NOVEMBER – This is the month to
set our clocks back, honor our veterans,
and count our blessings. My favorite
memory of Thanksgiving is having
each guest around our dinner table
tell what they are most grateful for,
before carving the turkey dinner. November’s
flower is the chrysanthemum which symbolizes
optimism and cheerfulness. What’s not to like
about spending the winter in sunny and warm Florida!
We are indeed thankful that the hurricane season is
ending.
Set your clocks back on November 4 TH as it is the
end of Daylight Savings Time. This is the first year
that Daylight Savings Time was extended by a month
to conserve energy.
November 11 TH is Veteran’s Day, dedicated to
honor all men and women, both living and deceased,
who have served in the nation's armed forces. In
1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November
11th as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of
World War I, which took place at the 11th hour, of the
11th day, of the 11th month. Congress changed the
name to Veteran's Day in 1954. Veteran's Day is always
celebrated on November 11th, regardless of the
day of the week on which it falls.
November 22 ND is Thanksgiving Day in the US. If
you don’t have other plans for dinner, reserve a spot
for dinner at the Clubhouse in the afternoon. In
1621, the original band of Pilgrims who sailed into Plymouth,
MA on the Mayflower celebrated a successful
harvest festival with the Patuxet and Abnaki Native
American Indians who had taught them to fish and
plant corn to survive the harsh winter. The Thanksgiving
holiday was first proclaimed by the governing council
of Charlestown, MA in 1676 to be celebrated on
June 29 TH , “to express thanks for the good fortune that
had seen their community securely established.” In
1876, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed to “set apart the
last Thursday in November next as a day which I desire
to be observed by all my fellow-citizens, wherever they

may be then, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to
Almighty God, the beneficent Creator and Ruler of the
universe.”
The season is starting again at Lake Fairways. Take
advantage of the many things to do here: golf, tennis,
shuffleboard, bocci, bowling, cards, concerts, karaoke,
the Sandtrap. Come to Saturday coffee at 8:00 A.M. at
the Clubhouse to reconnect with friends and find out
about all that’s going on.

Over the past year, your Home
Owner’s Board of Directors met every month with ELS
Management to bring improvements to our community,
including: new carpet in the clubhouse and Sandtrap,
resurfaced tennis courts and shuffleboard courts,
trimmed palm trees around the community, benches
outside the clubhouse, repaired golf cart paths, new
cabana cover by pool, landscaping around the pool,
new treadmill and exercise bike, additional maintenance
personnel, and plans to recarpet the bocci courts
and resurface some roads. We like working with Ed
Southard, the new General Manager of our community,
and his staff.
It’s time again to renew your membership in the Home
Owners’ Association of Lake Fairways. Membership
fees are just $20 a year. We have increased our fees
for the first time in over 20 years, primarily to help
fund projects to keep water in our lakes and to handle
legal issues about hurricane shelter liability.
Membership allows you to vote for the Board of Directors.
Next year, you must be a member of the Home
Owners’ Association to receive the Informer and the
Lake Fairways Directory. To become a member return
your membership form along with a check made out to
HOALF to the box in the copy room at the clubhouse.

Proclamation
Thanksgiving is a national holiday
in the United States and is celebrated
on the fourth Thursday in
November.
Thanksgiving, 1864, was proclaimed by President
Abraham Lincoln in these words:
"It has pleased Almighty God to prolong our national
life another year...to favor as well our citizens in their
homes as our soldiers in their camps, and our sailors
on the rivers and seas, with unusual health.
"He has largely augmented our free population by
emancipation and by immigration, while He has opened
to us new sources of wealth, and has crowned the labor
of our working men in every department of industry
with abundant rewards.
"Moreover, He has been pleased to animate and
inspire our minds and hearts with fortitude, courage

Our potluck dinner was a great success
to start out the new season; lots of
great food and friendship! It was nice to see so many
new and not so new faces. I hope you all had a great
time.
November 8 TH at 7:00 P.M. will be the next meeting.
Doors open at 6:30 P.M. The Sheriffs Department will
provide an interesting and informative presentation on
identity theft. Hope to see you then.
Our Bake Sale at the Craft Show will be from 9 to
11 A.M. on November 10 TH . Please donate any
homemade baked goods for our sale: pies, breads,
cookies, and brownies are always welcome.
Keep the date of December 13 TH open. That’s our

The October meeting began with the now popular social
hour. New guests and members introduced themselves
and received a warm welcome.
Before dinner, served by “Sub and Pub”, the following
drawings were held:

Leona Jennings, Dee Arkin, Gene Herman, and
Jean Kibler.

Our speaker for the evening was the well-known columnist
for the News-Press, Sam Cook. He relived his
adventurous and colorful life, with detailed descriptions
that left us amused and laughing.
Our November 13 TH meeting will feature the everpopular
“Bayshore Cloggers.” Their director, Debbie
Truitt, promises a larger group, dressed in new black
and silver costumes, ready to entertain us. Our
monthly raffle will be a $60.00 gift card to Mel’s Diner
on Pine Island Road.

Time Running Out for IRA Transfers to Charities
Last year, the Pension Protection Act of 2006 drew a lot of attention for its efforts to strengthen the private pension system.
But this legislation contained a number of other provisions - one of which, in particular, may be of great interest to
you if you are over 70-1/2 and you'd like to make a sizable contribution to a charity.
Specifically, the Pension Protection Act allows you to transfer money from your traditional or Roth IRA to a charitable
organization. You can donate up to $100,000 per year, and the IRA distribution will be tax-free. (If you are married, and
your spouse also has an IRA, the two of you can contribute up to $200,000.) However, if you're interested in making
this move, you'd better act fast, because the ability to make these transfers expires at the end of 2007.
Apart from providing you with a tax-advantaged way to make sizable charitable contributions, the IRA provision of the
new pension laws gives you some added flexibility in another area: required minimum distributions (RMDs). As you may
know, once you turn 70-1/2, you have to start taking distributions from your traditional IRA - whether you need the
money or not. And these distributions will be taxable. (The required minimum distribution rule does not apply to Roth
IRAs.) But the provision allowing you to transfer IRA distributions to charities can help you meet the RMD requirement.
For example, if you are required to withdraw 5 percent from your IRA for 2007, you can send the entire amount to a
charity to satisfy the RMD requirement - and your distribution will be tax-free.
The IRA-to-charity provision may also benefit you if you aren't planning to itemize deductions on your tax returns. That's
because your IRA distribution will eliminate the need to claim a charitable deduction. On the other hand, if you are close
to "maxing out" on your income tax deductions because you are bumping up against the rule limiting deductions to 50
percent of your adjusted gross income, you might find that the IRA transfer rule can help you give more to charities
than you would otherwise be able to make.
Review Retirement Income Before Taking Action
Clearly, the IRA-to-charity transfer can benefit you as far as making tax-advantaged contributions to support the charitable
organizations of your choice. But before you decide to send your IRA distributions to a charity, make absolutely sure
you won't need the money to help support your retirement lifestyle. Your financial advisor can help you review your income
needs and the various sources of income you can count on.
You'll also need to consult with your tax advisor before you choose to send your IRA distributions to a charity. This
move may well benefit your tax situation, but keep in mind that everyone's situation is different - so get the professional
guidance you need before making a move.
Once you've met with your financial and tax advisors and you've determined that a charitable IRA rollover is appropriate
for you, don't wait too long to act. No one can predict future legislation, but, as of now, the clock is ticking on your ability
to make this type of transfer. So, if this action sounds like something that would interest you, contact the charity you
wish to support for the paperwork you'll need - and get the ball rolling.

FRIENDS IN SERVICE HERE (Lake Fairways F.I.S.H.)

First, on behalf of all the members of Lake Fairways F.I.S.H., I extend sincere greetings and good wishes
to you all for the celebration of American Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 22 ND . Although originally, and still, a
celebration of God’s goodness seen in a bountiful harvest, we have much more for which to be thankful. Each of us
should spend some time considering the bigger picture and the privileges and blessings it contains.
As “the season” approaches, many businesses and service industries experience an increased customer demand for their
products and services. People who live year round in the Fort Myers area already are commenting on the increased
traffic flow, restaurant crowding, longer waits in the checkout lanes at supermarkets, etc. Even doctor’s offices and
churches become more crowded.
What does all this mean for Lake Fairways F.I.S.H. and all of the Lake Fairways community? For one thing, if so many
people look forward to coming to Lake Fairways and Fort Myers, we must have a great place to live, work and play! In
addition each of us needs to be more patient, more courteous, and to be more dedicated to maintaining our own safety
and that of our seasonal residents. Speaking personally, it concerns me greatly when I see people on golf cars driving in
a manner that seemingly says the rules of the road are there to be ignored. Respecting stop signs, making proper turn
signals, etc. seem to become more and more rare. Car and truck drivers as well do not respect stop signs and often fail
to properly signal turns.
Some of these careless violations may be minimized if we plan our travel more carefully. Local travel in the “off season”
that takes 20 minutes may take 45 “in season”. We should plan our local travel for errands and business during times
when traffic hopefully will be lighter and the crowds smaller. Plan ahead, relax, drive safely and arrive alive. I am reminded
of a small business card a funeral director friend gave to me. It read, “Please drive safely. We will wait!”
Although the population of Lake Fairways drops significantly when many of our friends return to their northern homes
for the summer season, Lake Fairways F.I.S.H. has a steady request for service during that “off season”. With the return
of our community’s seasonal residents everything from the clubhouse, the golf course, the swimming pool, the Sand
Trap and Lake Fairways F.I.S.H. become much busier.
Activities within Lake Fairways usually can be reached with relative ease by most of us. We have cars, golf cars, bicycles
and for the health minded among us “shanks express” (walking).
Travel outside our community can be more of a challenge for those who do not or cannot drive a car. Medical appointments,
grocery shopping, hair appointments etc. are all important and necessary. Lake Fairways F.I.S.H. is pleased to
help members of our community by providing transportation to these appointments.
Can we include you among those generous volunteer members of our community who form Lake Fairways F.I.S.H.? If
you can help for perhaps three hours per month, usually one morning or afternoon, please contact any of the following

Seems like every month there is sad news. Ruby Landreville
passed away. We received a lovely email from
Don thanking us for our cards and concern. Our condolences
to Maddie Greenburg on the loss of her sister.
Remember to bring items of special attention to Jean
Carter.
The HCP tourney has started and the winner will be
announced at our December luncheon. The two best
scores out of three will be used to find the winner.
As our numbers increase, remember to be ready on the
tee and mark the score on the next hole to move
things along! As we pick up new members try to be a
"big sister" to those who need it!
We are still in need of a "historian" to keep our
"memory book" up to date. Maybe two can join their
efforts? It does seem a shame if it has to come to a
halt !

GOLDEN BOYS GOLF LEAGUE

Tuesday, October 2 ND . We have a small crowd for this
early in the season.
The schedule for the month of November is as follows:

Come join us every Tuesday morning. Starting time is
posted at the Pro Shop.

A golfer, who had never kicked his ball to a better lie
and who reported his scores accurately, went to
heaven when he died. Heaven turned out to be an
endless vista of perfectly conditioned championship
golf courses. Naturally, he was out on the course
swinging away the first day.
Waiting to play a long dogleg around a lake, he
watched another player hit a ball into the water trying
to go the short way to the hole.
“Imagine trying to drive 270 yards over that lake. Who
does he think he is, Moses?” he said to a companion.
“He is Moses,” said the other player. “The trouble is,
he thinks he’s Tiger Woods.”

some time on vacation and with family.
This is just a reminder. The Aqua Babes class is on
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30
to 9:30 A.M. The same rules apply – we will be at the
pool if the temperature is 62 degrees on Channel 2.

GEORGE SCHUDEL IN BLIND VETERANS
GOLF TOURNAMENT
George Schudel played in the Iowa Blind Veterans Association
(BVA) Tee tournament in September. ELS
and various Lake Fairways groups provided money for
his airfare. This is from his journal.
When I landed in Moline IL., we had to wait for three
blind (?) guys driving in from another city in IL. The
next morning, after breakfast, I grabbed my clubs, got
a green I.D. card and boarded the green bus, which
unknown to me was for the good golfers (with some
sight). It was about 50 degrees, sunny and very
windy.
We rode to Blue Top Golf Club, Hotel & Casino. The
Blue Top golf course was a large farm two years ago;
the name comes from the blue roofs on the buildings.
It will become the Iowa PGA golf stop, and will be a
challenging course, even for Tiger Woods. The course
was long, long, long, and full of bunkers, valleys,
creeks, grass (weeds), doglegs right and left. One hole
was 630 yards and most were just a little shorter.
I was assigned to Howard Huff, a buddy/caddy, who is
88 years old. Between hitting balls on the driving
range, practice putting, getting carts for 11 foursomes,
and waiting to tee off, there was lots of standing
around. On the first day, we all started from the first
tee; as ours was the last foursome to tee off, we stood
around a lot.
An NBC reporter and cameraman interviewed me,
since the Florida BVA President in our foursome hid.
The cameraman followed me, wanting to get a couple
of good shots of me hitting the ball. The missing word
was good. I failed to get a decent hit while he was
there. I finally started hitting the ball when they left. I
did make a comment to the NBC reporter that I was a
Republican. They tell me I was on the 6 PM and 10 PM
news for about 15 seconds.
We only managed five holes before having a great box
lunch. After lunch, my roommate Rick and I bailed out
of the horseshoe tournament choosing instead to clean
up, shave, and rest our old legs before going to the
lounge for supper and cocktails. At the end of the first

day, I was exhausted!
Up at 6:00 am for a breakfast of eggs, sausages, taters,
toast, juice and coffee. Temp in low forties and
windy again, so I took a sweater and jacket on the bus
for Blue Top at 7:30 am. Howard met me with my
clubs on the cart and we were ready to roll. We played
the back nine, teeing off first. I hit four shots before I
got near the green. We played 8 holes and lost about
4 balls (3 on one hole!). Howard’s eyesight was not a
whole lot better than mine. On 7 of the 8 holes, I hit a
good drive for me, between 110 - 140 yards with my
driving iron. As I had no idea how long the course
would be, I did not bring any woods. Paul and the others
were hitting 200 plus yards. We did not keep
score. My putting was not bad. I was pretty close
most of the time, despite Howard not lining me up too
good.
After another box lunch, we went to the bowling alley.
Rick and I skipped bowling. The bowling balls had
a handle you pulled out and snapped back in when you
released the ball. We returned to our room for some
R&R and enjoyed a supper of pork steak, taters, and
green beans at a local Moose lodge.
That evening we went to the casino; they gave us two
hundred in play money. There were roulette and
blackjack tables. A volunteer named Debbie was our
helper, calling our cards as they were dealt to us. Just
like a woman, she took me to the casino store to help
me spend my winnings!
On the third day, after breakfast we boarded the bus
for Fox Run, a nine-hold golf course where the tournament
was played. As it was warmer, I took just a
jacket and golf sandals. I drew a new foursome. The
other three had some sight. In 15 holes, I duffed only
one tee shot. 14 good shots and some good second
and third shots.
Since old Howard and I were getting bushed, we quit
at the 15 th hole and headed back to the pro shop. We
left the clubs at the bus and headed for cocktails and a
rest. For an hour and a half, I listened to Howard tell
us how he bailed out of a B-17 over Germany in April

1944. He was captured by the Germans and sent to
Stalag 17 for one year and 29 days. He said the movie
was pretty accurate and the guy who put his sox in the
soup was the writer of the play and movie. We were
among some real heroes up there.
That evening, we ate a very good chicken dinner at the
banquet. Paul Kominski, our Florida BVA president,
shot an 85 and tied for first, but lost in a shoot off. Obviously,
the vets with some vision left were the low
scorers. 116 BVA men and women from 25 states received
an award for attending the Tournament.
Other than my plane flights, it was a wonderful experience.
God willing, I hope to return next year and play
a lot better. Thank you Lake Fairways & ELS.

A LOCAL CELEBRITY

of loyal friends and supporters
from Lake Fairways
traveled to Newport,
Rhode Island to
participate in an auspicious
event honoring our
friend and tennis pro,
Jack Dunmead. Jack was
inducted into the New
England Tennis Hall of
Fame with high honors
and many kudos from
friends, relatives, former
students, tennis partners
and players.
Jack, along with five other contemporaries, was inducted
in an impressive ceremony following a reception
and a sumptuous dinner at the Horseshoe Piazza in the
beautiful facility, The International Tennis Hall of Fame.
The following day, friends and families enjoyed tours of
famous Newport and then on to a gala party in Easton,
MA, at the lovely home of Jack and Betty’s daughter
and husband, Laurie and Joe Krowski. Everyone had a
marvelous time, enjoying an abundance of food,
drinks, music, karaoke and general camaraderie.

supposedly retired, you can find him most days, after a
round of golf, busy at Mid Cape Tennis Club directing
the activities there.
Jack, wherever you go and whatever you do, may sunshine
follow you and may you always go confidently in
the direction of your dreams.

TIME TO PLANT A HERB
GARDEN
By Kaye Cude, Master Gardener
It is not true that you cannot
plant herbs in Florida. Some tips include knowing
where to plant, how to condition the soil, how to plant
herbs, how to plant a garden box, and types of herbs.
Tip 1: Location
� Plant where you will walk by it at least once a day.
This way you’ll remember to water it.
� For summer, plant where it gets shade in the
morning and sun in the afternoon. For winter,
plant where it gets sun in the morning and shade
in the afternoon.
� Plant taller plants like papaya to give the herbs
shade.
Tip 2: Condition the soil
Florida has sandy soil. Create good soil, by following
these steps.
1. Newspaper: lay 8 sheets of wet newspaper to prevent
weeds.
2. Mulch: cover with lots of mulch. (don’t use cypress)
3. Lime: use 2 TSP per 100 sq ft. of hydrated nursery
horticultural lime.
4. Wetting agent: sprinkle a ribbon of dishwashing
detergent every 2 feet.
5. Manure: condition the soil with manure (buy the
cheapest at Wal-Mart’s). It will feed the earthworms.
6. Fertilizer: sprinkle enough 10-10-10 or 6-6-6 fertilizer
to see it on top. It feeds the plants.
7. Soil: cover with 1” of dirt (not potting soil).
8. Newspaper: put on 3 layers of newspaper.
9. Mulch: add to top.
10. Water: have a water system nearby.

11. Plants: buy herbs that are in season. Those provided
by Kitchen Garden are good, because they
sell when the herbs are ready to grow.
12. Furrow with Potting Soil: dig a furrow and fill with
potting soil.
Tip 3: Planting the herbs
� Give them a deep haircut. Less foliage
promotes a better root system to start.
� Pull out of pot, then cut off and discard the
bottom 1/3 of root system.
� Split the plants into 2-3 stems per planting.
� If planting in a planter, the herbs will fill 3 or
more planters.
Tip 4: How to plant a garden box
� Plug up the bottom of the box
� Drill holes 1/3 of way from bottom with a soldering
iron
� Fill bottom 1/2 with broken up Styrofoam from
discarded appliance cartons (do not use biodegradable
starch packing peanuts)
� Fill rest of container with mixture of ¾ good
potting soil and ¼ cheap potting soil mixed with
a little mulch
� Pack down the dirt
� Create a hole and plant the herbs, trimmed and
rooted, up to the nodule just below the bottom
leaves.
� Give lots of water.
� Put a tiny bit of fertilizer and lime now, and fertilize
again in 3 weeks
Tip 5: Types of herbs
� Rosemary – trim roots, not top, plant on side, as
it gets taller
� Savory – trim roots, give a haircut, split apart –
plant on the side of container as it will lean over
� Chamomile – trim roots, give haircut, break apart
into many plants
� Oregano – cut roots, split apart, drape over the
side
� Arugula – cut roots, split apart – this is an annual
only
� Lemon basil – give haircut, trim roots, break
apart
� Salad burnette – leaves taste like cucumbers
� Pigeon Peas – grow tall and put nitrogen back in
the soil – plant in April
� Mints – put in their own pots
� Chives – put in their own pots

FEATURED TREE

Scrambled Egg Acacia Tree
Under most circumstances the Scrambled Egg Acacia Tree (Senna surattensis) is a dependable and impressive small
flowering tree. It is commonly planted as a street and landscape tree in south Florida and the Bahamas. Its flowering
days are prolonged and beautiful, flowering from January through December, with best shows in spring and fall. Newly
planted trees must be kept well watered to become established and apparently to flower adequately. After establishment
reduce irrigation.
In alternate years, prune once after a major flowering episode to keep a tight attractive canopy. You may prune more
often to remove scant leaves and dry, hanging, blackened pods. The trunk and branches are a silvergray color. The
crown is naturally rounded and airy, but pruning and wind damage will thicken and shorten the canopy of many trees.
Easily toppled by wind, the tree should probably be staked for up to three years after planting or until it becomes properly
established.
It is generally not a long-lived tree, but properly tended it can live for more than 10 years. This means keeping it properly
standing and maintaining it free of scales and the pink hibiscus mealybug. It attracts egg-laying cloudless sulfur
butterflies. The caterpillars feed on the leaves and flowers of the tree. However, caterpillar feeding does little to detract
from the beauty of its magnificent displays. Maintain a fertilizer schedule for best appearance.

A Letter of Thanks to all
Volunteers of FISH

I have macular degeneration that would eventually
lead to me being blind. In 2005, I was contacted by
Dr. Wing of The Retina Center of Florida. He asked me
if I would be willing to participate in a clinical trial that
involved getting monthly injections directly into my
eye.
I was delighted that I was being given this chance, but
my only challenge was I couldn’t drive to my monthly
appointments. That is when FISH came to my rescue,
and for the past 2½ years have faithfully taken me to
The Retina Center every month for my appointment.
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this service.
Without their help, I could not have continued to get
my treatment. This new treatment has now given me
limited vision which is something I would not have had
today.
I want to end this letter with a big “Thank You!” to all
the delightful volunteers who give their time and energy
to this organization. Without them, this service
would not be as successful. I truly am a very grateful
woman.

Today at the drugstore, the clerk was a gent.
From my purchase this chap took off ten percent.
I asked for the cause of a lesser amount;
And he answered, "Because of the Seniors’
Discount."
I went to McDonald's for a burger and fries;
And there, once again, got quite a surprise.
The clerk poured some coffee which he handed to me.
He said, "For you Seniors, the coffee is free."
Understand — I'm not old — I'm merely mature;
But some things are changing, temporarily, I'm sure.
The newspaper print gets smaller each day,
And people speak softer— can't hear what they say.
My teeth are my own (I have the receipt),
and my glasses identify people I meet.
Oh, I've slowed down a bit... not a lot, I am sure.
You see, I'm not old... I'm only mature.
The gold in my hair has been bleached by the sun.
You should see all the damage that chlorine has done.
Washing my hair has turned it all white,
But don't call it gray... saying "blond" is just right.
My car is all paid for... not a nickel is owed.
Yet a kid yells, "Old duffer... get off of the road!"
My car has no scratches... not even a dent.
Still I get all that guff from a punk who's "Hell bent."
My friends all get older... much faster than me.
They seem much more wrinkled, from what I can see.
I've got "character lines," not wrinkles... for sure,
But don't call me old... just call me mature.
The steps in the houses they're building today
Are so high that they take... your breath all away;
And the streets are much steeper than ten years ago.
That should explain why my walking is slow.
But I'm keeping up on what's hip and what's new,
And I think I can still dance a mean boogaloo.
I'm still in the running... in this I'm secure,
I'm not really old... I'm only mature.

MULLIGAN’S WILD:
Golf Game of the Year
Press Release
Mulligan’s Wild golf game was started about two years
ago. Marv and Jennifer Shacket, from Pine Lakes,
were playing another board game, and decided, as a
joke to come up with a golf game. One thing led to
another and two years and thousands of dollars later,
Mulligan’s Wild was born.
A lot of hard work and time was put into the creation
of Mulligan’s Wild. The name was selected from playing
golf at Pine Lakes, where everyone seemed to want
a mulligan. The prototype game was played by a lot of
couples, in both Florida and New York. Many changes
were made along the way, with greatly appreciated
input from everyone.
Marv and Jennifer went to many companies in the Fort
Myers and New York areas, but found it too costly to
manufacture in this country. Despite their belief of
“Made in U.S.A.”, they had no choice but to send the
game to China to be manufactured. They returned
early from New York this season in order to be in Florida
when the shipment arrived at Port Everglades.
They give a lot of credit for the support of Carroll and
Donna Hall from Lake Fairways, who are partners in
this venture. Mulligan’s Wild will make is debut at
Pine Lakes Craft Fair on November 2nd and Lake
Fairways Holiday Arts & Craft Show on November
10 th , and will also be sold in retail outlets in the
U.S. and Canada. You can also contact them by e-mail

Turkeys will thaw in the morning, then warm in the
oven to an afternoon high near 190F. The kitchen will
turn hot and humid, and if you bother the cook, be
ready for a severe squall or cold shoulder.
During the late afternoon and evening, the cold front of
a knife will slice through the turkey, causing an accumulation
of one to two inches on plates. Mashed potatoes
will drift across one side while cranberry sauce
creates slippery spots on the other. Please pass the
gravy.
A weight watch and indigestion warning have been
issued for the entire area, with increased stuffiness
around the beltway. During the evening, the turkey will
diminish and taper off to leftovers, dropping to a low of
34F in the refrigerator.
Looking ahead to Friday and Saturday, high pressure to
eat sandwiches will be established. Flurries of leftovers
can be expected both days with a 50 percent chance of
scattered soup late in the day. We expect a warming
trend where soup develops. By early next week, eating
pressure will be low as the only wish left will be the
bone.

At Plymouth Rock the pilgrims land.
The first winter tough, over half had died.
New found friends of the Indians made,
the Wampanoag’s generosity provided aid.
Seeds were sown, harvest reaped by hand,
the tribe teaching ways to work the land.
Fish to richen earth, for the corn to grow,
cooperation proof for a great land to show.
Invite of the tribe to show them care,
who came with their own food to share.
Living together that first experiment,
shows it possible, gave encouragement.
Thanksgiving for the harvest filled,
thankfulness to God who multiplies.
Their gratitude for having survived,
thanks for friends and God’s supplies.
Holiday tradition now in America,
turkey, dressings, and all the trimmings.
Family, friends, employment all,
we give our thanks to God for life.

The Cart Parade
will be on Monday, December
10 TH and Tuesday,

with the same format as
last year. Each Court Captain
should notify Patia Ashley at 567-1571 where they
would like the cart parade to stop and sing. We will
reverse last year’s route. The schedule of events is as

LIFE WASN’T MEANT TO BE EASY!

No matter how successful we are, we all face challenges,
struggles, and times when things don’t go our
way. There is a divine purpose for every challenge
that comes into our lives. Our job is to trust in a Big
Picture view of our calamities.
Bumblebees were taken along on
a space mission for a study on
the effects of weightlessness.
The bees floated around with
great ease. They didn’t have to
use their wings; they didn’t have
to spend any energy at all, they
just floated without work, without
struggle or adversity. The experiment was
summed up with these words: “They enjoyed the ride,
but they didn’t survive.” Bees were never meant to go
through life without using their wings, not having any
resistance. In the same way, you and I were never
meant to float through life on flowery beds of ease.
As humans we think we want and would enjoy just
floating through life, but if you spend a little time thinking
back on your life, I wouldn’t be surprised if you
could name a gem, a turning point in a stage of your
life when you would not have changed direction or accepted
a new vision for your life IF you have not been
coming from a point of adversity. Was it really a “point
of adversity” or was it your guardian angels saying,
“It’s OK – you just need to be going in this direction,
just wait, you’ll see.”
