KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT
FRONTS HOPE TO FEND OFF THE ATTACK
KINGSTON AND OWEN SOUND BATTLE FOR MUCH NEEDED POINTS
positive to facing a team from the opposite conference
in the OHL is not having to worry about
A
giving up the dreaded overtime point to the opposition.
With both teams battling for a playoff spot within
their own Conference but not battling each other
in the standings, we could see both teams play it
safe in a close game to ensure earning at least a
point. While the win is important, points are at a
premium now that the calendar has turned to 2020.
Kingston is proving to be an extremely streaky
team this season. After winning just once in their
first 19 games, the Frontenacs went on an exciting
8-2 run over their next ten. Now they find themselves
on another downswing winning 2 of their last
8. With the way they have been streaking, a win
tonight over the Attack could be the start of a much
needed positive streak to help push the Frontenacs
towards the playoffs.
Owen Sound have been a much more consistent
team. They have floated around the .500 mark for
the majority of the season. Entering play in Peterborough
last night, they were 4-5-0-1 in their past
10 games making them 17-15-3-2 for the season.
They had scored 137 goals while giving up 129.
With their numbers being so similar on both sides,
it would be fair to assume that tonight’s game could
be decided by a single goal.
This will be the final meeting of the season between
Kingston and Owen Sound. The Frontenacs
took the only other meeting by a 3-1 score on November
16 in Owen Sound. That game was the start
of their 8 wins in 10 games run. They will look to start
a similar streak against the same team tonight. KF

At the 2019 Ontario Hockey League Priority
Selection, the Kingston Frontenacs selected
Maddox Callens 43rd overall. They were looking
for a player that could play a strong physical game
while being able to provide some desired offence.
The third-round selection, now halfway through his
rookie season, has shown he’s capable of not only
bringing these attributes on the ice but projects to
be a pivotal force for Kingston over the next few
years.
The Langton, ON native was one of four
selections Kingston made last summer that play on
the current roster setting the foundation for a great
young rookie corps with Shane Wright, Francesco
Arcuri, and Braden Haché joining the soon-tobe
17-year-old (Feb. 11). With a solid leadership
group in Jakob Brahaney, Jake Murray, and Nick
King towing the veteran side of the team, it’s a great
season for Callens to gain valuable experience early
in his young OHL career.
As Wright did, Callens played against players
up a level in age during the 2017-18 season as a
bantam-aged player in the Alliance Minor Midget
League with the Brantford 99ers AAA program. The
left-winger was a point-per-game player scoring 15
goals and 33 points in 33 games and added six
points in the playoffs helping Brantford win a league
title. Impressive for a club that had won only seven
times the previous season. He also played with the
16
Oshawa Selects U15 squad teaming up with Shane
Wright.
In 33 games during 2018-19, he followed up
with a 25 goal and 52 point season leading the team
in scoring and helping guide the 99ers to a second
straight Alliance Championship where he was a
force in the playoffs with 10 goals and 17 points in
14 games. Kingston selected his teammate Jonah
Cochrane with the 224th selection last summer as
well.
Signing his OHL contract on May 24, he
appeared in his first preseason game on Aug 30
at home versus Oshawa registering an assist. He
added a goal in his third game to finish with two
points in four games. He made his OHL regularseason
debut on Sep 20 on the opening night of
the season, again against Oshawa. In Sarnia on Oct
20, he displayed signs of his offensive game with
a nice assist to set up a Dawson Baker goal for his
first point in the OHL.
Callens is a gritty forward who is not afraid to
get to the net. He scored his first career goal
against the Peterborough Petes on Nov 8 during
the Remembrance Day game tipping a point-shot
taken by Jakob Brahaney. Showing off his always
exuberant energy with a goal-celly that made the
rounds on social media it’s easy to see the energy he
brings to the team. Winning the fan-voted Hardest
Worker award has shown he is fast becoming a
favourite in his new town.
A strong skater, Callens enjoys the physical
game and with a strong forechecking style, his
OFFICIAL GAME DAY MAGAZINE, VOLUME 47, ISSUE 17
BILLY KIMMERLY
efforts have helped produce goals without assists.
He is a multi-threat forward capable of making
a nice pass or shelving a shot top-corner but his
most valuable asset is being a solid 200-foot player
responsible in his own end as well. Coach Kurtis
Foster says:” He’s just a smart player you count
on in many situations and I’d expect to see greater
things from him.”
A multi-sport athlete, Maddox enjoys golf
and track coming from an athletic family. An
accomplished golfer himself, his brother Peyton
would take the cake on that one. He is currently
a member of the NCAA’s Nevada Wolfpack golf
team winning the Golf Ontario’s Men’s Match Play
Championships last summer and capturing the
2016 Ontario Junior Boys Championship. KF
