from the
Tonight we extend a very warm Paycare Ground welcome to the
players, management, officials and supporters of Wolverhampton
Casuals. “Cassies” are unbeaten in the league this season and are
among the promotion favourites. In my opinion Cassies are the best
footballing team in the Division and we know we have a very tough
task tonight. Win, lose or draw their players and officials will be most
welcome to join us for post-match hospitality.
For the second time in a week we again make history. Following last
Tuesdayʼs record breaking crowd against Walsall FC tonight is our
first home league game under lights at The Paycare Ground and will
be the first ever league game under floodlights played anywhere in
Bentley.
I was as proud as punch last Tuesday as before an immense crowd of
451 we fought out a 2-2 draw against a strong Walsall team to mark
the official opening of our floodlights. I must say everyone at Walsall
FC was a delight to deal with in organising the game and also on the
night before during and after the game. First Team manager Darrell
Clarke was present and he and his coaching team were at the ground
at about 5.00pm and spent time talking to us, to supporters, having
photographs taken and signing autographs. Secretary Dan Mole and
media officer Paul Joannou were also superb.
Not only did the players and management team handle
3
themselves superbly and do the club proud but on the night the
Committee and Directors and volunteers demonstrated that they
could also handle the big occasion. Everyone was immense on the
night but I must pay special mention to Lynne Hale, Garry Hale and
Gil Preece who were at the Ground from mid-morning to late at night
all putting in a 12 hour shift. As Chairman I am truly blessed to have
such a wonderful group of volunteers working on behalf of the club.
Following the game we have received fabulous feedback from Walsall
FC Officials, VIPs on the night and from Darlaston and particularly
Walsall fans who visited the ground for the first time. People were
particularly complimentary about the playing surface, the matchday
programme, our facilities and drinks & food quality & prices. Our
website has had more than 3000 views since the game and Walsall
fans forums have been very positive about the club and their
experience on the evening. We hope to see some of them at future
home games.
Enjoy tonightʼs game and thank you all for your magnificent support
and being with us on this history making occasion

View from the Dugout
Good evening and welcome back to the
Paycare Ground, I hope everyone enjoyed
last Tuesday evening’s game against
Walsall F.C. what a great night. My staff,
players and I really enjoyed the evening
making it even more special sharing it
with you the club’s supporters most of
which have stood by the club in difficult
times.
What a fantastic attendance, breaking the
club’s previous record for a local derby
against Wednesfield a few years ago over
the Christmas period. 451 was the joint
fourth highest crowd of the evening in
national non-league football WoW!
The game served its purpose on more
than one front, obviously to celebrate the
official switching on of the club’s new floodlights by the club’s main sponsor
Paycare. Kevin Rogers the CEO was given the honour of switching on the
lights. Secondly because of recent postponements we hadn’t played a
competitive game for a few weeks, we knew Walsall would provide a seriously
tough test for the squad. Whatever side Walsall boss Darrell Clarke sent to
the Paycare Ground would be of a level far and above what many of the
squad had ever played against. What a fantastic experience and opportunity.
Before the game we spoke about the importance of our shape and work ethic
without the ball but stressed we must express ourselves in possession and
trust each other when we had the ball at our feet.
After 10 minutes into the game, I could see the lads were following our
instructions, I was really pleased with our approach play and discipline, all be
it so early in the game we had set our stall out. To go in at half time 1-0
down conceded just before half time was a bit of a blow, but before the game
we would have been happy with that. It’s really strange how expectations
change, its happened more than a few times this season when we
look back at games and think we should have got a point or maybe 7
8
three from a game we didn’t expect to. Maybe it’s about getting used to the
level we are playing at, and also believing in ourselves more. Walsall were
very good in the first half moving the ball with pace and working spaces well
which we expected to happen, but to see how easy they glided into space
and made really good use of the ball, by working hard for each other was a
lesson well learnt by the team. Our lads had to dig deep at times, which they
did, but I thought in the first half we looked dangerous on the counterattack.
We spoke about the challenges that lay ahead in the second half, firstly was
to get back in the game as quickly as possible and secondly it was vital we
did not lose our concentration and switch off, resulting in us going 3 or 4
goals down early in the half.
We thought our second half performance was better than the first, yes Walsall
had long spells of possession which we expected, but our discipline again
was tremendous. A composed bit of defending followed by a pass in behind
the Walsall defence, this allowed Romano to beat the centre half for pace over
15 yards, coolly placing the ball out of the keepers reach on his left hand side
bringing us back on level terms early in the half.
Walsall again took the lead late on, with an impressive counter attack, speed
guile and an end product saw the forward react sharp to tap in from 2 yards.
But again, our lads never stopped and with 2 minutes we managed to build
up some pressure on Walsall’s defence with a series of free kicks and corners.
From the last corner of the game with just seconds to go Leon Taylor rose
like a salmon to head home giving us a very welcome 2-2 draw. A top
performance and result from the lads especially given the opposition!
I have to say a very special thank you to Darrell Clarke, his backroom staff
and players who were magnificent on the night, they were brilliant
ambassadors for their club, no request from either set of supporters was too
much for them, they were fantastic with our lads, and it was great to spend an
hour chatting with Darrell and some of his staff before the players started to
arrive.
Tonight, we welcome, one of the favourites for promotion unbeaten
Wolverhampton Casuals, there is no doubt tonight's game will be another
massive test. We lost earlier in the season to two late goal at Brinsford
Stadium in a very close game. Both sides played well. So, to get something
out of tonight’s game we will need to raise our game in order to get anything
from the match.

Darlaston Town last night welcomed a record crowd of 451 to their
Paycare Ground to celebrate the official switching on of the new
floodlights installed during the closed season and to watch a select
Walsall Xl play against Darlaston’s first team who play in the Premier
Division of The West Midlands Regional League.
Since the club reformed in 2013 the volunteers and managers have
worked hard to return the club back to its former status following
promotion last season the club had reached another of its many goals.
As well as EFL Division Two side Walsall assisting the club in their
celebrations, the club welcomed long-term club sponsor Paycare
and their Chief Executive Kevin Rogers was given the task of
10
the official turn-on of the
floodlights, which took
place before kick-off.
Also present were longterm
club sponsors David
Owen from Rubery Owen
and Lorraine Owen from
PAL. Ruth Archer
represented The West
Midlands Regional
League and finally, but
not least, Chief
Executive of Birmingham
County F.A. Kevin
Shoemake and we are grateful for his continued support and advice in
moving the club forward, along with the continued support of these long
term sponsors.
The main entertainment for the evening was of course the game against
a Walsall Select XI managed on the night by Club Manager Darrell Clarke
and his back-room staff. Walsall squad for the evening contained several
first team players along with some Academy players and trialists.
Walsall went into the half-time interval one goal to the good, after
Callum Derry scored in the 42nd minute. A powerfully headed clearance
from the visitors defence allowed Walsall to attack at pace and seconds
later the ball nestled in the home team’s net. James Hardy selflessly
squared the ball to Callum Derry who passed the ball into an empty net.
Walsall had the majority of the play and possession in the first half as
you would
expect given
the different
levels between
the two sides,
however
Darlaston’s
shape and hard
work in keeping
out Walsall’s
young forward
line and fluid
midfield.
Darlaston’s
centre halves
Liam Smith,
Connor Fellows
and Ricardo
11
Ricketts working hard
together with wingbacks
Sam Causton
and Ryan Jones. Liam
Whittaker was in fine
form behind the home
defence pulling off
several saves as the
first half progressed.
The local community,
Darlaston and Walsall
supporters were well
entertained during the
game by some flowing
play from both sides.
Darlaston equalised four minutes into the second half through Romano
Graham with a crisp 18 yard finish giving the Walsall keeper no chance.
The home side continually made substitutions throughout the game on a
roll-on roll-off basis, but Darlaston grew in stature into the second half
creating more chances than the first with Romano Graham being put
clear after a clever reverse pass from fellow forward Leon Taylor but
could not get his shot off on time.
Walsall re-took
the lead in the
58th minute
following a well
worked move on
their left. The ball
finding the feet of
the onward
rushing Callum
Derry, who's
excellent control
allowed an effort
on goal which was
blocked by the
home keeper
Whittaker.
Walsall's No10
James Hardy powered a shot past the static Darlaston defence to put the
EFL side 2-1 up. Whittaker and his defence were stretched at times,
although Whittaker was nowhere near as busy as he was in the first half,
as the majority of play seemed to be in the midfield areas.
As the game drew to a close Darlaston were pressing for an
equaliser, which came 60 seconds from the final whistle. Leon
Taylor putting a powerful header over the line to bring the
12
scores level,
despite the
protests from
the Walsall
players that the
ball had
actually not
crossed the
line, referee
Howe, assisted
by linesman
Tony Lloyd who
flagged to say
the ball had
crossed the line
awarding
Darlaston the
draw. Shortly
after the re-start the referee blew the final whistle. A competitive game
for both sides, played at a good pace, and the large crowd was certainly
entertained for the whole 90 minutes
Darlaston would obviously like to thank Walsall Football Club, Secretary
and club manager Darrell Clarke for providing a team for the game,
enabling the club to break their attendance record at The Paycare
Ground. Whilst the club is always thankful for the support that they
receive from not only from their regular supporters but also from their
sponsors, they are hopeful that new friends have been made and that
Walsall supporters who came to the game will come to Darlaston on a
more regular basis when Walsall are not at home.
We cannot thank
the
local
community and the
towns folk of
Darlaston and
Walsall enough for
their support and
we would certainly
like to wish Darrell
Clarke,
his
backroom staff and
his squad the very
best for the
remainder of the
season.

“Beyond the
Dressing Room”
So, Tuesday night for anyone who is a Darlaston Town
1874 FC supporter or connected to the club was
probably their best occasion and game of football,
certainly since the club reformed in 2013. To watch the lads play against a
professional set up and compete must have been amazing to see. I say this
because whilst the match was being played most of the volunteers were frantically
pulling together working hard to provide our normal service to 3 times the number
we usually cater for.
The kitchen, bar, gate, maintenance, clean up, hospitality staff really did amazing.
Special thanks to our ball boys and mascots for carrying yourselves and the clubʼs
reputation so highly. Behind the scenes this week has been manic. Even though
the Wednesfield game was called off, volunteers were still at the club as we had a
private function on the evening, working well into the early hours of Sunday
morning donating their time just for the love of their club. Just a few hours later the
clean-up crew were back in action at 7am to get the clubhouse back into shape
ahead of games to played on Sunday morning and afternoon.
Last Sunday afternoon our ladies team were at home, so the Pavilion was serving
hot drinks and food until about 6 pm Sunday evening before the focus switched
onto the preparation required for Tuesday evenings celebrations and game. Cash
and Carry stock runs, food preparations, shopping for items, kit cleaning and
organisation, programme writing and printing. Games don't just happen at
Darlaston there is so much that goes into making it run like clockwork. Neil had
spent time a substantial number of hours drafting, planning and organising the
club so that when Tuesday came, we were all clear on our roles and jobs for the
evening making sure everything ran smoothly, which of course it did.
18
This week we have also been working on a really special project in fact it's been a
few months in the making, it was to organise and deliver a poppy display. The
display was to be hung with others in Darlaston along the Remembrance Day
parade route. I personally took the lead to annoy all our supporters, volunteers
and friends and family to donate handmade poppies in order to make the clubs
display. Last Sunday club stalwart Gilbert Preece and first team manager Andy
Parkes accompanied by Emma his wife, along with yours truly went to hang the
finished article outside Darlaston Town Hall ahead of the parade. The club have
already posted pictures and an article about this, but the display to me signalled
lots of people coming together to remember those who fought for our freedom. To
me Remembrance Day is so important. Generations should be aware and continue
to respect those who gave the biggest of sacrifices for us and to see everyone
come together and donate in the numbers they did meant we were able to
produce a display I was so very proud of.

Donations came from as far away as Preston and involved young and old and it's
projects like this that really bring home how special our club is. We can usually
turn our hands to most things and the biggest of challenges become manageable
when we work together for the common cause.
On Tuesday volunteers coped brilliantly, everyone mucked in together and pulled
off the evening with supporter numbers far higher than we were used to. At some
point I am sure I muttered 'I wouldn't want to do this every week' because after a
long day in full paid work to come and work until 1am then get back up to work on
the morning was tough, even more tough when it was so so busy but to see the
smiles on supporters and to hear the chairman say the fateful words of 'well we
coped' was a real buzz and a great end to a fantastic evening, when the club are
sure to have made new friends.
I couldn't sleep when I got home, was exhausted at work the next day because I
had a few hourʼs sleep but the exhilaration and the comments and praise the club
has had since on social media about our set up, our volunteers and our
professionalism for a small club has been amazing.
I always say that while it's easy to focus on what's going on around you in nonleague,
who has what, who is doing what, who is reaching this level etc it's easy
to miss the journey your own club is taking. We should all be more than proud that
in a few short years this club has gone from almost not existing and not playing
football to midweek games under floodlights against a professional team and we
smashed it!
So, I am more than proud!
Tonight, we have a tough local test and one where mutual respect between the
two clubs is clear, but win lose or draw we all get behind our boys and support
them as they give it their all to represent our club.
So, shout, whoop, clap and cheer your hearts out. We are one club, one vision and
one big extended family

A BRIEF
HISTORY
The very earliest records show that the club began as Wolverhampton
Old Church F.C. based in the Fighting Cocks, Penn area of
Wolverhampton. In 1914 the club changed its name to Wolverhampton
Amateurs and played at Langley Road and Beckminster playing fields.
1946 the club merged with Old Wulfrunians to form a gentlemen’s
sporting club to provide a whole range of sporting teams. The club’s
name was changed to Staffordshire Casuals and although the liaison
with Old Wulfrunians was short lived, the Staffordshire Casuals
continued as a football team and established a new base at Bantock
Park.
The 50’s saw the Staffordshire Casuals as the most successful team in
the Birmingham AFA Football League winning the league three years in
succession and winning several cup competitions. During the late 50s
the Casuals moved their base to Aldersley Stadium also spending a
short time at Codsall playing fields, before purchasing their current
home at Brinsford Lane, Coven Heath.
Another era of tremendous success coincided with the move to the
club’s own ground. After being one of the founder members of the
Birmingham A.F.A and winning the Premier Division of that league in
1980/81, Wolverhampton Casuals applied to join the West Midlands
League. They were elected to Division Two in 1981/82 and after two
seasons, were promoted to Division One, for the 1984/85 season. In
the following three years the club enjoyed tremendous success,
finishing as runners-up in three consecutive seasons. In 1985/86, they
also won the Division One Cup and finished runners-up in the Walsall
Senior Cup.
After these three impressive seasons and finally meeting the ground
grading requirements, the club was promoted to the West
22
Midlands League Premier Division in 1987/88. However, after two
seasons in the top flight, the ground grading requirements were
updated and included the requirement of floodlights, which at the time
the club’s Brinsford Road hadn't got. Therefore the club was relegated
back into Division One for the 1991/92 season.
After winning Division One in season 1994/95 and in order to play in
the Premier Division the club played their League games at Aldersley
Stadium for two seasons to fulfil the ground grading requirements
whilst members of the club worked hard and raised the necessary
funds to install the required floodlights .
Wolverhampton Casuals were crowned Staffordshire County FA Vase
winners in season the 1997/98 season,. The following season they
lost in the final of the same competition and also the semi final of the
League Cup semi final.
During the 200/01 season the club won their most prestigious trophy
to date by beating Sutton Town to win the Walsall Senior Cup. This
was followed in 2001/02 with the club finishing third in the Premier
Division and once again they reached the League Cup semi final.
At the end of the 2004/05 season the club finished eleventh, the
club’s highest finish for a few seasons as they finished in the bottom
half of the table. At the end of the 2010/11 season saw a welcome
change in the Casuals fortunes finishing twelfth and reaching the West
Midlands Premier League cup final for the first time, thus achieving
another milestone in its history.
For three consecutive season Casuals finished third in 2011/12,
2012/13 & 2013/14 and in 2012-13 were runners up in the
prestigious J W Hunt Cup.
Season 2014-15 & 2015-16 saw Casuals finish a credible sixth
position. The following season in 2016/17 Casuals recorded their
highest finish in the West Midlands (Regional) League finishing second
behind Haughmond. The following season the club finished a
disappointing ninth. At the beginning of the 2018-19 season the club
appointed Dean Gill as manager with his team they finished third and
won the league cup in their first season, playing arguably the best
most consistent football seen at the Casuals for many seasons.

Around the League
Since our last league game the weather has taken its toll and the last two
Saturday fixtures has seen numerous games wiped out.
On Saturday 19 October Shifnal Town made it ten league wins on the trot with a
5-1 home win against early season promotion favourites Wolves Sporting. A
Kyle Montague hat trick was at the heart of the win with Tom Hill and substitute
Ben Novis also on target. Jake Healy netted Sporting’s consolation goal.
Bewdley fell to their second defeat of the season at the Aspray Arena the home
of Dudley Town. Dan Jones and Lewis Archer put the Robins 2 goals ahead
before a brace from Luke Morris brought Bewdley level. Lewis Taylor Boyce
netted the winner for Dudley. Both sides finished the game with 10 men with
Jason Hewitt for Dudley and Bewdley keeper Joe Sideway given their marching
orders on 85 minutes. The win saw Dudley rise to fourth in the League table.
Littleton and AFC Bridgnorth fought out a 2-2 draw. Dean Fisher with a brace
for the home side, Matthew Dean and Elliott Lee on target for Bridgnorth.
Wednesfield were surprise 2-1 winners at Pershore Town. James Baldwin gave
Town the lead on the stroke of half time but 2 goals in the final 10 minutes from
Will Osborne and substitute Zac Campbell Jackson saw Wednesfield return with
all 3 points. In his first game at the helm new Bilston boss Wayne Spicer saw his
charges return from Shawbury United with a 1-0 win. Substitute Ryan Sappleton
Williams with the only goal of the game.
Just four Premier Division games beat the weather on Saturday 2 November with
Shifnal Town extending their winning streak to 11 league games with a 5-0
home win against AFC Bridgnorth. The Division’s leading scorer Tom Hill helped
himself to a hat trick with Kyle Montague and Craig Radford also finding the net.
Bilston Town travelled to Worcestershire and returned home with a 3-0 win at
Pershore Town. Kevin Nickle with a brace and former Darlaston striker Sam Melia
were on the scoresheet.
Managerless Black Country Rangers won 3-2 away at Littleton. Ben Billingham
and Adam Garmston were on target for the home side but goals from Danny
Meek, Jarad Daniels and Kayelden Brown secured the points for Rangers. Callum
Briscoe opened the scoring for Wem Town, but a late own goal secured
Wolverhampton Sporting a point in a 1-1 draw.
In the only midweek league game Wolves Sporting went ahead with
24
former Darlaston midfielder Isaac Cooper opening the scoring on 8 minutes
against Shawbury United. Debutant George Burslem equalised on 30 minutes
and thought he had netted the Shawbury winner putting them in front on 92
minutes. Unbelievably Sporting went straight up the pitch to grab a dramatic
93rd equaliser through Tai Reece Amari.
Midweek fixtures saw AFC Bridgnorth and Shifnal Town progress in the League
Cup with victories over Wednesfield and Dudley Sports respectively. Bridgnorth
edged home 2-1 against Wednesfield, Anwar Ologbun getting both goals for the
home side. Shifnal were again on the rampage with a 7-0 win against Sports,
Tom Hill netted 4, Ben Novis 2 and Sam McCarthy rounded off the scorers.
Just one Premier Division game beat the weather on Saturday at Queen Street,
Bilston where Shifnal extended their winning streak to 12 league games
extending their lead at the top of the table to 12 points although second placed
Bewdley Town have 2 games in hand. Shifnal beat Bilston 6-4 after leading 6-1
before 3 late goals gave the scoreline an air of respectability.
In Division One a Tom Fallon hat trick was the high point in sending Allscott to
the top of the table demoting Wellington Amateurs to second spot after beating
“Ams” 5-4. Louis Jones and an own goal completed the scoring for Allscott. In
the top of the table clash in Division Two AFC Bentley leap frogged Coven
Athletic to go top after coming from 3-1 behind to win 4-3. Liam Hughes netted
all four Bentley goals.
