

coach of the Advanced Swimmer Group. A conference is also encouraged between

the coach of the Advanced Swimmer Group and the swimmer and parent of the

swimmer who is moving up. A swimmer may return to the Swimmer Group at any

time, simply by stating the desire to the coach of the Advanced Swimmer Group.

ADVANCED SWIMMER GROUP

31

The Advanced Swimmer Group practices one hour and thirty minutes a day, five

days a week. This group is intended only for those swimmers who have experience in

competitive swimming. The focus of the Advanced Swimmer Group is clearly on

competition at the club level, and the purpose of this group is primarily to provide a

foundation for swimmers to be successful in a senior program. Long term goals of

swimmers in the Advanced Swimmer Group should include National Rankings,

Sectionals, Junior Nationals, Senior Nationals, US Open and Olympic Trials.

Because of an elevated focus, the expectation of swimmers in this group is to begin

developing the work ethic and practice habits that lend themselves to becoming a

successful future senior swimmer. Prerequisites for the Advanced Swimmer Group

include achieving the Advanced Swimmer Group time standards, and approval

from coaches. Due to the increased level of training expected in the Advanced

Swimmer Group, swimmers must be a minimum of 10 years of age. To help in the

transition for younger swimmers, 8-under swimmers, and those who have not yet

qualified by time, may train with the Advanced Swimmer Group in its entirety on

Sundays. Swimmers in the Swimmer Group may also train in the Advanced Swimmer

group for 30 minutes beyond their scheduled practice.

Swimmers in the Competitive Group typically train between 3000 to 4000 yards

per practice. Practices are scheduled five days a week for one and a half hours each.

Dry-land training and gaming related to strength, flexibility and coordination development,

as well as a focus on proper stroke mechanics, are incorporated into the

training. Swimmers in this group will take two weeks off in the summer and two

weeks off in the winter. These swimmers are expected to swim in all team meets

and to participate in the highest level of meet for which they qualify. Patterns that

suggest otherwise may prohibit movement to the Pre-senior Group.

Swimmers may train an additional 30 minutes with the Pre-Senior/Senior group if

any Southern California Swimming Age Group Invitational Time Standard had

been achieved anytime in the past, or if the swimmer is at least 13 years of age. The

time must have been recorded in the USA Swimming national data base. Full advancement

into the Pre-senior Group involves further requirements which are explained

later.

PRE-SENIOR REQUIREMENTS

(modified January 2014)

When considering a transition into the Pre-senior group, swimmers must achieve the

Pre-senior Time Standard. Once achieved, the swimmer must successfully complete a

three-month probationary period while training in the Pre-senior group, during which

time attendance, meet participation, and stroke correctness will be monitored. Any of

these three factors may be cause for the swimmer to return to the Advanced Swimmer

group.

If considering the transition, the swimmer must notify Phil, who will then, along with

the swimmer, monitor attendance for three consecutive months. The swimmer must

maintain 90% practice attendance during each of the three months to be eligible for the

Pre-senior group. Attendance for each day is recognized only if the swimmer completes

the practice. Swimmers must maintain an 90% monthly practice attendance calculated

on days that the coach is present. This percentage may include practices at

meets that require a qualifying time. Some swimmers may not qualify for the meets

where practices are held. These swimmers must monitor their practice attendance accordingly.

If a swimmer fails to maintain 90% attendance in any given month, a two

(95%) or three (98%) month attendance rate will be considered for fulfilling the attendance

requirement.

Any required stroke correction identified during this probationary period will be communicated

to the swimmer. These changes, if any, will be identified in the first month,

and are required to be corrected prior to the third month of the probationary period and

maintained. It is strongly recommended that any major stroke flaws be corrected prior

to beginning the probationary period. Since the Pre-senior group spends less time on

technical corrections, additional stroke specific requirements may be stipulated before

participation in the probationary period. Besides other possible requirements, this includes:

1. Competing in a minimum of 27 events prior to the probationary period without a disqualification,

or

2. Not have a disqualification over the previous six months (assuming appropriate participation in

team meets).

Once in the Pre-senior group, if the swimmer does not maintain a 90% attendance rate,

that swimmer must transition back to their original group until they re-achieve the

qualifying time standard at one of the designated qualifying meets. Swimmers are expected

to participate in the championship meets listed on the age-group and/or senior

meet calendar if they qualify.

Qualifying meets include:

Short Course Junior Olympics (February)

Far Westerns (April)

Summer Age Group Invitational (June)

Long Course Junior Olympics (July)

Western Zones (August)

Winter Age Group Championships (December)

In efforts to stabilize the culture of the Senior and Pre-senior training groups in Tulare,

and to help minimize movement from other programs into Tulare, the Pre-senior group

is available only for swimmers from the Advanced Swimmer Group in Tulare. The Pre

-senior group is not an option for swimmers from other programs, unless they first

attend the Advanced Swimmer Group for a minimum of three months. However, these

individuals may train with the Pre-senior group for 30 minutes following the Advanced

Swimmer practice if desired.

PRE-SENIOR & SENIOR GROUP

The Pre-Senior and Senior swimmers train together. The current standard differentiating the

Pre-Senior from the Senior swimmer is the achievement of the Senior Group Time Standard.

These time standards are similar to those qualifying times which mark the first level of higher

quality senior-level competition in a trials/finals format for Tulare swimmers.

The nearly exclusive focus of these two groups is reaching levels of performance that rank

swimmers among the fastest in the nation, both at the age-group and the senior levels. Those

individuals and families whose aspirations and commitment levels do not match these groups

should not consider transitioning into these groups. Only those who intend to contribute as

individuals toward the group’s culture and work ethic should consider training here. The intent

of the Senior Group is to provide the best opportunity to participate at the college level,

from the Junior College to the upper Division 1 NCAA level, by providing the foundation to

be successful at any level of college swimming that they express an interest in. Swimmers in

the Senior Group will be exposed to basic understanding of Junior College, NAIA and NCAA

Division 1 through Division 3 levels of swimming.

In efforts to maintain a culture and competitive dynamic that the group had established, swimmers

may enter into the Pre-senior group only from the Advanced Swimmer Group, and not

directly from any other affiliate, or non-affiliate program. Swimmers who enter into the Presenior,

or Senior, groups do so only in conjunction with an interview taking place with the

swimmer and parent resulting in a signed MOU. This group is not open to high school swimmers

whose sole intent is to prepare for the high school season. These limitations are not applicable

to athletes who have attained a USA Junior National time standard.

Accomplishments of former swimmers from the group have truly been astonishing. In 2011,

TNT experienced its first swimmer to represent the United States as Kohlton Norys competed

at the World University Games. Current and past members of these groups have achieved

National Age Group (NAG) and Central California Swimming records, NAG rankings, competed

at Olympic Trials, Junior and Senior Nationals, U.S. Open and have successfully (made

finals) competed at various Grand Prix meets including the Santa Clara International. Additionally,

our swimmers have been very successful throughout all levels of collegiate competition

from the Junior College State Championships, to becoming the champion at Division 1

NCAA’s, and have achieved these accomplishments early in their college careers. These are

the swimmers who have also competed in the same heat with swimmers such as Haley Cope,

Ryan Lochte, Aaron Piersol and Michael Phelps, and have gone on to gain the interest from

colleges such as the University of Florida, USC, Stanford, Rice, Tennessee, University of

Indiana and Washington State. Current and previous swimmers have also competed for colleges

such as Auburn, Cal Baptist, Canisius, Fresno Pacific, Fresno State, Kentucky, Louisiana

State, Notre Dame, Harvard, UC Santa Barbara, UOP and USC.

Besides dry-land training, members of these groups are expected to train two-hour practices

five days a week. Practice yardage is typically between 5000 to 7000 yards. Though no practices

are mandatory, individuals who do not practice beyond two consecutive weeks may need

to re-qualify for the group at the next USS sanctioned meet. Also, those individuals who remove

themselves from the group for any reason may be asked to re-qualify prior to returning.

Supplemental coaching in any form, and by anyone (including parents), will not be tolerated

once in these groups. This may result in swimmers being returned to the Advanced Swimmer

Group. Swimmers of these two groups are expected to participate in those senior-level meets

posted on the annual meet calendar for which they qualify. A pattern of non-participation in

targeted meet communicates a divergent goal, and swimmers will be removed from the group

accordingly.

Participation in the selected senior-level meets placed on the Senior Meet Calendar is considered

central to the overall goal in the development of the potential senior swimmer. Training

cycles that span months often focus on performance at these meets, and when a swimmer does

not attend the targeted meet, months of training are at a loss. Reasons for not participating at

35

these meets is a considered a limit to the sacrifice and commitment that an individual swimmer,

or their family, is willing to put forth with respect to the development of the swimmer

in the context of this group. These meets are used for developmental purposes, placing swimmers

in situations where they may not be as successful when compared to swimming to agelike

peers within Central California Swimming. However, the ability to perform in these

situations is paramount, especially if considering upper NCAA Division 1 aspirations.

A character trait of independence from parental coddling is highly encouraged for development

while in this group. Should parents find a need to interact with their swimmers during

practices, the swimmers will be immediately removed from practice so that the parent can

have their swimmer’s undivided attention. The swimmer will not return to practice that day.

Continued patters will result in the swimmer being removed from the group. Parents are not

to be on the pool deck during practices, with the exception of the Pre-competitive group. As

is common with college programs, parents are encourage to minimize their interaction with

the athlete during the competition time span at team travel meets. Swimmers will make mistakes

due to this lack of coddling; however, mistakes made during club development has

much less negative ramification when compared to mistakes made during the college experience.

Our intent is to develop the athlete, both in the water, and out of it.

Our TNT swimmers who are competing at college programs away from home are welcome

and encouraged to return during their off season to train at home. Swimmers who return for

Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break or Summer are not charged during those times. This

provides an opportunity for our current developing athletes to interact with those who have

gone through our TNT program and who are currently a part of a college program.

36 EQUIPMENT (For Tulare)

Each of our affiliate programs will reflect variations in training equipment that swimmers

need. The training group that a swimmer belongs to will also determine what equipment is

necessary. Typically, more advanced swimmers will require more items. Check with your

coach to determine what will be necessary. The information below reflects examples of

what might be required for various groups in Tulare, beginning with the Swimmer Group.

Swimmer Group (Coach: Sunny Olson)

Training Swim Suit: Training suits should be inexpensive suits that the swimmer would wear primarily

at swim practice. It is totally permitted, and common, that swimmers train and compete in

the same suit. It is suggested that if a swimmer has a training suit, and also a more expensive

racing suit, that (s)he not wear their race suit at practice. Overuse of the suit reduces its longevity.

Goggles: There are various types of goggles, and the preference is based on the comfort level for the

swimmer. Although more expensive, there are options for prescription goggles for those swimmers

who need them.

Swim cap: This item is not mandatory, but is highly suggested for those swimmers who have long

hair. Since swim caps tend to deteriorate over time, it is suggested that one be used for racing

(with the TNT logo), and another one be used for training (with or without the TNT logo—please

do not use any team cap that reflects another California club team while at practice, and only a

TNT cap while at swim meets).

Advanced Swimmer Group (Coach: Joclyn Thiessen)

Kickboard: The blue Speedo kickboard is the most ideal due to it’s small size. Swimmers will learn

to not rely on the buoyancy of the board, and the small size of the board helps in the development

of a more proper body position. This smaller board is also more appropriate for kick drills such as

vertical board kicking.

Pull Buoy: These come in various sizes by Speedo. The single piece, foam, hourglass floatation device

should be of a size that complements the swimmer: smaller size for smaller swimmers.

Fins: Speedo fins should be cut down to extend no more than 2 to 3 inches beyond the toe. The shorter

fins allow for faster leg motion while using fins, and more closely simulates leg speed during

races without fins. Norm Allington of Swim Suits West has the ability to cut fins to the appropriate

length.

Small Paddles: Paddles can be used for developing “feel for the water,” and their use should remain

at a minimum while training at the age group level. Paddles increase resistance and therefore

increase the stress on shoulders. Because of this, paddles at the intermediate level should not be

larger than the smaller black Hannula paddles with holes provided.

Pre-senior & Senior Group (Coach: Phil Black)

Large Paddles: Paddles are used for strength development and their size should reflect the physical

development of the swimmer. Our older swimmers use the large green Hannula paddles, while our

younger swimmers in this group might still use the smaller black paddles. Some swimmers

younger than 15 might use the green Strokemaker paddles.

Snorkel: This device is used both to stabilize the head for the purpose of stroke development, and also

to reduce the intake of air during hypoxic-type training.

Tempo Trainer: Periodically training sets will require a certain stroke rate (or stroke tempo) to be

maintained. The Tempo Trainer helps swimmers monitor their tempo with an audible sound.

Ankle Strap: This is a simple rubber strap that can be obtained from the coach at no cost. Although a

Speedo ankle strap may be purchased, the simple rubber strap is sufficient.

TNT ASSOCIATE COACHES

One advantage of a sizable program is the number of coaches that are available

for our swimmers. Our coaches work together at swim meets to take splits,

give and receive feedback for improving swim performance, and collaborate

when developing relays. Our team currently has approximately nineteen registered

coaches. Many of them are presented on the following pages.

Our swimmers are encouraged to interact with any coach of TNT, and should

feel comfortable approaching any of them if that swimmer’s primary coach is

not present at any given meet.

39

40

TULARE COACHES

Joclyn Thiessen

Joclyn Thiessen is the Head Age Group coach in Tulare,

replacing Angela Martinho beginning in 2013.

Joclyn returns to TNT in her coaching role after completing

her college swimming career for Fresno Pacific

where she still maintains an all-time top-5 time for

the 100 breaststroke event. Prior to swimming for

Fresno Pacific, Joclyn competed for Gary Ota who

coached Immanuel High School, where early on she

established herself as one of the top high school

swimmers in the valley by finishing as runner up at D-

1 Valley Finals while only a freshman (9 th grade) during the spring of 2005.

Joclyn was a standout age group and senior swimmer whose performance can

still be reflected in our All Time Top 100 Times of TNT. She is one of our

swimmers who qualified for Grand Prix level senior meets such as the Janet

Evans Invitational (or LA Invite). Other Grand Prix level meets include the

Speedo Grand Challenge where she earned a second swim as a 13-year old in

the 100 meter breaststroke in 2003.

Six months into the Head Age Group role, Joclyn has developed swimmers

who have broken several team records, set Central California Swimming records,

earned championship final swims at Far Westerns and Western Zones,

as well as national top-10 rankings midway through the reporting cycle. Some

of our 15-18 year old swimmers, such as Mallory Korenwinder and Khloe

McCarthy, recall Joclyn being their first club coach on TNT.

Sunny Olson

Sunny Olson has joined the coaching ranks in Tulare

beginning the summer of 2015, and has had a drastic

positive impact to the program in a very short period of

time. She brings with her a wealth of experience and

credibility as she is a former 4-time High School Valley

championship finalist for Redwood High School, who

went on to set school records for COS, was the defending

Coast Conference Champion, and Community College

State championship finalist. Her performance

earned a swimming scholarship for Fresno State in 1995.

She was the Selma High School head coach in 1996-97,

and coached our sister program, Hanford Swim Club, in

2001. Sunny has been named the current Tulare Sharks

Head Coach, and as a Personal Trainer and Group Exercise Instructor, she

brings the value of overall conditioning to the team.

Katie Fidler

Katie Fidler is an alumni of TNT who has returned to

coach our Pre-competitive group. Her professional career

in social work has taken her from Tulare to Michigan

and back. Katie and her family have been key to

the development of TNT over the years. As a swimmer,

Katie competed for TNT, Sharks, and as a Tulare

Union graduate, was a standout high school swimmer

competing for Tulare Union. Her focus on our club is

on teaching the foundational skills for our introductory

athletes in preparation of advancement to subsequent

training groups. Katie’s professional field of social work is reflected in her caring

and approachable demeanor.

41

Summer Freeman

Joins the coaching staff in Tulare during the winter of

2015, and brings a strong history of success in developing

strong foundational swimming skills to help

ensure success in the future of our young athletes.

Summer has been involved in developing stroke mechanics

along side her father, and former TNT Coach,

Bill Freeman, for many years, and manages the swimming

pool during the summer months, including coordinating

the Tulare City Learn-to-Swim program.

Megan LeVan

Megan joins us during the fall of 2016 and has a deck presence that reflects

many more years of coaching. Her swimming experience takes her to the College

of the Sequoias where she competed in the sprint freestyle events while

there. She is our staff member who offers one-on-one sessions for stroke improvement

on request.

42 SELMA COACHES

Gary Ota

Gary began coaching Chaos when it was created in

1967. He has developed champions and record holders

at the summer league, high school and Sectional levels.

His swimmers have also gone on to be successful at the

Junior National, National, US Open and Olympic Trial

levels consistently from the mid 1970’s until the most

recent Olympic Trials in 2012. Many of his swimmers

have become nationally ranked, and have maintained

world rankings. Gary’s kids also represented the United States as National

Team members at meets such as the Goodwill Games. His swimmers have

gone on to represent colleges including Santa Barbara, Auburn, Harvard,

Notre Dame and Arizona. Gary has also been the Head Coach of Immanuel

High School swim team and the Kingsburg Seawolves over the years.

Kendall Swanson

Kendall Swanson is a product of Southern California

Swimming’s PUMA program located in the towns of Atascadero,

San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande. As one of

their developmental swimmers, she still holds the breaststroke

and butterfly team records there. In high school,

Coach Kendall was a four-time League Champion and set

the League record. Kendall was the standout breaststroke

swimmer for Fresno Pacific University where she holds the

top time for the team in both the 100 & 200 breaststrokes,

as well as the 200 IM events, not simply for one year, but in the history of the

program. In December of 2013, Kendall was honored as the Counsilman

Hunsaker Division II Swimmer of the week recipient based on her breaststroke

performance at the Collegiate Winter Invitational, and her Fresno Pacific

school records. She is an Exercise Science major who has been swimming

competitively for fifteen years, and she looks forward to being a part of

this program for years to come.

Carlee Clarke

Carlee Clarke began coaching the Silver and Gold group

for the Tule Nations Tritons in Selma in 2012. She graduated

from Immanuel High School in 2012 where she

was a cornerstone of the high school team while training

with Gary Ota during all four years. She swam for

TNT in 2011 and 2012; and was known for her success

in distance events. Additionally, she has coached for

Kingsburg Seawolves summer league since 2009.

43

Elisa Garcia

Elisa Garcia, Selma's Bronze and Silver coach, calls the

swimming pool her second home being both a lifeguard and

swim instructor, in addition to coaching our young developmental

swimmers to reach the higher realms in the sport.

Additionally, Coach Elisa has coached the Aqua Bears for 5

years prior to joining the club coaching staff. Her background

is an advantage lending to her ability in developing

proper mechanics for our current club swimmers. Her desires

include helping our youth develop skills well beyond that of swimming,

and include the development of personality characteristics such as effort, tenacity

and a sense of community. She exemplifies this by pursuing education

in the field of Criminology with an emphasis in Forensic Behavioral Science,

as well as volunteering at community programs such as the PAWS animal

shelter in Selma.

Alicia Cleveland

Alicia is a graduate of Fife High School in Fife, WA

where she swam all four years. She earned a school record

in the 100 backstroke where she was named Most Inspirational

in 2005. She was also a two-time State Champion

in the 2IM, and was named Seattle Times Athlete of the

Month and was a two-time Tacoma Athletic Commission

Athlete of the Month. The Tacoma News Tribune named

her one of the top five swimmers to look out for in the state of Washington.

She had been a Head Swim Coach at Twin Lakes Gold & Country Club, and

was also a coaching staff member on King Aquatic Club that trains out of the

Federal Way pool near Seattle. A former swimmer for Fresno Pacific, Alicia

was a part of the 2010 women’s team that took second place at the NAIA

Swimming and Diving Championships, and she still maintains an all-time top

5 ranking for the school in both the 100 & 200 backstroke events. At Nationals,

she totaled 63 points in individual and team events, and was a national

champion, winning, along with her teammates, the 200 freestyle relay.

44 VISALIA COACHES

Jason Ricablanca

Jason has an extensive background in club swimming as

can be determined by his long standing individual team

and Central California Swimming relay records that are

still in existence. Jason is a local product of the Visalia

Area Swim Team (VAST), and is one of the few local

swimmers who qualified for Junior Nationals and the

US Open, and who also competing internationally at the

age group level. He competed at All Stars, Far Westerns,

Western Zones and was nationally recognized as a

"Top 16" swimmer in the nation in multiple individual

and relay events. Jason was also a four year varsity

swimmer and water polo player at Redwood High

School (1996-2000) and was a WYL swimming and water polo champion, CIF

D-I Central Section champion, All-American, and part of Redwood High

Men's back-to-back D-I Valley championship swim team, the only team in a

20 year span to beat Clovis West.

Jason's coaching achievements include coaching the Central California Swimming

Western Zone team at San Jose during the 2010 summer, and has developed

both team record holders and swimmers who competed at the more prestigious

age group meets such as AA's, Age Group Invite, Far Westerns, Western

Zones. As a Senior coach, his swimmers have qualified for meets such as

Speedo Grand Challenge, Swim Meet of Champions (SMOC), Sectionals and

Futures. He was the head coach of the Visalia Buccaneers during the summers

of 2011-2012, and is currently a water polo and swim coach for El Diamante

High School.

Nate Norman

Nate began his aquatics career with the Exeter Eels Swim

Club at the age of 7. Competing in swimming and water

polo at Exeter Union High School, Nate earned top honors

as an All-Tourney, All-League and All-County water polo

player during his four year varsity career, while also being

a four year varsity swimmer with the school, winning two

league titles. After his high school career Nate went on to

the College of Sequoias, where he earned his Associates

Degree in Psychology and swam both years as part of the

2014 Bay Conference Championship Team. He also received his Bachelor’s

Degree in Psychology in spring 2015.

As a coach, Nate has served as an assistant coach for the Exeter Eels (2007-

20013) and is currently the returning Head Coach of the Visalia Waves since

2014. Nate has also taught swim lessons to student-athletes of all ages since he

was 14.

Ryan Larsen—Returned in 2014 to coach the Silver 2 Group

Melanie Hash

45

Melanie is a former El Diamante standout who

went on to compete for the College of the Sequoias,

and was a 4-time finalist at the BVC Championships

in 2015. Melanie is coaching the Silver 1 and

Bronze 1 Groups, and was the senior coach for the

Visalia Waves, as well as an assistant coach for the

College of the Sequoias.

Ashley Lamascus

Ashley is a former TNT swimmer since the age of

13, and a freestyle and backstroke specialist who

represented Central Valley Christian High School in

Visalia at CIF Valley Championships while in high

school, and then on to COS as a 3-time runner up at

the Bay Valley Conference (BVC) Championships

in 2015. She is coaching the Silver 1 and Bronze 2

Groups.

46

HANFORD COACHES

Rhonda Shaw

Rhonda is a local standout swimmer from our area who is now the

head coach in Hanford. She is extending the experiences of summer

league swimmers from the area. Hanford swimmers typically

maintain meet improvement percentages higher than any TNT

program. Standout senior-level swimmers from Hanford include

Sectional and Grand Prix qualifier Josh Tabers and Far Western,

Western Zone and Sectional qualifier Hannah Giles. Hannah was

a Far Western finalist as a 10-under swimmer. Rhonda has also

developed swimmers such as Taylor Shaw to qualify for the

Southern California Age Group Invitational, the IMX Games of 2009, and senior meets

such as the Terrapin Senior meet. In 2015, her swimmers have also earned a final swim

at the Winter Age Group Championships. Rhonda’s swimmer, Allyson Duffy, swam

under the 11-12 girls CCS Record in the 1650 freestyle in late 2010. Rhonda is assisted

by Jessica Bowden.

Mike Boudreaux

PORTERVILLE COACHES

Mike Boudreaux picks up the reigns of the Porterville program to

help support David Gong as he takes much needed respite. Mike

has two young children that compete, and is coordinating the efforts

to help keep the opportunity for Porterville members to stay

active in club swimming throughout the year. His rapid learning

curve and visible desire to support the swimming community has

helped Porterville remain active, and swimmers are showing improvement

as a result. He is assisted by Angela Boudreaux and

James King.

DINUBA COACHES

Andrea Sandoval—Brings over ten years of coaching experience

to this years inception of the Dinuba TNT program.

Andrea has coached both the Dinuba High School team, and

has been named the Head Coach in 2015. A 2009 graduate

of Reedley High School, Andrea is an IM and breaststroke

Valley finalist for the school. She began swimming at the

age of six with the Reedley Marlins, and is now the Head

Coach of the summer league Aqua Emps team where she has

been coaching in excess of five years.

SOME TERMS USED IN SWIMMING

Common in any sport, swimming involves protocols and vocabulary that might not

be clear to individuals new to the sport. Some terms will be explained elsewhere in

this booklet. Here are a few others used in our sport.

Check in—Sometimes referred to as “positive check in”: While at swim meets,

swimmers typically must find the Clerk of Course (usually a group of tables set up

with sheets of paper on them), identify themselves, and indicate which events they

will be swimming for the day. This typically takes place first thing in the morning.

When there are finals, swimmers sometimes need to “check in” again if they make

finals—this is referred to as a “positive check-in.”

Scratch—Swimmers should notify the Clerk of Course if they decide not to swim an

event they were originally entered into. It is an expectation to “scratch” the event(s)

they will not be swimming (for instance, if they leave the meet early). If a swimmer

makes finals and they don’t appear for their event, and they failed to scratch, penalties

often include that swimmer becoming ineligible (scratched) from the remainder

of the meet, and sometimes a penalty includes a monetary fee.

Declare an Intent to Scratch—If a swimmer qualifies for finals, they typically have

30 minutes after the results of their event have been announced to either scratch, or

“declare an intent to scratch.” If, within that 30 minutes, the swimmer is undecided

as to whether they want to swim that event at finals (often the decision is based on

their performance in another upcoming event), they may “declare an intent,” and

then wait until later in the meet (beyond the 30 minute allotment) to decide. Swimmers

typically have until after their last event to finalize the intent.

Taper—In more advanced training groups, swimmers spend time during the season

training hard. Swim meet performances during this higher intensity training phase

often do not reflect the hard work of the athlete. This is due to the increased stress

that is being applied to the body. The term, “swimming tired,” is often used during

these cycles of training and meets. There is usually no cause for concern, even

though the goals would be to swim at or under their fastest times while “swimming

tired.” Swimmers often “taper” at the end of a training cycle. This is a period of reduced

training, and is a time where the body has an opportunity to recover, or “rest.”

The length in terms of time for a taper depends on a swimmer’s body type. Swimmers

often swim at or under their fastest times when “tapered,” or “rested.”

Championship Seeding—Sometimes referred to as “circle seeding”: Championship

meets are typically those that offer “trials” and “finals” where swimmers swim

events in the morning (trials), and if they perform well enough in terms of place (top

8, top 16, and at times top 24 or top 32 depending on the meet format), they will be

eligible to swim finals in that same event later in the day. During these types of

meets, the swimmers in the fastest 3 heats (often the top 24 swimmers) are spread

out among those three heats. For instance, the fastest swimmer is in the fastest heat,

the 2nd fastest swimmer is placed in the 2nd fastest heat, and the third fastest swimmer

is placed in the 3rd fastest heat. This pattern continues for the swimmers in the

fastest 3 heats where the 4th fastest swimmer is placed into the fastest heat, the 5th

fastest swimmer into the 2nd fastest heat, etc.

BASIC SWIMMING RULES

Competitive swimming consists of 4 strokes and each has its own rules. Here are 1-

sentence explanations of the strokes and a few common mistakes that may result in a

swimmer, or swimmers becoming disqualified:

Butterfly: Swam with both arms and both legs moving simultaneously throughout

the stroke with the entire arm above the water during the recovery.

Potential Mistakes: 1. One arm trails the other, 2. The legs or feet cross one another

at some time during the kick, 3. The swimmer touches the wall with one hand

before or above the other, or touches with one hand only, 4. The swimmer takes

a partial stroke during the finish thereby recovering underwater.

Backstroke: Swam on the back in any way desired.

Potential Mistakes: 1. The swimmer rolls over toward the stomach (“shoulders past

vertical”) sometime during the race before the act of turning. 2. The swimmer

stays on their stomach too long prior to a turn, 3. The swimmer goes underwater

before the finish, 4. The swimmer remains underwater beyond 15 meters

from the start or any turn.

Breaststroke: Swam with both arms and both legs moving simultaneously throughout

the stroke with some part of the arm remaining underwater during the recovery.

Potential Mistakes: 1. At some point the arms or legs do not move in a simultaneous

manner (the swimmer might adjust their goggles during the race using only one

hand), 2. The toes are not pointed outward during the propulsion phase of the

kick, 3. The swimmer’s pull goes beyond their hips during the stroke after the

initial underwater pull-down, 4. The second pull after the start or turn (first pull

after the underwater pull-down) progresses too far prior to the head surfacing,

5. The swimmer touches the wall with one hand, or with one hand prior to, or

above, the other at the finish or during a turn, 6. The swimmer begins the first

pull prior to the body being horizontal.

Freestyle: Swam in any manner.

Potential Mistakes: 1. Swimmer does not touch the wall during a turn, 2. Swimmer

pulls on the lane line, 3. Swimmer pushes off the bottom of the pool.

Individual Medley: Swam in the order of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle

by one individual during the race.

Potential Mistakes: 1. Swimmer swims the strokes out of order, 2. Swimmer repeats

a stroke during freestyle, 3. Swimmer considers the backstroke to breaststroke

transition (turn) as a backstroke turn and not as a backstroke finish which requires

contact with the wall prior to the body rotating past vertical toward the

stomach.

Medley Relay: Swam by 4 individuals in the order of backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly

and freestyle.

Potential Mistakes: 1. One or more swimmer swims his or her stroke out of order, 2.

The freestyle swimmer repeats a previous stroke, 3. A swimmer subsequent to

the lead-off swimmer leaves prior to the previous swimmer touching the wall.

AGE GROUP vs. SENIOR

AGE GROUP swimming is referred to as such because swimmers typically compete

within certain age groups at swim meets. For instance, an eleven year old will

only compete against 11 and 12 year olds. There might be an “open” event where

the age groups are combined and an 11 year old competes against an 18 year old,

but since the meet has age groups within its schedule elsewhere, it is still considered

an age group meet.

Age group meets include most local A-B-C meets as well as the Age Group Invitational

(formerly called AA’s), Far Westerns, and Western Zones. These later three

meets require a minimum time standard to compete, and are of a higher caliber

than the typical local age group A-B-C meet; however, they are still considered

age group meets.

Age group meets are considered developmental meets to help swimmers progress

on to the senior level of swimming. Categorizing swimmers into age groups helps

swimmers compete at an appropriate performance level. The 6-under, 8-under and

7-8 age groups are locally defined. Only the 10-under, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16 and 17-

18 age groups are nationally recognized.

Swimmers who newly enter an age group (age 9, 11, 13, 15 or 17) sometimes find

competing against the swimmers at the top of the age group (10, 12, 14, 16 or 18)

challenging. Swimmers should remember that the age grouping is only for developmental

convenience. The long term goal should be to move on to senior swimming

where only the time matters, regardless of the age.

SENIOR SWIMMING is referred to as such because most of the athletes who are

eligible to compete at the senior level are older swimmers. The term “eligible” is used

because most senior meets require a time standard in order to participate. In a senior

meet, there are no age groups, only the event. All ages swim together and swimmers

are seeded together according to their times. If a swimmer is eleven years old, and

meets the minimum time standard, they are eligible to compete at the meet. A swimmer

older than 18 may also compete at senior meets. It is common to see twelve year

old girls competing along side twenty year old women at senior-level meets.

Examples of National level senior meets include Sectionals, Junior Nationals, US

Open, Senior Nationals, Olympic Trials, and the Olympics. There are other senior

meets that are local within the various geographical areas of the United States. These

would include the Mission Swim Meet of Champions (SMOC), Clovis Senior Q, and

the Terrapin Senior Meet to name three that are on our team Senior Meet Calendar.

One important goal that developmental swimmers should embrace involves progressing

toward the senior level of swimming. College recognition is more often established

at the senior level, and not at the age group level, although due to a national database

of times, recruiters have easy access to times anywhere they were swum.

Many of the senior meets that our team attends involve the participation of swimmers

and teams that are affiliated with colleges and universities. Most major universities

have a club swimming team, or their university team also maintains a club charter. For

instance, Trojan Swim Team is the club program associated with the USC men’s and

women’s college team. As our TNT swimmers qualify for meets such as the Santa

Clara International, various Grand Prix meets, Janet Evans Invitational and Speedo

Grand Challenge, our TNT swimmers compete at the meet with college programs from

Stanford, USC, UCLA, Texas and Auburn to name a few.

GOALS

51

TNT Swimming in Tulare is a very goal-oriented program. Our intent is to help swimmers

learn the importance of establishing goals, help them establish realistic yet challenging

goals, develop a level of commitment to achieve the goals they establish, and

provide support in helping them achieve those goals. Although goals are important, no

swimmer is prematurely forced to establish goals. Their readiness is based on their observed

work ethic and level of performance.

Many of the goals that our swimmers establish are influenced by time standards. There

are varying levels of time standards that we would like our swimmers to be aware of.

Due to the amount of information related to time standards that is available to our athletes,

we encourage our swimmers to obtain and maintain a team binder. This is a three

ring binder where swimmers collect and organize the various pieces of information available

to them. The following list reflects examples of items that could be in the binder.

Some of the items are available on our web page at www.tritonswim.org and can be

printed and directly placed into the binder:

• The Goal Sheet that is specific to the swimmer

• Time standards for various meets that do not appear on the Goal Sheets

• The annual meet calendar

• The swimmer’s fastest practice times

• Splits and stroke rates for the various events swam

• The Training Monitoring Matrix

• Weekly yardage maintained over the year

As previous pages indicate, even advancement from one group to another is based on

time standards in Tulare. This is one level of establishing goals. Another level focuses on

achieving time standards for various swim meets.

The Age Group meet calendar is presented along with the Senior Meet Calendar. Time

standards for championship level meets at the Age Group and Senior levels can be found

on the individual swimmer’s goal sheet. The table (Selected Senior Meet Time Standards)

provides time standards for additional selected senior meets held throughout the

year. Dates for these meets can be found on the annual senior meet calendar. Our team

records that were established during previous years, as well as time standards for some

swim meets, are presented elsewhere in this booklet.

SHORT COURSE VS. LONG COURSE

Achieving a time standard for a swim meet can be accomplished either while competing

in a short course or long course facility. There are three course types in

competitive swimming:

Short Course Yards—This is the course that is most familiar to United States swimmers,

whether in summer league, high school, club or college swimming. It is a 25

yard course.

Long Course—This is the course used at most international competitions, including

the Olympics. It is sometimes referred to as an Olympic size pool. It is 50 meters

long. Time standards for Olympic Trials could only be achieved in a long course

pool during 2012; however, Olympic Trial time standards were available in both

long course and short course historically.

Short Course Meters—This is less common among United States swimmers, but is

the most common short course facility in all other parts of the world. Time standards

for meets such as Western Zones can be made in a short course meter pool. It

is a 25 meter course.

52

TEAM APPAREL

Tule Nation Tritons is a Speedo sponsored team, and as such our uniform and

training equipment reflect the Speedo brand. Speedo is arguably the leader in

competitive swimming gear and has historically supplied athletes with high

quality suits including the acclaimed Lazar that was showcased for the first time

on a broad scale during the 2008 Olympic Trials, and then again at the 2008

Beijing Olympic Games. As a sponsor, Speedo provides racing suits to our

swimmers who qualify at the Junior National level and higher, and this provision

is made at no cost to the swimmer or family. Additionally, Speedo offers

discounts to our team members when various Speedo products are purchased

through Swim Suits West (our local Speedo distributor).

We encourage all athletes to be in uniform during all competitions. Our team

suit is solid navy blue with the green TNT logo affixed to the right rear of the

male suit, and center front on the female suit. Our suit remains the same from

one year to the next, as this helps establish a consistent image of our club. TNT

swim suits, parkas and warm-ups can be ordered through Swim Suits West in

Fresno by calling 1-800-877-8117. Norm Allington of Swim Suits West is also

present at various local swim meets throughout the year.

During competition, if the swimmer wears a swim cap, they are required to wear

the team cap. Our general team cap is navy blue with the green TNT logo on the

side. These caps are available from our team, or from Swim Suits West. Swimmers

who qualify and attend age group or senior championship meets may earn

a championship team cap which may alter the color scheme; however, the TNT

logo remains constant.

Maintaining a consistent team image contributes to developing a sense of pride

among all our swimmers during local swim meets and enhances the potential for

recognition that our swimmers may receive from college recruiters while at

higher levels of competition. Swimmers who have excelled in the past have provided

an avenue toward college recognition for those current TNT swimmers

who desire to make the sacrifices and commitment necessary to also receive that

recognition. The establishment of a uniformed image is considered important.

Just as no individual player on an NFL or NBA

team would ever consider taking the field or court

in individualized apparel, we also try to instill in

our youth the value of belonging to a team. Being

able to contribute as a team member is a skill that

transcends sports and is a trait that our young members

will need to adopt as they enter into professions

of adulthood.

Other team items that can be ordered

through the club include:

• Training Equipment

• Parka

• Swim Suit

• Team Bag

• Miscellaneous Merchandise

• Team Sweats (Warm-up)

WHAT TO DO AT MEETS

WARMING UP—The warm-up is an important habit to engage in while young. It’s

been noticed that when swimmers avoid warming up while young, they have difficulties

adopting the habit when they’re older. The Tulare group typically warms up

one hour before the start of the meet, or one hour prior to the estimated start of their

event. The warm-up is typically between 1500—1800 yards. Our top swimmers often

warm up again about 10-20 minutes prior to their race. As swimmers become

older and gain more muscle mass, the physiological and psychological adjustments

to the body resulting from an effective warm-up become more apparent.

CHECKING IN WITH YOUR COACH—As swimmers become older and more

experienced, they typically become more independent. As swimmers are still at the

developmental stages, it’s important to understand that the purpose of a swim meet

is more than simply a measure of performance, but is an integral part of the learning

process. Swimmers are strongly encouraged to check in with their coach both before

and after each swim. This gives the coach an opportunity to not only be advised as to

which heat and lane their swimmer will compete in, but more importantly it gives

the coach an opportunity to give last minute reminders about the race. Checking in

with the coach after the swim gives the swimmer and coach an opportunity to review

the race soon after it has taken place so that potential improvements may be addressed,

or accolades given. This practice of checking in with the coach is uniform

across all groups of TNT, and typically all swim teams that have age-group programs.

WARMING DOWN—Similar to the warm-up, the warm-down after the race becomes

more important as swimmers gain more muscle mass with age. It is imperative

that swimmers adopt the habit while they are young, and not rationalize reasons

not to warm down. Swimmers often warm-down between 500 to 1000 yards (or a

minimum of 15 minutes) after races, despite whether the race was a long race or a

short race.

Most club swim programs operate

within two or three training cycles,

and these are often bookmarked by

a culminating meet. Our cycles in

Tulare revolve around USA

Swimming Senior-level meets

such as Nationals, Junior’s and

Sectionals. The cycle helps develop

focus for swimmers by helping

them better identify the purpose of

their efforts. Training at 100%

intensity everyday in the year may

be detrimental to the long term

development of the athlete. Cycling

up, climaxing, and then cycling

down helps minimize the

negative effect of expecting top

performance all the time, and

gives swimmers time to physiologically

and psychologically recover.

NUTRUTION

Like athletes in many other sports, athletes in the sport of swimming are encouraged to

avoid sugar, and to focus on carbohydrates. Items such as candy and soda are the most

obvious items to avoid. However, realize that many foods that younger swimmers

might consider as carbohydrates might also contribute to the body processing sugar.

Not as obvious as candy and sodas, food items such as white pastas, white rice, white

bread, and white bagels also contribute to increased sugar intake, and therefore, may

cause havoc on the blood sugar levels of the body. Intake of these food items may

affect performance both at practice and at a swim meet.

Complex carbohydrates should account for 50% to 60% of an athletes intake. Even

though the body will use carbohydrates, fat and protein as sources of energy all at the

same time, depending on the intensity of the activity (as an example: how hard a practice

is), the body will use one source of energy (carbohydrates, fats or protein) more

than the others. When the activity is hard, the body tends to rely more on carbohydrates.

This is the primary reason why the carbohydrate intake is considered an important

factor when considering nutrition for athletes.

During intense activities, if the carbohydrate intake is not high enough, then the body

will rely on the fat intake for a secondary source of energy. If both the carbohydrate

and fat intake is not high enough (for example, if the body uses up all the carbohydrate

and fat that was put into it), then the body will use the protein as a source of energy.

This scenario is not optimal.

Protein is often the source that the body uses to build muscle, or repair itself. It is not a

good scenario if the body runs out of carbohydrates and fat, and now must rely on

protein for general energy use. When this happens, there is less protein in the system

for damage control and strength building. It’s important to maintain a healthy intake of

carbohydrates. If not, then an athlete may experience increased rates of injury, or they

might not realize a rate of increase in strength comparable to their peers. Diet becomes

even more important as the swimmer advances into training groups where the level of

physical expectation increases.

Examples of Complex Carbohydrates: whole grain breads, whole grain cereals,

whole wheat pasta, brown rice, sweet potatoes or beans.

Examples of Protein: The protein side of the diet should avoid fat and might include

skinless chicken or turkey, lean beef, eggs, fish (tuna, flounder, sole, cod), low

fat or skim milk, low-fat yogurt, or tofu.

Avoid saturated fats, hydrogenated oils or trans fats (basically manufactured fats) by

avoiding fatty foods and foods that use these types of fats in their preparation.

Finally, our swimmers should stay hydrated as an on-going basis (2-4 liters of water

per day) instead of waiting for the meet to begin drinking water. If drinking sports

drinks, avoid the ones that have sugar (6-8% carbohydrate concentration).

Better Idea

Water or low sugar sport drink

Whole wheat bagel

EXAMPLE FOODS

After a swimmer has engaged in physical activity, such as swimming a practice, he or

she has used up an amount of carbohydrates. These need to be replaced, and an optimal

window for replacement is within 30 minutes of the activity. A full meal should be consumed

within an hour of the physical activity.

The table below provides examples of food items, and is by no means an exhaustive list.

Low sugar fruit (strawberries, apples,

cantaloupe, blueberries, raspberries,

peaches), nuts, seeds

Whole grain: cereal, Pretzels, crackers

Low sugar & low fat Energy Bars (Kashi

TLT Bars, Odwalla Bars)

Bad Idea

Fruit juices

White flour based: bagel, goldfish,

cheese nips, etc

High sugar fruit (bananas, raisins, pineapple,

grapes)

Croissants, doughnuts, chips

High sugar energy bars (often Power

Bars)

Skinless chicken or turkey

Lean beef

Eggs

Fish (tuna, flounder, sole, cod)

Low fat or skim milk, low fat yogurt

Tofu

Bacon or sausage

High-fat beef or pork

Soda, cookies, candy, gummy bears, etc.

Hot dogs

Chicken nuggets, or fried chicken

UNITED STATES ANTI-DOPING AGENCY

As our swimmers reach a certain level of ability, they will be eligible to participate

in national-level senior meets. These meets often require our swimmers to sign a

“USA Swimming Waiver and Release Form” prior to participating in the meet. This

form indicates that the swimmer can be subject to drug testing.

Use of performance-enhancing drugs is clearly not acceptable, and the unethical

practice of achieving results based on these methods is obviously unacceptable.

However, athletes at times might use substances such as dietary or hydrating supplements

that would unknowingly result in a positive drug test. Even though many

products are available to the general public, and are not regulated, if use of these

products cause a positive drug test, swimmers may still be subject to sanctions.

USA Swimming along with the United States Anti-doping Agency (USADA) both

place the responsibility of the effects of using dietary or nutritional supplements directly

on the consumer in terms of doping violations. The following chart provides

risk considerations presented at three different levels:

An example of a seemingly innocent product would be Coca-Cola’s VitaminWater.

It had been reported in 2009 that the NCAA banned six of the flavors of VitaminWater

due to the potential of ingredients within these six flavors resulting in positive

drug tests. These included: Power-C, Energy, B-relaxed, Rescure, Vital-t and Balance.

Swimmers may also be prescribed medication that is banned from “in-competition,”

or “out-of-competition” situations. Athletes and families may refer to The United

States Anti Doping Agency website at http://www.globaldro.com/us-en/search/

search.aspx to search for the status of specific medication to determine if it is prohibited

during in-competition and/or out-of-competition situations.

ENTERING A MEET

Swimmers should feel free to approach their coach for suggestions on which meets to

enter, and which events to enter for the meet. There are various levels of meets that

swimmers will enter, and the process for entering meets varies depending on the location

of the meet and the caliber of the meet. This page explains some variations that

may occur using a context of meet types.

NATIONAL SENIOR MEETS (OLYMPIC TRIALS, SENIOR & JUNIOR NATIONALS, US OPEN,

GRAND PRIX and SECTIONALS)

Your coach will enter you in meets at these levels. He or she will communicate with

you regarding which events to enter, and the entry process is typically by way of the On

-line Meet Entry (OME) system through USA Swimming or by way of a data file.

Team travel for senior meets is encouraged so swimmers can begin to learn the complexities

associated with travel away from family. Travel reimbursement (room &

ground transportation) is often range in an amount from $150 to $300 per swimmer.

Travel expenses could include plane tickets, van rental, rooming, and meals. Travel

expenses for swimmers who have met a minimum time standard can be offset by Central

California Swimming by as much as $1,700 annually, reimbursed to the swimmer

and family. These funds are specifically for those individuals who aspire to reach elevated

levels of performance, and who may need the financial support to compete at

meets that reflect the level of competition necessary for this development.

REGIONAL SENIOR MEETS (WINTER INVITE, CCS AND OTHER LSC SENIOR MEETS)

Regional senior meets are entered by the athlete. If our swim team is not entering the

meet as a team, a paper entry (i.e. mailed in) is used for swim meets outside of Central

California Swimming (CCS). Different LSC’s use different entry cards; however, most

will still accept any type of entry card. Since senior meets often require a minimum

time standard to participate, the entry card usually includes space to list a “proof of

time.” Entry cards from the various LSC’s can be found on the Tulare TNT web page at

www.tritonswim.org. All swim meets in CCS, whether senior or age group, are entered

through the CCS website at http://www.centralcalswim.org/.

AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIP MEETS (AGE GROUP INVITATIONAL, FAR WESTERNS, WEST-

ERN ZONES)

Age group championship meets typically require an on-line entry method, or accept a

mail-in entry as an option. To enter age-group championship meets, swimmers will

either need to go to the web page of the Local Swim Committee (LSC) where the meet

is being held, or use the URL (web page address) that is provided on the meet sheet.

Swimmers cannot enter out-of-area age group championship meets through the CCS

webpage. Some of these meets may only be entered by the swimmer’s coach. For instances

where a team entry will be submitted, families will need to first register their

swimmer through our team’s Active site, prior to receiving an invitation to sign up for

the swim meet. The Active registration link can be found on the bottom of the Tulare

site at http://tritonswim.org/calendar.html.

LOCAL A-B-C AGE GROUP MEETS AND AGE GROUP MEETS OUTSIDE OF THE LSC

Local age group meets in CCS can only be entered through the CCS web page. Central

California Swimming (CCS) does not accept mailed-in entries from swimmers inside

the LSC. This includes Junior Olympics in CCS. Swimmers enter these meets on their

own. The CCS website used to enter a meet is: http://www.centralcalswim.org/

LSCPortal/MeetEntryTitleCC.asp. If swimmers wish to enter an age group (ABC) meet

outside of CCS, they cannot use the CCS webpage, but must either use a paper entry, or

go to the webpage of the LSC where the meet is hosted. Many age group meets outside

of CCS only take mailed-in entries.

ENTERING A CCS SWIM MEET

Members use the Central California Swimming (CCS) website for various reasons that

include signing up for a swim meets that are hosted within CCS. Swim meets that take

place outside CCS require a different means of entry. The Tulare group of TNT does

not use the option of allowing their members to register with USA Swimming through

the CCS website, although this option may be available within other programs of TNT.

The CCS website can be found at: http://www.centralcalswim.org/

To enter a meet in CCS:

Look for the “Swim Meets” tab near

the top of the home screen.

This is a pull-down menu that allows users options

62

BEING UNATTACHED and THE HIGH SCHOOL SEASON

UNATTACHED SWIMMERS

Swimmers who join a US Swim team for the first time may become attached

to that team immediately. If a swimmer decides to switch teams, that swimmer

may not represent the new team for 120 days (4 months). The swimmer may

not swim on relays or score points for either team during the time they are

unattached. When switching teams, swimmers must declare that intent in writing

to CCS by completing an Application for Transfer which can be found at

the Central California Swimming website at http://www.centralcalswim.org/

TheDrySide/Forms.asp. If this form is not completed, the swimmer will automatically

be assigned to their former team once the 120 days have elapsed.

While at swim meets, swimmers may typically un-attach from a team

(sometimes a fee is involved), but a swimmer is not typically allowed to attach

while at a meet. If a swimmer mistakenly enters a meet attached for whatever

reason, they may un-attach prior to their first event.

Swimmers who are in college must remain unattached from the club team until

their school term is over. High school swimming presents another reason

why many swimmers swim unattached.

HIGH SCHOOL SEASON

Swimming is unlike many other sports offered in high school. During the high

school season, swimmers may continue to train with a club program if that

allowance is permitted by the high school coach. However, the swimmer must

remain unattached at most club meets during the high school season. There

are some senior-level meets that CIF allows as exceptions to this rule. For

instance, swimmers who are competing at the Sectional level or beyond can

remain attached to their club team while at those specific meets. Swimmers

must return to the unattached status when they return to competition at club

meets that are of lower caliber than Sectionals.

The high school season for the club swimmer does not start when high school

practice starts, but is determined by the first high school meet at which the

swimmer participates. The club swimmer may remain attached to the club

team until they have participated in their first high school meet.

Violations related to representation of the club team may threaten the eligibility

to participate in high school swimming.

64 SCHOLASTIC ALL–AMERICA TEAM

USA Swimming has recognized Scholastic All-America swimmers as those

individuals who excel both in the sport of swimming as well as academically

in the classroom. Excellence in swimming is measured by achieving one or

more of the All America time standards during the qualifying period (July 1

—June 30), while academic excellence is measured by maintaining a grade

point average of 3.5 or higher after completing the 10th, 11th or 12th grade in

academic subjects only: History/Social Studies, English, Mathematics, Laboratory

Science, Foreign Language, Visual/Performing Arts, Computer Science.

Honor, Advance Placement and International Baccalaureate courses receive

an additional grade point.

The Scholastic All-American recognition process can be initiated by submitting

an on-line application. The submission deadline is typically August 1 st of

each year. This process requires submission by the athlete after collecting

necessary documents from the school. Club coaches are often not aware of the

academic performance of their athlete. Be sure to notify your coach or Phil

once a standard has been achieved so that the process may be monitored.

Individuals since 1999 who excelled both in the pool and in the classroom

include swimmers like Tara Kirk, Carly Geer, Natalie Coughlin, Margaret

Hoelzer, Kristen Caverly, Dana Kirk, Peter Marshall, Eric Shanteau, Peter

Vanderkaay, Ben Wildman-Tobriner, Brooke Bishop, Alex Vanderkaay, Tyler

McGill, Kate Ziegler, Chad La Tourette and Missy Franklin.

The on-line application process typically opens in May of each year, with an

application deadline set in August.

SOME HIGH SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS FOR COLLEGE

NCAA Division 1 and Division 2 programs define academic eligibility expectations of students

while they are in high school if they are interested in participating in sports while in college.

The lists below provide an outline of some of the minimum requirements in terms of courses

students are expected to complete during high school in order to maintain eligibility to participate

in sports during their first year of college. Swimmers should check with the Eligibility

Center since requirements at times change, including the D1 requirement that 10 core courses

be completed prior to the 7th semester beginning in August of 2016. For D1 and D2, students

must also establish a minimum SAT or ACT score depending on their grade point average.

NCAA DIVISION 1—Students must complete 16 core courses within 8 semesters while

in high school, and these courses must include:

4 years of English

3 years of math (Algebra 1 or higher)

2 years of natural or physical science (including 1 year of lab science if offered)

1 extra year of English, math, or natural or physical science

2 years of social science

4 years of extra core courses (from any category above, foreign language, or comparative

religion or philosophy)

Best SAT (verbal & math only) or ACT score used on a GPA sliding scale.

NCAA DIVISION 2—SAT (Reading & Math only) score of 820, or ACT (English, Math,

Reading & Science) summative score of 68. Students must complete 16 core courses with

a grade point average of 2.0 or higher, and these courses must include:

3 years of English

2 years of math (Algebra 1 or higher)

2 years of natural or physical science (including 1 year of lab science if offered by

your high school)

3 additional years of English, math, or natural or physical science

2 years of social science

4 years of extra core courses (from any category above, foreign language, or comparative

religion or philosophy)

NCAA DIVISION 3—Programs each maintain their own admission standards, and there

are no initial eligibility requirements. Our swimmers should contact Division 3 schools

directly for information pertaining to admission and eligibility. D3 schools typically do

not offer athletic scholarships.

NAIA—Students must meet two of the three following requirements:

• A minimum score of 18 on the ACT or 860 on the SAT (Critical Reading and Math

sections)

• A high school grade point average of 2.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale

• Graduate in the upper half of the high school graduating class.

High school students who are considering Division 1 or Division 2 programs are encouraged

to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center (formerly called the NCAA Clearinghouse)

before or during their junior year in high school. The link to further information on

NCAA requirements for both public school and home schooled students, as well as a link

to the NCAA Eligibility Center, can be found on our webpage at: http://

COLLEGE SWIMMING

There is an opportunity to swim in college for any swimmer who wishes to participate.

It’s not a question of whether I can swim in college. If the desire is there, then the question

is, “At what level of college swimming will I be able to participate in.”

Swimming for a college team, and traveling with a college team, is a memorable experience

regardless of the level in college. College swimming is divided into several categories:

Junior College, NAIA and NCAA. Each level has unique rules of recruitment, eligibility

requirements, and a championship-level culminating meet that swimmers must

qualify for.

Typically, swimmers have five years to use four years of eligibility in NCAA college

swimming. The clock starts the first year that the swimmer is in college and participates

in an organized competitive swimming event. Rules related to eligibility and recruiting

of swimmers are different between NAIA and NCAA divisions of swimming, and even

vary within the different NCAA divisions of swimming.

The college conferences that schools belong to include various Divisions. For instance,

the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference include schools from NCAA Division 1, Division

2, and Division 3 as well as NAIA.

When considering a college to attend, swimmers should consider several factors related

to the school, and not look solely at the swim program itself. SWIMMERS SHOULD

ALSO ENSURE THAT THEY DEVELOP STRONG STUDY HABITS AND

MAINTAIN A HIGH GRADE POINT AVERAGE WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL

AND THEIR FIRST YEARS IN COLLEGE. GRADES ARE A MAJOR FACTOR

IN THE RECRUITING PROCESS.

Many swimmers enter JUNIOR COLLEGE (JC) and compete at this college level.

These swimmers compete for two years, and many move on to complete their final

two years of eligibility at a four year institution. Associations (i.e. conferences) for the

JC include the National Junior College Athletic Association and the California Community

College Athletic Association (CCCAA). College of the Sequoias (COS) is in

the Central Valley Conference of the CCCAA along with Columbia, Fresno City,

Merced, Porterville, Reedley, Taft and West Hills. Their Championship meet is typically

held in April. Qualification for the Championship meet is not based on a time

standard, but rather on placing high enough at predetermined meets within the season.

The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

(NAIA) includes conferences such as: Independent, Bluegrass Mountain, Liberal Arts

and Pacific Collegiate Swim. The Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference, which may be

considered the most common conference for California athletes, includes programs

from NAIA (or Division 4) as well as NCAA Division schools. California Division 4

colleges in this conference include: Azuza Pacific, Biola (La Mirada), California Baptist

(Riverside),

CSU East Bay (Hayward) and Soka (Irvine). Many of these schools are private

schools.

NAIA schools have additional requirements for entering freshman to participate in

athletics when compared to NCAA schools. Entering freshman must meet two of the

three following requirements:

• A minimum score of 18 on the ACT or 860 on the SAT (Critical Reading and

Math sections)

• A high school grade point average of 2.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale

• Graduate in the upper half of the high school graduating class

NAIA Championships are typically held in March.

NCAA (Division 1-3)

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) schools are categorized into

three divisions: Division 1 (D1), Division 2 (D2) and Division 3 (D3). Each division

has their National or Championship meet where qualifying automatically for the meet

requires an “A-cut.” There are two time standards for NCAA Championships, the A

cut and the B cut. The A cut is an automatic cut and the B cut is a consideration time.

Anyone who achieves an A cut is eligible to swim an event where they achieved a B

cut. Often a swimmer will qualify with an “A” relay cut, and then swim their B

events.

Coaches recruiting for NCAA schools cannot regularly communicate with swimmers

until the summer following their junior year of high school. Athletes being recruited

to an NCAA school are allowed to take five recruiting trips after July 1st following

their junior year in high school. Consider taking unofficial visits to closer schools,

and the official recruiting trips to schools that are farther away. If the college is interested

in the swimmer, they will cover the expense of the recruiting trip.

One of the primary considerations among recruiters are high school grades and the

general academic ability of the swimmer. If a swimmer is awarded a scholarship, and

then becomes ineligible while in college, the college team has lost a position on the

team. The number of scholarships a team may provide at times is dependent on the

average grade point of the team. Swimmers are expected to maintain a good grade

point average while in college. If high enough, grades during the first year provides a

buffer for the remaining years.

Division 1 This level of collegiate swimming is the most competitive. Some conferences

in this division include: Big West, Western Athletic and Pacific-10. Colleges that

our swimmers are familiar with in these conferences include: Auburn, Cal Berkley, Cal

Poly, CSU Bakersfield, CSU Fresno, Kentucky, Louisiana, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC

Santa Barbara, UOP, UCLA, USC, Stanford, and University of Texas to name a few.

See “College Championship Meet Time Standards” in this handbook for examples of

time standards for Division 1 Schools. Long course qualifying times for D-1 schools

are often faster than the Olympic Trial time standards.

Division 2 Schools on the west coast from the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference in

Division 2 include CSU San Diego, Fresno Pacific, Alaska-Fairbanks and Seattle University.

Division 2 Nationals are typically held in March. Drury University of Springfield,

Missouri is often the predominant Division 2 swimming school.

See “College Championship Meet Time Standards” in this handbook for examples of

time standards for Division 1 Schools. Long course qualifying times for D-2 schools

are often faster than the Olympic Trial time standards.

Division 3 Schools from the Pacific Coast Conference in Division 3 include CSU Santa

Cruz and Chapman (in Orange, CA). Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic

Conference (SCIAC) schools that are Division 3 include California Lutheran

(Thousand Oaks), Claremont Mudd-Scripts (CMS) College, La Verne, Occidental

(Los Angeles), Pamona-Pitzer, Redlands and Whittier.

The SCIAC Conference Championships are typically held in February. Top ranked

schools for the SCIAC include CMS, Redlands and Pamona-Pitzer for both men’s and

women’s swimming. Division 3 Championships are typically held in March, and Kenyon

College in Gambier, Ohio is among the top competitors in both Men’s and women’s

swimming at the D-3 level.

COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIP MEET TIME STANDARDS

Despite whether the college program is in the NCAA Division 1, 2 or 3, or whether the

program is an NAIA program, one primary mission of the vast majority of programs is to

become a successful team. This success is often measured by the athletes that perform at

their respective conference or national championships. How much an individual athlete can

contribute to the overall college team’s success at their conference or national meet is an

important factor that a college coach must consider when recruiting prospective athletes.

Although qualifying for a national collegiate championship meet may not guarantee that

the swimmer will score for their school, if a club swimmer enters college close to the national

A-cut, there is a greater likelihood that the prospective swimmer could move into a

scoring position within one or two years after entering college. The time standards below

provide our club swimmers with ideas as to times that might attract the attention of schools

at the NCAA Division 1, Division 2, Division 3 and NAIA levels. National Division 1 time

standards can only be achieved in a short course pool, either yards or meters. Long course

times are not considered. Only short course yard times are listed below.

2016 ALL TIME TNT TOP 100 TIME STANDARDS

TNT maintains a database of All-Time Top 100 times per event in each age group.

Like team records, these times are an accumulation of performances by swimmers

from any affiliate program of TNT (Bakersfield, Fig Garden, Hanford, Porterville,

Selma, Tulare or Visalia). This page lists the minimum time (100 th place time) from

the previous year. The actual updated list can be accessed through our web page at

www.tritonswim.org under the PERFORMANCE tab. Once swimmers have successfully

attained a position on the list, they may track their progression with respect

to other swimmers who have come before them and who may have gone on to national

and collegiate levels of swimming. Highlights in yellow indicate events where

the 100 th place time remained unchanged (suggesting no new times were listed from

the preceding year). Any highlights in red would suggest two or more years of no

change in the event.

A FINAL NOTE

(but only for those who dare to strive for the highest level of achievement)

I’d like to wish the very best to all those who accept and

embrace the challenges that come with the quest for success.

Achievement of success mandates a level of commitment

from all individuals who seek it. Those committed to

the successful outcome are individuals who can be identified

by certain characteristics, traits and habits that truly

separate themselves from the general population. These

are the individual athletes who sacrifice comfort and replace

it with discomfort. These are the individual athletes

who are not dissuaded by soreness, and who see fatigue as

the front door to future success that many others will never

enter. These are the task and goal oriented individuals who

are able to maintain a consistent level of commitment to

the priorities they have earnestly established. These are the

individuals who have identified the differences between ordinary

and “extra”-ordinary levels of commitment, and

who are willing to do the “extra” in order to reach the extraordinary

level of performance.
