ADVENTURE: FALLThe arrival of fall in Vilas County is always breathtaking. Thisis the season of fall color drives, scenic hikes, fall festivalsand evenings by the fire with friends and family. The seasonpasses quickly—peak colors arrive in late September/earlyOctober, but travel outside of peak time rewards visitors withlate season serenity and a great opportunity to view birdsand wildlife.There’s nothing like a relaxing drive down one of VilasCounty’s tranquil roads. Here are some good bets forbreathtaking fall color.Rustic Road 60. 10 Enjoy a tranquil 12-mile route thatwill take you through the heart of the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest. It runs from Cty. Rd. Ksouth of Boulder Junction to Cty. Rd. M in Sayner-Star Lake. You’ll drive past former logging camps,hiking trails and an old saw mill.Presque Isle to Land O’ Lakes. The drive is about 30miles, and it passes through some beautiful fall scenerythat’s largely devoid of power lines. It’s an easy routeto follow; just stay on Cty. Hwy. B. Heading east out ofPresque Isle, you’ll pass the turnoff for the CatherineWolter Wilderness Area, a 2,189-acre site that’s a greatplace for a fall hike.Land O’ Lakes to Eagle River (via Phelps). A nice falldriving route will take you through eastern Vilas County.Take Hwy. 45 until you hit Cty. Hwy. E, where you’ll headeast to Phelps. From Phelps, meander southwest onHwy. 17 past North Twin Lake and continue south onHwy. 45 into Eagle River.Nicolet-Wolf River Scenic Byway. This scenic 145-mileroute will take you through the beauty of Vilas, Oneida,Forest and Langlade counties. Experience the amazingdiversity of wildlife, trails and outdoor activities in theChequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Surround yourselfwith the breathtaking colors in the fall. Order aNicolet-Wolf River Scenic Byway map at vilas.org.18 ADVENTURESScenic fall drivesHere are some options for your fall adventure.•Tour a cranberry marsh—this colorful (and photogenic!)activity can be enjoyed from July to early October inManitowish Waters and Eagle River.•View impressive flocks of migratory birds at PowellMarsh 11 , a birding hotspot between Manitowish Watersand Lac du Flambeau.•Pedal through a national forest—the Vista Lake BikeRoute in Phelps will take you through theChequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.•Join the fun at a fall festival. You’ll find them in mostcommunities, including Colorama events in Land O’Lakes and Sayner, just to name a few.•Take in fall colors from the seat of a canoe. One scenicroute is the Wisconsin River west of Eagle River—you’llencounter dramatic “boulder gardens” along the way.•Ride a horse—you’ll find outfitters in Eagle River,Boulder Junction, Minocqua and St. Germain. ADVENTURE: WINTEREvery winter, Vilas County is covered with fresh, beautifulsnow. Located in the Lake Superior snowbelt, Vilas Countyreceives on average about 6 feet of snow each winter!That means this is the perfect place for snowmobiling,snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or just enjoying winterbeauty. Here are some of our favorite winter adventures.•Roll through winter on the outstanding groomed WinManTrails, located between Winchester and ManitowishWaters. You’ll find great winter fat biking and crosscountryskiing opportunities.•Snowshoe with giants—the Van Vliet Hemlocks 12near Presque Isle will take you beneath the branches of400-year-old trees.•Go ice fishing. You’ve got more than 1,300 frozenlakes to choose from! Need somewhere to start?Anglers traditionally have good luck on Stormy Lake nearConover.•Head to snowmobiling heaven. Eagle River is asnowmobiler’s mecca, home of the annual Vintage Worldand World Championship Snowmobile derbies at thehistoric Derby Track. The Sno-Eagles offer weeklyguided tours (see page 35).•Who let the dogs out? Find out in Land O’ Lakes, whichhosts the Three Bear Sled Dog Races each winter.Minocqua also hosts the Winter Park Bark Skijor Race,a unique race where cross-country skiiers are pulled byenergetic dogs.•Glide over ice.
