WITH NEW Year’s resolutions quickly
approaching, there’s no better time to
set yourself a personal goal than at one
City2Surf.
On March 22, the Les Mills City2Surf
will celebrate its 46th running and as
always will have an option for all types
of fitness levels with a 14km and 6km
option.
The 14km event starts at 9am at Pioneer
“The Les Mills City2Surf gives
everyone the outlet to do something for
Neighbour causes
stir on quiet residential street
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
AN INVESTIGATION is under
way into complaints over a large
multi-storey house being built
on a quiet residential street in
Riccarton.
The city council is investigating
concerns it has received from
nearby properties and organisations
over a new house currently
in construction for carpet retailer
and interior design service
Nextdore director Michael Dore
at 36 Rata St
City council’s head of resource
consents John Higgins confirmed
it has received complaints
from four nearby properties
along with concerns raised from
the Riccarton Bush-Kilmarnock
Residents’ Association and the
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board.
The city council confirmed
the house breaches multiple
variations for a residential zone
– including it does not meet the
required finished floor level and
breaches recession planes.
But it argues Mr Dore is able
to use the previous on-site townhouse
coverage and consent as a
baseline.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
Mr Higgins said it is an established
principle under the Resource
Management Act - either
known as existing use rights or
existing environment.
When asked by Western News
why the house was designed the
way it was, Mr Dore said: “I don’t
know whether I have a comment
on that, that is a bit like asking
why did you dress in that colour
today”.
Mr Dore said he engaged an
architect and he did not think he
had any comment to add which
would be “advantageous.”
The previous townhouse on
the site was demolished earlier
this year.
The construction of the house
did not have public consultation.
Board chairman Mike Mora
said he is concerned a lack of
consultation is an issue happening
all over the city.
But Mr Higgins said the key
reason it was allowed to go ahead
without consultation was due to
A neighbourhood for
heart of Halswell
Sections from $191,000
its comparison against the previous
house.
The decision said it did not
consider anyone to be adversely
affected by the proposal, nor will
there be adverse effects on the
wider environment.
Resident Peter Hodges said
he was glad he was not directly
neighbouring the building and
described it as “over the top.”
Another resident, who did not
wish to be named, said while
Rata St has a “very friendly
neighbourhood group” the house
has “caused a stir.”
The resident was concerned
it could start to cause a trend
in how buildings can be constructed
in a residential zone.
Mr Higgins confirmed one
variation was approved since the
resource consent for the building
was granted.
But he said there will be a
second one due to discrepancies
between what has been approved
and what has been built so far.
A variation to the balcony and
deck from the living area of the
house was approved. The second
variation for steel fins will be
considered by an independent
commissioner.
A WELL-KNOWN police
officer in Riccarton has retired
after serving for 25 years.
Community Constable Ken
Carter, who had responsibility
for the Riccarton area and
Canterbury University, retired
last month.
Born and raised in Ashburton,
he started as a beat constable
in the central city, before
serving as a response constable
for 12 years.
The remainder of his time
has been as a community
constable in the central city,
Sydenham and Hornby, with
responsibility also for Canterbury
University.
Senior Constable Carter
said he first joined the police
“because it seemed I had a lot
of the traits needed to make a
good policeman.”
“It’s been a very fulfilling
and challenging career, with
lots of variation. I have enjoyed
my time,” he said.
When asked about the challenges
of the job, Senior Constable
Carter said all police
have moments that challenge
them.
“The time of the earthquakes
was a pivotal one for
the city. But the thing I find
hardest is knocking on a door
in the middle of the night to
tell someone they have lost a
END OF AN ERA: Community Constable Ken Carter
loved one.”
Senior Constable Carter said
a particularly satisfying part of
the role has been working with
the university and on noise
control.
“It has been pleasing to
see a change in the drinking
culture.”
Of his retirement, Senior
Constable Carter said: “There
is lots of travel to do, fish to
catch, hills to climb, and water
to slalom water ski.”
Senior Constable Carter’s
role has been taken over by
Senior constable John Stevenson,
who is based at the
Hornby Police Station.
With the Christmas and
New Year holiday season fast
approaching, Senior Constable
Stevenson said people need to
consider the following security
guidelines if they are away:
• Ensure your house is locked
and all the windows are secure.
• Outdoor valuables are locked
away.
• Stop the delivery of your
mail and the newspaper.
• Get to know your neighbours,
tell them you’re going
away, get them to keep an eye
on your house, and get them
to clear your letterbox.
• Lock your car.
• Take your car keys with you.
• Remove valuables from your
car; if you must leave valuables
in your car, keep them out of
sight.
• Remember if you have an
emergency phone 111.
• If it is a non-emergency use
105 to call the police.
• And don’t tell the world on
Facebook that you’re away
from home.
Verbal stoush delays meeting
Christmas
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A HALSWELL-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
meeting was adjourned last
week after a verbal stoush
broke out between two longserving
members.
Chairman Mike Mora and
member Helen Broughton were
at loggerheads at the public
meeting over whether to appoint
board members to various
community organisations.
The conflict started when
Mrs Broughton suggested the
decision be delayed because
city councillor Catherine Chu
and member Gamal Fouda
were absent from the meeting.
Mrs Broughton said the
newer members needed more
time to reflect on what community
organisations they
wanted to be appointed to.
But Mr Mora said he had
emailed out two opportunities
to have the board meet over
the issue before the meeting
on Tuesday but there “wasn’t
an appetite.”
He was supportive of the
board making a decision at the
meeting in spite of Ms Chu
and Mr Fouda being absent.
But Mrs Broughton interjected
telling Mr Mora to
“leave it.”
Mr Mora responded: “Hang
on Helen I am talking. I know
you said leave it but you have
got a very active habit of letting
things lie on the table.”
At that stage Mrs Broughton
called for a point of
order.
“You are uttering
a critical comment
without reason, I
am asking you to
withdraw it,” she
said.
Mr Mora then
withdrew his
comment and continued
to discuss
why the decision
shouldn’t be delayed.
Mrs Broughton’s
formal motion did
not get support
from the community
board.
Said Mr Mora:
“We haven’t got a
seconder . . . we will
go back to the item
that people have
had for periods of
time to respond or
indicate their willingness
to and that
hasn’t happened other than
someone wants to lie on the
table because they can’t make
a decision.”
Mrs Broughton then said
loudly “point of order.”
Helen Broughton
Mike Mora
“I pulled you up earlier on
that. There is no reflection on
me not being able to decide,
it is an attack on an elected
member,’’ she said.
Mr Mora
denied it was an
attack.
Following Mrs
Broughton repeatedly
asking Mr
Mora to withdraw
his comment,
Mr Mora stood
up and asked
Helen “to be quiet
please.”
Mr Mora then
asked community
governance manager
Matthew
Pratt to ask Mrs
Broughton to
leave the meeting.
Mrs Broughton
asked Mr Pratt
to speak to Mr
Mora about the
issue.
The meeting
was adjourned
for about 10
minutes.
Following the adjournment,
Mr Mora withdrew his
comment he made earlier that
“someone wants (the report)
to lie on the table because they
can’t make a decision”.
Put differences
in ‘trash can’ says
board member
DEPUTY BOARD chairman
Andrei Moore, and newly
elected member Mark Peters
want the conflict between
Mrs Broughton and Mr Mora
resolved going forward.
“It is something I would
like to see resolved so we can
get on and do our jobs representing
the community,” Mr
Moore said.
Mr Peters said the conflict
at the meeting was “a bit unnecessary.
“It would be nice to put past
differences in the trash can
on the way in and move on
to work in nice harmonious
ways,” said Mr Peters.
“I don’t believe anyone in
the community wants to see
this going on. It is embarrassing
when you get to that in
public.”
Mr Peters described Mr
Mora as a “well-practised”
chairman and was hopeful
over the next 12 months
the board could work
harmoniously under his
leadership.
Hub will benefit pupils
Rotary supports
• By Kim Thomas
OAKLANDS SCHOOL senior
pupils have moved into a new
high-technology hub with an
interactive television screen,
kitchen, and green room for
video creation.
The new senior hub formerly
housed the school office. It was
completely renovated as part of a
$5 million-plus campus redevelopment
of the school.
Year 7 and 8 pupils moved into
the new hub at the beginning of
this month.
Oaklands School principal
Margaret Trotter said the hub
was an exciting development for
the school and particularly its
most senior students.
The school placed an emphasis
on fostering leadership and innovative
learning in its senior students
and this new space would
enhance this, Mrs Trotter said.
“We know this is a special
age group who in their last two
years of primary schooling add
so much value to the school. All
the students have leadership opportunities
to develop their skills
and abilities with a dedicated
and experienced staff.
“Their learning programmes
cater for this age group with
many opportunities to develop
their own interests. They also
NEW SPACE: Pupils Dania Banoori, Denver Stirling, Mackenzi
Officer, Amber Moates, Julie Berry and Iris Zhang working in one
of the breakout rooms in the new year 7/8 technology hub.
use these skills to interact with
our five-year-olds every week to
build up relationships and support
our younger students,” Mrs
Trotter said.
The new hub has an open
plan area for all senior students
to congregate as well as several
break-out rooms for smaller
group learning.
It also contained a kitchen,
that was in the former staff room
and had been refurbished, for
students to learn cooking skills,
Mrs Trotter said.
The school began its redevelopment
early this year.
Since then a new junior block
and the year 7 and 8 hub have
been finished.
A new administration block,
and a library and flexible learning
block were on track to be finished
by the end of this year.
Next year the two existing
‘Canterbury’ blocks built in
the 1960s would be refurbished
and the existing hall would be
repainted on the outside, as
would several other existing
teaching rooms.
125 boxes of groceries for distribution
amongst city charities and
CGHS runners-up at
national tournament
• By Jacob Page
CHRISTCHURCH GIRLS’
High School will have to wait
12 months to be national cricket
champions after finishing
runners-up last week at Hagley
Park and Christ’s College.
The entire squad will be back
in 12 months time, eager to go
one better after falling at the final
hurdle of the Gillette Venus Cup.
CGHS went unbeaten through
pool play, including beating
Dunedin’s St Hilda’s, who
knocked them out last year, to
make the final before falling by
80 runs to Auckland’s Epsom
Girls’ Grammar in the final.
CGHS coach Hannah Beatson
said her team showed real
intensity in the field throughout,
capitalising on the opportunities
they created.
Fun and Games at Woodend Camp
Hub 5 students spent Thursday and Friday of this week at the Woodend Camp. They challenged themselves with
activities like the climbing wall, team building activities, archery, air rifles and driving go karts. Any free time was filled with
the recreational activities the camp had available like the trampolines, mini golf, chess, Gaga Dodge ball game, volleyball,
the playground the waterslide and the many sports activities available. A lot of learning took place from challenging
themselves to try their best to succeed, to sleeping in a bunkroom with others, to eating in a dining hall with 95 other
people, to showing resilience when not necessarily having had a lot of sleep.
Some of the students have reflected on their camp experience below.
Woodend Camp Reflections.
Milli: The climbing wall was challenging when I was trying to get up the No 3
path because I had to go out and up the overhang to get up to the top of the
highest point.
Matthew: I really enjoyed all the activities but especially the orienteering
because you got to run through the forest with your friends and find the
marker posts. The team building was fun because it challenged us to get
the order correct on the 8 loop activity. We managed to do the loop in 20
seconds which was equal fastest to one
other group.
Rae Anne: Team Building was fun
because everyone was collaborating and
communicating as to how we could get
over the high wall. The people who were
agile and strong were helping step people
up high so they could get on top of the wall.
Arman, Ethan, Mya and I were helping the
others to get to the top of the wall.
Hub 3’s Trip to the City
A very enjoyable trip to the City!
In integrated topic we have been looking at
earthquakes how they are caused, how to keep
safe during one and the effects of earthquakes.
We have focused our learning around
communities and change.
For our class trip we took the children to the
city to look at the effect of the earthquakes on the city and how it has changed.
The places we went to were, The Gardens, Museum and then continued on to the
Library where we saw Prince Charles and Camilla on their visit to Christchurch and
finally we went to the Margaret Mahy Playground.
A very fun filled and exciting trip we didn’t expect to see Prince Charles when we
planned our trip.
Thanks to all our parents for coming as parent help you made it all happen.
A&P Show
We had an AWESOME trip to the A&P Show. Thank you so much to
all the parents who helped out and made the trip possible. Some of
our highlights from the day were:
• Face painting
• Trailer tours: we got to sit in a trailer that was being pulled around
by a tractor and get a tour of the show
• Balloon animals
• Sports Susan: she performed for us while we ate our lunch. She
could ride a unicycle, do tricks, dance and crack jokes. We were
lucky to have Zach called up on stage to be a helper. Zach really
involved himself and made the show all the more entertaining
• Wood Chopping: it was amazing how quickly some people could
chop through blocks of wood
• Freebies: lots of lollies, hat, beanies etc
• Farm animals: we got to see sheep, rabbits, goats, bees and ducks
• Motorbikes
• Dog Trials: we were very impressed by all the tricks that the dogs
could do, herding sheep, weaving between legs, riding skateboards, jumping through hula hoops
Water Safety. Sounds boring...it wasn’t!
Ye-Young - I really enjoyed the water safety activities. The one activity that I enjoyed the most was
when we got to get under a flipped boat. I enjoyed it because it was very exhilarating. Another thing
that I really enjoyed was when Mr Brown was spraying us with a hose, it was really funny. I am really
thankful to the instructors that taught us and also for the people who fundraised for us so that we
could do water safety. I hope that when I go to high school there will be similar activities.
Hannah - I really liked the swimming. My favourite day so far has been Thursday because we got to
wear lifejackets and use the boats. I liked going under the boat. It was fun jumping into the pool and
just floating back up.
Annabel - I have really enjoyed swimming for the
whole week. My favourite part was when you had your
life jacket and you would jump in and then the guy
would push you all the way down to the bottom of the
pool and then you would float back up and swim to
the other end.
Taylor - The first day of swimming was kind of boring
because we just did lengths. The second day was better
because we got to do manus and bombs. The third and
the last days were the best because we got to use boats
and learn how to survive if the boat was turned over.
Eco-Warriors success at the National Finals
From 1 - 3 November the Oaklands Eco-Warriors team competed at the National Finals of FPSNZ
in Auckland.
It was a busy weekend and the team (Thomas White, Ben Hanson, Charlie Barnes, Keisha Byrne, Isis
McKenzie and Max McAlister) demonstrated the Oaklands CARE values very well. They were required
to set up a display board outlining their project and were interviewed by a panel of judges. On Saturday
night they shared their project with over 200 students, teachers and evaluators.
We were very excited when the judges announced that
we were Junior National champions in our category of
Community Problem Solving for the second year in a row. We
were even more excited when they said we had qualified for
the International competition in America in 2020.
The Eco-Warriors are passionate about making Oaklands
School a plastic free lunch school. This term we will be having
draws at our school assemblies for students who bring plastic
free lunches. There will be some great prizes. We will also be
presenting our ideas for rubbish & recycling systems for our
new hubs to the Board of Trustees and we are busy preparing
a display for the school gala where we will share recipes and
resources to support plastic free lunches

Tasty Bites
The perfect Xmas centerpiece
The most perfect sticky glaze
is slathered all over this juicy,
tender, baked Brown Sugar
Mustard Glazed Ham, with
crisp edges and an incredible
flavour
Brown Sugar
Mustard-Glazed Ham
Ingredients
4-5kg bone-in fully cooked ham
½ cup water
½ cup unsalted butter
1 cup brown sugar
½ cup honey
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
4 cloves garlic, smashed
Directions
Preheat the oven to 150 deg
C. and arrange a rack in the
lower third. Remove any plastic
packaging or netting from the
ham. Trim away the rind and
discard. Set the ham aside to rest
at room temperature for 1-2hr.
Line a baking tray or dish with
several sheets of aluminium foil
or baking paper if you prefer (it
will make clean-up a lot easier).
Remove the rind or skin of
the ham, ensuring you leave the
fat on. Using a sharp knife score
a 2-3cm wide diamond pattern
(don’t cut more than 5mm deep)
over the entire ham. Place the
ham in the baking tray; pour ⅓
cup of water into the base of the
pan and cover the ham with two
pieces of foil or baking paper and
bake for 30min.
Meanwhile, heat the butter
in a small pot or saucepan
over medium heat until golden
browned. Add in the brown sugar,
honey, mustard, cinnamon and
cloves, stirring to mix together
well until the brown sugar has
completely dissolved, (about
2min).
Reduce heat to low and add in
the garlic. Allow it to become
fragrant, cooking for a further
minute or two until the glaze
just begins to simmer, then
set it aside and let cool to
lukewarm (the glaze should
be the consistency of roomtemperature
honey).
After 30min baking time,
carefully remove the ham from
the oven and increase the oven
temperature to 220 deg C.
Discard the foil or parchment
paper and pour ⅓ of the glaze
all over the ham, brushing in
between the cuts to evenly
cover. Return to the oven and
bake uncovered for 15min.
Remove from the oven,
brush with another third of
the glaze and some of the pan
juices, and repeat again after
15min more minutes of baking
until a dark golden-brown
crust has formed, (about
30min total). For added depth
of flavour, mix some of the
ham pan juices together with
the glaze in the pot which will
help keep it runny enough
for brushing. If your crust is
still pink after there suggested
baking time, turn on your
broiler (or oven grill), and
allow it to broil for 2-5min,
while keeping an eye on it so it
doesn’t burn from the sugar.
Let the ham rest 10-20min
before slicing.
NOTES
If your glaze has been over
simmered and begins to
thicken between each baste,
add some of the pan juices to
it and heat it up over low heat
until it warms through and is the
consistency of warmed honey.
How to remove ham rind
1
1. Cut a line through the skin
all around the shank end.
2
2. Insert a sharp knife between
the rind and fat and run it
along to detach the rind.
3
3. Using your fingers, gently
separate the rind from the
fat, insterting your hand
deeper into the ham to keep
detaching it.
4
4. Peel off and discard the rind.
