who lives
Downtown?
Like or love
living
Work in
Downtown or
DVI’s 2018-2019 State
of Downtown Report
BRIEFING
By The Florida Times-Union Editorial Board
Thumbs up for Visit
Jacksonville’s new app,
especially the guided
tours. African-American
history, top parks, to
brew pubs, there is
a tour for just about
everyone.
Thumbs up for plans to
resurrect and revive the
historic Jacksonville
Armory. This is a
classic structure that
needs to be saved. It has
been empty too long.
Thumbs up for
Downtown Vision’s
project to add lighting
along Laura Street,
not just during the
holidays but year-round.
A little progress should
be celebrated.
Thumbs down for
the poor lighting
Downtown, especially
along the riverwalks.
There is no excuse for
all the light bulbs that
are out. Poor designs
make it worse.
Thumbs down for
Jacksonville’s glacial
progress on dealing
with parking. The
proposal by former DIA
HITS & MISSES
board member Dane
Grey to take it over
revealed how much we
are missing.
Thumbs up to the
Downtown Investment
Authority for offering
the public to speak
at the start of every
meeting, not requiring
a three-hour wait like
some public boards.
Thumbs down for the
city’s failure to seriously
consider reusing the
Jacksonville Landing.
Like the old Civic
Auditorium, it probably
could have saved money
for taxpayers.
Thumbs up for the
lynching exhibit at the
Museum of Science and
History and for moving
it to other public
spaces Downtown.
Understanding our
history helps us
understand our city.
Thumbs up to Visit
Jacksonville’s new
mobile visitor van,
which deals much
better with the
840 square miles of
DUUVAL. Brick and
mortar should be
minimal.
Thumbs up for plans to
add a boutique grocer
to the developers
of the former JEA
and Independent Life
building at 233 W. Duval
St. It will be an iconic
mark of progress.
Thumbs up for DIA
CEO Lori Boyer’s
plan to focus retail
Downtown along the
Elbow on Main Street
and in the Laura-Hogan
street area. Ample
parking is nearby.
Two-way streets will be
added.
Thumbs up for Council
Member Matt Carlucci’s
plan to boost the
Historic Preservation
Fund. Many Downtown
buildings need a
little boost to make
developments viable.
Thumbs up for the
incentives that were
used to attract and
keep FIS Financial
Services to the
Brooklyn area. These
incentives have
produced huge benefits.
“This has been like a 50-year objective in Jacksonville to
do something Downtown. We are probably as anxious as
anybody to break this curse and get something going.”
