Roadworks cause restaurant closure
Christopher Palma.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A BANGLADESHI restaurant
has become a casualty of the
ongoing Riccarton Rd roadworks.
Nobanno manager Christopher
Palma said the roadworks
were the “last straw”.
The site near the intersection
of Clarence St and Straven Rd
is its third location in Christchurch
in 12 years.
The restaurant first opened
on the corner of Armagh and
Colombo St in the central city
before it was destroyed in the
February, 2011, earthquake.
“We lost everything in the
earthquake,” Mr Palma said.
They then moved to Ferry Rd
in Ferrymead, but the business
suffered there too from roadworks.
“We have gone through loss
after loss, it is heartbreaking,”
he said.
The city council halting roadworks
on Riccarton Rd to help
businesses leading into Christmas
had come too late, he said.
“It is not enough because the
damage has been done,” Mr
Palma said.
The year of ongoing roadworks
had put the restaurant in
debt, he said.
Back to
reality for
property
values
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
SOCKBURN AND Upper
Riccarton property values have
fallen 7 per cent since 2016 - the
biggest drop across Christchurch.
The new Quotable Value data
reveals the average capital value of
a house in the two suburbs is now
$452,200.
Quotable Value general manager
David Nagel said following the February,
2011, earthquake there was
a lot of demand for “safe” homes
in Sockburn and Upper Riccarton,
with buyers competing for limited
stock, forcing prices up.
But that demand had now
dropped as house hunters went
elsewhere. Valuations had decreased
in line with that demand.
The latest data had shown a
rebalancing of house values across
Christchurch, he said.
In the 2016 the western side
of the city, including Upper Riccarton
and Sockburn, had some of
the highest increases.
In comparison, Banks
Peninsula which was lagging
behind in the 2016 revaluation,
has skyrocketed with a 9.7 per
cent increase.
Hydroslide open longer at Halswell
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
STAFFING CHANGES at the
Te: Hapua: Halswell Summer
Pool have led to its outdoor
hydroslide being open for longer
on Friday nights.
The city council has adjusted
starting and finishing times
for staff members working at
the outdoor pool to allow the
hydroslide to remain open until
8pm on Fridays.
It was after Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton
deputy chairman
Andrei
Moore asked
city council staff
why the pool’s
hydroslide was
still closing
early on Fridays
when the rest
of the pool was
open later.
Andrei Moore
Before the changes were made,
while the swimming pool closed
at 9pm on Friday nights, the
hydroslide still closed at 6pm.
Longer hours at the pool are
currently being trialled following
pressure from the community.
Mr Moore said following
contacting the city council they
resolved the issue within a couple
of days.
He said it was a “very effective
“This will be a great low-cost
he said.
Car parking major
concern for businesses
• From page 1
Mr Palma is now job hunting.
Since February, Fulton
Hogan has been working on
the Harakeke to Matipo Sts
section of Riccarton Rd.
Dumplings on Riccarton
owner Peter Wah said it has
been a very “strenuous” past
six months.
On top of a family tragedy
which forced the business to
close temporaily, the roadworks
were also causing major
issues attracting customers.
“It has been quieter, it is
very hard to make up for all
those losses we will never
catch up.
In any business, you need car
parks on the front,” Mr Wah
said.
But he had very loyal customers
who have helped in
every way they can.
They don’t plan to close.
He is concerned businesses
on Riccarton Rd will lose
most of its car parking following
the roadworks.
The city council said when
DECEMBER
specials
work is completed there will
be time-restricted parking
provided to the east of Rotherham
St and south of Riccarton
Rd.
Parking will be provided
east of Picton Ave outside the
bus lane hours while parking
on the north side of the road
parking will be retained between
Straven Rd and Picton
Ave.
Parking between Rimu St
and Straven Rd was upgraded
One-way entry and exit system
called for at retirement village
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A ONE-WAY entry and exit
system could help resolve car
parking issues at a busy
retirement village in
Wigram.
Platinum Drive residents
are supportive of
a one-way system where
drivers can enter the
Summerset at Wigram
premises via Platinum
Drive and exit onto
Awatea Rd.
The solution was suggested
at the Halswell-
Hornby-Riccarton Community
Board recently.
But it won’t be making any
decisions on solutions to the
problem until they have done
a site visit to Summerset next
Thursday.
“We are going to have a site
visit and then consider it at a
subsequent board meeting,”
board chairman Mike Mora said.
It is after the board held off a
second time on deciding whether
to paint yellow lines outside the
Mike Mora
retirement village.
High parking demands have
been causing issues in the area
due to Summerset staff and
commuters parking on
Platinum Drive.
Summerset at Wigram
residents have been
calling for yellow lines
to be painted near the
Platinum Drive entrance
to the retirement village.
But Platinum Drive
residents are worried if
yellow lines are painted
outside the village staff
members and commuters will
park outside their properties -
shifting the problem.
They would instead prefer to
see a one-way system installed
along with the safety improvements
planned for Awatea Rd to
be completed in June.
A Summerset spokeswoman
said it can’t comment on specific
plans such as the one-way system
until it has seen the detail of
what is being proposed.
Platinum Drive resident Mel
Jackson recently asked the board
PROBLEMATIC: Summerset at Wigram residents want yellow
lines outside their village due to visibility concerns.
to take action with Summerset
management and hold them to
account regarding their building
consent conditions.
“The village has a nominated
main entrance on Awatea Rd...
why is this not being used exclusively
for its intended purpose?
“The building consent for
Summerset facility clearly states
that Platinum Drive service
entrance is for limited resident
use...I have witnessed the lane
being used by all ages especially
visitors”.
Resident Tracy McLean said
Summerset was not letting staff
use the allocated car parks until
its final units are sold.
The retirement village had
experienced additional cars on
site while selling its final units
and this was set to reduce by the
end of December when the final
units sold.
But Summerset’s village manager
Russell Walters said the 35
car parks on site are for visitors
and staff to use.
“There are no restrictions on
who can use the car park”.
Mr Walters said the Platinum
Drive entrance is not deemed as
a service access in the resource
consent but a secondary access to
the village.
He said the car parking for
the village was constructed in accordance
to the resource consent
for the development of the village
granted in 2014.
The village’s resource consent
recorded there was to be a total
of 35 parks for staff and visitors
and an additional 174 car
parking spaces on-site for villas.
Damian Reid, new owner
of Henry’s Hornby
Fresh new look and personal
service set this liquor store apart
There’s a fresh new vibe at Henry’s
Hornby in Shands Road. New owner
Damian Reid started improving
the store from the day he took over
the business in September, and the
makeover is now complete.
Shelving has been rearranged to
open up more space for customers
to browse around the displays, new
LED lights have been installed in the
fridges, some of them in bright colours
rather than white to create another
point of difference, and new signs have
been put up.
A state-of-the-art wine-cooling
machine has been added, where
customers can have their bottles of
wine cooled in five minutes or less – so
convenient when picking up a bottle
to take straight to a Christmas party.
And Henry’s Hornby has an excellent
selection of wines you won’t find in the
supermarket, Damian says.
“We have also doubled our craft beer
range, and we have some great specials
for Christmas, such as multiple gift
packs and limited Christmas editions
of bottled spirits.”
ADVERTORIAL
A local Hornby resident, Damian
aims to provide his customers with
the kind of friendly, personalised
service he believes has been lost to the
industry in recent years.
He and his staff have a combined 50
years’ experience in the liquor trade,
so are able to help customers with all
their liquor requirements for over the
festive season.
Henry’s Hornby is located at 21
Headaches don’t have to be suffered in silence
Most people experience a headache
now and again but, although they
are common, they do not have to be
part of your daily life.
Headaches can be caused by
many different conditions and
includes pain both in the head and
neck. The brain tissue itself is not
sensitive to pain as it lacks pain
receptors. Rather, the pain is caused
by disturbance of pain-sensitive
structures around the brain.
Studies have shown that roughly
a third of all people suffer from
headaches equaling as many as 45
million people suffering from chronic
or severe headaches that seriously
interfere with their lives.
Headaches vary in intensity and have
different symptoms including pain in
the head, visual impairment (blurred
vision), nausea and vomiting, hearing
impairment, confusion, discomfort
and irritability.
Headaches can be caused by a
number of different reasons with
spinal misalignments involved in
up to 80% of all headaches. Other
reasons include certain foods,
toxic fumes, preservatives and
alcohol are all contributing factors
to headaches.
Tension headaches are the most
common type of headache for both
adults and children. Trigger points
include lack of sleep, emotional
tension at home, work or school,
second-hand cigarette smoke,
skipped meals, poor nutrition, eye
strain and bright lights.
How Chiropractic care helps
Your spine protects your nervous
system, which starts with the brain
and becomes the spinal cord. When
the vertebrae in your neck can not
move properly, this irritates or puts
pressure on the nerves in that area,
causing headaches.
Chiropractic care addresses the
cause of many types of headaches
so can remove or dramatically
reduce both how often headaches
occur and how long they last. A New
Zealand Government study finding
the majority of people who suffered
from spinal misalignments had their
headache relies or their condition
improved through Chiropractic care.
The reason Chiropractic care
can work is because headaches
are usually due to what is called
subluxations in the spine.
Chiropractors can perform
chiropractic adjustments to remove
pressure on the nerves, which then
also helps to improve nerve function.
In today’s fast paced world, many
people think headaches are a
normal ailment that they just have
to put up with so next time you
Musical director nominated
for major online award
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
WHEN MATT Everingham
took the big risk to move
overseas to break into America’s
music scene, he knew it would be
no walk in the park.
But within eight months of
establishing himself as an up and
coming pianist, musical director
and composer in the United
States, the 24-year-old has been
nominated for a top award for
his musical direction.
A former Broomfield resident,
Everingham’s name has been put
forward for “Best Music Direction”
in the Broadway World
Regional 2019 Awards.
Everingham, 24, was nominated
for his work as a musical director
for musical Next to Normal at the
Tibbits Opera House in Michigan
by a member from the Michigan
theatre community.
Broadway World is one of the
largest online databases in the
United States for theatre news
and profiles, with an audience of
5.5 million online.
“It came as a complete surprise,
but I was thrilled. Next to
Normal is a really powerful piece
of theatre, and it was a thrill just
to work on the production itself,
so to have my music direction
recognised in this way is a real
honour” Everingham said.
He is up against about 60
other musical directors from the
Michigan and Detroit region.
“Especially as a conductor/
pianist, it is always a gift having a
carefully written piano part that
is so well woven into an intricate
orchestration. It really allows the
music to sing.
RISING STAR: Up
and coming pianist,
musical director
and composer
Matt Everingham
working on musical
Next to Normal at
the Tibbits Opera
House in Michigan.
Everingham said the score in
the musical works to shape the
audience’s experience of issues of
mental health, grief, depression,
drug abuse and family breakdown
is very powerful.
“It was a moving job to be able
to bring that music to life in such
a powerful story”.
Everingham worked on the
project from late August and
throughout September.
He is now based in Vermont
working as an assistant music
director in Northern Stage’s production
of The Sound of Music.
In January, he will head back
to his home base in New York
City when his contract with
Northern Stage ends.
Everingham first flew to New
York in April and has since been
working in various parts of the
United States as a musical director,
conductor and pianist.
He said what he has loved most
about living in America is being
able to do what he loves for a living,
pursuing a career in music
direction while experience parts
of the USA he never thought he
would.
He said the American theatre
industry is a lot larger with more
companies, productions, artists
and training programmes.
“The essential ingredients, however,
are the same; alongside having
the necessary skills it is being a
kind, collaborative artist takes you
a long way in an industry that relies
so much on working together,”
Everingham said.
Avonhead
Park
Cemetery
name
change
A CEMETERY remembering
those who lost their lives in the
February 22, 2011 earthquake
could be one step closer to
having its name changed.
The city council is seeking
feedback on whether the Avonhead
Park Cemetery should be
renamed the Avonhead Memorial
Cemetery.
It has gone out for consultation
following a request from the
Friends of Avonhead Cemetery
for the name change and this is
supported by the Quake Families
Trust.
The cemetery was developed
in the late 1970s as a lawn
cemetery without visible grave
markers to give the cemetery a
park-like appearance.
Following the February 22
2011 earthquake, the city council
designed an interment site for victims
at Avonhead Park Cemetery.
Feedback can be made to the
city council until January 22.
To make a submission go to ccc.
govt.nz and click on the city
council’s “Have Your Say” page.
Organisation helping elderly
with technology to close down
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A PLUNGE in membership
has seen a long-standing
organisation dedicated to helping
the improve their technology
skills close down.
SeniorNet Garden City, based
in Upper Riccarton has closed
down after about 20 years of operating
due to a lack of members.
Established in 1999, the organisation
offered computer tuition
for members aged 60+ and
was lead by others of a similar
age who understood the benefits
and frustrations of learning new
technology.
Treasurer Murray McKay,
who joined in 2000, said when
he started the organisation had
more than 300 members.
Over the years membership
numbers have whittled down to
about 43.
“We might have 43 members
but when you run a class only
two to three turn-up,” Mr Mc-
Kay said.
The organisation had its last
closing down meeting about
three weeks ago. Over the next
couple of weeks, the committee
will continue to clean out the old
members.
“Any money left goes to charity”.
Mr McKay, who doesn’t own a
cellphone himself, said it is likely
memberships have dropped due
to the younger generation leading
the older generation in their
use of technology.
“I think it is the younger
generation coming up and running
around with things in their
hands. It has been a trend, even
with those running the courses.
Most of them are using their
own phones or units”.
Mr McKay first joined when
he bought himself a laptop and
thought he better learn how to
use it.
Within a year, he was a treasurer
on the committee and even
did a small amount of tutoring.
But he said he specialised in
teaching others about using database
systems and spreadsheets.
“Nobody was interested in it
that much”.
The classes started out in old
Hornby Clocktower building
before it moved to the Upper
Riccarton Methodist Church.
Mr McKay said the highlight
has been the comradeship and
meeting new people.
He described the ending of
the organisation as a “bit of a
shame”.
Sports hub receives top award
SPORT
NGA PUNA Wai Sports Hub
has received top honours at
the New Zealand Recreation
Association awards.
The hub, which combines
facilities for athletics, hockey,
rugby league and tennis, won
the Outstanding Project Award
at a ceremony in Hamilton on
November 28.
It was judged on the NZRA
awards criteria of innovation,
community engagement, excellence,
efficiency, achievement
and sustainability.
Taiora QEll Recreation and
Sport Centre also won a Merit
Award in the same Outstanding
Project category, which is for a
successful development or major
redevelopment of a facility.
Nga Puna Wai began as a
partnership project between
Athletics Canterbury, Canterbury
Hockey, Canterbury Rugby
League and Tennis Canterbury,
Sport Canterbury, and the city
council.
The venues and grounds used
by these organisations were
damaged by the earthquakes in
2010 and 2011 and athletes and
Zealand Recreation Association awards for its facilities which hosts rugby league, athletics,
players were having to travel
outside Christchurch for suitable
facilities.
Creating a shared sporting
hub was seen as the most costeffective
way to rebuild multiple
facilities rather than constructing
them all separately.
Nga Puna Wai, which is next
to the Canterbury Agricultural
Park in Wigram, opened in stages
from late 2018 and has become
the new home for the four sporting
codes, as well as providing
community playing fields.
Nga Puna Wai Sports Trust
chairman Paul Rogers said the
partnership has led to a much
better outcome than if each
sports organisation, which uses it
had built their own facilities.
“The benefits include greater
value for money, more stakeholder
involvement and a greater
sense of responsibility and ownership,
said Mr Rogers.
“Consultation with the local
community and various partners
was vital and it has happened
through every step of the project
from initial planning to completion.
The outcome is that a grassy
reserve has been transformed
into a $54 million international
standard sports facility.”
Nga Puna Wai has already
hosted the National Athletics
Championships, which were
held in Christchurch for the first
time in 10 years, and international
hockey event, the FIH Pro
League series.
Sport Canterbury chief executive
Julyan Falloon said the hub
is a massive boost for local sport.
“It not only meets the needs
of the local community, promoting
participation across
sporting codes, it also benefits
the Christchurch economy attracting
competitors and their
supporters for national and
international events being held
here, he said.
“On top of that, there’s wide
exposure of Christchurch on television
and live stream coverage
of the events.”
City council recreation and
sports services manager David
Bailey said the award is welcome
recognition of the city council’s
partnership with the local
sporting community to create a
regional sports facility.
“Nga Puna Wai is a great
example of how sporting codes,
a local sports trust and a local
authority can collaborate
effectively,” said Mr Bailey.
Young volleyballers thrive
on beach and court
• By Jacob Page
BURNSIDE HIGH School
junior girls volleyballers
dominated on both the sand
and the court last week.
Not only did their indoor
volleyball team win backto-back
South Island titles
but Rosa Vesty and Taylah
Holdem took out the beach
title as well.
The duo will head to Auckland
in February to represent
their school at the nationals,
where they finished fifth last
year.
Teacher in charge of volleyball
Sam Ryburn said they had
a good chance of medalling
this year.
“Last year they made the
quarter-finals and lost to the
eventual winners so if they
can improve on that they
should go close.”
He said both Rosa and
Taylah were key parts in the
indoor success having been
named co-most valuable players
at the South Island championships
at Pioneer Stadium.
Burnside took down Cashmere
High School 25-22, 25-9
SPORT
TALENT: Burnside High School junior volleyball team won
the South Island title for the second year in a row.
in the final.
Both teams had to overcame
an early loss in crossover pool
play to make the final.
Burnside suffered a loss
to Christchurch Girls’ High
School, while Cashmere High
went down to Richmond’s
Waimea College.
Ryburn said the team refocused
well after the loss and
was able to bounce-back.
“They came at us and really
pushed us but sometimes you
need a loss like that in a tournament
just to get you on the
right track again.”
He said it was great the team
could win back-to-back Canterbury
and South Island titles
BRIGHT FUTURES: Rosa
Vesty, left, and Taylah
Holdem capped a stellar
week by claiming the
South Island junior beach
volleyball title at the
Pioneer Stadium Pit.
which was a first for the school.
“We have a lot of depth in
volleyball at the school and a
supportive environment which
helps bring success at both a
junior and senior level over a
number of years,” he said.
TĀTOU KO MERE E WHAKAPONO ANA
FROM THE BOARD
As the school year draws to a close, it is wonderful to see students’ hard work and
commitment honoured at prizegiving ceremonies. Well done on your achievements.
This year the Board has been working closely with the Bishop and the Diocese Property
Group in overseeing planning for our new school at Papanui in 2023. Alongside
technical work, students and staff have been contributing, through workshops, a
survey and providing input into the development of our cultural narrative, which will
be reflected in the new school buildings and grounds.
While this whole new layer of work progresses, Marian College continues to deliver
high quality teaching and learning and providing wonderful opportunities and
experiences for students. Thank you to Marian staff, Marian College Foundation,
PTA, the Bishop and the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch for your support this year.
We have been thrilled by the steady growth of Rauru – for past students and staff of
Marian College, St Mary’s College Christchurch and McKillop College. To reconnect
with us, please register on the Marian website and follow us on Facebook.
Finally, congratulations to our 2019 graduates.
We trust the gospel values will guide you well,
as you venture forth beyond the school gates.
We wish you all the very best.
ESSAY WINNER
CHRISTMAS HOME BAKING
Congratulations to Malaika Sequeira who has won the Catholic Agency
for Justice, Peace and Development prize, senior category. This
year the essay and multimedia topic was Enabling Communities –
Everyone has a part to play. Malaika’s winning essay described how
to enable communities to ensure the spirit of participation is extended
to everyone, regardless of intellectual, physical, mental or social
challenges. She showed a sound understanding of the principles of
Catholic Social Teaching, such as Human Dignity, the Common Good,
Solidarity and Subsidiarity. Malaika won a cash prize for herself and her
class and the Justice and Peace Cup for Marian to appreciate for a year.
The giving season lasts all year at Marian, with every student completing at
least six hours of meaningful service within the school and community. Recently
some of our Year 9 and 10 students organised gift-wrapped home baking and
hand-made Christmas cards for families attending the Tafesilafa’i Early Learning
Centre. Marian College has a long tradition of service – both students and staff are
actively involved. Pictured here from left are Anna-Naina Aileone, Taylor Poole-
Readers divided over bus lane fines
Readers respond to Western
News’ article on more than
$350,000 in fines being
handed out to drivers for
crossing over the bus lane
on Riccarton Rd earlier than
50m to turn left at Deans Ave
Grant Wells: The modernday
mafia.
Andrea Lamont: Out of all
the signage around Christchurch
only just noticed a sign saying
you are not allowed to drive
down this bus lane on Riccarton
Rd. I am usually to busy trying
to concentrate on driving rather
than reading every signage.
Looks like I am going to be
stung.
Judith Callanan: Don’t drive
in bus lane and you won’t get
fined. Stop whinging and learn
road rules.
Carolyn Fraser: For goodness
sake. They take up half the road.
It’s unavoidable sometimes.
Carl Jones: I was 70 seconds
early before a bus lane stopped
being a bus lane, still had to pay.
Neil Langdon: It’s been a
known fact since the existence
of bus lanes. How is this chump
been able to be a driving instructor?
James Boswell: Ignorance isn’t
a defence.
Scotty Wilson: Revenue raising.
Alistair Price: I have just been
CAUGHT OUT: Riccarton resident Gavin Marriott called a $150 fine for crossing over a bus lane
on Riccarton Rd too early to turn left onto Deans Ave a “rip off”. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
to Brisbane. I was surprised at
the lack of bus lanes where we
travelled in and around Brisbane.
The policy in Brisbane you
must let the bus go first or get
fined. We travelled in peak hour
traffic and the traffic flow was a
lot better than what we suffer in
Christchurch. There are a lot more
buses in Brisbane. They are everywhere.
Did our city traffic planners
get it wrong with bus lanes? Maybe
create a law to let the buses go first.
And forget the bus lanes and save
the city council a heap of money.
Sorry forgot the bus lane offences
are a revenue stream for the city
council.
Darren Kellett: Person did an
offence. Check. Person ignored
the signs. Check. Person says
there should be more signage.
Check. Person complains in media.
Check. Person thinks their
excuses are the one that means
the offence is unreasonable.
Check. Media reports it again
and again with only variables the
drivers and locations.
LeRulz Fran: It is ridiculous.
He’s right about needing more
signage telling people where
they can cross into it. The lack of
signage contributes to the serious
congestion at intersections like
the one turning right from Cranford
St onto Main North Rd.
Lee-anne Ward: I got the same
on Papanui Rd. No sign. They
told me to check the road code I
have been driving for years and
don’t tend to read the road code
often. I asked how I was supposed
to work out where 50 meters
begun. They wouldn’t budge
total rip off and then wouldn’t let
me pay the fine off but said if it
went to court I could then pay it
off. Pathetic really.
Leonie Rich: That really sucks,
Riccarton Rd is always so busy, I
travel around there weekly. I will
watch the bus lane more from
now on.
yourselves to indulge in these
delicious meatless tacos.
Tacos de Hongo
(Mushroom Tacos)
Serves 2
Ingredients
For the black beans
1 can black beans, drained and
rinsed
For the mushroom filling
6 cloves garlic, finely chopped
vegetable stock
30 button mushrooms, stemmed
and chopped
2 ½ Tbsp (non-spicy) chilli powder
1 ½ Tbsp paprika (plus more for
tomato salad)
1 Tbsp dried minced onion
sea salt
¼ cup fresh lime juice (from
about 2 limes), divided
2 ½ Tbsp natural tomato sauce
For the tomato salad and
guacamole
2 tomatoes, diced
½ red onion, diced
1 handful of fresh corriander,
chopped
1 avocado
garlic powder
For serving
4 lettuce leaves
6 hard-shelled tacos
hot sauce (optional)
Directions
Saute the garlic in a bit of
vegetable stock in a saucepan over
medium heat; add the chopped
mushrooms and sauté, stirring
occasionally, until mushrooms
shrink and become chewy. Add
the chilli, paprika, dried minced
onion, sea salt, and a couple of
tablespoons of fresh lime juice;
stir well to combine. Add the
tomato sauce and cook, stirring
occasionally. Taste and add more
tomato and/or spices, if desired.
Make the tomato salad:
Combine the diced tomatoes, red
onions, and corriander in a bowl
and squeeze some fresh lime juice
over; season with paprika and sea
salt to taste.
Make a quick guacamole:
Mash the avocado in a separate
bowl and season with sea salt, garlic
powder, and lime juice to taste.
Prepare a bed of lettuce for the
black beans.
Heat the taco shells. Build each
taco, starting with the mushroom
base, followed by the guacamole,
then finish with the tomato
salad on top. Drizzle with hot
sauce (if using). Serve with black
beans (simply heat and season as
desired).
Replace greasy wings at
a party with these spicy,
crunchy cauliflower bites.
Crispy Buffalo Cauliflower
Bites
Makes 6 cups
Ingredients
⅔ cup brown rice flour
2 Tbsp almond flour
1 Tbsp tomato paste
2 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp onion powder
2 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp dried parsley
1 head cauliflower, cut into
medium florets
⅓ cup hot sauce or barbecue
sauce
Directions
Preheat oven to 230 deg C. Line
two trays with baking paper.
Combine the brown rice flour,
almond flour, tomato paste, garlic
powder, onion powder, paprika,
parsley, and ⅔ cup of water in a
blender. Puree until the batter
is smooth and thick. Transfer to
a bowl and add the cauliflower
florets; toss until the florets are
well coated with the batter.
Arrange in a single layer on the
trays, making sure that the florets
do not touch each other. Bake
for 20-25min, until crisp on the
edges. They will not get crispy all
over while still in the oven.
Remove from the heat and let
stand for 3min to crisp up a bit
more. Transfer to a bowl, drizzle
with sauce and serve immediately.
Architecturally designed to blend in
to the hill and maximise the sun and
stunning uninterrupted views this 1977
pole house has an air and feel of quality
and longevity about it.
Over engineered and extremely strong,
there are 4 double bedrooms, bathroom
and laundry etc. on the middle level whilst
on the 3rd floor lovely large open plan
living, dining and kitchen flowing on to
a large North, Northwest facing deck,
perfect for drinking in those captivating
and ever changing views.
Cleverly designed to maximise the
winter sun whilst giving some relief from
the summer sun this property is both
sheltered from the prevailing wind and
very very private. Is set over 1723m2 on
2 separate titles which gives the option of
selling one if required. The properties are
both beautifully landscaped and planted
attracting plentiful birdlife and birdsong.
The lower level of the house is a
triple garage with excellent storage and
workshop areas and gives internal access
in to the house. Classical simplicity with
floor to ceiling windows, well insulated
and double glazed, all timbers are treated
and the property is on mains water and
sewerage. Good access and off-street
parking round off a very appealing
package.
This is the first time to the market but
my vendors are retiring reluctantly and
this very special and unique property will
need to have a new owner. Includes boat
shed on Paradise Beach.
