TAILOR-MADE FUTURE
FOR LESLEY IN BEDLINGTON
Dressmaking
Bedlington Adult Learning Centre,
based at Jubilee Terrace, is home
to a variety of courses offering the
chance for lifelong learning under
one roof.
Lesley brought along a coat that
she had started sewing when her
daughter was little but had never
had the time to finish. Now that
she has a granddaughter, she
wanted to go back and finish the
heirloom project.
Over the weeks, with the help of
her lecturer and other learners, her
confidence grew and a talent
she always had flourished. She
has now applied for a place at
University where she can continue
learning and take her skills to
the next level.
Lesley’s lecturer said: “We helped
Lesley uncover her talent and
gain confidence.
“She now believes in herself and
has the conviction to apply for
an accredited further educational
course.”
RURAL NORTHUMBERLAND
DISCOVERS DIGITAL
Our Rural Digital Skills
Programme is continuing its
roll out across communities
in Northumberland, giving
residents the opportunity to
develop digital skills in their
own community.
The short programme consists of
weekly two-hour sessions covering
a range of basic digital skills. Over
the four week course you will learn
how to use a computer or tablet
device, access the internet, set
up and use an email account, use
Skype, and access other online
services. This course will not only
support you getting online, but also
how to stay safe online.
At the end of the four weeks there
is an option to progress to a
specialised course focusing on the
development of higher-level skills
such as using a phone or camera, or
to gain recognised qualifications in
digital skills.
The project is already running in
locations across the county, but we
want to run it in new communities
and give more residents access
to training.
All we need is a group of eight
or more learners, and access to a
community building. We’ll bring the
kit, the tutor, and their expertise.
