focused around digital <strong>and</strong><br />
STEM (Science, Technology,<br />
Engineering & Maths) skills,<br />
for example through our<br />
‘Digital Discovery Day’ events<br />
at Fuse Media Centre.<br />
These are areas of learning<br />
that we are continuing<br />
to develop, <strong>and</strong> support<br />
will be on offer through<br />
h<strong>and</strong>s-on workshops <strong>and</strong><br />
industry engagement.<br />

Functional skills – maths <strong>and</strong> English<br />
There are high hopes for a learner<br />
who has shown dedication <strong>and</strong><br />
commitment to gaining their<br />
functional skills qualifications in<br />
maths <strong>and</strong> English.<br />
Joel’s long-term goal is to become a<br />
qualified member of a cabin crew at<br />
Newcastle International Airport.<br />
With a keen drive, <strong>and</strong> the support<br />
of the team at Bedlington, Joel has<br />
successfully achieved his entry-level<br />
<strong>and</strong> level one qualifications <strong>and</strong> has<br />
now progressed on to Level 2. At<br />
the same time he is working in the<br />
food <strong>and</strong> catering industry, giving<br />
him another string to his bow <strong>and</strong><br />
increasing his knowledge around that<br />
aspect of the cabin crew role.<br />
Joel’s lecturer in maths <strong>and</strong> English<br />
said, “Joel is a determined learner <strong>and</strong><br />
is a great example to others.<br />
“He has made steady progress<br />
during his time here at Bedlington. I’d<br />
encourage anyone who has concerns<br />
about maths <strong>and</strong> English to come in<br />
<strong>and</strong> meet us.”<br />
