CHRISTINA KARAM PAINTER
In the spring of 2018, we decided to put our Walnut
Hills condo up for sale. It was then that we also
decided to pursue something that has been on our
hearts for a while– live abroad for a long period
of time. This wasn’t a foreign concept to us as we
lived in South Africa for five months back in 2015.
Travel and exploration have always been shared
values for us as a couple. We love everything about
it: food, culture, history, architecture, and even the
car-free lifestyle. It’s no wonder why we decided
to do it again, only this time we have two toddlers
in-tow.
That didn’t stop us. Our desire to live in other
countries exceeded the intimidation of traveling
abroad for six months with a one and three year
old. We initially planned on taking a transatlantic
cruise to Barcelona to get our “sabbatical” off
on a relaxing point. We planned to get into the
mindset of the slower life while on the ship but
unfortunately it was damaged during a repair
two weeks prior to our departure date. That
unexpected cancellation was good practice for
many more unforeseen changes to come. We
decided to continue with the trip only to fly abroad
and change a few things around. Our trip would
start in Carcassonne, France and move east
through Lucca, Italy, Umbria, Split and Dubrovnik
Croatia, Montenegro, Tirana, Albania, Athens,
Greece, and possibly Turkey.
While in some ways, our life is simpler with fewer
possessions, no commuting, schedule flexibility,
etc., there has been no shortage of new stressors
to manage on a daily basis. But it’s strengthening
us as individuals and parents. We’re taking in the
small things– stopping more often, and having
slower days. Brian is working as an independent
consultant in analytics while I blog and manage
my personal chef business from afar.
EPIPHANY DAVIS
Epiphany just moved back home after 12 years performing as a dancer and
actor in New York City. Last year she founded the event company, Have an
Epiphany, LLC. They create custom events for any type of party. Now based
out of Cincinnati, Have an Epiphany is ready to take on Ohio events. www.
EMILY GULBRANSEN
On April 29, Ted and Emily got engaged while traveling in Iceland. Ted is
originally from Boulder, Colorado and they have been together for four years.
They are going to get married on October 9, 2020 in Cincinnati and can’t
wait to start this next chapter of their lives.
We know that our decision to live a bit of
retirement early in life is seen as irresponsible to
some; perhaps we can’t shake the mantra from
our favorite CHCA in-class movie, The Dead
Poet Society, “Carpe diem”. We’re not promised
anything, and too many times we’ve heard people
say, “I wish I did more when I was younger and in
better health.” Both of us are used to working full
or part-time and leading busier schedules. It was
time for us to hit pause, and experience parenting
in other countries.
GRACE SCHULER SPENCER
Grace and her husband Jonathan welcomed their first baby, Hudson Bruce
Spencer, at 8:14 AM on September 11, 2018 weighing 8lbs 2oz and 20.5
inches long. He has brought such joy and delight to their lives!
Our kids have been tremendously adaptable in
the newness of everything. Regardless, they’re still
two very young toddlers who keep us on our toes,
especially in the small spaces of our apartments.
Though they are too young to remember this
experience, we believe it will shape us as parents,
and them as individuals. We consider ourselves
incredibly blessed to be on this adventure.
