WELCOME TO MARSHFIELD

welcome

Nutz Deep II | Visit Marshfield

Welcome to our fine city! This is an exciting time

to visit Marshfield, and I invite you to discover what makes

Marshfield Made New.

Marshfield has a lot to celebrate in 2020. Many

improvements were made to our city in 2019, and we

are looking forward to new, exciting additions in the near

future. We saw the completion of major projects including the Marshfield

Clinic Health System YMCA expansion, featuring a state-of-the-art

fitness and wellness facility that includes a cutting-edge, multi-sport,

indoor complex. The Marshfield High School also completed the new

Kenneth & Ardyce Heiting Community Stadium, hosting record crowds

for football and soccer games. The Wildwood Zoo opened a new welcome

center and expanded Pat & Floyd Hamus Cougar Exhibit last fall. Visitors

will enjoy a smooth ride into Marshfield from the north as Central Avenue,

our main street, was completely reconstructed for better access to our

businesses and entertainment.

Our burgeoning downtown provides great options for visitors to unearth

what’s uniquely Marshfield. You can enjoy a steaming cup of locally roasted

coffee at the new Uptown Coffee Company and feast on a Friday night fish

fry for dinner, after shopping at our variety of boutique stores. I challenge

you to try to break free from Escape Room Marshfield, or to beat the

summer heat take the kids to cool off in the water feature at the Wenzel

Family Plaza. No matter what you choose, there’s something for the entire

family to enjoy while visiting our city.

Marshfield is welcoming two new hospitality businesses that we are

sure our visitors will love this year. The Pizza Ranch all-you-can-eat buffet

restaurant (opening early 2020) will be a sure-fire hit for hungry families

with kids. Nearby, the Hilton Hampton Inn & Suites (opening fall of 2020)

will be a welcome addition to Marshfield’s hotel portfolio. Read about these

new additions and more in the following pages of this guide.

Whether you are here visiting for our world-class health care, business,

or a fun getaway for the family, this guide will point you in the right

direction, and I hope you enjoy Marshfield Made New.

WEEKEND GETAWAYS

MARSHFIELD MADE NEW

Kenneth & Ardyce Heiting Community Stadium | Melissa Siegler, Marshfield News-Herald

Marshfield, Wisconsin: What does this community

mean to you?

Ask the citizens and visitors of Marshfield this question, and

you’re sure to receive a variety of answers. Some may say that

Marshfield is best represented by the Marshfield Clinic Health

System, and will recount stories of compassion and world-class

care they or their family members received. Others relate to

Marshfield’s agricultural foundations, and can share timeless

memories of the simple pleasures of spending days at festivals

like the Central Wisconsin State Fair or Dairyfest. Still others

could share their enthusiasm

for Marshfield as a great

place for families and

entertainment, describing

excellent dining options,

specialty boutique shopping,

and fun-filled summer days

visiting Wenzel Family Plaza

located downtown.

No matter what your

answer may be, one thing is for sure – Marshfield is a place that

pays homage to its rich, storied past, while embracing and planning

for a vibrant future. You only need to take a closer look around to

see and experience the changes and feel the excitement in the air.

Inevitably, the question visitors will ask after spending some time

away, is “What’s new in Marshfield?” Well, everything.

In the topographical sense, Marshfield is changing by building new

facilities to support its future. The Marshfield Clinic Health System

(MCHS), moving far beyond its humble beginnings as six founding

physicians in 1916, continues to provide outstanding care to its

patients and deliver on quality of medicine through research and

innovation. It has also committed to improving quality of life and

wellness with the completion of a multi-million-dollar expansion of

the Marshfield Clinic Health System YMCA. The Roehl Fieldhouse

has an all-new fitness center that includes three full-sized

basketball/multi-sport courts and new running track. The expansion

at the MCHS YMCA includes a Healthy Living Center, Strength

Training Center, Multi-Generational Community Room, and more.

Visitors traveling to Marshfield for healthcare needs will also find

another welcome sight near Marshfield Medical Center—a new

Hampton Inn & Suites. The hotel, opening this fall at 400 W. Upham

Street, will have 86 rooms, featuring 24 studio suites, an exercise

room, and an indoor heated pool.

Marshfield High School’s new football field and track facility is

another example of Marshfield’s commitment to future excellence.

4,000 spectators and is used for football, track and soccer. It was

constructed with artificial turf for extended seasonal use, making

it perfect for wet conditions. Among the other features of the

stadium are an apparel store, expanded concessions, and press

boxes. This is the largest upgrade to Marshfield school district’s

athletic fields since 1968, and opens up the opportunity to host

track meets, playoff football games, and invitational tournaments.

The multimillion-dollar project, $7 million of which was covered

by private donations, also includes new baseball and softball fields

across the street from the high school.

Wildwood Zoo, built in 1937, still educates visitors about the

wonders of the natural world with its impressive array of animal

exhibits. Today, you can visit the newly expanded Floyd & Pat

Hamus Cougar Exhibit and Zoo Welcome Center, located at the

center of the zoo, near star residents Kodiak bears Munsey and

Boda. This big cat exhibit boasts ten times more room than its

previous space and incorporates a more natural, feline-friendly

environment. Inside the Welcome Center, you’ll get a unique,

behind-the-scenes view of the cougar handling area and have

access to conveniently located restrooms. Other features include

small animal exhibits and children’s interactive water display

teaching the importance of water quality and the water cycle.

And so, with these additions and many more to come,

Marshfield celebrates this renewal by presenting a new brand to

characterize the excitement that is represented everywhere you

look: Marshfield Made New.

The past is still ever-present, whether you’re finding new

treasures in specialty antique stores downtown or enjoying a pint

at the Blue Heron Brewpub, housed in the former Parkin Place ice

cream factory. Meet up with friends to sip an espresso con panna

or iced blue jasmine tea in a refurbished 1800s hardware store

that’s now home to family-owned Uptown Coffee Company. This

coffeehouse is known for its dedication to curated coffees, upscale

décor, and welcoming vibes.

You’ll find Jurustic Park north of town, a wonderland of metal

sculptures created by Clyde Wynia. It’s a place where old

schoolhouse bells and forgotten hand tools become creatures that

tower over and delight kids of all ages. Marshfield’s appreciation

of this artistic transformation of old to new is visible in the many

Jurustic Park sculptures adorning businesses and public spaces

throughout the city.

Marshfield Made New is a promise that Marshfield makes and

delivers on, over and over again. But amidst the celebration of

new and exciting attractions, facilities, and activities, Marshfield

is always a place that preserves the past, breathes life into it, and

makes it new, through care.

So come and indulge your curiosity. Enjoy your time, unwind,

and take in all the ways Marshfield is Made New. You’ll be amazed

by all you find.

Wenzel Family Plaza | Visit Marshfield

AWARD-WINNING DOWNTOWN DESTINATION CELEBRATES FIRST ANNIVERSARY

The Wenzel Family Plaza, Marshfield’s year-round community square

and event hub located in the heart of downtown, has had an exceptional

year. Thanks to the efforts of Wenzel Family Plaza coordinator Nicki

Ryner, local restaurants and organizational partners, a wide array

of fun activities and events took place at the plaza in 2019. From

May to September, the plaza hosted nearly 70 events that brought

approximately 5,000 attendees out to the plaza.

The plaza’s summer season kicked off in May with the push of a

button, turning on the ever-popular water feature. The festivities

included a welcome from Mayor Bob McManus, a Wisconsin Dells

Book Giveaway raffle and yard games, which packed the plaza as

people came out in droves

to celebrate. All summer,

delighted children chased

and jumped through bursting

jets of water, again, and

again, and again. Clearly,

the water feature was a

refreshing stop for families,

with an average visitation of

20 families per day.

Lunch in the Plaza offered

the opportunity for people

to get out of their normal,

hum-drum routine to listen

to live music while enjoying

a meal in the plaza. Delicious

fare included grilled Cajun

wraps, jalapeno burgers, fresh

chicken Caesar salads, juicy cheddar brats, and tasty mac and cheese

(and more!) for kids of all ages. By partnering with local downtown

restaurants MoJo’s Pasta House & Cajun Cook Shack on Thursdays and

The Rivers on Fridays, the plaza became the place to be to enjoy weekly

camaraderie with friends in the afternoon sun before the busy weekend.

Every Friday from May to October the Downtown Friday Nights

Summer Concert Series was hosted by the Chestnut Center for

the Arts and Wenzel Family Plaza. It filled the air with tunes from

talented musicians performing on the Everett & Dolores Roehl

Stage. The music lineup was as diverse as it was entertaining. Styles

of music ranged from the up-tempo Celtic and Folk duo the foxfire

affair to the high energy rock jams of In The Groove (performing

during Dairyfest), and beyond. Karaoke nights and singer/songwriter

showcases also headlined the plaza stage to appreciative audiences

throughout the summer.

The plaza also became a place of peace and praise. On Saturdays, the

popular Yoga in the Plaza events filled the grassy grounds with yoga mats

and attendees wanting to stretch away stress and achieve some morning

Zen. Local church groups also gathered at the plaza on select Sundays for

worship services and offered activities for youth groups.

In August, foodies were wined and dined with an elegant experience

at the Farm to Table event hosted by The Rivers restaurant. Chef

Doug Weerts carefully crafted a menu showcasing fresh ingredients

from local farmers and vendors. The meal began with roasted vegetable

cheese curd quiche, followed by beef tenderloin in cherry port sauce

or bone-in chicken with cranberry au jus paired with honey glazed

carrots, sautéed Swiss chard, and ended deliciously with Sabayon maple

shortcake with fresh berries. This exceptional cuisine looked as great

as it tasted, arranged on a seasonal tablescape of crisp linens with fresh

greenery and terrariums. As a final touch, local musician Ben Ryner

accompanied the event from the stage all evening.

A less formal and more traditional German event brought out beer

and music lovers alike at Oktoberfest in September. A variety of bands

played throughout the day, as fest fans feasted on brats, pretzels, and

mouthwatering desserts. Inside the beer tent, they washed it all down

with microbrews from downtown’s Blue Heron Brewpub and played the

nail-slamming game of Hammerschlagen.

The Wenzel Family Plaza continues to win over the favor of travelers

and citizens alike, and after celebrating only one year, it has won the

Best Public Improvement Project through the Wisconsin Economic

Development Corporation and won a 2019 Great Places Wisconsin

award by the American Planning Association Wisconsin chapter.

The Wenzel Family Plaza will also gain national notoriety during a

Marshfield episode of the PBS show Around the Corner with John

McGivern, airing in spring of 2020.

The Wenzel Family Plaza’s programming promises to expand its

offerings of family-centric fun for 2020. This momentum will certainly

make for another exciting year, and continue to make Marshfield Made

New as it welcomes visitors young and old to enjoy and participate in the

downtown community season after season. For more information on

upcoming Wenzel Family Plaza events, go to visitmarshfield.com.

WOOD COUNTY SUPPORTS UTV BOOM

WITH NEW TRAILS AND ROUTES

Local economies benefit from the newest outdoor trend

UTVs are the hottest outdoor trend and Wood County is making

strides to further the pastime’s growth in Central Wisconsin. In June

2019, the county opened 42 miles of on-road routes and 7 miles of

off-road trails for UTV/ATV use. Three months later, they announced

10 new ATV/UTV campsites in Pittsville’s Dexter Park and more than

$400,000 in grants that will fund route and trail maintenance.

“The new routes and campsites demonstrate Wood County’s

commitment to growing off-road tourism,” says Scott Larson,

Executive Director, Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce

and Industry. “It’s a growing trend throughout the state and, with

UTV registrations approaching the 400,000 range nationally, we

must take advantage of the growth and cater to it in order to bring

visitors to our area.”

The new Wood County routes were strategically designed to connect

to existing mainline routes and trails, thereby linking to adjacent

counties. The goal: bring new visitors and dollars through the area.

“A study from the County Highway and Planning Departments

estimated the economic impact of the new routes to be around

$355 to $427 per visiting rider,” says Matt McLean, Director, Visit

Marshfield. “Not only are these developments a great asset for avid

riders, but they will invigorate local businesses by increasing traffic

from an under-tapped group of visitors and consumers.”

A 2011 case study of the Cheese County Trail in southern

Wisconsin found that the total combined spending of all trail users

exceeded $15 million during the 12-month study. 86% of that

amount was from non-local trail users. A similar 2015 study in

Jackson county estimated the impact to be between $7.6 million

and $9.2 million annually.

“These aren’t small numbers,” says Mandy Witt, co-owner and

CMO, Power Pac. “This type of tourism will do real things for our

local economies and Central Wisconsin can no longer be seen as a

‘drive through’ area on the way to the Northwoods. We applaud Wood

County for seeing this vision and we’ll do everything we can at Power

Pac to assist in this strategic growth for our local communities.”

5 TIPS FOR CHOOSING

THE RIGHT UTV

Looking to get in on the UTV trend? There are a number of things

to consider when shopping for a UTV. Kyle Skoug, Powersports

Salesman for Power Pac, asks his customers first: what do you

want to do with your vehicle? His tips are below.

• SPEED/TRAIL RIDING: If speed and adventure is the name of

your game, then consider the Polaris RZR® or Yamaha YXZ®. Built

for off-road performance and designed for width-restricted trails,

the RZR and YXZ are for the rider looking to insert some highspeed

adventure into his/her life.

• LEISURE: Looking for a vehicle to drive around the campground

or drive leisurely down trails or UTV-approved roads? The

Kawasaki SX is an affordable choice that still performs.

• WORK: Need a workhorse to help with yardwork, hauling or

farm chores? The Polaris Ranger has been the #1 trusted vehicle

by farmers, hunters, and homeowners for 10 years straight. The

Kawasaki Mule is also a great work machine. Looking for a more

economical version? The Ranger 500 or the Kawasaki Mule Pro-FX

are both worth taking a look at.

• I WANT IT ALL: If you are looking for work and play – chores

and trail riding – the Polaris General or Yamaha Wolverine are

great options. With towing performance, a dump box and great

ground clearance and suspension, you can get your work done

AND dominate the toughest trail. Kawasaki Teryx® is a more

economical option here and still has a 783 cc engine and dumpbox.

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER:

• PASSENGER ROOM: You’ll want to think through how many

passengers you want your side by side to accommodate. Models

have 2, 3, 4 or 6-seat options.

• TECH: Some brands now offer GPS and touch screen systems

that you can add to your unit which can make navigating trails a

lot easier. The software allows you to plan trips, track and share

rides and even log service.

• BELLS AND WHISTLES: You can customize your side by side in a

number of ways:

o Heavy trail rider going on longer excursions? There are

luggage or storage accessories you can add to your machine.

o Avid hunter? Brands now offer gun racks and cases that attach

to your machine to keep your gun or bow stored safely and

out of the elements while you ride.

o Looking for music or comfort? Other add-ons include sound

systems, cab upgrades, heat and even air conditioning.

o Sick of hefty snow plowing bills? Don’t forget to ask about

plow and cab packages for your work machine.

Maple Fall Fest | Kimberly Kopp

MARSHFIELD MAPLE FALL FEST: SWEET FAMILY AFFAIR CELEBRATES 28TH YEAR

The start of fall in Marshfield and its crisp autumn days is our city’s

own Maple Fall Fest. This year the festival takes over Wildwood Park &

Zoo on September 19 & 20, 2020—keeping with a 28-year tradition.

Families start the day with a hearty potato pancake breakfast served by

Columbus Catholic School Athletics. They fill up on flapjacks topped

with melted butter, locally produced maple syrup, with sides including

maple sausages, and, of course, cheese curds. Maple Fall Fest draws

visitors and families out in droves, with approximately 15,000 attendees

between Saturday and Sunday.

Marshfield Maple Fall Fest has become known as the place to find

some of the best original, handmade craft items and artwork in the

Midwest. With over 150 vendors, you’ll delight in finding that distinctive,

one-of-kind gift for yourself or someone special. Shoppers can also

peruse Amish booths selling spectacular mums and hearty baked goods,

along with other specialty foods with mouth-watering maple flavors.

You can eat you way around the fest at the centrally located food

court, enjoy a cold brew in the Beer Garden, and keep the kids amused

as they play in the Kid’s Zone. Throughout the weekend, spectators

gather to watch dance performances by local troupes, take a tour

through Wildwood Zoo,

and experience the zoo’s

new, fun and educational

Welcome Center.

In 2019, a new

educational demonstration

by the Marshfield Monarchs

was a big hit on the main

stage. The audience learned

about the life cycle of the

butterfly, and the special

project taken on by the

Gwiazda family. The family

began raising monarch

butterflies to help increase

the dwindling population;

only one out of every 10-

20 caterpillars becomes

a monarch butterfly. The group released 100 endangered monarch

butterflies to the wonder of over 200 spectators of all ages. Maple Fall

Fest marked the start of the butterflies’ migration from Wildwood Zoo as

they began a long journey south to Mexico for the winter. “We wanted

to do something special for the monarchs and for all the people, and a big

release seemed like the

right thing to do,” said

Melissa Gwiazda. The

Gwiazdas are excited

to start the butterflyraising

process again in

the spring of 2020.

The Maple Syrup and

Maple Dessert contests

are time honored

traditions at the festival.

Syrup producers and

bakers from all over the

region compete for the

top three cash prizes

and bragging rights each year. The Maple Dessert contest is so popular

that a cookbook was created to showcase winning maple dessert recipes

from the past. Contest judging takes place at the Maple Village, as

onlookers and contestants relish watching the panel of “celebrity” judges

sample the entries. They watch for subtle signs of approval or dismay

from the judges’ expressions, each hoping to claim a win.

Throughout the years, maple dessert contest entrant Debbie Appleyard-

Forrest considers the Maple Fall Fest Maple Dessert contest to be a family

tradition with special meaning that goes beyond the sweet taste of victory.

Debbie and her family, spanning generations from the core family group

(growing to brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces, and beyond), have

entered tasty maple treats for nearly a decade now, and continue to enjoy

the contest as it brings them together in the kitchen to make memories.

This winning team has mastered the recipe for success; family

members have received top honors multiple times, and have placed

almost every year. The Forrests have other reasons to be proud of their

culinary accomplishments. They have donated all their winnings, totaling

several hundred dollars, to Pediatrics at Marshfield Clinic Health System.

Truly, Maple Fall Fest has become a celebration of giving—we thank

our community members who give of their time and of themselves by

thinking of the joy it brings others.

WILDWOOD ZOO

Cougar Exhibit exterior | Jeff Scott

NEW WELCOME CENTER & EXPANDED COUGAR EXHIBIT BRINGS A CROWD

The Wildwood Zoo just keeps getting wilder, with new additions

sure to delight visitors and its animal residents. Marshfield is

made new once again with the new Cougar Exhibit and Welcome

Center at Wildwood Park & Zoo, which was opened to the

public on October 25, 2019. The natural habitat cougar exhibit

proudly bears the names of locals Floyd and Pat Hamus, who

made a generous donation to the project and helped make the

expansion possible.

The goal of the expansion was to connect people to the cats’

environment through educational experiences while providing

professional care for the animals. The 11-year old cougar siblings,

Star and Thunder, love this upgrade to their home which boasts

nearly ten times the size of their previous space.

Zookeeper Steve Burns explained at the October Ribbon Cutting

Ceremony, “The sandstone structures in the exhibit give the cats a

more naturalistic, arid environment mimicking the American West.

It was thoughtfully designed to encourage natural cougar behavior

and offer premier viewing opportunities for our patrons. This is a true

testament to the appreciation the community shares for Wildwood.

This zoo is truly a gem in Marshfield.”

WILDWOOD ZOO

The new large viewing windows from the Welcome Center into

the exhibit provide an up close look at the cougars’ handling area.

This gives visitors the opportunity to see the cougars interact with

the zookeeper behind the scenes and during feeding times.

A main part of Wildwood Zoo’s mission is to educate the public on

wildlife and its environment. Featured prominently in the Welcome

Center is a new, interactive, hands-on water table experience.

Kids can don a raincoat and manipulate the table to rain and learn

about the importance of water quality as it undergoes evaporation,

transpiration, precipitation, and condensation during its life cycle.

Familiar spots and local landmarks are also built into the table, like

the World’s Largest Round Barn and the baseball fields at the Steve

J. Miller Recreation area. A separate, interactive, electric display also

teaches kids about the scientific wonders of power.

The Welcome Center also features small animals such as box

turtles, chuckwalla lizards, snakes, and more exhibits. Visitors will

also be happy to find new ADA compliant restrooms for comfort

and convenience in the building.

The enthusiasm for this new development at Wildwood Zoo is

contagious. Mayor Bob McManus exclaimed at the Ribbon Cutting

Ceremony, “We’re so excited about this exhibit and what it does for

the City of Marshfield. This is literally a world-class zoo.” Be sure to

come visit Star and Thunder and their friends Munsey and Boda, our

rare Kodiak bears, during your next trip to the zoo!
