European Championships of 2019

Exciting until the end!

Yves Houtackers

Organising European Championships for no less than three equestrian

disciplines on home soil is a task the Dutch did not take lightly this past summer.

The venue where the CHIO Rotterdam normally takes place, was transformed

to host the Longines FEI EC for jumping, dressage and para-dressage. Our own

DSHS-selection committee member Yves Houtackers took the reins as Sport

Director and he has had quite a ride.

Since 2014 Yves Houtackers has been active as the Sport Director

Jumping for the CHIO. This year the stakes where higher than

usual, Yves explains. “Of course, there is always more pressure

when it comes to organising an event of this scale. For the CHIO we

already have a great team to work with. And for the Europeans more

people joined in to make it a success. In the beginning I had to get

used to having more members in the team. It took more time to change

gears, but overall I think everyone has done a fantastic job. Not just

concerning the show jumping, but regarding all disciplines."

Beating hearts

“Maybe we did not get all the hearts of the people of Rotterdam beating

faster for our sport, however we did host a fantastic event in their city.

Where equestrian sport has always gone hand in hand with business.

The fact that the boulevard was a bit of a walk from the main stadium,

it served its purpose and gave visitors the opportunity to enjoy more

than just horse sports. All in all, I think the European Championships

of 2019 were successful all around.”

Super exciting sport

“I am not just a sport director when I stand next to the arena, I am

a rider at heart, so I experience the sport in more ways than one. I

really think we’ve seen abnormal sport in Rotterdam. In between

making sure everything ran smoothly, I did have some time to enjoy

the show jumping enormously.” With the ante raised, there were a few

extra aspects to keep a close eye on for Houtackers and his team.

“For example, time is always of the essence, but at this event it was

paramount. We had a lot of TV-networks airing the competitions live

and that means you simply cannot be late with anything.”

A bit of luck

“For me, but I believe also for the spectators, the sport was exciting

until the last rider. Take the individual jumping final: the guys that

were in the race for a medal, they can win a Grand Prix on any given

day. That is how good they are. So, I can’t say the riders that made

it onto the podium came as a surprise. Of course, as any sportsman

will confirm, there is always a bit of luck involved. If Ben Maher hadn’t

had that rail down in the final round, he would have been European

Champion instead of Martin Fuchs. The tables can change in an

instant. It was a well-deserved win nonetheless, the courses were

challenging enough.”

Incident

“The streaker incident on the final day is something we all regret.

Everyone acted in the moment to the best of their ability. We tried

not to make a complete drama out of it, for it does not add anything.

If anything, it takes away from the sport. We where just glad Marc

Houtzager and Sterrehof’s Calimero did not get hurt. Finishing in eight

place under such circumstances is almost worth a medal on itself.”

For the Dutch, the European Championships were successful in

terms of organisation and sports. The riders in orange won more

medals than from any other country. Thanks to the dressage team

and the fantastic achievements of the para-dressage riders.

HEROES

OF OUR

TIME

Looking back on a period in which Dutch showjumping was seriously on

the rise, about three decades ago, a club of illustrious horse men comes

to mind. One of these gentlemen, who was at the centre of the sports

development in the 1980s, is Hans Horn. He coached the Dutch team for

nine years, in which he set a precedent with ‘ his’ riders and horses and

helped to put Holland on the map as a country where equestrianism thrives.

Horn looks back on his career with satisfaction but remains humble about the

successes that according to him are largely down to luck and timing.

Hans Horn was born in 1948 in Haaksbergen.

Nothing indicated at the time that he

would devote his life to equestrian sport

and breeding. “No one in my family had anything to

do with horses. I always had a love for animals, but

things really kicked off during the time I spent with

one of my childhood friends, Jan Greve”, says Horn

about his childhood. Both boys from Haaksbergen

became renowned horse men in their own way, but

it all started with a bit of fun.

From the beginning

“You know how it goes: riding a bit, taking some

lessons, one thing led to another. That started

when I was about twelve years old. I became more

serious about riding horses when I was 18 years old

and I worked at Stal Maathuis. There I was asked

to come and ride for an Italian horse dealer. So, I

quickly served my time in the military, which was

mandatory in those days, and left for Italy. That

was in August of 1969. I was supposed to stay

there until Christmas, but to make a long story

short, my employer died on Boxing Day and due

to circumstances I remained there for seven years,

until 1976."

Enough is enough

“I moved from Italy to Germany and started

working at Paul Schockemöhle. In ’76 I was in the

Dutch selection of the showjumping team for the

Olympic Games in Montreal. But at the last minute

I was cut from the team. A week in advance it

turned out that I was not allowed to go. That was

a big disappointment and from that moment on I

decided I would leave the showjumping to others.

Enough was enough.”

Right hand man

“I started as a rider with Paul. At that time, he

already had a lot work from his non-equestrian

businesses. And after a few months my role

changed. A little bit of stable management, training

and helping with buying and selling horses. This is

how the link was made with the Hendrix family. I

bought some horses from Paul Hendrix and that's

how we got to know each other.” For six years, Horn

was known as Schockemöhle's right hand man.

"Those were good times, but after a while I wanted

to start my own business."

The Wiemselbach

In the village of Oud-Ootmarsum, where Horn’s inlaws

lived, he was able to buy a beautiful home and

stables, the Wiemselbach. “My relationship with

Paul was good at the time and remains good until

this day. I consider him to be my best friend. He is

one of the first people I fall back on. Our paths just

separated businesswise. When the Wiemselbach

was bought in '82, I was looking for a rider and Jos

Lansink was locally quite successful. I asked if he

wanted to ride for me and in the end we worked

together for 14 years."

Good old days

“The first horse which Jos performed with at a high

level was Felix. They got selected for the Olympic

Games in '88. At that time Henk Nooren was still

the chef d’Equipe. After the Games I was asked if

I wanted to take over. I did think about that for a

while. I no longer know exactly how it all went, but I

just rolled into it. That period and the collaboration

with Yvonne van Bergen, Jan Heidema and Jacques

van Leeuwen at the NHS, I have fond memories of

those times. They really where the good old days.”

Respect

“In the beginning, I’d been the chef d’Equipe

for about three months, I had to make the rider

selection for 's-Hertogenbosch. I was able to appoint

10 or 12 riders, but I did not include one rider from a

particular owner. We were immediately threatened

with an injunction, which was dropped at the last

minute. The Dutch federation really had my back

in this case, luckily. Even though the owner in

question was a good sponsor of the NHS at the

time. When you start as a chef d’Equipe you need

to gain respect. That is essential for leadership, to

10 DSHS | The 2020 edition DUTCHSPORTHORSESALES.COM

1948

Born in

Haarksbergen,

The Netherlands

deserve respect. And that you are able to substantiate your

decisions.”

Link to success

“You need to make it happen with your team. You need

good riders in combination with good horses, meaning a

lot depends on luck and timing. They are all small links that

click together. Like in '91 at the European Championships

we won gold with the team. And of course, the golden

team performance in Barcelona at the Olympic Games of

'92, with Jos and Egano, Jan with Top Gun and Piet with

Ratina, who also individually won a silver medal. That was

fantastic.”

Libero H

Horn retired as the Dutch team coach in '98. “The team

horses from that time, we all owe a lot to them. When I

speak of my own horses, Jos was successful with Felix, Easy

Jumper and Dulf, but Libero was something special. He

personally meant the most to me. Libero won, I believe, five

World Cups in one season and the final in 's-Hertogenbosch.

Those are moments I will never forget. Libero H was a once

in a lifetime horse. In '86, he came to our stable as a 5-yearold.

When he won his first Grand Prix at the age of seven,

high sums were offered indeed. But I wanted to keep the

horse for the sport and for Jos. In that kind of situation, you

just cannot sell your best horse. And because Libero had

other options next to the sport as a stallion, I estimated

that he would be worth keeping in the long run." Horn

was more than right. Libero H became one of the most

influential stallions in sport and in breeding. He produced

numerous well-performing offspring of which his son

Numero Uno and his grandson Van Gogh are the perfect

examples. To this day, this infamous trio of stallions and

many more represent the Wiemselbach stud farm.

Stud book quarrels

After Horn's career as the chef d’Equipe of the Dutch

jumping team, he focused more on his stallions. “Until

then I combined coaching with the stud farm. After '86

I focussed on that side of the business more. Of course,

Libero was also part of that picture. Although things

didn't go so smoothly in the Netherlands, in the end it

worked out well. The stallion inspection committee was

not very positive at the time, but we slowly made it work

with Libero”, the stud owner looks back on some of the

quarrels of the past. While the stud farm thrived, Horn

remained active throughout his career in the equestrian

world in various roles. But the job of chef d’Equipe suited

him particularly well, leading him to coach the Italian and

Swedish team for a number of years as well.

Into place

Many of life’s puzzle pieces have fallen into place for Horn.

“My son Daan has, contrary to expectations, become my

successor in the company. As a result, I had to commute

less between the Wiemselbach and the home we bought in

Italy. This allowed my wife and I to enjoy our time together.

We even have a vineyard in Italy that produces wine.

Pretty good wine, if I say so myself. Astrid passed away

last year. Ofcourse that has taken an effect on everyone.

She has been an integral part in the development of our

stable in the Netherlands. She had a hands-on approach

and she has experienced all the ups and downs with me.

One of the biggest downs was of course when Jos Lansink

left our stables to ride for Belgium. I always considered

Jos as my second son. He was with our family for fourteen

years. Suddenly that was over. I found that a bitter pill to

swallow.”

Nothing last forever

“We were left with six or seven Grand Prix horses and from

one day to the next I no longer had a rider. Everyone said

find another rider, you have to move on, you have to do

this, do that... At one point I said: it has been a wonderful

ride, but this is where it ends. Nothing lasts forever. In life

there are many people who, at some point, want to build

their career independently. Which I myself have done, so

on the other hand I had to accept Jos’ decision. I had a great

time with him, and I believe I could not have experienced

that with someone else. “In the end, I wouldn't call myself

a hero, rather a lucky guy. I am very fortunate to have been

part of a period of meaning in which our know-how, our

way of looking at the sport and our horses and breeding

programs were on the rise. Everything came together. Luck

was on my side and on the side of Dutch equestrianism",

concludes the hero of our time.

‘IN THE WORLD OF

FORMULA 1 EVERYTHING IS

MUCH MORE TECHNOLOGY BASED.‛

It’s always interesting to look at other sports, because I think you

can learn something from all of them. I have been introduced to the

equestrian sport a little bit by my connection with Hattel Horse and

Sanna Backlund and there are quite some similarities with my own

sport. For example the value of having a good team around you. In

the Formula 1 everything comes down to milliseconds. If your team

doesn’t cooperate perfectly this could cost you pole position. Also in

showjumping time and teamwork are very important elements.

To have a good team around you is definitely the key to success.

No athlete can accomplish goals without having a good,

supporting team around him or her. I feel that being honest is

the main thing and to never be afraid to ask for help. A team

works perfectly when every team member is in the right place

to express their talent, when they can do what they’re the best at

and at the same time are supported by the other team members.

In general the spirit and the right mentality are defining

characteristics, and it’s also important that all team members

have the same goal in mind which they want to achieve. Then

you can work for that all together and use all the energy to reach

these goals instead of spending it on random things. In the end,

sooner of later, this will bring the perfect results.

Communication and analyses

In the equestrian world there are many elements that will effect

the performance. Such as how the rider and horse work as a team,

how they communicate. In the world of Formula 1 everything is

much more technology based, everything is being analysed. All

the tests and trainings we do are analysed in every detail so we

get unlimited data available. That helps us to keep improving

our performances. So I think in terms of training, this kind of

analysing could also be an interesting tool for the equestrian

sport. We analyse everything, such as the perfect racing lines

and where we can win some time during the race. Also about

the team effort, there might be things that the equestrian world

can learn from the Formula 1. About how to work as efficient as

possible. Communication of course plays an important role in

this. Again, being honest and open-minded helps a lot. And to

be always there to support each other and talk about things. It’s

the same communication that is important for a rider to have

with his groom, owner, trainer or coach.

Willing to improve

What I have learned about top riders is that they all have a lot of

passion for the horses and are committed to achieve their goals.

That is important for every top athlete, in whatever sport. Top

riders put in hard work and practice, they are willing to improve.

Just like we are in the Formula 1. Obviously, the horse is an alldetermining

element of the equestrian sport. Horses are really

something different than our cars, which you can pretty much

control. That’s what makes horse riding in my opinion way more

difficult, at least for me. I have tried to ride a horse a few times

but it takes more practice for me to really start enjoying in. But I

am definitely going to try to become a better rider in the future,

probably on one of the horses from Stal Hendrix. For now, I leave

it up to the team at Hattel Horse, where I try to be a good team

member.

Interplast Holland

At Interplast, a large and loving team is committed to carrying out

reconstructive surgery on children and adults in under-resourced

communities. The organization was founded in 1969 in the United States.

When people heard about this wonderful initiative, sister organizations

were established in other countries. Stichting Interplast Holland

was founded in 1990. Therefore, Stichting Interplast Holland is, as a

foundation, independent of its sister organizations.

TRANSFORMATION

Over the years, Stichting

Interplast Holland has built

up a large team of experienced

Dutch plastic and reconstructive surgeons,

anesthesiologists, surgeon’s assistants and

anesthesia assistants. All these volunteers

devote themselves with heart and soul to

the patients in the Third World countries.

Every year, teams are sent to areas such as

Zanzibar, Burundi, Nigeria, Uganda, Guinea-

Bissau, Tanzania and since 2017 also in

Bangladesh. Because the inhabitants of these

countries often do not have sufficient income

or insurance, the operations are carried

out for them free of charge. The residents

are informed of the organization's visit by

means of posters and radio messages. With

help from local doctors, selection rounds

are organized to determine which patient

needs the aid the most. In order to minimize

the burden on local hospitals, Stichting

Interplast Holland also brings, along with its

own doctors, also its own materials. This way,

up to 100 operations can be performed per

mission. Because of the fantastic results that

are achieved with the operations, every time

the organization sees the patients again, it is

an absolute joy. The patients undergo not only

a physical but also a mental transformation

as a result of the surgery. Literally, this work

saves lives.

PREVENTION

In addition to carrying out reconstructive

surgeries, Stichting Interplast Holland is

also involved in a burn prevention program.

Partly because of the contribution from

Dutch Sport Horse Sales, they can help a

huge number of Ugandese in the burn center

that was set up there in 2007. During the

missions it was noticed that many patients

were victims of accidents that resulted in

burns. 60% of patients that underwent these

operations were children under the age of six.

Due to lack of knowledge and experience,

the wounds were often poor or not taken

care of. To prevent this, Stichting Interplast

Holland has entered into a partnership with

local organizations. This allows schools and

health centers to be informed and trained

to prevent burns. Nowadays, 50 schools

and 1000 children are actively involved in

the program. The Dutch Sport Horse Sales

is proud to support the wonderful work of

Stichting Interplast Holland.

Travers horse Facility

Paving the way one sustainable step at a time

Travers Horse Facility is one of a kind

in more ways than one. It paved the

way as the first business to successfully

develop on one of the plots of land in

the equestrian zone that surrounds

Equestrian Centre de Peelbergen. Next

to the state-of-the art equestrian complex being stunningly

beautiful, it also operates with sustainability at its core.

Demonstrating that opportunities are there for the taking

in the province of Limburg.

Travers Horse Facility connects people with a passion for horses and

the equestrian sport. The aim is to provide a wide range of rental

possibilities, while minimalizing the company’s environmental

footprint. The equestrian complex described is the brainchild of

Mart Christiaens. A Limburg born and raised businessman who

has turned a bold idea into reality we can all enjoy.

How did the idea come about?

“A few years ago, I was approached by Emile Hendrix. He asked

if we could meet at the site where the Peelbergen was being

developed. Here he explained the plans for Equestrian Centre de

Peelbergen and the equestrian zone of Grandorse, in Kronenberg,

the Netherlands”, Marts explains. “I was intrigued by the idea. Not

only because we would be bringing the heart of equestrian sport to

this region, but also because the project was being developed and

financed by entrepreneurs with the support from the municipality

and the province.”

Travers Horse Facility

“Travers Horse Facility is meant to be a

home away from home for our guests.”

“After that conversation, I contacted the then alderman Paul Driessen.

He sketched the same scenario and affirmed that both the municipality

and the province supported the plans. After these positive meetings,

we - Christiaens Group - immediately became one of the founders of

the Peelbergen. A decision made on shared interests: A passion for

horses and the opportunity to link our core business, mushrooms

and composting, to the project. We regularly visit the Peelbergen with

our clients and talk about the plans, what is happening and what still

needs to be done.”

Put two and two together

“The first plans for Travers Horse Facility were aimed at developing

an equestrian facility that met all possible requirements and where

people could share their knowledge and expertise.” Mart continues.

“During that period, we came into contact with a Chinese investor

who was particularly interested. The idea was to coach riders from

China in the Netherlands and to find suitable and well-trained horses

for that purpose. Putting two and two together we contacted an

entrepreneurial equestrian family, who were extremely suitable for

implementing this idea. The aim was to connect these parties and

start developing Travers Horse Facility.”

The essence of it all

However with paving the way there are always some obstacles to

overcome. “When applying for a building permit, uncertainties arose

such as deadlines, zoning plans, etcetera. Due to this the

entrepreneurial family eventually dropped out. And when we finally

got the green light from the municipality to start the build, the Chinese

investor also dropped out. So, we decided to develop the project

ourselves. In June 2019 Travers Horse Facility opened its doors and

welcomed the first guests. Not only riders and grooms, but complete

equestrian teams, families, sponsors and trainees. All related in

one way or another to the horse industry. There have of course been

some start-up problems, but after a few months everything is really

turning out the way we envisioned. Allowing the essence to flourish:

Connecting people with passion and joining knowledge for horses.

Christiaens Group

Christiaens Group started in 1971 with producing machinery for the

mushroom industry and has since expanded their expertise in all

areas related to mushroom cultivation. Over the years Christiaens

Group has become a global leader in developing turn-key solutions

for mushroom farms and composting yards. The company is located

in Horst, in the province of Limburg, relatively close to the Peelbergen.

Recycle

Mart not only relies on local businesses and his employees, he still has

a hands-on approach. “When I am on site I always take a walk through

the stables to see the horses and meet our guests, but I also have a look

at the dung heap. Manure is the base product for Christians Group to

make a good substrate for growing healthy mushrooms. The residual

material (called champost, a blend of the Dutch word for mushrooms

of anything a horse, their riders and

carers could wish for.

– champignons – and compost) goes back to the fields to be used as the base for new straw and

grain for the horses. A good way to recycle and add sustainability to Travers Horse Facility.

With this in mind we incorporated the products we develop at the end of the cycle in the logo,

mushrooms and horses.”

Acclaimed Label

“With Travers Horse Facility we want to connect people with each other, but also with the

province of Limburg. For example, by providing training opportunities and the best horses from

our region. To illustrate that: I was once at a meeting in a town hall somewhere in Australia

for a presentation about mushroom cultivation and composting. At one point an official said:

‘Everything that comes from Germany and the Netherlands is good, there is no discussion

about that.’ This statement also applies to the equestrian world, because you can see Dutch

horse bloodlines thrive all over the world. So, if we already have this label, we must ensure that

we cherish it and spread the word even more and, above all, do not take it for granted. The horse

industry is growing enormously and is becoming more and more professional. The equestrian

industry has become an essential part of our region. The great thing is that everyone can enter

this business as long as you are passionate, from riders, to caterers, to truck drivers, you name

it. We at Travers Horse Facility are proud to help pave the way in putting this region on the map

even more powerfully.”

For the horses:

• 46 luxury stalls (3,5 x 4 meters)

• 8 wash stalls

• 2 tack rooms with 32 tack boxes

• 6 private tack rooms

• 28 paddocks

ISTINOV

Ustinov x Vegas

At the 16th edition of the Dutch Sport Horse Sales the Youngster of the Year award is presented to the team

behind the outstanding performing Istinov. This six-year-old gelding was purchased in the auction of 2018

by Carpe Diem Equestrian Team and he already claimed nine victories in the international Youngster

Tour under the saddle of Omer Karaevli, stable rider of the in Baarlo based stable.

Every year the DSHS Youngster of the Year title

is awarded to an outstandingly performing

horse. Istinov follows in the footsteps of

the successful international showjumpers

Brighton Bay of Emma Augier de Moussac,

Martin Fuchs’s Grand Prix showjumper Chica

B Z, and the promising Iris of Jack O’Donohue.

With several eye-catching young talents sold in

the past through the Dutch Sport Horse Sales,

the battle for the DSHS Youngster of the Year

title has proved to be a hard-fought this year.

Great origins

The six year old Istinov (Ustinov x Vegas)

was bred by Jean Dresen and comes out of

a very good dam line, whichs finds its origin

at the famous Stal Roelofs. His dam V.Sellie

1 Z is a half-sister of Joy Lammers’s Grand

Prix showjumper T Sellie 14 (s.Namelus R)

and she has already foaled the international

1.45m showjumpers Felllie (s.Ukato) and Erka

(s.Calvaro Z), both ridden by Joy Lammers.

Another great offspring out of Istinov’s dam is

Hardy (s.Verdi TN), who was sold at the Dutch

Sport Horse Sales in 2016. He has made a

successful 1.40m debut as a seven-year-old

under Bassem Mohammed. That’s why it does

not come as a surprise that Istinov has so much

jumping qualities and a top mentality. Istinov

was one of the most promising horses in the

Dutch Sport Horse Sales collection of 2018, and

he was purchased by the Siyahi family and Avni

Atabek of Carpe Diem Equestrian Team.

Sustained successes

Under Omer Karaevli, the stable rider of

Carpe Diem, Istinov started his international

sports career in November of 2018. Within ten

months they have already achieved fifteen

international top-three results in the Young

Horse classes, including no less than nine

victories. They claimed multiple wins in both

Vejer de la Frontera and Gorla Minore. The son

of the international sport and breeding stallion

Ustinov, who is still available for breeding at

Stal Hendrix, has a bright future ahead of him.

CORONADO

Cassini x Acord II

The DSHS Horse of the Year title is reserved for outstanding performers on the highest level. The ten-year-old Coronado

can certainly be included in that category. This year he was placed second in the 1.60m class of Gijon and he won 1.50m

classes in Guadalajara and Leon. Under Francisco Pasquel he achieved many other remarkable results, and by doing

that Coronado made great advertisement for the Dutch Sport Horse Sales.

The Holsteiner Coronado (Cassini I x Acord II)

was bred by Karl-Heinz Markussen and Paul

Hendrix discovered him as a very promising

youngster in Germany. He is a full brother of the

Grand Prix showjumper Cassini Bay of Daniel

Deusser and Petronella Andersson and a

grandson of the Grand Prix showjumping mare

Coriana 10 (s.Corrado I). They all represent the

valuable Holsteiner dam line 8828.

Mexican rider

Under the name Charlie Grey this future talent

was part of the Dutch Sport Horse Sales

collection of 2013. At the auction Joan Jacobs

invested in the future and she purchased this

special horse six years ago. Since the end of

2016 Coronado has been under the saddle

of Mexican rider Francisco Pasquel, who

unfortunately was not able to make it to the

ceremony at the auction this year. After some

successes in the international Youngster Tour

with other riders, Francisco trained the Cassini

I son up to international 1.60m level. Last

year they jumped their first 1.50m and 1.60m

classes and they were already placed multiple

times. At the beginning of 2019, Francisco

Pasquel and Coronado won the 1.50m class of

CSI3* Guadalajara, and shortly thereafter they

also claimed the victory in the 1.50m class of

CSI4*-W Leon. At the last mentioned show,

Francisco and Coronado were also able to

finish in fourth place in the World Cup Qualifier.

Award

Last summer the pair proved their value for

the Mexican team several times in the Nation

Cup competitions and they were placed in

international classes many times. One of the

highlights was the second place in the 1.60m

class of CSIO5* Gijon, in which they jumped

two wonderful clear rounds. In a packed

Equestrian Center De Peelbergen, Joan Jacobs

was involved in the honoring of Coronado as

DSHS Horse of the Year. She received an award

made by the Limburg artist Jos Dirix.

20 years of Limburg Foal Auction

A lot has changed in the last 20 years. But what is still the same is that you have to have good foals and buyers to have

an existence as an auction. Only then can an event grow and become a fixture in the equestrian landscape. In this article

“Most breeders are extremely nervous on the day of the

I asked, "Could I have a look?" She answered, “You can't find it anyway.” I found

the letter within 1 second. We were able to laugh about it together. ”

AT HOME WITH

THE JACOBS FAMILY

In the western part of the state of New York,

dairy companies have dominated the landscape

for generations. In the midst of the green open

landscape filled with cows, over the last few years

a dream has been built. A dream in which not

cattle, but horses play the leading role. It is the

beautiful stable of the Jacobs family that has been

built with much planning and precision since

2013. The complex, just south of Buffalo, is in the

final stage of the build and carries the name North

Star. Here, young horses are quietly produced to

excel in the jumping and hunter sport.

34 DSHS | The 2020 edition DUTCHSPORTHORSESALES.COM

For a long time, Lou was one of the top riders in America.

Together with his horse Janus de Ver (Uriël x Furioso)

he was on the shortlist of the Pan American Games

and the Olympic Games. However, four years later they

got married and sealed their love with Charlotte and

Louis Jr. Lou about this period: “At the time, top sport

made up a large part of my life. But that changed as my

contribution within our family business increased.”

After obtaining his bachelor's degree in Economics and

a master's degree in Business at Harvard University, he

entered Delaware North Companies. “The company was

founded by my grandfather and his brothers around

1915. They sold peanuts and popcorn to theater guests

in Buffalo.

The company has since grown into a privately held

hospitality company with a global reach. With 55,000

employees, the company serves half a billion guests

annually in the U.S. and Canada, the United Kingdom,

and Australia and New Zealand. “My father is Chairman

and I share the title of CEO with my two brothers. We

Although the stable is a 10-minute drive from their home, the family

really sees North Star as their home. Here they spend the most

time together. The family consists of father Lou, mother Joan,

daughter Charlotte (24) and son Louis Jr. (26). To find out how this dream

finally became reality, we go back in time.

In 1984, the year Steve Jobs presented the first Apple Macintosh computer

to the world and Band Aid recorded the song ‘Do they know it's Christmas’,

a 21-year-old young woman working for the Leone brothers was lunging a

wild horse at a horse show. Joan: “Lou paused to have a look. I don't know

if he thought: ‘Wow, she's good with that crazy horse’, or that he thought

‘she’s kind of cute’, but for sure he found the girl at the end of the lunge-line

attractive.” Yet it took Lou a few months to ask her out. “I don't know why

it took him so long," she laughs. "Maybe he was too nervous or too busy.

Around that time, he won the Hamburg Derby and was part of the winning

Nations Cup team in Aachen.”

that crazy horse’,

feel a tremendous responsibility to the thousands of people who work for us, and

that motivates us to continuously grow and reinvest in our business.”

Already owning Deeridge Farm in East Aurora, NY, Lou’s parents in 1979

added another Deeridge property: Deeridge Farms in Wellington. A sprawling,

beautiful estate that will be the host of the Palm Beach Masters in 2020. Both

places have a special place in Lou’s heart. “Our entire family grew up at Deeridge

Farms in East Aurora. It is a wonderful place where we still come together."

Joan continues: "We were so fortunate to have Deeridge. But at some point,

having acquired many young horses, this sometimes led to difficult situations.

Try training a 3-year-old in the same arena where your young nieces ride their

hunters. With so many young ones, we needed a place of our own to pursue our

goals."

And so, the family started looking for a suitable place. Joan sighs: “We were

searching for more than three years when this parcel of land became available

and was just a 10-minute drive from our home in the village.” It’s an old dairy

farm, that was overgrown and it needed a lot of work. But it had a pond, a

beautiful view and the spectacular sunsets. There was a large

cabin made entirely of giant pines from Colorado. We didn't want

the cabin initially because it needed so much work and I really

just wanted to focus on the land and the horse stables, but many

people persuaded us to keep it. After a bit of renovation, the entire

family now enjoys it. We all use it to watch sports, host epic BBQs

and sit around the giant firepit and watch the incredible sunsets.

Guests visiting from out of town often request the cabin for their

accommodations. Along with the cabin was a building that

would temporarily house some of the horses.

Now the stable building had to be built. This became Joan's major

focus of the whole project. With her experience as a groom, rider,

and owner, she knew exactly what requirements the complex had

to meet. “I especially wanted it to be efficient. A building where the

central main aisle would be the work space. I wanted the horses

stabled in separate aisles on the sides, creating a courtyard.” To

gain inspiration, their friend Dutch Pete (Peter van de Kallen ed.)

took them to numerous Dutch stables. “We went to Anky van

Grunsven, among others. And at Stal Hendrix they gave me all

the time to browse. I think all my questions about manure pits

and grooming stalls must have driven people crazy.” When Joan's

drawings started to take shape, they return to the Netherlands.

This time they took their architect and contractor with them.

Peter would take them to Leon Thijssen’s stables. Joan says about

this: “I started to smile when I walked into Leon's stable complex.

It was very similar to the barn that I’d designed. That was a very

strange sensation. But I could immediately feel that my design was right.” Now, three

years later, the complex is almost finished and only the driveway needs to be paved.

Daughter Charlotte, who studied Sports Marketing at the University of Miami, is the

first rider at North Star. Louis looks proud and says: “She is really the finesse rider. She

is realizing the patience needed to develop a young horse. She knows how to give the

horses confidence by giving them a positive experience every time they go out. I’m

certainly biased, but I think she’s an incredible talent. We are really lucky to have her.”

When asked whether Charlotte was also the reason to build North Star, Joan says: “This

stable is something we always wanted. We didn't want to put that pressure on her of

building a facility just for her. It is really for all of us, including Lou Jr. My husband visits

nearly every evening, if his busy schedule permits. He especially loves to spend time

with his favorite horses. On weekends we try to ensure that he teaches us."

Lou adds, "We thought it would be better to build a stable and produce young stock

instead of buying one or two top horses. Hopefully this is a better investment over the

years. We decided to be in this for the long run." Joan adds: "My role as manager of the

stable will always remain, because it’s what I love. We are here to stay. This is a big part

of our family life."

A YOUNG

RIDERS

ACADEMY

ENABLES RIDERS TO BECOME COMPLETE ATHLETES

Being a successful sportsman or woman

takes far more than just possessing talent.

In the world of showjumping a Young

Riders Academy has taken the task upon

themselves to guide and cultivate talented

riders for the benefit of the sport. Since

the beginning of the YRA five years ago

many of the riders that have taken part in

the program are making quite a name for

themselves. However, jumping into the

spotlight is just one of the goals set for the

lucky few that are accepted into the Riders

academy.

To become a YRA-member

Twenty-five to thirty athletes between 18 and 23 years of age, with an established level

of riding are nominated. Approximately five riders from European Championships and

the others endorsed and selected by European National Federations, with a maximum

of three candidates per NF. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Riding skills based on excellent results in 140-150 classes.

• Personal profile including education, interests and ambitions.

• Personal and family background.

A Young Riders Academy was founded by

Athenaeum, a non-profit organisation, with

the cooperation of the International Jumping

Riders Club and the support of Rolex. “The

Riders Academy was born out of a shared

common goal”, Valentina Ottaviani starts to

explain. Valentina is the project manager and

she passionately tell us what the Academy

stands for and who it is meant to support. “The

world of sport is evolving fast and athletes must

become managers of themselves to achieve their

ambition. The equestrian sport, for reasons that

relate to its nature, has lagged compared to other

sports. Nowadays being an outstanding talent is

not enough to manage a career as a professional

athlete. Riders need a system!”

Eleonora Ottaviani and Emile Hendrix

42 DSHS | The 2020 edition DUTCHSPORTHORSESALES.COM

Complete athletes

“Riders need to become complete athletes in order to reach their full potential”,

Valentina continues. “They tend to place all their focus on improving their riding skills

and they forget about themselves. Therefore we’ve developed two types of programs.

The full training program, where riders are given the opportunity to take part in a

tailormade program that allows them to train with a professional for a longer period

and the educational program. In both programs the team members attend various

courses; including mental coaching, fitness, business management, economics,

marketing, communication, veterinary science and anti-doping regulations.”

Renowned professionals

For the full training program professionals such as Marcus Beerbaum, Jos Lansink, Ben

Wim and Gerco Schröder, Henk Nooren, Marco Kutscher, Franke Sloothaak, Rodrigo

Pessoa, Jean Maurice Bonneau and Emile Hendrix train the YRA-team members at

their stables. Emile Hendrix is intermittently involved as a trainer, this year he is part

of the selection panel. About thirty young riders that have indicated to their national

federations that they would like to be considered for the YRA-programs, are invited to

events where they are evaluated by the selection panel. Approximately one third of the

applicants is accepted into the Riders Academy.

Thriving

A thriving former participant of the YRA is Pieter Clemens. As a Belgian rider he is

one of many talents in his country. Due to the strong competition from his fellow

countrymen and limited openings to compete at major events, he often lucked out.

Thanks to the program he has been able to develop and show his potential at the top

of the sport. “The YRA-program does more than provide education and training. We

also provide financial means and thanks to agreements between the YRA Board, sport

managers and CSI organising committees, riders are invited - often together with their

tutors - to major events throughout their educational period.”

‘We try to assist

the members, even if

it is just with the

little things.’

Custom training

In consultation with the project team and the

members of the board: President Eleonora Ottaviani

(IJRC Director), Vice President Breido Graf zu

Rantzau (German NF and DOKR President) and Sport

Manager Sven Holmberg (Former FEI Vice President),

the YRA’s tries to accommodate the needs of each

individual athlete. “For example, Laura Klaphake,

she was selected to be part of the full program a few

years ago. But she had also planned to study abroad

in Argentina during the same period. I remember

she had quite an argument with her dad about it.

He wanted her to join the YRA. Eventually we found

a solution that enabled her to go to university and

participate in the program the following year. Also,

for riders that have responsibilities at home or work

for another stable, we try to find a solution that

benefits everyone.”

Piece of the puzzle

“We try to assist the members, even if it is just with

the little things. To help form happy athletes that can

continue their career with more pieces of the puzzle

in place.” Riders that have taken part in the YRAprograms

do not only receive valuable lessons, they

also build lasting relationships with their trainers.

“We see that members often remain in contact with

the people they have met during the program. They

help and support each other. Or even become business

partners. Our aim is to see that with our help the

members and consequently the sport continues to

develop and thrive.”

THE 10 MOST POPULAR

DUTCH

export products

BABY

MILK

Not everything is ‘Made in China, that proves the turnover of

695 million euros per year earned on the export of baby milk

powder to China. Demands from China became so extreme

in 2017 that many supermarkets had to apply a limit to

packs of baby milk powder sold per person.

‘300 million

invested in

Dutch horses

every year.’

HORSES

In the field of sports, the

Netherlands is besides

in football also very

popular in the equestrian

scene worldwide. Every

year, more than 300

million foreign euros are

invested in horses from

the Netherlands. And,

apart from the much loved

warmblood sport horses,

the Dutch ‘black gold’, the

Frisian horses, are also

gaining more popularity

abroad.

EGGS

CHEESE

When you think of the Netherlands, one quickly

associates the country with wooden shoes,

wind mills and of course cheese. No wonder

that the Dutch Gouda cheese won the first prize

in a worldwide cheese competition held in the

United States. Of course, we Dutch people are

not surprised by that at all!

NIJNTJE

When Nijntje, also known as Miffy,

was ‘born’ in 1955, writer Dick Bruna

probably never expected that the little

white rabbit would grow into such a

global icon. Now, more than 70 years

later, Nijntje is known in no less than

50 countries with her own bookand

merchandise line. Not only

children are fans of Nijntje, in Japan

the originally Dutch creation is, even

among adults, a real hype.

With over 97 million chickens in the Netherlands, it

is not so hard to imagine that the production of eggs

within the Netherlands is just as vast. Of all the eggs

that are laid on an annual basis, more than 1.4 billion

eggs are exported abroad.

BEER

Let's just admit

it, if you say beer,

you say Heineken.

This genuine Dutch

product is not only

very popular in the

Netherlands, but also

abroad many people

prefer Heineken to

any other beer brand.

As a result, the brand

has grown to be the

best drank beer and

produces 218 million

hectoliters a year

worldwide.

JOHAN

CRUYFF

Whichever football fan you’ll

ask, not one of them will

not recognize the name of

Johan Cruijff. The legendary

Dutch professional football

player is known to be one

of the best international

players ever. Partly due to

his enormous talent and

the fact that he has played

at several foreign clubs,

he made sure that the

Netherlands was put on

the map within the football

world.

STROOPWAFEL

Stroopwafels are considered a typical Dutch delicacy. Every

year we eat 44 million waffles, with ease. Stroopwafels

are also very popular abroad. For example, fast food chain

McDonalds has introduced the ‘stroopwafel McFlurry’ in

countries such as Hawaii, Canada and Alaska.

PHILIPS

‘More than 2

billion tulips

are grown on

dutch soil.‛

The Dutch multinational Philips made name

by producing televisions, shavers and

other electronic products. Nowadays,

the company is mainly active

worldwide as a top supplier and

market leader in electronical

equipment for hospitals.

TULIPS

Imagine the most ‘Dutch’ postcard

that you can think of and chances are

that you will end up with a card with

tulips. Not surprising because the

tulip is another one of those typical

Dutch products. Annually, more than 2

billion tulips are grown on Dutch soil,

all of which are intended to be sold

abroad.

selection committee

Paul Hendrix

Together with his brother

Emile, over the past 43 years

Paul has built Stal Hendrix

into an internationally

recognized trading stable. He

maintains his strong network

and keeps up with the latest

developments in showjumping

by visiting many competitions

in his home country and

abroad. He always wants to

stay ahead of the market. The

Dutch Sport Horse Sales and

many successfully sold horses

show that he often succeeds

in this. Paul runs the location

in Kessel in Limburg, where

the focus is on trade, sports,

breeding and the stallion

station.

Emile Hendrix

In the '80s and' 90s, Emile made his mark as a top rider. At the highpoint of his career

he went to the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Emile’s riding career and the qualities of

Paul make the brothers a very strong duo. Nowadays, Emile supports his son Timothy

with running the location in Baarlo. Emile is also member of the selection committee

of the Young Riders Academy, he is on the board of the Dutch Equestrian Association,

KNHS and he is a board member of Equestrian Center de Peelbergen.

Michel Hendrix

After two years learning from top

rider Ludger Beerbaum, Michel,

son of Paul, successfully built on

his riding career at Stal Hendrix

in Kessel. Together with Paul, he

is now at the helm and focuses

on the sports side of the trading

company. Several Grand Prix titles

to his name show that he is doing

this successfully. In 2020 the doors

of his own jumping stable, located

a stone's throw away from the

Stal Hendrix accommodation in

Kessel, will open.

Yves

houtackers

After working at Equestrian

Center 'De IJzeren Man'

for over 12.5 years, Yves

started his own company

in 2007. In Weert, he trains

his competition and trade

horses and helps riders from

all over the world advance

in the sporting field. He is

often abroad to achieve

great competition results,

to support his students and

to scout horses. Since 2014,

Yves has been Director Sports

Jumping at CHIO Rotterdam.

Timothy Hendrix

As a sportsman Tim has experience at the highest

level, thereby supported by his father Emile. He

lives at and manages the Stal Hendrix location in

Baarlo. He has since taken over the tasks of his

father there. The main activities of his stable are

the training and competing of showjumpers and

providing customers with the perfect match.
