WINTER EXHIBITION 2019<br />
Artists can take inspiration from any environment. In our exciting winter exhibition, the urban<br />
sits alongside the rural in a rich display featuring six outstanding living artists.<br />
Reuben Colley finds beauty in the streets and shopping centres of Sutton Coldfield, and the<br />
subways of Birmingham. These paintings are almost empty of people, and have a timelessness<br />
about them. Mark Godwin captures the urban landscape by night, trees illuminated against the<br />
darkness by the artificial glare of street lamps.<br />
In paintings inspired by old holiday photographs and 18 th -century prints, Annette Pugh interprets<br />
beauty spots through the eyes of day trippers, lending these traditional scenes the heightened<br />
colour of vintage postcards. Kate Sherman’s landscapes are based on her own photographs, often<br />
taken from moving vehicles, giving them a transient quality.<br />
The tradition of still life dates back to the 17 th century. Cameron Galt gives the genre a modern<br />
twist in his stunning new painting. Roxana Halls’ work challenges society’s assumptions about<br />
the way women should behave. Her vibrant paintings provoke questions, and often laughter too.
