Glenn Carlson was born and raised in central Canada. He 

is educated in architecture, engineering, and art. After 

a career as an architect on Canada’s west coast, Glenn 

returned to his childhood ambition of being an artist.

Using his artist name ‘Didymus Bernadotte’, Bernadotte became 

absorbed in the study of aesthetics – (the philosophy of art and 

beauty). He found proportion perfected in ancient architecture, 

the art of great masters and in the study of chaos - He's especially 

inspired by art that contains use of 'the golden mean' or 'the golden 

rectangle', two philosophy-defined relationships. 

Didymus has developed his own use of proportion, colour, 

perspective, harmony, rhythm, and balance through this study. 

His work is exceedingly simple, yet exquisitely beautiful showing the 

benign and mathematical universe. 

Didymus calls his work "ORTHOPHIGRAPHIC", which is 

defined as the discipline of drawing using phi, the golden mean, or 

Fibonacci’s numbers, which are found in the makeup of the cosmos 

and many living things. 

Many of his paintings are influenced by memories of his youth 

spent riding horseback under huge blue skies on the flat white 

winter landscape of the Canadian prairies. Other paintings reflect 

his time spent as a mariner on the ocean around Vancouver Island, 

B.C. as seen in his reflected skies, water, and landscapes. Some

paintings are abstracted, showing only the bare bones of proportion 

and eliminating detail. His paintings give light to his Scandinavian 

heritage as well as his interest in history, architecture, and spirituality. 

In his 90s, Glenn Carlson lives in Ucluelet where he paints, sculpts, 

and continues his study of the golden mean. Glenn believes in a 

‘Universal Mind’ that controls all things and that eventually “Truth, 

goodness, and beauty will prevail.”

Annie Guglia 

The 2020 Summer Olympic Games 

in Tokyo mark a milestone for 

board sports with the inclusion 

of skateboarding and surfing disciplines 

to the games. Not only does this provide 

opportunities for Canadian skaters 

and surfers to get support, training, 

and facilities, but it also legitimizes the 

sports in the eyes of the general public. 

Skateboarding and surfing have lived 

happily under the radar for years, but 

have been used mercilessly in corporate 

advertising with the lion’s share of 

profits going to large corporations while 

athletes earn a fraction of that of athletes 

competing in more traditional sports. 

Their inclusion into the Olympics gives 

young athletes more opportunities to 

pursue and improve at their passions while 

also getting the privilege to represent their 

homeland in front of the entire world. In 

every Ukeedaze issue leading up to the 

games we will feature an athlete who is 

a favourite to represent Canada in either 

skateboarding or surfing. This issue’s 

athlete is Annie Guglia.

Ukeedaze: You've become a role model for many young women in 

skateboarding. How have you embraced that role and what does it 

mean to you? 

Annie: I think it’s really important to share your passion when 

you have one. Skateboarding has been so important in my life 

and I’m so thankful for everything that it brought me and all the 

people I’ve met. Also, I want to make everyone feel welcome in the 

skateboarding world. I often hear girls and womxn say that it’s too 

intimidating and that’s why I started offering spaces for them (all 

ages and all abilities) to come try skateboarding or shred together in 

Montreal. It’s a success every month! 

Ukeedaze: Some of the young girls getting exposure are taking it 

to the next level. Which young ladies are getting your attention in 

skateboarding right now? 

Annie: So many girls are killing it right now! My favorites right now 

are Rayssa Leal, Poe Pinson and Lore Bruggeman. 

Ukeedaze: You have a master's degree. What was your major and 

have you made any plans in the future after pro skating? 

Annie: I did my master's in business strategy at HEC Montreal 

and studied the apparent contradiction in discourse between the 

skateboarding subculture and management for business strategists 

in North America. I don’t really have plans for after 2020 for now as 

I’m focused on my athlete's career right now. We’ll see! 

Ukeedaze: For those who don't know who are the Skirtboarders? 

Annie: Skirtboarders was a group of women who skated in Montreal 

between 2002 and 2010. We made a full-length skate video in 2006 

called Skirtboarders: The Movie. We travelled to Mexico and Sweden 

together to promote women in skateboarding. We’re all still friends 

but most of the girls kind of quit skating to start families or do other 

stuff. I was the youngest so it’s easier for me to still be skating! 

Ukeedaze: You're currently a favourite to represent Canada in 

the 2020 games in Tokyo, Japan. What are your thoughts on 

skateboarding being added to the Olympics and are you doing 

anything differently in preparation for the event? 

Annie: I think it’s rad because it’s opening minds that skateboarding 

is not just for teenage boys. Women from various countries are 

getting more opportunities and we’re seeing a huge growth in 

participation, which I think is good!

SOUND CHECK 

The Royal Youths 

The Royal Youths originally formed 

back in 2015 when Tofino based 

drummer Liam Mackenzie put an 

ad out searching for like-minded musicians 

during his two years living down in Victoria, 

BC. Guitarist Rhett Reilkoff (of Defy 

False Authority) answered the ad, which 

was quickly followed up by a jam and so 

began the group's humble beginnings 

of this project. Rhett brought in bassist 

Karl Williaume (formerly of Stabilo) 

after a couple of trial jams with different 

musicians. Luckily Liam's old band mate, 

friend, and saxophonist extraordinaire 

Andrew Greenwood (aka “The Lone 

Ranger of Downtown Mischief, Galactic 

Mantis, and The Novamatics) was on-board 

from the get go. After trying out a few front 

men and women, the group came across 

vocalist Caleb Hart (formerly of Tasman 

Jude) at a monthly reggae open mic jam at 

The Reef in Victoria. 

"Caleb got on the mic while we were up 

there playing and the rest is history". 

Numbers were exchanged and the missing 

link of frontman was officially filled that 

night. Caleb came up with the band's name 

during their first rehearsal effortlessly after 

they had been fumbling for months to 

think of one. During their four years as 

a “part-time band”, they’ve managed to 

record an EP titled “Origination”, have 

toured western Canada numerous times, 

and have played multiple festivals including 

the Tall Tree music festival, Rifflandia, 

Victoria Ska & Reggae festival and the Song 

& Surf music festival to name a few here 

on Vancouver Island. They have shared the 

stage and opened for reggae legends such 

as Damian "Jr Gong" Marley, Culture, and 

Morgan Heritage.

now as frontman of The Royal Youths, 

Caleb Hart has established himself as one 

of Canada’s premier reggae voices - rootsreggae 

smooth to dancehall grimy in the 

blink of an eye and always armed with 

a message of peace, love and hope.” –

Caleb demonstrated this in his recent solo 

album release of "11" produced by Track 

7 out of Trinidad & Tobago (Caleb Hart's 

original home). 

The Royal Youths wrapped up their year by 

releasing a new single titled “Crazy People” 

followed by a mini BC tour in November. 

The Royal Youths will be back performing 

and hitting the festival circuit when Caleb 

gets home from Tobago in the spring. 

Caleb Hart and The Royal Youths hope to 

continue making quality music together and 

keep people dancing wherever they go. If

The west coast of Vancouver island 

is breath taking. Using a drone has 

allowed us to explore new regions, and 

get new perspectives on some our favourite 

spots. 

Here is a short video of the best drone 

footage we were able to capture this Fall in 

and around the Tofino - Ucluelet region. 

In October, a film crew from the United 

States came to the Ucluelet/Tofino region 

to shoot promotional material for electric 

vehicle start-up Rivian. They brought their 

highly anticipated all electric truck the 

Rivian R1T with them, and we were able 

to get some behind the scenes footage of 

their pre-production truck driving around 

the streets of Ucluelet. The Rivian R1T and 

SUV version the R1S are scheduled to begin 

deliveries in late 2020. Starting retail price 

for the R1T is $70,000 USD.
