A Letter from
Rich Anderson
Executive Director/CEO
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
We would not be where we are today if it wasn’t for the amazing volunteers we have!
We are excited to spotlight two volunteers, Donna and Urvi on the cover of this new
issue of The Shaggy Sheet. Also joining them is Pressley, who is alive today thanks
to the caring support of friends like you. Please be sure to read all about them and
the many rewards of volunteering on page 9.
It’s been a very eventful year so far at Peggy Adams. We are incredibly grateful
that Hurricane Dorian spared us in South Florida, but our hearts continue go
out to all of those in the Bahamas. With the generous support of our community,
Peggy Adams organized three flights to transport more than 160 dogs and cats from
the Bahamas to Florida. Peggy Adams received 69 of these animals – some of which
are still available for adoption.
2019 has already been a record breaking year for finding new loving homes for
homeless and abandoned cats and dogs. In fact, adoptions have increased so much,
we have been able to transfer the highest number of animals in history from Palm
Beach County Animal & Control to Peggy Adams. These are animals that otherwise
would be at risk of losing their lives due to overcrowding at the county-run shelter.
To read about our adoption milestones, see page 5.
Unique to this edition – both covers are front covers!
Not only have we made an incredible impact this year on the animals in our
community, we are now just one year away from being able to save twice as many
animals! In February, we broke ground on our new state-of-the-art Pet Adoption
& Humane Education Center. Inside these pages, you will see renderings and
floor plans… you’ll learn how this will increase our capacity to provide care to the
community, and… how YOU can help!
I truly can’t thank you enough. You are making an amazing, lifesaving difference for
animals right here in Palm Beach County!
Please enjoy this latest issue of The Shaggy Sheet and contact me directly should
you have questions or if you’d like to schedule a visit and tour to see the important
work you make possible every day at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League.
COUNTDOWN 2 ZERO Initiative
Nearly 200 pets found their forever homes at the
sixth annual Countdown 2 Zero (C2Z) Adoption
Event, presented by The Lois Pope LIFE Foundation,
on September 28, at the South Florida Fairgrounds
Expo Center in West Palm Beach. This annual event,
organized by Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
and Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control, is a
collaborative effort of over 20 local rescue and partner
groups dedicated to saving the lives of Palm Beach
County animals. Over the last six C2Z Adoption
events, more than 1,500 animals have found
forever homes.
“This annual event is just one of the many ways we
can come together to help support the important
C2Z initiative,” said Dianne Suave, Director of Palm
Beach County Animal Care & Control. “In addition
to advocating for the adoption of local rescue animals
in need of loving homes, we also strongly encourage
everyone to spay/neuter their pets, as this is the most
humane way to reduce the number of unwanted
puppies and kittens born each day in Palm Beach
County,” Sauve added.
Opening Ceremonies: Commissioner Gregg Weiss,
Dianne Sauve, Dr. Michelle Durkee, Lois Pope,
Rich Anderson, Dorritt Miller
Thousands of guests attended the Countdown 2 Zero
Adoption Event to find their perfect match. Onsite
were hundreds of Palm Beach County’s adoptable
dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, bunnies, rats and
chickens, and other pint-sized pets. “The Countdown
2 Zero Adoption Event is the largest pet adoption
event in Palm Beach County, and we are excited that
195 animals found loving, forever homes!” said Rich
Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of Peggy Adams
Animal Rescue League. “This equates to 390 animals
saved because every adopted animal makes room in
a shelter for another pet who will not be at risk to be
euthanized due to pet overpopulation. C2Z is a true
collaboration to achieve this goal and it’s exactly what
Countdown 2 Zero is all about; adopting from a local
shelter when looking for a new pet.”
ADOPTION Milestones
The goal of the Countdown 2 Zero (C2Z) initiative is
to save every adoptable animal in Palm Beach County
by the year 2024. Launched in 2014 by Peggy Adams
Animal Rescue League, Palm Beach County Animal
Care & Control (AC&C) and the Palm Beach County
Board of County Commissioners, we are making
incredible progress!
Before the launch of C2Z five years ago, Palm Beach
County Animal Care & Control was saving less than
50% of the abandoned, lost, sick and injured animals
it received. Today, the County shelter is saving nearly
8 out of every 10 dogs and cats that come through
its doors.
We are also grateful to the collaborative spirit of the
rescue community that has rallied around the C2Z
effort. To date, nearly 200 rescue organizations have
helped save the lives of more than 10,000 dogs, cats,
puppies and kittens when the County shelter has
been overwhelmed with animals in need. (You can
see a list of every organization and how many
animals they have helped the County shelter save at
www.Countdown2Zero.org/stats - *Please note that
Peggy Adams is listed as Animal Rescue League
and dogs & cats are listed separately because not all
rescues listed accept both dogs & cats).
From January 1, 2019 to October 25, 2019, Peggy
Adams has transferred 703 cats and 863 dogs from
AC&C into our care; a total of 1,566! That is the
highest number in one year!
Together – as a community – we can save every
animal possible in Palm Beach County.
Here’s how you can help us achieve our C2Z goal:
• Adopt a rescue animal
• Become a Foster Volunteer
• Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR)
• Spay and Neuter
• Donate
On Sunday, August 4 th , a Good Samaritan
discovered 3 dogs abandoned in a dumpster and
called AC&C Dispatch. Unfortunately, 2 of the dogs
did not survive. The third dog, a beautiful, bright-eyed
French Bulldog mix, did survive and was transferred
to Peggy Adams the next day.
The Frenchie, now named Riser, received the TLC that
she needed at Peggy Adams. Within a few days, she
was adopted into a wonderful, loving home with her
new mom, Holly. Upon arriving home, Holly gave us
the following update: Riser is happily acclimating to
her posse (as she has 3 other small dogs) and Riser
just wants to spend every
waking moment
curled up
in her
mom's lap.
Riser
Adopted
Peggy Adams Coordinates State-Wide Airlift of 83 Dogs and 75 Cats from the Bahamas
Even before Hurricane Dorian struck the Bahamas
with such destructive force, Peggy Adams Animal
Rescue League was working to organize a state-wide
response to the disaster. Peggy Adams knew that Palm
Beach County alone would not be able to meet the
dire need that was going to come.
Forty-seven of the animals (26 dogs and 21 cats)
received care at Peggy Adams and were quarantined
for 30 days before they were ready for adoption.
Most required medical attention. Some needed spay/
neuter surgery while others received treatment for
conditions such as heartworm, skin ailments and
tick-borne diseases.
Thanks to you and your support, we are able to
respond with our emergency rescue partners and
together, build a more humane community even in the
face of a major disaster like Hurricane Dorian. And,
you’ll allow us to be ready to help additional animals
from the Bahamas that may need us, and to continue
saving more lost and abandoned animals right here in
Palm Beach County.
Working side-by-side with Peggy Adams were:
Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, Humane
Society of Broward County, Humane Society of
Greater Miami, Cat Depot (Sarasota), Humane Society
of Naples, Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, Animal
Welfare League of Charlotte County (Port Charlotte),
and Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue (Bradenton).
And, it wasn’t just a state effort. In conjunction with
the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW),
GreaterGood.org and Wings of Rescue, Peggy Adams
coordinated airlifts on September 16 th and 17 th
of 158 dogs and cats to empty the Bahamas Humane
Society in Nassau to make room for animals lost and
separated from their owners during the storm. We
also helped coordinate the delivery of more than 3,000
pounds of emergency pet food.
Special thanks to our
friends at Scenthound
who came to Peggy
Adams to bathe and
trim the nails of all
our new Bahamian
rescues.
HAPPY TAILS
Magnum (aka Bruce),
Adopted September 9
“
We have renamed
him Magnum,
after Magnum PI.
My husband is a
fan! Magnum is
doing great! He is a
ball of love and we are
enjoying having him. He
had a busy first week with
a grooming appointment and
introductions to our cats. We have a long way to go
with the cats. We start obedience training this week to
help with commands and socialization.”
– Melissa Burns
our family. After the loss of our beloved Rudy, our
14-year-old Chihuahua, we knew the only way to heal
the hole in our hearts was to rescue a precious pup
and give him/her the life they deserve. When
we saw Rome, we fell in love instantly! Rome was a
bit timid at first as he inspected his new family, but
his fun-loving, energetic, inquisitive, and playful
spirit glimmered through. Rome gives and gets
unconditional love and affection, makes us laugh
everyday with his funny antics, and is the absolute
best companion for his big brothers and furry sister.
While we may have rescued Rome, we are the ones
who are eternally grateful to have him in our lives.
Thank you for all of your hard work to rescue all of
the wonderful animals and connect them with their
forever homes.” All the best, Jennifer Mielnik
Magnum is 6 years old and was transferred to Peggy
Adams from Puerto Rico where he spent most of his
days roped to the back of a stationary pickup truck. He
now has a life where he can move freely and a family
that will give him the love he deserves. He is a graduate
of Peggy Adams’ Good Dog Training Program.
Rome (aka Tucker), Adopted June 6
“
It’s hard to imagine our life before Rome (formerly
known as Tucker), who has brought us countless
amounts of joy, happiness, and love since joining
Peanut, adopted June 17 from PetSupermarket, WPB
“
Peanut is doing wonderful and is such a joy in our home. Peanut
absolutely loves his big sister Kasey. He is so well behaved, lovable,
sweet and has a fantabulous personality as we all know how much
kittens LOVE to play. He has a little rambunctious side and loves to do
Zoomies all around the house! Lol. I knew as soon as I saw him that
he would be coming home with me. His favorite toy is his crinkle balls.
Running joke is we only went to get cat treats and ended up coming
home with a kitten! I could go on and on about my fur baby! Peanut has
settled in very nicely! Thank you so much!” Sincerely, Christine Sanderso
“The reason I started volunteering at Peggy Adams
is because of my passion for animals. It’s been a year
since I started and I cannot imagine not coming here
and looking at all the happy wagging tails. The dogs
definitely change your life and they know nothing more
than spreading happiness. The League holds a special
“The volunteers at Peggy Adams are PAWSOME!
They love me and my fur-friends so much. We love
the long walks, day trips out of the shelter looking for
new parents to adopt us, yummy treats they give us for
sitting and looking pretty, and all the belly rubs.”
ANOTHER Happy Tail…
Prior to Hurricane Dorian, Wendy Erneston
(a Peggy Adams’ pet store volunteer) offered to foster
kittens Scarlet and Harmony along with 10-yearold
Lady from the PetSmart Outlet Mall. During
their time hunkering down, all the cats bonded
to one another. With loving hearts, the Erneston
family decided to adopt all three cats! Wendy stated,
“I know Peggy Adams is trying to make space for
other animals in need in this community and in
the Bahamas due to Hurricane Dorian. The cats all
adapted well to our home. I don’t want to split up the
kittens and we have a big home for them to thrive in.”
Peggy Adams has adoptable cats in various off-site
locations in Palm Beach County. The League also
brings adoptable dogs to off-site events!
The Schneiders bring a fresh perspective to their
philanthropy that follows a famous Jewish proverb:
“you never soar so high as when you stoop down to
help a child or an animal.” Beryl and Bob visited Peggy
Adams Animal Rescue League on April 25 th , having
learned of our life-saving work from neighbors in
Palm Beach Gardens.
“We were so very impressed by our tour of your
facilities to see the wonderful work you accomplish
with the animals,” they wrote in June. That note was
accompanied by an extraordinary gift. They have
established an endowment legacy gift of $500,000 –
The Beryl and Robert Schneider Endowment
Fund – to be used for animal food and medical care
in perpetuity.
“This gift is such a thrill for us to announce,” exclaims
Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of Peggy
Adams. “The first endowment gift we are aware
of here was the one given in 1989 in memory of
Peggy Adams, re-naming the Animal Rescue League
(founded in 1925) in her name. Her memorial created
the bedrock upon which we have been able to build
the services we are able to offer today. This gift from
Beryl and Bob follows that special legacy and will help
to save thousands of precious lives going forward into
the future. We are so grateful.”
For information about establishing a legacy gift at Peggy Adams,
please contact Kim Hanson, Major/Planned Gifts Officer at
561-472-8576 or K.Hanson@PeggyAdams.org
Have you ever wanted to add a pet to your family, but you just
couldn’t? If you are someone who wants to “watch over” the canine
and feline residents in our dog and cat adoption center, in a way that
hovers above the rest, then please become one of our Guardian Angels.
A Guardian Angel funds the care of our resident cats or dogs in a
specific condo or kennel. During your year as a Guardian Angel, you’ll
be helping a number of pets as they await their forever home.
Your status will be recognized with a card on your sponsored condo
or kennel naming you, your family, or your business as that pet’s
Guardian Angel. You’ll also receive a certificate and a special angel pin.
Anyone who visits the shelter will be reminded of your generosity.
The average cost of care for a dog or cat in our program is $19 a day
and the average length of stay with us is 30 days.
NEW PET ADOPTION & HUMANE EDUCATION CENTER
Peggy Adams staff members and the team from
KAST Construction gather September 24 th to
celebrate the start of excavations for the
foundation of the new Pet Adoption & Humane
Education Center.
Construction is fully underway for the new Pet
Adoption & Humane Education Center at Peggy
Adams Animal Rescue League. Slated to open in
November 2020, the new Center will have the capacity
to double the number of lives rescued, enabling Peggy
Adams to save thousands more dogs, cats, puppies
and kittens.
The Center will also feature dedicated classroom
space to inaugurate county-wide humane education
programs, notes Rich Anderson, Executive Director/
CEO of Peggy Adams. “These programs are sorely
lacking in our community. Educating more people –
youth in particular – about the humane treatment of
animals, is critical to the prevention of cruelty, abuse
and the abandonment of animals,” Anderson added.
“Hundreds of generous donors are coming together
to make this dream a reality for our community,” he
continues. “The facility will provide state-of-the-art
accommodations for the animals sheltering here, as
well as an enhanced adoption experience for families
and individuals seeking a dog or a cat to love.”
Demolition of the Gray House, the original
dwelling on the League’s 13.2-acre site located at
3200 N. Military Trail in West Palm Beach, took
place September 24th, clearing the way for
excavation of the foundation for the new Center.
Designed by Jackson & Ryan Architects of Houston,
Texas, specialists in the field of animal shelter design,
the Center is being built by KAST Construction.
KAST is the largest general contractor in Palm
Beach County and one of the largest privately held
construction companies in the Southeast.
NEW PET ADOPTION & HUMANE EDUCATION CENTER
The new Center features a Cat Adoption Wing at
the east end of the structure and three Dog Adoption
Wings. Areas already named are shown in orange.
The Cat Adoption Wing includes four large, group
cat apartments with catios, allowing the animals to
access freely an outdoor area facing butterfly gardens.
A central cat tower with condos for cats preferring
to be housed individually fills the center of the Cat
Adoption Wing, with Cat Colony Rooms for small
groups of related kitties facing the lobby and along
the north wall.
Dog wings include large Dog Adoption Rooms for
groups of compatible animals as well as individual
dog kennels, all with outdoor patios readily accessed
by the animals housed there. At the end of each wing,
there is an outdoor dog play yard where daily play
groups, as well as behavior classes for the public, can
be held, covered to protect participants from strong
sun and rain, and with fans to circulate and cool
the air.
To the rear of the Cat Adoption Wing are located the
veterinarian office, volunteer office, a large volunteer
workroom/conference room, a volunteer lounge and a
general conference room, as well as a grooming room,
photography studio and pharmacy.
Commemorative bricks will be laid in the entry way
to the new center as well as in the outdoor café area,
while trees and benches honoring special pets and
family members will be featured throughout the
grounds and the visitors’ areas.
Orange areas indicate spaces already
reserved as of November 1, 2019
Dog Kennels – Dog Adoption Rooms – Play Yards
Seven galleries welcome visitors to the individual
dog kennels. Visitors look through large windows into
the kennel area to see if there is a pet they would like
to meet. Adoption counselors can introduce a pet to
a prospective family in the Get Acquainted Rooms
in each Adoption Counseling Lobby or walk with
them to one of eight meet-and-greet patios located in
central courtyards in the Dog Adoption Wing.
Twenty-four large rooms featuring home-like settings
for groups of compatible dogs allow visitors to enjoy
interacting with prospective pets. Like the individual
kennels, each Dog Adoption Room offers the dogs
free access to an outdoor patio. Dog Adoption Rooms
also feature noise-reducing glass to create a less
stressful environment for the animals while they are
awaiting adoption. The dogs at Peggy Adams enjoy a
daily playgroup with their friends as well as regular
walks by dedicated volunteers and staff throughout
each day. The play yards are central to our Behavior
program which not only manages the play groups, but
also offers free and low-cost behavior training to the
general public.
Cat Apartment with Catio – Cat Condo – Colony Room
A variety of living spaces support the individualized
needs of cats coming to us for care. Cats enjoying
group living will have four large apartments with
garden-side outdoor “catios” freely accessible to them.
Related families will have fifteen cat colony rooms,
eight of which open onto the lobby where visitors can
enjoy seeing the cats at play through the windows.
Cats preferring solo living will be housed in condos
in our central cat tower. A cat café will invite visitors
to relax and unwind while playing with some of
the adoptable cats and kittens looking for their
forever home.
