September 2019

The Chamber’s annual Sponsorship

Campaign is almost underway! The funds

received during the campaign allow us to

continue our current programs and events,

as well as plan for the future as we embark

on our reinvention of the Chamber in the

coming months.

When sales open on September 9,

Chamber staff will begin contacting you

to introduce you to changes we’re making

to some of our events and programs, and

to outline all the opportunities available

with our most popular existing programs.

This year is lucky number 13 for the

Chamber’s sponsorship campaign, and

we are grateful for all the support we

have received from local businesses as a

result. Before we held annual campaigns,

sponsorships were obtained throughout

the year on an as-needed basis. This

made it difficult for businesses to plan

financially, and it resulted in a small

sector of the membership receiving the

opportunity to sponsor our events and

programs.

Running a campaign in the same limited

window each year allows all members

to see a full menu of events, programs,

committees, initiatives, and opportunities

to sponsor, with a variety of price levels and

benefits to choose from. Whether it’s by

sponsoring an email banner ad, a table at our

Annual Banquet, or our Chamber Reinvention

Initiative, please consider supporting the

Chamber’s mission to foster a better business

environment throughout Johnson County. A

list of sponsorship opportunities can be found

at iowacityarea.com. Please contact Emily

Wenzel at emily@iowacityarea.com to learn

more about how you can help strengthen your

Chamber for the years ahead.

It’s finally time for us to have a ribbon cutting of

our own!

Join us in our new location on the lower level of

MERGE on Thursday, September 5. The event kicks

off at 4:00 p.m. with tours of our office and plenty

of refreshments. At 5:00, President & CEO Kim

Casko and 2019 Board Chair Shawn Meaney will

give remarks and cut the ribbon.

Hope to see you there!

he Greater Iowa City Area HBA launched its Young

Professionals Network (YPN) with a June 18 social at Tin Roost

in North Liberty. YPN is an initiative started earlier this year by the

National Association of Home Builders. The aim is to connect with,

mentor and enhance the careers and businesses for the next generation

of the homebuilding industry.

Besides those age 35 or younger, the gathering featured several seasoned

Iowa City Area HBA mentors. The Spaghetti Marshmallow

Challenge served as a fun ice breaker, with groups of four experiencing

real-world skills of teamwork and problem solving to build a standalone

tower as high as possible from 20 sticks of dry spaghetti, one yard

of string, one yard of masking tape and a marshmallow – which had

to top the creation. Winning with a structure 28 inches tall was Nolan

Navar from Nolan’s Lawn Care; Taylor Goetschius and Brogan Messer

of Kitchens By Design; and Riley Marvin of Alpha Landscapes.

As part of our Sponsorship

Campaign, we offer special

membership pricing to encourage

more businesses to join the Chamber.

If you become a member during the

campaign, we waive the $50 one-time

sign-up fee and give you the rest of

2019 for free!

James Robinson of McCreedy-Ruth Construction welcomes social

attendees and provides more information on the YPN effort.

James Robinson, organizer for our YPN, noted the

group is a perfect opportunity for those beginning

their careers to get involved with the HBA. “The

YPN is important because there is really no group or

council specifically targeting young or new members.

It will be an avenue to feel involved from the very

first meeting and a way to branch out through

ambassadors’ and mentors’ guidance,” he said. “Our

goals are to get involved in the community, mentor

high school and college students and further our

careers through the HBA.”

Thank you to food and beverage sponsors HBA Iowa,
