Rave Reviews
Radcliffe offers unparalleled experience,
service, and selection. Their sales people, and
management, have always been responsive and
knowledgeable. I have visited many jewelry stores
across this country and I have found Radcliffe
to be my favorite place to shop.
You will too.
Julius H.
I got my new watch from Radcliffe and the
customer service was excellent. I was greeted
right away and the salesperson, Rob, helped
me try on different watches that fit my needs. He
also took the time to help me understand more
about the timepieces I was interested in. I was very
satisfied with my buying experience.
Radcliffe Jewelers is a five star jewelry business. They deliver the
type of customer service that you expect from any five star hotel
or restaurant. I’ve dealt with many businesses that have left me
disappointed with their lack of concern for their customers. Radcliffe
Jewelers is not one of them. Thanks for always exceeding my
expectations!!!
Kim W.
The Radcliffe experience was unlike
any other jeweler experience I’ve been
a part of. As an avid watch collector,
the team at Radcliffe truly went above
and beyond to procure not only the
right piece but at the right price. I look
forward to being a long-time supporter
of theirs for all my fine jewelry needs.
Cheers!
Radcliffe is hands down the best jewelry store in the Baltimore area!
The combination of experienced sales consultants and a large and
diverse inventory of incredible jewelry and watches is unbeatable. Jeff
guided me through the process of finding the perfect anniversary gift.
Thank you, Jeff!
Dan R.
Radcliffe seriously provides a lovely experience, especially for custom jewelry. My fiancé
bought my engagement ring from Kristen at Radcliffe and I worked with Kristen to have
a custom wedding band made to sit perfectly with my engagement ring. It’s stunning and
everything I hoped for and MORE! The custom wedding band only took a few weeks, and the process
was pretty much: talk with Kristen about the details I wanted for my wedding band and showed her
Pinterest pictures as inspiration, got price quotes for different widths. Kristen really helped because I
was so indecisive about the width of my band and material to use. Her knowledge was super helpful
and appreciated! After we wrote everything I was looking for in my wedding band, she sent the notes
to the jeweler and then I was sent 3D images of what the wedding band would look like (and they were
beautiful pictures). The jeweler made a wax mold of my wedding band so I could see exactly how it would
fit with my engagement ring. When I approved it, the ring was made and I went to the store to try it on.
I LOVED IT!! The whole process was only 1 month and painless - highly recommend!!
Growing
My Community
On top of being a successful businesswoman and mom of two young kids, Ali Berney finds time to
leave her mark on the community as a volunteer. Dan Kallaugher of Radcliffe Jewelers sat down with
Ali to learn more about her involvement in the community and how she finds time to get it all done.
Dan Kallaugher: How & why did you get involved
with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation?
Ali Berney: I got to know some really awesome women
when I started working with ShareBaby.
Kate Bryden (total rockstar) and I were volunteering and
through our conversation discovered our CF connection;
her mother works for the CF Foundation and my
husband’s sister has Cystic Fibrosis. Our family is closeknit
so we intimately know the impact that CF has on
people’s lives. Evan and I now serve on the board and
promote awareness throughout the community.
DK: Are you involved with any other charitable
organizations?
AB: Yes! I’ve been involved with ShareBaby since 2014.
Recently, I signed on to the Baltimore Center Stage Gala
committee in an effort to support the arts in the city.
And, as a mom, I also want my kiddos to be involved
in service projects in the community. Our most recent
project together was making care packages for families
at the Ronald McDonald House.
DK: It sounds like you’ve been teaching your kids
abou the importance of service and duty. I’m
curious as a dad myself, how do you introduce it to
them in an age appropriate way?
AB: My children are 7 and 5. Kids are inherently curious
but have a tough time understanding things outside of
their own bubble. We spend a lot of time on the ‘whys’.
Why someone may need help and what that form of
help looks like. Is it someone in need of a friend, maybe
it’s forgiveness or a boost in confidence. Giving back is
not always in the form of tangible items; sometimes the
intangible is what’s needed most.
32 Charmed 2019
Ali & her husband, Evan
DK: You also have a full-time job…
AB: I sure do. My fulltime “paid” job is selling
real estate for Monument Sotheby’s International
Realty as a licensed agent. Meeting and
connecting people are two things I love most in
this world both personally and professionally.
I’m also a total architecture nerd and spend too
much time ogling properties around town.
DK: So, you’re busy: you have 2 kids, you’re
involved in the community and you are a
successful businesswoman. How do you
balance all of this?
AB: Who said anything about balance? Ha!
But seriously, when I take on a project it’s not
single-handedly and over the years I’ve gotten
better at asking for help. It’s always a collective
and concerted effort to meet a goal, so I
definitely rely on the connections I’ve made in
the community.
DK: What should other people know if they
want to get involved with charitable nonprofits
and volunteer work?
AB: Every non-profit organization has a variety
of needs. Tour facilitates, get to know staff, talk
to those benefitting from services (if you’re able),
and get to know the organization as a whole.
I’ve always found it best to understand the need
first, to see where I fit in and what will fulfill me.
Radcliffe proudly supports Ali and her own ‘un-gala’, Slay the Menu for CF. Slay features some of
Baltimore’s most talented chefs and purveyors for an evening of inventive food and beverage. She
encourages you to reach out to her with any questions related to non-profit work in the community.
Get to Know
Elise Rubenstein
Elise Rubenstein posted her mantra in her high school yearbook:
“Everything works out for the best.” This approach to life may
explain the course of her Jewish journey which began after she
moved to Baltimore in 1998.
Along the way Elise served as chair or committee member for
countless programs and boards, including the JCC and Jewish
Women’s Giving Foundation (JWGF).
Everything led her to a leadership role at The Associated: Jewish
Federation of Baltimore that she only dreamed about…the 2020
Women’s Campaign Chair.
The Associated sits down with Elise to learn more about her
philanthropic journey.
The Associated: What was it like when you first moved
to Baltimore?
Elise: I left a job in New York City to move here
with my husband, Stu. My children were very
young at the time. Stu was working around
the clock and I was a newly stay-at-home
mother who really didn’t know anyone.
The Associated: How did it change
you?
Elise: I didn’t grow up in an observant family
at all -- I did not have a bat mitzvah and
really didn’t know anything other than Rosh
Hashanah and Passover. I basically began my
Jewish journey here in Baltimore, along with my
children. I realized that I had been missing this whole
part of myself…a spiritual part that I now get to share with my
family. And I learned that giving is generational here. I had never seen
anything like that before. I began to feel a responsibility to the community
that embraced me.
The Associated: What values did you teach your children, Madelyn
(26) and Harris (24) growing up?
Elise: I‘ve always taught them to treat people the way they would like to
be treated. When I was involved with the Jewish Women’s Giving Foundation,
I remember coming home and sharing with my kids how excited
I was to be involved in giving to Jews and non-Jews in need in our city and
working toward making a difference. I don’t think we can ever discount
the importance of being role models to our children because actions speak
louder than words.
34 Charmed 2019
The Associated: Obviously, philanthropy has been an important part
of your life. Is there a project you were involved in that really moved
you?
Elise: Absolutely! My husband and I had moved to Fells in 2015. Six months
later was when the Baltimore riots broke out after the death of Freddie
Gray. The whole city was on fire. It was horrible. A month later, we had our
voting session at the Jewish Women’s Giving Foundation and we decided to
grant the majority of our funds to our Baltimore city partners. We really
felt responsible for taking care of those right in our backyard and that had
a profound impact on me.
The Associated: How did you first get involved with The Associated?
Elise: I feel like the community really fostered me as a leader. I first joined
the JCC board where I stayed for 11 years. I joined a young women’s leadership
development program when I was 40 years of age and today, I can’t
believe that I am chair of The Associated’s Women’s campaign! How did
that happen?
The Associated: What are your goals and priorities this year?
Elise: I am so excited to be a part of reimagining what we want our community
to look like. My goal is to make sure that the women with whom
I interact know about the important work The Associated does to reach
people in so many places…locally and around the world. A lot of efforts will
be focused on empowering and educating women in our community so that
they fully understand the power of their philanthropy. We want them to
know that The Associated puts great importance on lifting up our city. After
all, we cannot have a vibrant Jewish community without a vibrant city.
The Associated: Can you share a memorable experience you had at
The Associated?
Elise: What’s freshest in my mind is the mission that I went on last year
with 70 women through The Associated to celebrate the 70th anniversary
of Israel’s founding. My mother had just passed away and I wasn’t sure if it
would be a good time to travel. Everyone assured me that this would be the
best time to go to Israel. My biggest takeaway from all of my experiences at
The Associated is how much it means to be part of such a strong community.
And I got that feeling over and over on that trip to Israel with 70 other
women.
The Associated: How has women’s philanthropy changed over the
years?
Elise: Women philanthropists are becoming such a force in our community
because women don’t want to just give a donation. They want to volunteer
and have leadership roles. They want to be engaged. Women want to be a
part of the direction the organization is going and most importantly, how
the money is being spent. That’s really what the world of philanthropy
needs - people who are dedicated to the cause.
The Associated: What might someone be surprised to know about you?
Elise: Well, I think the whole world knows that I am a wine enthusiast, so
that’s nothing new to share. But they may be interested to know that not
only do Bruce Springsteen and I hail from the same town, we also share the
same birthday, September 23.
Jewish women are leading the charge in
their local communities as philanthropists
and global activists. In the federation system,
they are contributing millions of dollars
collectively through individual gifts in their
own names.
The generosity of these women is acknowledged
in many ways, including through giving
societies that reflect the levels of support
they are contributing. None is more recognizable
than the Lions of Judah.
Known for its distinctive gold pin, the Lion
of Judah giving society was created in 1972
by Norma Kipnis-Wilson and Toby Friedland
for the Miami Women’s Division Campaign.
The program was adopted nationally in 1980.
Today, Lion of Judah encompasses 17,500
philanthropists around the world.
The women who support their federation
campaigns at the Lion of Judah level are
touching the lives of the young, the old and
the vulnerable in both their home communities
and in Jewish communities worldwide.
In Baltimore, the Lion of Judah giving level
begins at $6,000. Women have the option to
purchase the Lion of Judah pin. The pin is
an international emblem of generosity and
unites its wearers in a sisterhood of concern
and compassion. As women increase the
level of their giving, they are encouraged
to add a stone to their pins to reflect their
increased gifts to the campaign.
Every two years, Lions of Judah gather for an
international conference at which they learn
about the impact of their giving and hear
from speakers from a variety of disciplines.
Many of the women giving at this level
ensure that their generosity will remain a
creating a LOJE, Jewish women provide the
funds to meet needs at home, in Israel and
Lion of Judah is an integral part of women’s
of women who have embraced the important
value of caring for others.
Off the Cuff
with
Valérie Messika
The founder of jewelry house Messika reveals how she got her
start in the jewelry business and what is next for Messika.
Number of years in the jewelry business:
I worked alongside my father for 5 years, who has been dealing diamonds
since 1972, learning every secret of the diamond industry. I launched
Messika Paris 14 years ago and before that, I worked for Chanel jewelry
for a year in the marketing department.
When did you realize you wanted to be a jewelry designer?
I started to work with diamonds when I was quite young. At the
beginning, I created my own jewelry pieces just for myself. Some of my
friends liked my first creations a lot and insisted that I launch more
jewelry, so I started to design pieces for them as well. This is how
everything began. By watching my father at work, I learned something
more than just fashion and aesthetic, but the fundamental nobility of
the stone. There is no better source of inspiration. The starting point is
always the same: the stone.
What is your inspiration?
I get my inspiration from a lot of things, all the time – I am constantly
on the lookout for things! I am always looking for inspirations on my
travels, through architecture, interior design (which I am crazy about),
by walking in the streets and looking at people’s attitude and style.
What is the first piece you designed?
Move, which is Messika’s iconic and first collection. Move is the creation
that gave the House of Messika its signature style and that heralded its
success. For the story, on the first version, diamonds were static, and
everybody was trying to make them move. This is why I tried to develop
a new system with moving diamonds.
41 Charmed 2019
Who are your fashion icons and/or role models?
Kate Moss, for her simplicity and her elegance. She also has a little rock twist.
She is a fashion icon. My wish is to work with her.
What would you be doing if you weren’t in the jewelry business?
I wanted to be an architect but instead I studied communication. I changed
my mind regarding this career after my father asked me to spend a year with
him to teach me about the jewelry business. And then I created Messika Paris.
What’s in your personal jewelry box?
My must have jewels are my bangles, Move, and my skinny bracelet. I love to
wear Move Romane and Noa in a different range of colors. I love to stack them
and mix with my other collections. I also have a beautiful Audemars Piguet
watch.
What is the best piece of advice you ever received?
From my father: “In the same way that we choose our future partner with the
heart, we choose a diamond for the emotion that it creates in us.”
What can we look forward to in 2020?
I hope Messika will continue to evolve, we are still a young brand and there are
so many things to do! Now, we are preparing many new boutique openings all
over the world (London, Mall of Qatar, Kuwait City, Los Angeles, Florida and
more...). We are also working on our expansion to the Asian market. Lots of
exciting projects are coming for 2020!
Aletto Brothers
The Aletto Brothers’ story begins at the turn of the 19th century in Naples, Italy, when Alfredo
Aletto’s great grandfather was commissioned to create a special piece of jewelry for the
inauguration of the Eiffel Tower at Paris’s Universal Exposition. And the extraordinary passion
evident in this work is as true in today’s collections as it was nearly two centuries ago. Like the
patriarchs before him, Alfredo Aletto has devoted his life to the elusive art of crafting fine jewelry,
immersing himself in all aspects of the process, including design, lapidary work and stone setting.
This is where the story continues; in addition to crafting timeless, world-famous jewels, Alfredo
Aletto remains deeply committed to his heritage by taking on three apprentices—his sons, Alberto,
Luigi and Mario. Alberto, the eldest, was eager to follow in his father’s footsteps and has worked
in the family business for 11 years, now serving as a mentor to his younger brothers. After all,
they are also his fellow artists and business partners. Together, Alfredo and his three sons work
to balance the increasing demands of business and daily life, while offering each other the kind
of inspiration, love and support that is only found with family. Five generations later, from Naples
to Caracas to New York, Boca Raton, Florida is now home to Aletto Brothers. Their small shop is
the birthplace of some of the world’s finest gold and gemstone treasures, which include modern
interpretations of classic design. Even as times change, however, the Alettos stay grounded in their
family history and their gift for immaculate art.
EF Collection
Taking inspiration from her background in Art History and worldly travels, Emily Faith launched
her fine jewelry collection, EF Collection, in 2010. Staying true to her personal aesthetic, Emily sets
out to create delicate pieces that can be worn and enjoyed daily with a chic, sexy and feminine feel.
Focusing on the use of 14 karat gold subtly handset with diamonds and precious stones, EF
Collection is a distinctive combination of understated glamour and simple elegance. Emily puts
her own twist on architectural, geometric and classic forms striking a beautiful balance between
‘of the moment’ relevance and timeless design. While each piece stands alone, they are enhanced
when mixed, matched, layered, and stacked.
“I design for the everyday woman and draw inspiration from the world around me - Art, Fashion,
Travel, Nature, Friends. I try to put an unexpected twist on classic forms keeping my pieces feeling
current yet timeless. For me, less is more. While my pieces are delicate my hope is that they still
make an impact. Whether paired with jeans and a tee or a cocktail dress my ultimate goal is to
make women feel beautiful on the outside, in turn allowing their inner confidence to truly shine!”
and stones which appear to be made for one another. People say we
design jewelry for those who expect the unexpected. Suffice to say,
in embracing variety and a passion for innovation, our designs are
truly one of a kind. Etho Maria designs are dynamic, expressing the
aesthetic values the world of fine jewelry considers timeless. Each
piece has a charm all of its own, a timeless value which makes them
the ideal choice of the eclectic customer.
Picchiotti Jewelry
The storied past of Italy’s preeminent high-jeweler, Picchiotti,
the premier jeweler of Italy. The Valenza atelier produces masterful
miniature works of art with élan for its appreciative fans. Picchiotti’s
the family opposed his goal of entering the jewelry trade. Yet, at
age 13, he apprenticed as a goldsmith and never looked back. Today
the legendary family endeavor is precious-run by Picchiotti, a highly
respected connoisseur of fine colored gemstones and diamonds,
and seven family members: A charismatic, multi-generation group
Serafino Consoli
Serafino Consoli was established in 1959 in a small jewelry store
in the province of Bergamo, in the north of Italy, which still bears
the name of its founder Serafino Consoli. Sixty years of history
dedicated to a love for art and design.
In the nineties, Serafino’s son Ivan took the place of his father
and began an important process of renewal and expansion of
the company. Ivan Consoli began working increasingly alongside
his father Serafino, progressively taking over the reins of the
company. Working with him today are his sisters Nadia and
Raffaella, who share their brother Ivan’s vision and support him
in his strategic and business decisions.
The site of their creations is in Grumello del Monte, in the
province of Bergamo, in a revolutionary and innovative
architectural space. The brand’s innovative vision was launched
in 2011, precisely at the same time as the opening of its new
headquarters, which is a one-of-a-kind place where a taste for
excellence meets technology and design. This architectural space
was created to represent the dynamism of our patents and their
components.
VHERNIER
Since its establishment in Italy in 1984, contemporary jeweler
VHERNIER has stood out through its sophisticated creations and
relentless search for excellence. The tradition of the designers
at VHERNIER, who meticulously sculpt each item of jewelry by
hand, is combined with a breath of modern art, making each
piece unique, understated and exquisite, whilst always offering
incomparable modernity and elegance.
The materials used - precious gemstones, ebony, jet or pink gold -
and audacious volumes, perfectly combine to portray a wonderfully
sensual feeling to the touch, as well as an avant-garde spirit. An
unparalleled passion and expertise in gemstones allows VHERNIER
to offer stones of great beauty, whilst the design, so extremely
pure, unveils the very essence of the jewelry.
The stones are expertly worked in various combinations; mother-ofpearl
and rock crystal, complex two-point diamonds, or a harmonious
blend of ebony and diamonds, all of which embody the exclusive signature style of VHERNIER.
Only the most beautiful and pure materials will suffice. Rings are designed as sculptures in their own right, with statement silhouettes,
contrasts between volume and visual subtlety. Instead of constantly searching to add more, VHERNIER believes in stripping back to
reveal a profoundly noble natural design. Year after year, VHERNIER reaffirms - always with the same stringency, coherence, original
personality and resolute modernity - a renewed spirit.
Behind The Scenes of Assael’s Latest Pearl Quest
“Exciting, interesting, grueling, inspiring, exhausting and … I loved every minute of it!” Christina Assael describes
her recent pearl buying trip as one for the record books. Flying time from longest 21 hours NY – LA – Fiji to the
shortest Hong Kong – Osaka 5 hours, with “my ears literally hurting when I got off the last flight from Tokyo to
New York – crazy” and visiting four countries, pearl farmers, suppliers and friends, Mrs. Assael found a wealth
of magnificence on this particular treasure hunt!
Fiji – A Dream of Colors
Starting out in Fiji, Mrs. Assael enjoyed the exquisite
Savusavu Bay, a beautiful body of water created by a
volcanic crater. “The water is crystal clear, and the pearl
farm nets are bobbing nicely in the water,” she explains.
The region is not yet commercialized. The local people are
lovely and happy to see visitors from other parts of the
world. “It’s like Hawaii 75 years ago.” The nature of Fiji is
wild and unspoiled. The volcanic islands are made of high
peaks and low valleys creating breathtaking views from
almost anywhere you look. “I stayed at the beautiful Jean-
Michel Cousteau Resort on the island of Savusavu. Perfect
place to get rid of massive jet-lag and relax!”
Local pearl farmer Justin Hunter of Fiji Pearls is Assael’s
supplier in Fiji. Justin, his wife Leanne and assistant
Oudette took Mrs. Assael out on the crystal clear clean
water, to see the pearl nets, and pointed out giant clams on
the bottom of the bay. Hunter has created an eco-friendly,
sustainable, co-op among the local villages at the edge of
the magnificent Savusavu Bay, allowing each to tend to a
few nets from his pearl farms. As those nets produce pearls,
they generate income for the locals. It is Hunter’s
way of giving back to the community. The nets
hang down in the water from buoys, “like an
oyster apartment building going down,” explains
Christina. Each net is divided into pockets and
each pocket contains an oyster that is growing
a pearl. A farm is like a natural reef where
barnacles and marine parasites grow. In turn,
that attracts a myriad of fish that feed off them.
A natural symbiosis and a perfect, sustainable
way to produce beautiful pearls.
And the pearls in Fiji did not disappoint.
“Fijian pearls are a sub specie of the Pinctada
Margaritifera called Typica. Clean, vibrant
colors that you don’t find anywhere else, and
their luster is amazing.” She found every shape
desirable – round pearls and baroques, perfect
for making necklaces, as well as off-round, keshi,
button shapes – all perfect for earrings, rings and
necklaces. These wonderful Fiji pearls include
almost any hue you can imagine, from blue, pink,
pistachio, chocolate brown and green to shades
reminiscent of precious metals – gold, silver,
copper – “a euphoria of colors,” she exclaims.
“The luster of the Fiji pearls is wonderful. With
the colors being as vibrant as they are, the high
luster makes them shimmer and shine and …
well, everything you want a pearl to do!”
The Australian South Sea pearl oyster (Pinctada
the magnificent white South Sea pearl, the largest
and most valuable of all nacreous pearls. Any
pearl buying pursuit is incomplete without a stop in
Australia. “I love Australia,” Christina remarks. “This
time the visit – only two nights – was far too short.”
But in the two days she was there, she was a treasure
magnet. She found the “most amazing gem pearls” –
very large and impressive baroques and South Sea
pearls of fantastic quality. She had time to visit family
Some people compare Hong Kong to New York, and
they are both incredibly dynamic. But Hong Kong is
like a whirlwind. “You can feel the wealth everywhere
there. It is breathtaking. I love and adore Hong Kong
for a visit, but New York has been home for many
years.” The annual Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair
is vast, an enormous gathering of gem, pearl and
jewelry designers/suppliers. It is far too large to visit
in its entirety. Mrs. Assael visited the areas where
her interests lie and visited new and old suppliers of
precious stones and other materials. The Asia World
Expo, another concurrent show, is the place to source
any and all materials you might ever need for making
fine jewelry. “The expo is the most encompassing show
you can imagine.” When walking the halls of such
shows and meeting with international jewelry dealers,
it is easy to identify trends.
Japan – Kobe is Not Just About Beef
Last stop on this stimulating expedition was Japan.
Kobe is known for Akoya pearls of exceptional
quality, and if you know where to visit, you find
other uncommon and difficult to source pearls.
True to her company’s mission, Mrs. Assael seeks
ALOR Celebrates 40 Years in Business
This year, the California lifestyle brand
ALOR celebrates its 40th year in
business. From humble beginnings as
a gold wholesale company, ALOR has
managed to find worldwide success by
creating unique designs using cable, 18
karat gold, and diamonds. Now with
over 300 points of distribution across
the globe, ALOR has carved out their
place as the world leader in fine cable
jewelry.
To celebrate their 40th anniversary,
ALOR has created four limited edition
cuff bracelets. Only forty of each cuff
will be made for a grand total of 160
in all. The design of each cuff bracelet
takes inspiration from popular elements
used in decades past to create a true
retrospective of the company’s history.
Each limited edition bracelet will be
sent in custom packaging that includes
a certificate of authenticity signed by
the owner of ALOR.
In addition to the anniversary cuffs,
ALOR is happy to present their new
64 Charmed 2019
Fall Collection which will be offered exclusively in
Baltimore at Radcliffe Jewelers this September. This
year’s collection places a strong emphasis on the
use of color and the way each color of cable creates
a different tone in each piece of jewelry. Marilyn
Harrell, the Creative Director and Executive Vice
President of ALOR speaks on the brand’s use of color
and says “It used to be if you wanted to have color
in your jewelry wardrobe, it would be reserved to
stones. Now it’s in our material, it’s what we do, and
it’s what we’re famous for. You can design a piece
and change the color and it changes the personality
of the piece.”
One of the showstoppers of the Fall Collection is the
brand new wave see-through bracelet. In order to
create the wave shape that is the foundation of the
design, ALOR had to create a new tool as well as a
new technique to manufacture them. Each cable on
the bracelet must be wound around a special forming
tube into the wave shape and formed at 720 degrees
for over an hour for the shape to take hold. Due to
the labor intensive and newly founded technique, this
design is exclusive to ALOR. The bracelets are made
with either three or five rows of cable and are offered
in six different color combinations.
The popular Chain Reaction category also received a
hearty expansion. This year, ALOR used the Chain
Reaction collection to showcase their take on the
dainty, layering trend that has recently emerged.
Again, using an array of colors, ALOR created single
stranded chain bracelets and necklaces with single
diamond stations that give the ultimate laid-back,
cool and casual look.
Marilyn Harrell credits the brand’s success to their
approach that focuses on creating a special feeling
that resonates with ALOR lovers as soon as they see
a particular piece of jewelry. “We make jewelry by
hand, we’re artisans. We make each piece of jewelry
for that one lady who bought it because it made her
happy and she found it to be unique and interesting,
just like her. Each piece says a lot about the lady that
wears it.”
Through innovation, dedication, and determination,
ALOR has built a legacy that will stand the test of
time. The jewelry and watches they create are a
testament to the idea of creating pieces that not only
look beautiful, but importantly, they make the wearer
feel beautiful.
Jewelry
Care Tips
Caring for your jewelry is important.
Here are some tips to remember.
Live by this rule:
Last on, first off. Jewelry should be the last thing
you put on after you get dressed and the first
thing you take off. This way you won’t break
a necklace when removing a sweater or shirt.
Hairsprays, lotions and perfumes can be harmful
to some gemstones. Make sure you put on your
jewelry after spritzing and spraying.
Never put your jewelry in your checked luggage.
Always pack it in your carry on so it’s with you at
all times.
Remove jewelry (especially rings) before
showering, exercising, cleaning or cooking.
Make sure your jewelry is insured.
Fine jewelry should be checked every 6-12 months to ensure gemstones are safe and prongs are secure.
Stop by either Radcliffe location for a complimentary analysis of your jewelry.
Focusing on the Everyday with Phillips House
Phillips House redefines the way fine jewelry should be worn, with a focus on the everyday. When designers Lisa
Frankel and Danielle Nemiroff took their private bespoke design business and launched the brand, they did so with
the idea of giving every woman versatility and allowing them to wear jewelry their own way. This philosophy is ever
present in the brand’s newest collections: Aura, Enchanted and Link.
Au·ra /_ôr_ə/ [noun] the distinctive atmosphere or quality that seems to surround and be generated by a person, thing, or
place. The Aura Collection features unique rippled gold radiating outward from diamonds, emulating this naturally occurring
aura. “Our new Aura Collection brings gold to the center stage. We are so well known for our beautiful pave diamond work, it
is nice to complement the diamonds with this stunning gold,” says Danielle. “The ridges in the gold allow the pieces to have an
unmatched sparkle. It really gives this big look to every piece,” says Lisa. “With items in the collection ranging from everyday
staples to statement pieces, there is something for everyone.”
68 Charmed 2019
Phillips House’s new collection, Enchanted, encourages customers
to escape into an everyday fairytale. The sophisticated
silhouettes and use of larger stones gives each piece a truly
magical feel. Utilizing diamonds and predominately feminine
colored stones, this elevated collection transforms the wearer
into her own jewelry wonderland. “The collection features
round diamonds set in three prongs, with each diamond set
differently to allow every stone to be showcased in its own
unique light – just like the wearer,” says Lisa. “By offering the
collection in both diamonds and colored gemstones, you can
create your own fairy tale,” says Danielle.
The Link Collection is all about accessorizing every day. Featuring
the brand’s signature Infinity disc, all of the pieces layer
perfectly with Phillips House’s other signature collections.
The still nature of the design – a unique approach for Phillips
House – brings a rich look to each piece and component.
Each of Phillips House’s new collections offers the wearer a
way to redefine their everyday jewelry wardrobe. As Lisa
likes to say, “every day is worth celebrating.”
Living the Dream
Meet Angie Crabtree
I first had the pleasure of meeting artist Angie Crabtree at
a jewelry trade show back in 2015 when her larger than
life paintings of diamonds drew me into her booth. Since
meeting her I’ve been following her career via Instagram and
recently became obsessed with her opal and colored stone
paintings.
This past summer, Angie spent some time on the East Coast
and I had the opportunity to down with her for an interview.
We ended up spending more then two hours together at
Radcliffe, and Angie loved trying on different jewels at our
flagship Maryland location.
Lindsey: What inspired you to
start painting diamonds?
Angie: The first time I
painted a diamond was
for a “Living the Dream”
exhibition. I took small
valuable objects and made
them larger than life. My
first diamond painting
was a five foot princess cut
diamond. It took over 100
hours to complete, I found
the image from Google and
had no gem or diamond
background.
Now I’m heavily involved
in the industry. I received
a private tour of GIA
(Gemological Institute of
America) and would have
loved to attend as a student.
If I could have an art studio
and attend part time, I would
have, but it’s a full time
program so I wouldn’t have
been able to paint enough. I
came into the jewelry world
as an outsider but now I
know a lot about gemology just
from meeting people and being
around it. I go to gem shows multiple
times a year. I get to talk to people and
learn about things. It’s a huge world out
there.
LJ: What is your process?
AC: I don’t keep the gemstones in the studio because they are very,
very valuable. I work from photos and videos and all my canvases
are custom made. I mix all my paints, like 10-20 colors ahead of
time. It takes a long time, but every single piece has such a range
and that is how I can make them so real. Making it as true to life
as possible. About 15 colors go into a “white” diamond, and there
are a few values of grays, blacks and then all the rainbow colors.
I make recipes for every single painting and I have millions of
palettes that I keep from every single one so I can reference my
colors. I hang them all over my wall.
A small painting can take 60 hours and the big ones take up to
300 hours. They take anywhere between 2-6 months to complete.
Each painting takes multiple layers and
each layer takes a few weeks to dry,
and I’m usually rotating between 5-8
paintings at once.
I’ve recently completed an
8-foot painting. It’s my
biggest one to date. It was
really fun…and also difficult
to transport. I had the
panel made so it folds in
half because I had no idea
how I’m going to get this
anywhere. But from here
the paintings are going to get
bigger and bigger.
LJ: You’ve been
commissioned by
Forevermark & Chopard
to paint some of the most
exquisite diamonds. What
is it like working with
these brands?
AC: It was fun because I got
to travel a lot for the first
time. They commissioned
me almost simultaneously
which was insane because I
had to do a lot of paintings
at the same time. It was
very stressful, but the result
was the coolest thing ever.
With both of the companies I
traveled a ton: Boca Raton, Florida
was one of my favorite places to travel
with Forevermark. My favorite place with
Chopard was Mexico City. With Chopard, I attended a fun event
at an amazing St. Regis property. Growing up in rural Northern
California, these were important experiences for me.
Not only did I get the opportunity to travel, but Forevermark
70 Charmed 2019
ought me to charity events. I’m very much for
supporting charities and donating my paintings. One of
my painting sold for $27,000 and the proceeds went to
Type 1 Diabetes. I’ve been living with Type 1 Diabetes since
I was a kid so this really meant a lot to me personally
and professionally. It’s awesome to have the opportunity
to contribute to Type 1 Diabetes just from doing what I
love to do. I didn’t realize that my work could have such
an impact. It was amazing!
LJ: I see that you’ve recently started painting colored
gemstones and opals. What inspired this shift?
AC: For opals, I would say their rawness and organic
nature. In colored gems, the hard-faceted edges and
contrasts.
The colors. I wanted to switch it up and do something
bright and abstract. This isn’t something I bring up a
lot, but my work is also about the patterns and what’s
happening within the gems I am painting. The layers
of abstractions, the beauty in the patterns, shapes and
designs. It’s that which most fascinates me about the gems
I am painting. There’s a lot to see, it all depends on your
vantage point and whether you open the door to seeing it.
LJ: What music do you listen to in the studio?
AC: A lot of west coast artists: Kendrick Lamar, Tyla Yaweh,
Anderson Paak, SiR. I like to represent!
LJ: Do you have a favorite diamond shape or gemstone to
paint?
AC: Opal, for sure. There are so many kinds and I didn’t realize
that until recently. This ring, [showing me a marquise shaped
opal on her finger] is for sure my favorite, and one that I painted.
I even matched my nails to it. It’s a JS Noor marquise opal ring
with pear cut diamonds on the side. Pear cut diamonds are my
favorite diamond shape.
LJ: What is your favorite piece of jewelry in your jewelry
box?
AC: JS Noor opal ring. (Which isn’t in her jewelry box but on
her finger.)
LJ: What piece of art are you most proud of, if you can
name one?
AC: I definitely can, this marquise opal (JS Noor Ring). There’s
actually a story behind this painting. I painted this opal
and I didn’t like the painting at first. I think I just had high
expectations because it’s my favorite piece of jewelry. I could not
get it right and it just sat there for months. Finally, I finished it
and put it in a gallery. I turn on a neon sign in the gallery and
the whole painting glows under the black light. I didn’t know it
would glow at all. I ordered a special paint to get the colors of
the opal only to find out that it glows like an opal glows. It was
a happy accident. It’s so ironic because I didn’t like the painting
at first but now I love it.
LJ: What’s next for Angie Crabtree?
AC: I have so many ideas that I can’t keep up with. I’m going
to do a big show. It will probably be the last Angie Crabtree
show that focuses on gemstones. It’s most likely going to be in
collaboration with Argyle Diamonds. From there my work will
go in a different direction. The overarching theme of “Living the
Dream” will be expressed in a different way.
with RENAISSANCE FINE ARTS
Merritt Miller and Rachel Rubin are sisters
and partners of Renaissance Fine Arts and
Merritt Galleries. Their galleries’ collection
is a diverse mix of unique works from
established to emerging artists, from local
artists to those halfway around the globe.
They invite you to join them on a journey
into the world of fine art.
Tell us a little bit about your galleries.
We kind of “grew up” in the business; our
mother started it over 30 years ago out of our
house. Over the first four years, she opened
our first two gallery locations and frame
shop. Five years later, we opened our third
gallery. Today, our collection resides in three
galleries: Renaissance Fine Arts in Baltimore,
MD, and Merritt Gallery in Chevy Chase,
MD, and Haverford, PA. We are constantly
acquiring new works, which keeps our walls
ever-changing.
How has art buying evolved over the years?
The internet has definitely changed the art
business, and has opened doors for people
buying art. We’re always looking for new
ways to stay on top of digital trends.
Over the past several years we revamped
our website to make it as easy as possible
to search for and buy art online. We also
offer a “virtual presentation” service–once
you select a piece online, you can have it
Photoshopped into an image of your space.
These tools have been very helpful for
our busy and out of town clients. With our
ever-expanding online presence, we have
broadened our client base to include art
collectors from all over the globe.
That said, the most important aspects of our
business have remained the same over time:
a carefully curated collection of artwork,
personalized art consulting, and white glove
service from start to finish.
What is the philosophy behind what you do?
We believe that art can alter your world.
We bring together a cultivated collection
of talented artists from near and far. By
supporting our artists, we allow them to do
what they love: create art. For our clients,
our goal is to help build unique collections
or find pieces that reflect their personality.
January-Garnet
Garnet, which is commonly known for its deep red
coloring, can also be found in a range of colors. A
durable gemstone, garnet jewelry can be traced as
far back as the Bronze age and was very popular
among the ancient Egyptians who believed garnet
was the symbol of life. Garnet is believed to bring
peace, prosperity and health to the wearer. It also
symbolizes deep and lasting friendships.
March- Aquamarine
With the coloring of the sea, it is no surprise the
name aquamarine means sea. Aquamarine’s color
varies from greenish-blue to blue-green. With its
strong roots to the sea, the stone was believed to
protect sailors and promise a safe voyage. It is also
said the coloring helps cool the temper of the wearer.
In ancient times, the powder of aquamarine was
used to cure infections, in particular those of the eye.
February- Amethyst
Amethyst is found in every corner of the world. Its
name derives from an Ancient Greek term, which
means intoxicated, and it is believed to protect its
wearer from drunkenness. Commonly known for
its purple color, amethyst can range from a light
pinkish violet to a deep purple. For many years it
was held in the same regard as diamonds until its
abundance was discovered.
April-Diamond
Thought to be one of nature’s hardest substances, the
name diamond means invincible. Diamonds come
in all shades of colors, including blue, black, pink,
green, purple and yellow. Diamonds are not only
a “girls’ best friend” but the symbol of eternal love.
Many ancient theories believed that diamonds were
the tears of gods and held great healing powers.
May-Emerald
Emerald means green in Greek, which is the perfect
name for this green gemstone. A symbol for rebirth,
emeralds are believed to grant the wearer good
fortune and youth. Cleopatra is well known for her
love of emeralds, claiming ownership of all emerald
mines during her reign. In ancient times, it was
believed that an emerald could stop bleeding and
cure stomach problems. Today, it is the symbol of
loyalty, new beginnings and peace.
July- Ruby
Roberto Coin Byzantine Ring
Rubies have been treasured throughout history for
their color and vitality. With its deep red color,
rubies have been associated with life force and
vitality of blood. With many references throughout
history, rubies are often believed to be the most
popular birthstone.
June-Pearl
Pearls are created by mollusks and the only
gemstone created by living creatures. Only two
groups of mollusks or clams use mother-of-pearl
to create the pearls that are used in jewelry. The
natural luster of a pearl does not require any
polishing. The rarest pearls are natural pearls,
which are made in the wild without any human
interference.
Pearls have been regarded for centuries. The ancient
Greeks believed pearls were the tears of gods, while
ancient Japanese tales said pearls were the tears of
mermaids. Chinese civilizations thought dragons
carried pearls between their teeth. To obtain a pearl
one must slay a dragon.
Tudor England was also known as the Pearl Age
because of the popularity of pearls amongst the
upper class. Many portraits from that time show
royals and the upper-class wearing pearl jewelry.
Mikimoto Necklace
The Story of the Ruby by Roberto Coin
The ruby has always been enveloped in a legendary
aura, and due to its exceptional quality of maintaining
beauty throughout time it is considered eternal, like true
love. According to an ancient belief, wearing a ruby close
to the skin promoted long life, health and happiness.
Even today it is believed to possess these magic powers
including the extraordinary ability of giving peace. In
1996, Roberto Coin started signing his jewels by setting a
small ruby hidden on the inside of each piece, allowing
the distinguished gem to kiss the skin.
August-Peridot
With its lime green glow, peridot is known as the
“evening emerald.” Peridot is often associated with
prosperity and good fortune.
Ancient Egyptians believed that wearing a peridot
would protect one from terrors of the night and
earned its name “gem of the sun.”
Peridot is formed deep inside the Earth’s
mantle. It is brought to the surface by
volcanos. Peridot once symbolized the
tears of the goddess of fire, Pele, who
controls the flow of lava.
September-Sapphire
When people think of sapphire they mostly think of
it as having a royal blue color. Sapphires actually
come in all colors of the rainbow (except red, which
is a ruby). Sapphires are believed to instill wisdom,
loyalty and nobility.
Popular since the Middle Ages, sapphires symbolized
heaven and were worn by Greeks when seeking
answers from the oracle. Buddhists believed the
sapphire brought spiritual enlightenment and
Ancient Hebrews believed the Ten Commandments
were engraved on tablets of sapphire.
November- Citrine
Citrine gets its name from the citron fruit because of
its lemon inspired shades. In ancient times, citrine
was believed to calm tempers, soothe anger and
manifest desires, especially prosperity. With that in
mind, Egyptians often used citrines as talismans and
Roman priests featured citrine stones in rings.
October- Opal
The word opal comes from the Greek word “opallios”
which means to see a change in color. Precious
opals live up to its name. They are composed of
microscopic silica spheres that diffract light to
display various colors. For centuries, people have
associated opals with good luck.
Arabic legend claims opals fell from the sky in bolts
of lightning while Australian lore believed the creator
came to Earth on a rainbow and left behind these
precious stones.
December-Blue Topaz
Topaz comes in a variety of colors, but its blue
shade is the birthstone of December. During the
Renaissance time period, people thought topaz could
break spells. Hindus regarded topaz as a sacred
stone, bringing wisdom and longevity to one’s life.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande
Tradition Gyrotourbillon
Westminster Perpétuel
Jaeger-LeCoultre introduces the Master
Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon Westminster
Perpétuel. This is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s most
recent multi-axis tourbillon to emerge since
the 2016 Reverso Tribute Gyrotourbillon. The
latest Gyrotourbillon features a tourbillon
that is significantly smaller than those in the
previous timepieces. Reducing the size of the
mechanism also reduces its error tolerance,
which is why successful miniaturization
efforts are so highly valued and complex.
Ask Erik
Dear Erik,
I’m looking to start building my watch
collection. What entry level watch to do
recommend to get started?
Getting started can be daunting or intimidating
with so many options. The searching for the ‘right
piece’ should be a pleasant experience, for when
you open that box and put the watch on for the
first time, it should convey the joy of discovery
with the feeling of accomplishment. There is no wrong answer
for the initial purchase, as what makes each of us happy
varies, so…that being said….I think a highly reliable timepiece
that affords one the opportunity to wear for dress or sport is a
great way to get started. Regardless on the aesthetic that calls
out to the individual, I believe TAG Heuer is a great place to
start with a plethora of options.
Dear Erik,
Why do brands make such a big deal about
their in-house movements? Are they really
that special?
Much in the same way your parents would
pull out snapshots from their wallets
to show off back in the day, the watch
manufactures are extremely proud of their
accomplishments. Creating, developing, and finally
manufacturing a new in-house movement takes years
of work, dedication, research, trials and testing. The
work that goes into these movements builds upon the
foundation of horology and helps drive curiosity and
wonder at these extremely complicated endeavors of
engineering. As technology improves, new materials
become available, and better techniques to implement
previously available components advances, the
manufacturers are pushing the envelope and other
industries similarly. Not every new in-house movement
is raising the bar in measurable ways, but each step
and improvement pushes the industry and technology
with it.
Ask Erik
Dear Erik,
What is your favorite watch
introduction of 2019?
Every year there are debuts which set the
internet spinning. The years of R&D and
product development; the culmination
of changed, altered, or completely
redesigned pieces are largely lost as we
only see the final product. There are so
many pieces every year that are worthy
of acclaim and the best new debut is
highly debatable. Breitling, inspired
by their history, created some future
classics from the historical Premier and
Navitimer lines. Nothing better captured
its past while embracing the future than
the Navitimer 1959 Re-Edition 806.
Glossary
Chronograph: Is a device that measures elapsed time. Simply, a stop watch. With a second hand independent
of the watch’s timekeeping, it rotates one revolution a minute, and can be started, stopped, and returned to zero
by buttons on the caseband. Totalizers can be used to display total elapsed time from minutes into hours, and
even days.
Horology: The science of measuring time and technology of constructing instruments for its measurement or
recording.
Manufacture: In the Swiss watch industry, this French term names companies where the watch manufacturer
produces in-house all the major parts and components of a watch. Opposite from a “manufactory” which is
to an “assembler” who merely puts together movements from parts acquired elsewhere, times and adjusts the
movements, and fits on the hands and cases them up. Manufacturers are quite rare, currently less than 10 exist.
Movement: The assembly making up the principal elements and mechanisms of a watch or clock: the winding
and setting mechanism, the mainspring, the train, the escapement, and the regulating elements. Basically, the
engine which drives the watch.
Apollo 11 Lunar Mission 50th Anniversary
Celebrating a Milestone
July 20, 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of
the Moon Landing as part of NASA’s Apollo
11 lunar mission. Two brands celebrated this
monumental anniversary with the release of
special edition pieces.
OMEGA
OMEGA was there when it first happened
back on 1969. When Buzz Aldrin stepped on
the moon’s surface he was wearing an OMEGA
Speedmaster Professional. This watch has been
known as the Moonwatch ever since.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon
landing, OMEGA launched a new limitededition
watch inspired by Apollo 11.
This commemorative watch has notable
features referencing Apollo 11 and the
Moon Landing. The 11 o’clock index
is a tribute to Apollo 11’s mission
number. A subdial at 9 o’clock
shows Buzz Aldrin climbing onto the
moon’s surface. The back of the watch
features an astronaut’s footprint on
the lunar surface surrounded by Neil
Armstrong’s legendary quote.
Montblanc
To honor the inspirational quest of space
exploration and the 50th anniversary of the
Moon Landing, Montblanc introduced the new
StarWalker collection. The translucent blue
dome beneath the iconic Montblanc emblem
is meant to evoke the earth rising above the
moon’s horizon.
Panerai Enhances its Collection
of Professional Diving Watches
PANERAI’S COLLECTION OF PROFESSIONAL DIVING
WATCHES IS ENHANCED BY TWO MODELS IN
STAINLESS STEEL, WITH AN APPLIED CERAMIC
DISC ON THE ROTATING BEZEL WHICH GIVES THESE
NEW CREATIONS A SPORTY LOOK, POWERFUL AND
CONTEMPORARY, SUITABLE FOR ANY WRIST SINCE
THE CASE DIAMETER IS JUST 42 MM.
Two new Panerai Submersibles in cases 42 mm diameter
– an impressive size, consistent with the Panerai DNA,
but suitable for any wrist – express all the power and
personality of the professional diving watches made
by Panerai, which for many years supplied precision
instruments to the commandos of the Italian Navy.
Strong, functional, tough and with the immediately
recognizable Panerai personality, the two new
Panerai Submersibles are fitted with the OP XXXIV
Manufacture calibre, an automatic movement with a
power reserve of three days, the basic standard of the
House’s movements. Both models have an AISI 316L
stainless steel case, with the iconic device protecting
the winding crown and the unidirectional rotating bezel
for displaying the duration of the dive, and they are
water-resistant to a depth of 300 metres (30 bar).
The difference between the two new Panerai Submersibles
lies in their color schemes. In the first (PAM00683)
the dial, the ceramic disc on the rotating bezel and
the rubber strap are all black, with luminous white
markers clearly legible under all lighting conditions
and in complete darkness; the second (PAM00959)
stylishly combines a blue ceramic disc surrounding
the dial and a blue rubber strap with a distinctively
textured shark grey dial. In both models the small
seconds hand, essential for checking that the watch
is running during a dive, is Panerai blue and rotates
in the subsidiary dial at 9 o’clock, symmetrical with
the date at 3 o’clock. As well as the rubber strap, these
Panerai Submersible watches are supplied with a spare
strap of high-tech material, tough and water-resistant.
Baume & Mercier Introduces
five Clifton Baumatic Watches
The five Clifton Baumatic watches, powered
by the BM13 version of the Baumatic
Calibre, combine performance, technical
achievement and refined design. They
express a combination of watchmaking
expertise and contemporary style, which
has characterized the Baume & Mercier
approach for 189 years.
The dial of each Clifton Baumatic model is
enhanced by an oversized date aperture at 3
o’clock and topped with a domed anti-glare
crystal to ensure better readability.
The sapphire crystal case back reveals
the calibre’s refined finishes: circulargrained
bridges and a sand-blasted, snailed
baseplate. The open worked, steel- or goldtoned
tungsten oscillating weight is adorned
with a decoration combining Côtes de Genève
with snailing. Within the movement, the
lyre is shaped like the Phi character, the
Baume & Mercier symbol representing the
Maison’s quest for perfection.
The interchangeable leather straps of the
Clifton Baumatic collection enable each on
to adapt to various whims.
The self-winding Baumatic movement
ensures optimal reliability. In addition to
120 hours (5 days) of autonomy, Clifton
Baumatic watches offer great chronometric
precision (-4/+6 seconds per day for the
COSC-certified models). They resist to the
main magnetic fields of daily life. These
models only require maintenance service
once every seven years rather than three
to five years recommended for a traditional
watch.
Dressing for today’s man can be a challenge!
Dressing for most men has become more challenging - how dressy or casual do
you go when trying to look your best?
We at J. S. Edwards have noticed men asking us what to wear to a party,
business event or dinner. With the world becoming more casual in the
workplace and at social affairs, it can be a difficult decision. To answer this
dilemma, we begin with a few basic rules of dressing:
First, it is better to be overdressed than under dressed. If you are unsure of the
attire, always err on the dressier side.
Second, it is important to consider the venue for the event, dinner or
business affair. If the event will be held in the evening at an upscale hotel,
khakis and sneakers may not be the right look. A jacket with nice slacks
will be more appropriate – these are never out of place for business or dressier
social affairs.
J. S. Edwards is proud to partner with Peter Millar for all of your apparel needs.
Peter Millar was founded in 2001 with a single cashmere sweater. With this initial
garment, an ethos emerged to embody European aesthetics and an American
sensibility, through luxury elegance and a dedication to superior craftsmanship.
Today, the brand has grown to include seasonal golf apparel, refined tailored
clothing, luxury performance sportswear and sartorial accessories. Each offering
features the finest raw materials and fabric innovations while utilizing the
world’s best yarn spinners, artisanal workshops and highly specialized factories.
Peter Millar designs clothing for the modern gentleman who has a discerning
eye for sophisticated style and innovation. Enriched yarns featured throughout
each line of apparel represent some of the best yarn spinners in the world. This
is evinced in varying gauges and microns of the finest merino wool, cashmere
and silk compositions, all of which are derived from artisan mills and factories
throughout Italy and London.
Radcliffe Roadshow
Radcliffe founder, Paul Winicki, finds fame and treasures on PBS’s Antiques Roadshow
With a passion for antique American silver, Radcliffe’s very own Paul Winicki has helped unknowing guests find treasures
that have been hiding right under their noses on the PBS series Antiques Roadshow. Antiques Roadshow, which
kicks off its 24th season in 2020, is the 17-time Emmy ® Award-nominated program and PBS’s most watched series.
Paul has toured with the television show for 13 years. His expertise is in antique pocket watches and wristwatches,
antique American silver, as well as furniture from the early 19th century to the early 20th century.
Here’s a look at some of Paul’s finds on Antiques Roadshow.
1874 Rolex Submariner Wristwatch
2018 Value $28,000 Retail
18 Karat Gold Pocket Watch, CA. 1885
2010 Value $25,000-$30,000 Retail
Swiss Watch Collection, CA 1970
2013 Value $46,000-$57,000 Retail
A woman received a Rolex watch from her father to
pass down to one of her kids. She knows the watch
needs to get repaired and brought it to Antiques
Roadshow to see if it is worth getting fixed. Her
father worked on the Alaskan pipeline and wore
the watch for several years.
Paul determines that the watch was made in 1974.
Interestingly, the woman’s father kept every single
thing he got when he bought the watch, including
the box, tag with serial number, warranty and paperwork.
What really makes the watch interesting
is the feet-first dial. The dial notes feet before meters
in regards to waterproof. Another interesting
thing noted by Paul is the fact that “Submariner”
is written in red instead of white and that was
only done for a few years. Paul determines that
the watch is worth approximately $28,000 and
the owner thinks something like that is definitely
worth getting repaired!
A family-heirloom turns out to be a masterpiece
of horology, supposedly made by the guest’s great,
great, great-grandfather with Jules Jurgensen. Despite
a disparity in the date in the letter accompanying
the watch, the market value of the watch is
between $25,000 and $30,000.
1949 Model 4500 Rolex & Silver Box
2018 Value $71,000 Retail
A father’s watch collection is discovered in
a cardboard box. The box contains watches
by Patek Philippe, two Audemars Piguet
watches, an 18-karat gold Blancpain, a
Cartier Santos and a Rolex Datejust. The
guest was anticipating a value of a couple
thousand dollars. Paul reveals that the box
contains between $46,000 to $57,000 worth
of watches!
A great uncle was in the Air Force and a fighter pilot in World War II. Along with a presentation
box and a picture with his commanding officer, Jimmy Stewart, the guest brought along a Rolex,
which catches Paul’s attention. The Rolex is a model 4500 anti-magnetic watch. One of the few
Rolex chronographs that only has a 30-minute registry. The watch was built in 1949 and even
today the dial is in pristine condition. Paul appraised the presentation box at $1000 and watch
at $70,000.
Shopping for an engagement ring can feel overwhelming but it doesn’t have to
be. Our engagement ring guide is meant to help you get started in the process.
112 Charmed 2019
Asscher- A cut of diamond which
is closely related to emerald-cut
diamonds, except that they are square.
Asschers have the same rectangular
facets, which create a unique optical
appearance, as well as, highlight the
clarity.
Facets-The flat polished surfaces of a cut gemstone or
diamond.
Gemstone-No one said you have to have a diamond as
the center stone. Sapphires and rubies are other popular
options for the focal point of an engagement ring.
Halo Setting- A ring where small diamonds surround
the center diamond or gemstone.
Inclusions-Natural birthmarks inside a stone or
diamond that can affect how light is dispersed through
the stone. Inclusions can vary in size, shape, quantity,
position and color.
Brilliance - The total light reflected
from the diamond. This gives the
diamond its sparkle.
Jewelry-This will surely become their favorite piece of
jewelry!
C’s (4 to be exact)-The 4 C’s refers to
the criteria used in grading a diamond-
Carat, Color, Clarity & Cut.
Diamond - The hardest known natural
mineral. The most popular gemstone
used in engagement rings.
Karat- A unit of measure for the purity of gold and
other metals.
Love-Remember that this piece of jewelry symbolizes
your love for one another.
Marriage-After the proposal, comes marriage!
Emerald-cut diamonds- Emerald-cut
diamonds are distinguished by their
different shaped pavilion, which is cut
with rectangular or step-cut facets.
These facets are parallel to one another,
as opposed to brilliant-cut-facets, which
have opposing facets that mirror each
other.
113 Charmed 2019
Near colorless- Near colorless diamonds usually fall
between G-J on the color scale (part of the 4 C’s).
Color will be difficult to detect, unless compared
to a diamond with a higher color grade. Sometimes
there is a presence of a slightly detectable warmth
or undertone.
Solitaire- A type of setting
with a single stone.
No side stones are in
a solitaire setting.
Trust-Find someone you trust to guide you
through this process.
Oval-cut diamonds- Oval-cut diamonds
have brilliant facets similar to round
diamonds. Ovals can vary in their
length to width ratio.
Platinum- A durable precious metal, valued for its
white color, purity and durability.
Question-Don’t forget to think about how you are
going to pop the question!
Unique-Like a fingerprint, each diamond
is unique and each has different qualities
that influence its beauty and value.
Vintage- A style of ring that will typically
have a lot of hand engravings, milgrain
beading, intricate metal work and many
micro pave set diamonds.
Weight- The weight of a diamond is
measured in carats. A carat is divided
into 100 points, similar to how a dollar is
divided into 100 pennies.
XOXO-Hugs and kisses to celebrate the
engagement.
Ring finger-It is said that the engagement ring goes
on the left finger (fourth finger) because ancient
Romans believed that the vein in the left ring finger
goes directly to the heart.
Yellow diamonds- Diamonds come in all
different colors including yellow, pink,
black and blue to name a few.
Zen-How the team at Radcliffe will make
you feel during the engagement ring
shopping process!
Engaged
Pheabe & Jonathan
Where did you meet?
We met at Boston College!
Please describe the proposal.
He surprised me with a weekend trip to California (I’m originally from the Bay Area and now
live in NYC). One of our first trips together was down to Carmel, a charming seaside town. He
wouldn’t tell me anything about the trip until the night we left. Saturday morning, he took me
on mini-winery tour with custom tastings. For our late lunch he had arranged this incredible
picnic on the beach. We enjoyed the charcuterie and wine while appreciating the gorgeous
weather. It was supposed to rain all weekend but the sun luckily came out for us. He asked me
to take a walk along the beach and right by the water he proposed!
What was the first thing you did after you got engaged?
He had hired a photographer to capture the moment and right after we took
some more engagement photos. After, he had arranged a dinner at
Aubergine where Justin Cogley (James Beard awarded executive
chef) actually came out to serve one of our dishes!
Have you picked a date? Venue? Theme?
We plan on a longer engagement since he is finishing
up medical school and wants to finish residency prior
to our wedding. We have a trip to Positano in May and
will likely look at venues there!
What is something you and your fiancé like to do
together?
We both love food, wine & travel. We love finding new
restaurants but we also love cooking in. And working
out, to balance out all that wine & food! :-)
Will you be taking a honeymoon? If so, where and
why did you pick that destination?
Tbd!
What is a fun fact about you as a couple?
We actually met in Italian class!
Engaged
Jill & Claire
Where did you meet?
We met at a rugby tournament in the summer of 2015.
Please describe the proposal.
For our 4-year anniversary we planned to visit the beautiful state park called
Cloudland Canyon in Rising Fawn, GA. We almost didn’t go on the big day, as the
forecast called for rain. I’m so glad we did though, as the weather held out and
it turned out perfectly! Soon after arriving, we passed by a breathtaking vista of
the canyons below, and I decided to pop the question. I had to stall for a minute to
let a family amble by. Claire, however, was completely unaware of my plans and
insisted that we keep hiking! Finally, the family moved on, and we had the place
to ourselves. Claire was standing next to the ledge--in perfect position--waiting for
a photo she thought was to come. I walked up to her, with box in hand, and said,
“I have a very important question to ask you.” Claire finally realized what was
happening and was moved to tears of joy. She gladly said yes! All the sudden, she
was more than happy to delay the hike to pose for pictures and celebrate.
What was the first thing you did after you got engaged?
Continued our hike through the wilderness, and later had a celebratory dinner in
downtown Chattanooga, TN.
Have you picked a date? Venue? Theme?
We have no idea and are a bit overwhelmed (in a good way). Working on it!
What is something you and your fiancé like to do together?
We love to explore new places, events, and experiences together.
Will you be taking a honeymoon? If so, where and why did you pick that
destination?
Yes, but the destination is undecided. Perhaps a classic trip to Europe, or an
adventurous destination like Patagonia, Chile.
What is a fun fact about you as a couple?
Turns out, long before we officially met, Claire and I played rugby against each
other in college. We have old pictures of us tackling each other!
118 Charmed 2019
Engaged
Thy & Alex
Where did you meet?
We met on Tinder and had our first date at Loch Bar in
Baltimore. It was an instant connection.
Please describe the proposal.
Thy- He proposed at home while we were with our dogs.
Alex- It was an heirloom diamond, so Thy knew the proposal
was coming for months while we shopped for bands and
settings together. After we ordered the rings, Alex picked them
up in secret and proposed at home, with the dogs as witnesses,
because he couldn’t wait any longer.
What was the first thing you did after you got engaged?
We called our families and visited my grandmother,
mom, and aunt to let them know the good news. It was
the same day as our friend’s baby’s 1st birthday so we
were able to share the news with everyone in person.
Have you picked a date? Venue?
Theme?
We hope to get married in May 2020, but
nothing else is planned yet.
What is something you and your fiancé like to
do together?
We love traveling, cooking, going to concerts/
movies, and hiking with our dogs.
Will you be taking a honeymoon? If so, where
and why did you pick that destination?
We’re thinking of doing a Thailand, Vietnam,
Cambodia tour; or somewhere in Europe.
119 Charmed 2019
What is a fun fact about you as a couple?
Our second date was at a haunted house, we love
watching scary movies and going to haunted
houses.
Engaged
Lexi & Mike
Where did you meet?
In Baltimore, at Banditos in Federal Hill on the first Sunday of the NFL
season back in 2015, September 13th to be exact. Mike remembers this date
specifically since he is a die-hard football fan, and actually played in college
at Penn State so football is always on his mind.
Please describe the proposal.
He proposed while we were in Siena, Italy in our hotel’s secret garden. The
original proposal was supposed to happen at this beautiful old church in
Tuscany, but once we got there, it was packed with tourists, so Mike had to
improvise the next day. Regardless, it was special just being the two of us
in a romantic outdoor setting in Italy.
What was the first thing you did after you got engaged?
After calling our families, we went to the Piazza Del Campo (central plaza)
to celebrate as the Italians would - by drinking Aperol spritzes and eating
charcuterie.
Have you picked a date? Venue? Theme?
Yes! We’ll be getting married on September 20, 2020 at Chatham Bars Inn
in Cape Cod, MA.
What is something you and your fiancé like to do together?
It sounds like a cliché, but we literally do everything together. A few of
our favorite things are traveling, taking golf lessons (Alexis is starting to
become better than Mike), going to a boxing class every Saturday, and
trying new cuisines and restaurants around Baltimore.
Will you be taking a honeymoon? If so, where and why did you
pick that destination?
Yes, we will use it as another excuse to travel. We are thinking Spain
and Portugal or even back to Bali, since we both loved it so much.
What is a fun fact about you as a couple?
We both come from athletic, competitive backgrounds and have won the
Baltimore Volo City kickball championship three times running.
Happily Ever After
How did you two meet?
Michael and I first met when we were 16 and 17 at a local salon that I used to
work at. He was in getting his hair cut and I happened to catch a glimpse of
him leaving and he caught me saying something to my co-worker and turned
around. About a year later he messaged me on Facebook to let me know he was
in getting his hair cut but that he didn’t see me. Fast forward ten years later…
same stylists, different salon. We were both getting our hair done on separate
days and asked our hair stylist (who also happens to be a close friend) to set
us up with someone. He put us together and the rest is history!
Tell me about the proposal.
I thought it was just another Saturday night dinner out with our best friends.
I worked that day and Mike told me he ran the Baltimore half marathon (later
found out, that didn’t end up happening). I got home from work and we quickly
got ready to head over to the Sagamore Pendry for dinner to meet the other
couple. The hostess sat us at a window table and then my friend texted me
saying they were running late. While we were waiting, someone came up and
told us Mike’s uncle called to let them know we’d be dining tonight and offered
us a tour of the hotel since it was relatively new. I thought it was perfect timing
since our friends were running 20 minutes late anyway! The lady showed us
another bar area, the lobby, and the courtyard, and then told us she was going
to show us the presidential suite. I didn’t think anything of it until the door
opened and I saw candles, flowers, balloons, champagne, etc. Michael walked
outside to the balcony, which was overlooking the harbor and got down on one
knee and asked. Afterwards I looked over and saw my best friend, the one who
was “late for dinner” peaking through the window taking the pictures!! Then
our parents came upstairs to celebrate and we all had dinner together before
heading across the street where I had another big surprise: our best friends
and family waiting for us to party.
What was the inspiration for your wedding day?
We wanted a classic look with neutral tones and flowers.
What was the favorite part of your wedding day?
Our favorite part of the night was when our band had us dancing on stage and
we were able to watch how much fun everyone was having on the dance floor.
Is there anything else that you would like to share about your wedding?
We feel incredibly grateful and lucky to have been able to get married with our
grandmother and Don (our match-maker and friend) present. Unfortunately,
they both passed away recently and our memories with the two of them,
especially on our wedding night, will be cherished forever.
Did you go on a honeymoon? If so, where?
We went to Sri Lanka and the Maldives for two weeks. It was incredible. It was
the perfect blend of adventure, culture and relaxation.
Aries
Adventures await those born under the sign
of Aries this month. This is a great month to
do all those things you have always wanted to
do but never tried. You just may be surprised
at how wonderfully things turn out.
Taurus
Anyone who knows a Taurus knows that they
march to the beat of a different drummer, and
this month is no exception. Instead of trying
to fit in and be like everyone else, you want to
stand out and go your own way.
Gemini
Those born under the sign of the twins are
known for their upbeat personality and
positive outlook. This month is a good time
for the Gemini to show off those qualities
and have a positive impact on others. Share
your favorite activities and hobbies with your
friends and family members this month.
Cancer
This month is a good time for Cancers to
take care of all their needs, both physical and
spiritual. This is a great time to get in touch
with your inner child, so why not let them
out to play?
128 Charmed 2019

Libra
This is a month of decision for those born
under the sign of Libra. It is important to
