Road closure - Station Hill, Lynton 

Work will be taking place on Station Hill, Lynton 

starting 6 January 2020. Work will be carried out 

under a full road closure but when safe it will be 

reduced to two-way traffic lights. 

The work will run until the start of April 2020. 

What are we doing? 

Along Station Hill in Lynton there is a section of 

highway (40 meters) which is showing serious signs 

of cracking and has deteriorated over time. No 

existing edge support to the carriageway has been 

identified and in addition, there is no suitable road 

restraint system in place to protect vehicles from the 

road edge. To repair the carriageway and provide long-lasting support a mass 

concrete retaining wall will be constructed, which will be finished with a masonry 

parapet to protect vehicles from the steep bank below. Resurfacing of the 

highway will also be carried out. 

Traffic management 

The traffic management will be in the form of a full road closure which will be in 

place 24/7. This road closure will be in action for much of the scheme to 

safeguard both the contractor and members of the public. 

However, if possible, we may consider the use of two-way traffic lights to allow 

the road to be reopened earlier than anticipated. 

Diversion routes 

For this closure we have provided one diversion route for both a light vehicle and 

HGV (heavy goods vehicle) to use. Both diversion routes (Station Hill and B3234) 

can be found on one.network which will display the exact routes. Please note 

one.network requires you to create an account to view future and proposed work. 

Can I claim compensation? 

There is no legal obligation or express statutory authority that enables Devon 

County Council to compensate for increased costs or any financial loss suffered 

as a result of the traffic management in place. While every effort is made to 

inconvenience the public as little as possible there are times when however 

regrettable interruptions cannot be avoided. If you would like any further

Some handy travel apps 

Dear Readers. 

Welcome to 2020! I hope you had an exciting Christmas with lots of techy items. 

Having been away over Christmas I thought it might be a good time to look at my top 

four free and paid for travel apps. 

SkyScanner First we have to find some flights. This fab app can locate not only the 

flight times and prices but can also with a little filtering, show you the cheapest 

flights for the whole month. This is useful if you have holiday to take and aren't sure 

when would be best. 

Kayak Similar to booking.com and hotels.com but combined power. Great for 

searching for last minutes breaks as well as looking for train prices. All in one 

please! 

FlightRadar24 There are two versions. One is free and limited and the other for just 

a few pounds is an upgrade to the all singing, all dancing app. The full version will 

allow you to point your camera at a plane in the sky for it to be identified (useful if 

you want to see which plane is coming in to land and if it’s time to go to the airport), 

live arrivals and departure boards, plane type, and my favourite is where the aircraft 

is and how fast it is going! 

Google Translate I know this seems obvious but did you know the translate app can 

also translate signs on the fly? I was in Madrid a few months back and although my 

Spanish is reasonable I could not for the life of me understand a sign at the station. 

Point the camera and instantly you know what the sign is about. The added ‘bonus’ 

for Google Translate is firstly you can download a dictionary for offline translations 

(if you don’t mind typing things in) and secondly with a data connection you can also 

voice translate. It will not only translate and dictate in the required language but will 

also reverse translate to you into English. That’s very handy!

There are two types of trips by minibus operating 

from Lynton: 

HALF-DAY TRIPS TO A VARIETY OF LOCATIONS 

ACROSS DEVON & SOMERSET 

These are on alternate Thursdays - £7 per person. 

These trips are designed for those unable to get 

out easily, but are open to all on a first come, first 

served basis. 

The minibus leaves Lynton Town Hall @ 9am 

sharp, returning for 2pm, allowing roughly three 

hours at our chosen destination.

complement to ensure these trips remain

Say no to norovirus this winter 

Norovirus, also called the "winter vomiting bug", is a 

stomach bug that causes vomiting and diarrhoea. It can be 

very unpleasant, but usually goes away in about 2 days. 

This infection can live on hard surfaces for weeks and spreads 

very quickly through environments where lots of people are 

mingling closely, such as hospitals, schools and nurseries. 

Alcohol or antibacterial hand gels are a popular choice for 

people wanting to protect themselves from the bugs that circulate during winter. However most 

people don’t realise that hand gels are NOT an effective protection against this common sickness 

bug. 

The best way to protect yourself and others from catching this unpleasant sickness bug is simply 

to wash your hands thoroughly with warm soapy water, and to keep the environment you live and 

work in clean. 

Have you had your flu jab yet? 

It takes between 10 and 14 days for your immune system 

to respond fully after you have had the flu vaccine, which is 

why it is important to have your vaccine early in the flu 

season. 

For most people flu will clear up on its own relatively 

quickly, but for some people, including over 65s, pregnant 

women or people with underlying health conditions, it can 

be more serious. The flu vaccine is available on the NHS for:

Save your broken possessions for UK’s largest-ever 

repair café 

Devon’s residents are being urged to hang on to 

their broken possessions after the Christmas 

holidays so they can be fixed at what promises to 

be the largest repair café ever held. 

The Big Fix 2020 will be held on Saturday February 

15, and will see up to 109 repair cafés across the 

UK being held simultaneously. 

The national event is being coordinated by Devon County Council and follows the 

success of The Big Fix last year when volunteers broke the record for the number of 

items repaired at a single repair café. 

Both events are examples of Devon County Council’s commitment to ensure that 

Devon becomes a net-zero county. 

Repair cafés are community events where skilled volunteer fixers donate their time 

once a month to help members of their local community fix broken household objects. 

Everything from sewing, electrical items, furniture repairs and mechanical issues can 

be covered for a small donation towards the costs of the repair café. These are often 

items which people may not be able to afford to get fixed or not sure how to do it 

themselves and are brought back to life and saved from the bin. 

Repair cafés also have a second, equally valuable role as meeting places where 

anybody can sit down and have a chat. 

Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure 

and Waste said: “Climate concerns are causing more people to look at the way they 

live and ask what can I do to help the environment? One way is to recycle more, reuse 

more and repair more. Extending the life of a hairdryer, repairing a garment or 

upcycling a sofa is something everybody can do to help the environment. And it saves 

you money. Buying new every time something breaks or gets old simply isn’t 

sustainable.”

Feeding birds in winter Birds may have 

difficulty finding normal food in winter. To 

help them stay strong leave out extra food. 

Helping badgers in severe weather Badgers 

don't hibernate but do sleep through most of 

the severe weather. Nibbles such as lightly 

cooked meats, cheese, peanuts and fruit 

would be welcome. 

Help stock a squirrel's store Squirrels store 

food to eat when food is scarce. To help 

squirrels offer hazelnuts, walnuts and 

almonds, plus chopped apple, beans, 

carrots or spinach. 

Melting frozen ponds Toxic gases can build 

up in frozen ponds killing fish or frogs which 

may be hiding at the bottom. If you have a 

pond check it every day for ice.

Operation Snap is a secure online facility which allows submissions of video and photographic evidence 

relating to driving incidents that members of the public have witnessed. Operation Snap (Dashcam 

footage) will investigate road traffic offences such as dangerous driving, driving without due care and 

attention, careless driving, using a mobile phone handheld, not wearing a seat belt, contravening a red 

traffic light and contravening solid white lines, however this is not an exhaustive list. If you have captured 

a driving offence on your dashcam or other digital device, you can send it to the police simply, quickly 

and securely through Operation Snap. You need to be 18 years old or over, able to supply the registration 

mark of the offending vehicle and be willing to sign a witness statement and possibly appear in court.

As evening approached near Glenthorne 

A short story in four parts 

written by Richard Small, a North Devon author 

He parked his car on the desolate earth lay-by just before County Gate and 

set off on foot in search of adventure. 

His mind was taken by a sign that read, ‘Site of ancient Barrow’. It took 

longer than anticipated but he eventually found the site and stood on a high point 

and enjoyed the commanding view of the valleys around, just as they who built it 

must have done. 

His plan was changing all the time but he was enjoying it all so much, the 

view, the air, the sunshine. . . that raw connection with nature itself. He decided to 

walk further afield and downhill towards the beach some one mile distant. At first 

his way was barred by thick undergrowth and fences but he eventually found a 

suitable track. 

His effort was rewarded. Glenthorne beach was surreally beautiful and 

obviously rarely visited. He rested a while, looking at patterns in the stones and the 

antics of a friendly Robin. Perhaps he’d stayed too long but it was such a wonderful 

day and he was sure he could easily retrace his steps. It was a relentless but 

steady 3,000 feet climb back to the road where he had earlier abandoned his car. 

First he had to climb over a fallen tree and land slip that blocked the path and had 

nearly kept him from reaching the beach. It was a climb for a younger man than he 

but the day was good and there seemed a touch of misplaced youth in his being. 

So far so good, he’d taken a track which he believed would meet up with the 

one he’d used for the descent. He felt he’d reached about a third of the way but a 

quick glance at the lowering sun told him he’d better get on with it, no more dilly 

dallying, time for some serious walking. 

After a few minutes, he stopped to catch his breath and looked back to view 

his progress. Horror of horrors, he was on the wrong track, he was climbing on the 

wrong side of the wooded valley … he needed to be the other side, on the far hill, 

damn it all. 

With misplaced confidence exceeding questionable ability, he decided to cut 

across country through the woods, taking a straight line for where he thought he’d 

find his car. It was to turn out to be one of life’s more regrettable decisions.

Austell Brewery. Onwards to our Irish Shamrock bar where 

you will be met with a pint of Guinness before you 

touchdown at the Rugby Club once more. Back at Club 

you will finish with another celebratory pint of beer and a 

choice of hot buffet, including curry, before watching the 

Six Nations England v Ireland game on the big screen! 

You will also receive a branded beanie to wear during the walk to show your solidarity for 

local men being cared for by North Devon Hospice.

Christ Church, Parracombe 

Christmas Tree Festival A Christmas Tree Festival was 

held in Christ Church, Parracombe over three days during the 

second weekend of December. Trees were sponsored and 

decorated, some by individuals and families, but also by some 

local businesses and groups. There were also produce stalls 

from local suppliers selling Christmas gifts and handmade 

cards, honey and plants. Combined proceeds from sponsorship 

of the trees and donations from the stalls raised a total of just over £670. Although the 

weather probably reduced the numbers visiting, for those there it was an enjoyable weekend. 

Nine Lessons and Carols Christ Church welcomed a very large congregation who had 

defied the weather to attend the annual service of Nine 

Lessons and Carols. Late comers had difficulty finding a seat 

and for some it was standing room only. Singing was 

supported by the Christmas Choir who opened the service in 

the traditional way with the first verse of Once in Royal 

David's City and later sang three solo pieces including a lively 

version of Mary's Boy Child - think Boney M! - Thank you to all 

members of the choir and their director/conductor Bish Muir for their support and many hours 

rehearsal. Many of the readings were given by pupils of West Exmoor Federation, thank you to 

the children and their headteacher, Jane Peacock. Refreshments were served by members of 

the PCC and friends, for which thanks. Service was conducted by Rev Samantha and the 

organist was Roger Martin. Proceeds from the collection were shared with Clarity North Devon, 

a charity supporting young people with mental health problems, and Children's Hospice South 

West. 

Christ Church welcomed the Exmoor Carolers for an 

evening of music and song. At the start of the evening we were 

told that John Wesley would encourage his congregations to 

"sing lustily" and we should do the same. Indeed, there was 

enthusiastic encouragement of audience participation by their 

leader and musical director, Rupert Kirby. Each item was 

introduced by one of the Carolers who explained the origin of 

the carol and how the Carolers came to add it to their programme. At the end of the evening, 

Reverend Samantha thanked the group and said that such events were an important part of 

the Christmas programme and the fund raising helped with maintenance costs of small village 

churches. Proceeds from the sale of cd’s and the raffle were donated to the Carolers' chosen 

charities, this year Over and Above Hospital Charity, See Hear Centre and 

@www.ageconcernbarnstaple.org.uk. The evening proceeds of the raffle were £142. Thank 

you to the Carolers, all those who attended and supported, and members of the PCC for 

organising the refreshments.
