Inquire about the coffee and listen to the stories of directtrade
coffee beans and how the farmers benefit. Purchase
a drink and hear the students request the empty cup be
brought back so it can be composted.
The momentum from the Food Symposium impacted
not only the coffee bar, but also the very essence of the
Business Entrepreneurship Program at CHCA. This year,
the program has taken on the school garden situated
between the EBL campus and Founders’—generously
donated by the O’Brien family in 2014, the garden had
grown over and was in need of maintenance. In the spirit
of local food and understanding the importance of the
seed, the garden was restored to its growing potential and
is now functioning as an innovative outdoor classroom for
all CHCA students. The PK-4 class planted radish seeds in
the fall only to harvest them five weeks later. The second
graders saw the seeds they started in their classroom move
to the garden’s raised beds. One of the third grade classes
visited the garden to harvest snap peas and walk through
the vineyard.
And the story grows.
Next year will bring about incredible additions for business
entrepreneurship at the school—chief among these will be
the establishment of a certificate program for upper school
students which will be awarded to graduating students who
have completed several internships at the various studentrun
businesses along with a set course of study. This
will include a newly designed Upper School class called
“Perspectives in Entrepreneurship and Sustainability” in
which community leaders and experts will be engaged to
bring topics of critical interest to the campus in a TED talk
format.
In addition to the Upper School offerings, students
in all grades at all campuses will be introduced to
entrepreneurial involvement at their respective age levels.
As the number of student-operated businesses increases,
so too does the number of interested students. Included
within the entrepreneurship umbrella will be an increased
emphasis on sustainability at the school with a goal to
reduce food waste, raise awareness about composting, and
create a school wellness program to bring about a higher
level of nutritional education. This will be paired with
future awareness events in the vein of last spring’s Food
Symposium.
It goes without saying that exciting happenings are
underway in all campuses of the school. It goes without
saying that The Leaning Eagle Coffee Bar is just the
beginning. It goes without saying that there are stories
brewing in our cups and growing in our gardens.
