Caro Paolo,
Riccarda e Stefano Contini
Dear Paolo,
The irony, the geniality and the deviousness of your work impressed us from the moment we first met. So much so, that we decided to
make you part of the “Contini Team”. Now with this exhibition we want to make our choice known to art lovers, confidant that your works
will elicit the same excitement that we felt.
Your work brilliantly celebrates the society in which we live and your aesthetic capability bemuses us with its originality and humor.
Particularly captivating in this exhibition is the Biocloning project, in which you propose a portrait to collectors, in the true sense of the
word: not a simple photographic reproduction, but thanks to your artistic talent, you clone the subjects and interpret their passions,
memories and spaces to create a portrait that tells the story of their emotions.
We are certain that this exhibition will be receive the recognition that it deserves from the public.
With great esteem,
Riccarda and Stefano Contini
destinata a produrre stupore e meraviglia.
ectoplasmatica in Cloning Fallen Angel.
sono protagoniste indiscusse e quanto mai seducenti giovani donne o pin-up spesso vestite in abiti succinti o seminude secondo i canoni

To Clone the World
“I am large, I contain multitudes”, sang Walt Whitman and many decades later Fernando Pessoa apparently gave him an answer, “I
feel multiple. I multiplied myself to feel myself, to feel myself I had to feel everything…” If in poetry, in art and in literature born from a
consumerist dominion, the plurality of nature and personality that each of us preserves within ourselves was an undeniable, though
often problematical asset. From the 1960s to the twentieth century, this multiplicity flattened out with mass serialization, with crystalized
clonation. In the art world, the first and highest defender of identity anesthetization was Andy Warhol.
No artist of the past century has equaled his capacity to make glamour appear to be superficial while at the same time making life,
death, consumerism and the desire to be seen, so magnetically unnerving. “How can you say one style is better than another?” he
loved to affirm. “It’s this style or that style, this or that image of man – but that really doesn’t make any difference.” Yet, notwithstanding
this declared indifference, Warhol was able to deeply understand the birth of a serial society of mass production, narcissistic and
consumeristic through and through. And he more that anyone was an inexhaustible devourer of images, a serial killer of a glance, as
proven in his colorful and legendary portraits of Hollywood stars faces multiplied in series, clonations yet at the same time joyous and
unnerving. Warhol’s creative elaboration is difficult to understand without knowing the germinal but decisive phase of the 1950s, with
its debut into commercial art and illustrations for prestigious magazines as well as graphics for advertising. Precisely, Warhol and the
strategies for advertising communication that followed are fundamental for understanding the work of Paolo Vegas, which from the
first impact is undoubtedly attractive, seductive, and glossy yet never idly deposited on the surface of things. In that sense - as seen
with the exhaustive exhibition in the Contini Gallery in Cortina d’Ampezzo that brings together a series of various works realized in the
past decade – his most notable and compelling invention is the clonation of photographic subjects. With a meticulous implementation
recently further perfected, it is reminiscent also of the spectacular visionary and neo-Baroque post-Pop Art works of David LaChapelle.
Not by chance Vegas gives life to his own works by utilizing the format of an advertising set, choosing the place, the cast, the style and
the script giving a location and telling a story that is suspended between reality and a dreamy dimension, in a constant triumph of
excessiveness. A fundamental phase is the post-production work in which Vegas mounts (in a cinematographic-like way) his hyperbolic
visual narration, destined to create stupor and wonder. If today it has become increasingly more difficult – but not impossible – to invent
new images rooted in contemporary interiority, there is a growing tendency as Vegas demonstrates, to assemble with the individuation
of unforeseen and unedited bonds that reconnect or weave threads from which unedited contexts are created. In the case of this artist,
it would be limiting to speak of pure and simple photographs because his works are actually collages on lambda prints, which surprisingly
encompass real objects. A materialization of images is present in each single work (the red ribbon in “Cloning Cars”, the purse in “Cloning
in the Soybean Meal” or the scarf in “Cloning Anne with Foulard”…and I could name many more). Often tied to preferences, to passions,
to memories and experiences of the protagonists, they are staged and cloned in what Vegas calls BioCloning. In a conceptual reflection
on the relationship between reality and imagery, between reality and illusion, the object (a tyrannical dominator of our consumeristic
life and continuously more artificial), becomes a sort of alter ego of the subject portrayed and its exclusive role of being disposable is
somehow purified. On a critical aspect (which deep down is not lacking in the works of the artist), one could almost say that we ourselves
are those objects that we use and want. Not by chance, and to underline an osmosis that continues to be a strong link between people
and things, the exhibition is entitled “Stories of People and Things”.
Furthermore, Vegas demonstrates his capability of seeing ordinary things in an extraordinary way, in the wake of a Surrealist inheritance,
which also transmits to us this renewed open-mindedness: take for example, the delicate and mysterious angelic or ectoplasmic
appearance in “Cloning Fallen Angel”. In a certain way, our artist could claim the reflections of Jaroslaw Suchan as his own, “Works of art
can act as a sort of crack in the monolith of imagery that comes to us as a possibly unique image from our era. A work of art can disturb
the way we normally see and think about the world. I think that the principal role of art is to change the mindset, the way in which we
think and see the world. This can be the beginning of a possible change. There is an enormous deficit of imagination; our way of thinking
today is very conventional. What we desperately need now is the courage to go beyond, to surpass limits.”
Vegas is capable of visualizing a world in perennial movement, a sort of frenetic choreography of contemporary life, where scientific
studies have made huge steps in the field of clonation, often with many disturbing aspects. Moreover, the artist – with entertaining and
humorous irony and a wink of the eye – makes secret dreams come true to all those who would like to see themselves split in two or
multiplied in order to accomplish the innumerable tasks that tyrannically affect our daily lives. In this overwhelming show, the undisputed
protagonists are the seductive young pin-up models often dressed in provocative clothing or semi-nude according to the canons of
advertising aimed at arousing the eruption of desire in the male audience. However, the caricatural accentuation and the paroxysm
of poses and demeanor created by Vegas actually make us reflect on the commercialization of the female body and erotic images
that bombard us daily. Vegas could therefore agree with the ideas of Maurizio Cattelan, who though benefited from marketing and
communication strategies, also understood that “we live in the empire of marketing, spectacle and seduction so one of the roles of
artists and curators is to deconstruct those strategies, to resist their logic, to use them, and/or find new means of activism against them.”
In Vegas’ works from the past two years, a renewed vigor emerges towards his visionary and imaginative vocation, reinforced by chromatic
(almost pictorial) effects which can be seen in “Marilyn in Korea 1954”, “Venezia”, Recycled Plastic in Yellow”, “Blue Harmony” and
“Ichthys” to name a few. In conclusion, the ideal dialogues and the praises made by Vegas to immortal geniuses such as Michelangelo,
Van Gogh and Hopper, are not to be overlooked. As stated by Arshile Gorky, our artist is also well aware that “the tradition of art is the
group dance of beauty and pathos in which the many individual centuries join in the effort and they communicate their particular
contributions to the whole event; each one of them loses significance if the circle of hands is broken. For this reason I feel that tradition,
or rather the bond with past centuries and the present, is so important for art. The soloist can emerge only after having participated in
the group dance”

Stories of People and Things
Things.
“Stories of People and Things”. Mentre

Stories of People and Things
Since 2014, the Contini Art Gallery has represented me; this opportunity has allowed me not only to mature professionally, to pursue my
studies and stimulate my creativity, but above all, it has given me the chance to become acquainted with a family of strong values and
generosity.
Being part of the Contini Gallery is somewhat like being part of a family.
It was an emotional moment for me when in March, Stefano and Riccarda Contini announced their intention to host an exhibition of
my works. I cannot hide the fact that for some time it was what I had hoped for, but dreams do not always come true. Fortunately, this
time my hopes were not in vain.
As soon as I found out, instinctively I began to think of a title for the exhibition, and there was no doubt: Stories of People and Things. A
tribute to my Maestro Giac Casale, who welcomed me into his studio when I was only a young boy and had just received my diploma
at the European Institute of Design (IED). He helped me to understand a photo shooting, he taught me about light, how to see the world
through other eyes and above all, he taught me how to narrate stories or rather, as he would always say, the Stories of People and Things.
While writing these few lines, I just found out that Giac, at 93 years of age, has passed on to a better place. He lived of art and light and
my idea to dedicate this exhibition to him moves me even more.
My work is prevalently orientated towards the realization of artwork which represents my own view of contemporaneity. In fact, I have
always been particularly interested in studying the relationship between reality and appearances.
This exhibition is a journey that has accompanied me during the past years, the fruition of various studies and styles while remaining true
to my principal concepts. There are new visions, but with the same elements.
I have already amply thanked Stefano and Riccarda, but must also include their children Riccardo, Leonardo and Tommaso. Above all,
I thank my family who has always sustained me along the way of becoming an “artist” both in moments of joy and in sadness.

Biografia / Biography
diversi fotografi e agenzie pubblicitarie.
Ginori, Irge e al calendario Same.
Continua, inoltre, a collaborare con diverse aziende quali Bosch, Sep, Filatura di Crosa, Diva Cravatte, Ritmonio, Inab Dekonab, Maio
Group, NextEvent e altri.
(Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Internazionale Senza Tendenze, Biella) e in diverse collezioni pubbliche e private.
After graduating in 1992 from the European Institute of Design in Milan, Paolo Vegas began his career as a photographer collaborating
with various national and international photographers and advertising agencies. In November 1997 he showed his works for the first time
in the exhibition People and Things and in December of the same year he took part in a photographic project aimed at collecting funds
for Emergency.
In those years he worked alongside internationally renowned photographers such as Giac Casale, Joe Oppedisano, Giovanni Gaste for
the realisation of advertising campaigns for well-known brands such as Barbour (with Piero Chiambretti, 1996), Peugeot (1998), Algida
(1999), Pagine Gialle, Richard Ginori, Irge and the calendar “Same”. He collaborated with companies such as Bosch, Sep, Filatura di
Crosa, Diva Cravatte, Ritmonio, Inab Dekonab, Maio Group, NextEvent and many others.
It is precisely the advertising field that artistically influenced Paolo Vegas, a world where images are purposefully constructed to engage
emotionally with the audience and to have on it a strong impact.
In 2010 he started working on his Progetto clonazioni (Cloning Project). In this series of works the subject is portrayed simultaneously two
or even more times, creating therefore clones of it. Vegas shoots his subjects in different poses against the same background while
keeping the camera stationary at the centre of the scene and only rotating it to achieve the various shots. The individual frames are
then collated to create the final artwork. At the end of the process, Paolo Vegas adds a real, three-dimensional object chosen among
the ones photographed, creating his personal, recognizable trademark and making his artworks unique collage pieces.
In 2011 he was invited, together with Omar Ronda, to exhibit his works at the 54th Venice Biennale, Italian Pavilion, with the exhibition
Cosa Nostra - Sacro Santo - Nostra Cosa, curated by Vittorio Sgarbi.
Since 2014 Paolo Vegas has been represented by the Galleria d’Arte Contini. His works are part of the private collection of the M.A.C.I.S.T.
Museum (Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Internazionale Senza Tendenze, Biella, Italy), and of private and public collections.
