Bicycle patrols are more
visible. Police zone commanders
remind people to report crime
because there are so few serious
incidents. Perception created
by empty, dark streets is
the real issue.
Lori Boyer hit the ground
running as expected as CEO
of the DIA. But it’s all good
with City Council members
expressing strong support for
funding subsidies for historic
structures like Snyder Memorial.
Apartments can’t be built fast
enough, with nearly 100 percent
occupancy the rule. And with
Vestcor winning a competitive bid
for market-rate housing in LaVilla,
a barrier was broken. Housing
now has new momentum.
Early indicators are positive
about out-of-town developers
interested in the former
courthouse and city hall sites.
Also, South Florida developers
are involved in the armory project.
The District is hitting its deadlines.
TRANSPORTATION
CONVENTION CENTER
There is more interest than
ever in Downtown Jacksonville.
Long-vacant properties like the
old Independent Life Building
at 233 W. Duval St. and the
National Guard Armory now
have developer commitments.
With a $100,000 subsidy from
Vestcor, the Lift Ev’ry Voice and
Sing Park in LaVilla will finally give
visitors something to see.
The Regional Transportation
Center will celebrate LaVilla and
local transportation history.
This score will increase once
the Regional Transportation
Center opens in April.
A new on-call shuttle service
in San Marco, subsidized by businesses,
offers a model
for Downtown.
The Prime Osborn Convention
Center looks especially dull
across the street from the bright,
shining, ultramodern Regional
Transportation Center. This
probably will have to wait for a
completed District and Lot J.
OVERALL RATING
The rating is trending up because it feels like
Downtown has passed from inertia to momentum.
There are cranes in Brooklyn and developers competing
for vacant lots in LaVilla. The FIS headquarters would
be the first Downtown highrise in over a decade.
