A 450 AND A HALF…<br />
To give them their full titles the enduro bike is a Husqvarna FE450, mine<br />
a 2019. The rally bike is the latest 2019/2020 model Factory Rally Replica:<br />
the FR450. It’s easy to look at the stats. My FE450 puts out 45hp, renowned<br />
as being an animal, the choice of big lads and fast motocrossers, the pick<br />
of the serious racer or the quickest of greenlaners. I found it wanting<br />
in the desert, and have been taking liberties with it since my return. A<br />
silky pussycat with an almost endless capacity to drift the rear – and<br />
murder tyres. The headline stat here is that the FR produces in the order<br />
of 72hp. More than 50% more! It would be easy to finish this story here, to<br />
underline that the legacy of the ever growing capacity and speed of Dakar<br />
bikes in the mid 90s has failed to be abated by the limit to 450cc, but it’s so<br />
much more than that. So much more.<br />
