Do you believe?
icertainly do! I believe in the magic of holidays. There is
something very special about the last six weeks of every year.
We prepare to visit or host family from near or far, we enjoy
shopping for people we love, we become more aware of those
in need and give, and we are reminded of how lucky we are…
Yes – to me the holidays are magical. And during the holidays,
Delray is extra special. There is the 100ft Christmas Tree lighting with
Santa landing at Old School Square (12/5) that was named the best
tree in Florida by Travel and Leisure in 2016, the Annual Boat Parade
(12/13), the Comic-Con Holiday Parade (12/14), the Grand Menorah
Lighting at Old School Square (12/22), and a Family Friendly New
Year’s Eve (12/21) to name a few! For more details on these and more
visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com or call 561-243-7277.
You’ve come a long way Delray! In the 80s for holiday festivities
we had to drive north to Lantana or as far south as Fort Lauderdale.
Now, thanks to the amazing people in the Downtown Development
Authority and the Community Redevelopment Agency, Old School
Square, and the many volunteers that live in and love our City by the
Sea, we are proud to have our own.
Bill Branning, our December City Person has had a hand in
growing and developing Delray Beach into what it is today. He is
a 7th generation Floridian, tracing his family back to 1815 and
settling in Middleburg, Florida! You cannot go anywhere in Delray
without running into a project that Branning has built. He has served
as Chairman of the Board on both Old School Square, the Delray
Beach Chamber of Commerce, and on the board for the Community
Redevelopment Agency for ten years – amazing!
Special thanks to our readers and our loyal advertisers for another
wonderful year of sharing with you all about our city and our people.
Happy Holidays and Happy Healthy New Year!
Choose your
words carefully.
you live in’
Purlife Fitness
BY Giovanni rOSelli
My name is Giovanni Roselli. I have been in the
fitness industry for 14 years, and currently work
at Purlife Fitness Centers in Delray and Boca. Like
many Floridians, I am a recent transplant from New York.
Previously, I was a Tier 4 Coach, Group Fitness Instructor,
and Master Instructor for Equinox, having traveled nationally
teaching their education curriculum. I have also worked
for Nike as a Master Trainer and content consultant, most
notably having produced exclusive content for their NTC
Training app. In addition to my work at Purlife, I provide
continuing education throughout the country to personal
trainers and speak at corporate wellness events. At Purlife,
you will often see me training clients using my favorite
pieces of equipment: Kettlebells, TRX, and ViPR PRO. My
wife Stacey is the founder of The Reading Village, a private
tutoring company specializing in teaching reading to dyslexic
children. We have a wonderful two-and-a-half year old
daughter Juliet Rose, and we enjoy the strong culture and
community here in Delray and Pineapple Grove. My family
frequently visits Old School Square and we enjoy eating
at all the great restaurants around town! If I can be of any
assistance contact me at Giovanni.r@purlifefitness.com.
Delray Under $50
Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene,
it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or
restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach
offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back
restaurants, and events for the whole family or
nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do
in Delray Beach in December for $50 or less.
Yes, we are all entitled to life and liberty, freedom of expression,
and more, but let’s not forget about the basic human
right and need to eat. December is Human Rights Month and
while we’re all focused on parties and presents, let’s make sure to
take time out to support those who need it most. The Fourth Annual
Empty Bowls Delray Beach event is presented by The Palm Beach
County Food Bank and is back again looking for support. This grassroots
event raises money for hunger relief in Palm Beach County
and invites the public to “eat simple, so others can simply eat.” Old
School Bakery provides rustic breads and more than 30 local chefs
donate their signature soups, all served by local celebrities. Guests
share in a simple meal of bread, soup and water, and will receive a
unique bowl to take home as a powerful reminder of all the empty
bowls in the community. Local schools have also chosen to participate
and will be selling bowls that local students have made in an
extra effort to raise funds for the cause. Empty Bowls is held on Sunday,
December 8 from 11am to 2pm at the Old School Square Pavilion,
51 N. Swinton Ave. Tickets are $25 when purchased in advance,
or $30 at the gate the day of the event. Visit www.pbcfoodbank.org
or call (561) 670-2518 for more information.
It might sound like beer and rewards go together, but this is a
match made in hop heaven. December is Safe Toys and Gifts
Month and while the good people at Old School Square aren’t
raising money for toys for kids, they are raising money for free community
programming in Delray Beach, so bottoms up to support all
in. The Second Annual Winter Craft Beer Garden is held Saturday,
December 21 and you and every single person you know are invited
to get together and enjoy craft beer from tons of local and national
vendors. You’ll be hoppy to drink local seasonal favorites from Barrel
of Monks Brewing, Green Man Brewery, New Belgium Brewing,
Stone Brewing, M.I.A. Beer Company, and more, and there’s even
a full bar for those who aren’t into beer. The event is held around
the base of the 100-foot Christmas Tree so it’ll feel uber festive and
almost like a pre-Christmas party with your community. Enjoy the
party with $5 drink tickets or go really festive and opt for the $15
branded beer stein with the first pour included. There will also be a
Well, it’s the holidays again, folks. Time to spread the cheer,
be the cheer, and cheer up! If you’re not sure where to
start, the City of Delray Beach has you covered. Recipe
Greetings for the Holidays Week is December 1 through 7 and is
also the beginning of our local holiday festivities. Mark your calendar
for Thursday, December 5 for the 100-foot Christmas Tree
COPYRIGHTED
Lighting Ceremony, where you’re invited to start the holiday
season off in a grand way by celebrating the 26th Anniversary
of the Famous 100-foot Tree. The event is from 5 to 9pm
and you’ll be feeling very festive with about a few thousand
of your local community members who are also there to celebrate.
If you didn’t have enough of the holiday fix, then plan
to attend the 48th Annual Holiday Boat Parade on Friday, December
13 at 6:30pm along the Intracoastal, and the City’s A
Comic Con Holiday Parade on Saturday, December 14 starting
at 6pm along Atlantic Avenue. With so many ways to celebrate
the holidays, you’ll be feeling like Elf in no time. The Tree
Lighting is held at Old School Square, 51 N. Swinton Ave. Visit
www.downtowndelraybeach.com or call (561) 243-1077 for
complete holiday details.
Enjoy putting pen to paper (or fingers to keys), but don’t
know the next steps about what to do with your beautiful
manuscript? Well it’s about time you find out! Decemberber
is National Write a Business Plan Month and the
good people at the Creative Arts School at Old School Square
have done all the hard work for you, so all you need to do is
show up and pay attention. They are hosting a How to Publish
lecture and discussion where you’ll learn about what’s happening
in the publishing industry, understand the difference
between traditional publishing and self-publishing, and how
to keep informed. Instructor Barbara Cronie will dive into
the procedure about how to get published, how to write a
query letter, the importance (or not) of the proposal, needing
an editor and agent, and the importance of a platform. She
believes that the times are changing and it’s important to be
informed, so take advantage of this great class. Here’s to taking
your words and sharing them with (hopefully) the world!
The event is held Saturday, December 7 from 1 to 4pm and it’s
$40 to attend. Old School Square is located at 51 N. Swinton
Ave. Visit www.oldschoolsquare.org or call (561) 403-2954
for more information and to register.
In the land of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it’s important
to remember to appreciate less of the wants. Sure, deals
are great, but the holiday season is also about giving back,
even if that means to yourself. Giving Tuesday is December 3
and is also one of two dates The Life and Sounds of Simon &
Garfunkel will be playing at the Delray Beach Playhouse. So in
amidst all the shopping, wrapping and cooking, give yourself
the opportunity to sit back and relax. Simon and Garfunkel
quickly became the most popular folk-rock duo of the 1960s,
and this unique and memorable program traces the arc of
their success. You’ll hear many of their beloved songs, such
as Bridge over Troubled Water, The Sound of Silence, Mrs.
Robinson, The Boxer, and more, performed amid stimulating
commentary on their career as a duo and their personal lives.
While the performances are played by Joan Friedenberg and
Bill Bowen, who sing professionally as the PinkSlip Duo, the
audience is also encouraged to sing along. The play is held
Tuesday, December 3 and Wednesday, December 4 at 2 pm
both days. Tickets are only $25 per person and there’s limited
quantity so don’t miss this opportunity for a little me time.
The Delray Beach Playhouse is located at 950 N.W. Ninth St.
Witches Of Delray Reach Record Breaking Numbers
The 8th Annual Witches of Delray
is pleased to announce it
has reached a record-breaking
number of riders. On Saturday, October
26th, the Witches of Delray flew through
Downtown Delray Beach with 300 riders
and raising $16,000!
Witches from all over joined the annual
ride that has become a growing tradition
in Downtown Delray Beach. The
Witches started the 3-mile route east
down Atlantic Avenue to A1A and back
west down Atlantic Avenue where they
concluded at the Delray Beach Green
Market. Special thanks, for escorting and
keeping our Witches safe, to the Delray
Beach and Boynton Beach Police Departments,
and the Palm Beach County Sheriff
Department.
Witches of Delray chairwoman, and
Alpha Witch, Andie DeVoe couldn’t have
been more thrilled with this year’s turnout
stating “It has been such an honor to watch
this event grow so much over the last few
years. We couldn’t be more thankful for all
of the support and love that we receive.
Each year just gets better and better and
we can’t wait for next year!”
► The Aeronauts - In 1862, daredevil balloon pilot Amelia Wren
(Felicity Jones) teams up with pioneering meteorologist James Glaisher
(Eddie Redmayne) to advance human knowledge of the weather and fly
higher than anyone in history. While breaking records and advancing
scientific discovery, their voyage to the very edge of existence helps the
unlikely pair find their place in the world they have left far below them.
But they face physical and emotional challenges in the thin air, as the
ascent becomes a fight for survival.
► Playmobil: The Movie - When her younger brother disappears
into the colorful and animated world of Playmobil, Marla is forced to
abandon her organized and structured life to rescue him. Finding
herself on an incredible and unpredictable adventure within this new
world, Marla begins to see potential she never dreamed of.
December 13
► Black Christmas - Hawthorne College is quieting down for the
holidays. One by one, sorority girls on campus are being killed by an
unknown stalker. But the killer is about to discover that this generation’s
young women aren’t willing to become hapless victims as they
mount a fight to the finish. Starring Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon,
Lily Donoghue, Brittany O’Grady, Caleb Eberhardt, Simon Mead, and
Cary Elwes.
► Bombshell - A few brave women decide to take on Fox
News boss Roger Ailes and the toxic male culture he presided
over at the propaganda network. Based on the true story,
the actual real-world scandal, and how it all went down.
Bombshell stars Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Margot
Robbie, John Lithgow, Kate McKinnon, Connie Britton,
Mark Duplass, Rob Delaney, Malcolm McDowell, and
Allison Janney.
► Jumanji: The Next Level sort-of sequel to the original
Jumanji movie from 1995. This time, they get sent back
into the game, but the characters are switched - different
people end up with the same four avatars. But where
is everyone else? Nothing is as they expect inside.
The players must brave parts unknown, from
arid deserts to snowy mountains, in order to
escape the world’s most dangerous game.
► Richard Jewell - Eastwood tells another
distinctly American story about
how an innocent man was vilified by the
media. American security guard Richard
Jewell, played by the talented Paul
Walter Hauser, heroically saves thousands
of lives from an exploding bomb
at the 1996 Olympics, but is unjustly
vilified by journalists and the press
who falsely report that he was a terrorist.
The full cast includes Sam Rockwell,
Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm, Olivia Wilde, and
Ian Gomez.
Webber’s beloved smash musical “Cats” and the poems from “Old
Possum’s Book of Practical Cats,” by T.S. Eliot. Director Tom Hooper
Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams,
Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong’o, Warwick Davis, plus newcomers
Naomi Ackie, Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, and Dominic Monaghan.
► 1917 - At the height of the First World War, two young British
soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game
of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible
mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and
deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers-
-Blake’s own brother among them.
► Little Women explores the lives of four sisters in
1860s Massachusetts in the aftermath of the Civil
War. This new adaptation focuses more on the March
sisters’ young adult lives, particularly after Meg, Jo,
and Amy leave their family home. Little Women
is directed by American actress-turnedfilmmaker
Greta Gerwig, director of the
films Nights & Weekends and Lady Bird
previously. The screenplay is also written
by Greta Gerwig, adapted from Louisa
May Alcott’s classic novel of the same
name first published in 1868.
► Spies in Disguise - Super spy Lance
Sterling (Will Smith) and scientist
Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) are
almost exact opposites. Lance
is smooth, suave and debonair.
Walter is...not. But when events
take an unexpected turn, this
unlikely duo is forced to team up
for the ultimate mission that will
require an almost impossible
disguise - transforming Lance
into the brave, fierce, majestic...
pigeon. Walter and Lance
suddenly have to work as a team,
or the whole world is in peril.
Brewed Awakening
by Cleo Coyle
Released December 3rd
When coffeehouse manager Clare Cosi
awakens on a bench in Washington
Square Park, she has no idea she’s been
missing for the past week, or that her friends
and family have been frantic with worry.
Now that she’s back, everyone is overjoyed,
including a handsome NYPD detective who
claims to be her fiancé. But to Mike Quinn’s
crushing distress, Clare doesn’t remember
him, or much of anything about the last decade
of her life.
Clare’s missing memory is tied to a crime
she witnessed. An acquaintance of Clare’s
elegant employer—and fellow member of
an exclusive Gotham circle known as “The
Ladies Who Brunch”—invited Clare to her
posh hotel to sample gourmet wedding
cakes. The pair took a stroll after their indulgent
tasting and, according to security
camera footage, a masked figure snatched
the hotel heiress at gunpoint with Clare
looking on. Did the kidnapper take Clare,
too? The camera went dark, just like Clare’s
memory. Soon authorities grow suspicious.
Is Clare really a victim? Or merely acting
like one? Evidence is mounting that she set
the woman up.
To clear her name, Clare must find a way
to reclaim her memories and rescue the
heiress before this high-stakes crime ends
in tragedy. Otherwise, instead of walking
down the aisle, Clare may find herself
perp-walking to prison as an accomplice to
kidnapping and murder.
Arthritis and Chiropractic
Arthritis - we’ve all heard of it, and it affects some if not most
of us. Arthritis has many forms and conditions, but for the
purposes of this article we are talking about osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis or OA is defined as the degeneration of joint
cartilage and the underlying bone, most common from middle
age and onward in life. This can happen in any joint, but
here we will specifically address OA of the spine.
Quick anatomy lesson, we (humans) have 7 cervical, 12 thoracic,
and 5 lumbar vertebrae and in between each one of those vertebrae
is a disc. These discs have two parts. The inside is a gelatinous
material called the nucleus pulposus and the outside portion
of the disc is called the annulus fibrosis. The annular material is a
strong durable material that bonds to the top and bottom of the
vertebrae that it is in between. These discs act as the shock absorbers
of the spine. Just like in your car, these wear out after lots of
miles or improper use. Improper use can occur due to poor biomechanics,
poor posture, overuse, or even injury. The discs are a very
viscous material and need movement in order to get their nutrition
and hydration. If the spine is injured, or biomechanics are altered,
the discs are not getting their proper nutrients and hydration, they
dehydrate or degenerate. When this happens, you have degenerative
disc disease.
When the disc is degenerated and dehydrated, the body views that
as unstable and locks down the muscles around the joints, and protects
the spine by laying down more bone, creating osteoarthritis.
54 | December 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
There are other concerns in this process as well. During the degeneration
process, the likelihood of developing disc herniation is
increased as well as an increase in symptoms such as sciatica. How
can this be treated? First and foremost, MOVEMENT is the key to
life. Stretching, going to the gym, going on walks, getting out and experiencing
this beautiful country of ours is going to help keep those
joints lubricated. For the spine, getting adjusted will introduce motion
to the joints that are stuck in the protective mechanism we
talked about earlier. It will also help rehydrate the discs over time.
For disc herniation, non-surgical spinal decompression is the
most aggressive conservative treatment that can be done to help
with herniations and sciatica. Coupling spinal decompression
with Class IV laser therapy will bring more healing properties
into the joints.
If you suspect you have osteoarthritis don’t just sit around, get
up and MOVE!
ThermiSmooth
Delray Beachers prize immediate gratification. Now, the magic
mirror can reflect a face with tightened skin and reduced
wrinkles after a simple and comfortable sixty-minute procedure.
There are no painful injections, no burning lasers and no peeling
or scabbing a day later. A refreshed appearance can be
had without toxins, needles, cutting, fillers, or bruising. At
last we can alter nature without an incision!
ThermiSmooth is a revolutionary non-surgical procedure to
safely treat mild to moderate facial wrinkles with virtually no pain
and little, if any downtime. Using this advanced FDA approved radiowave
technology, the ThermiSmooth system precisely heats the
deep layers of the skin while completely sparing the epidermis (top
layer of the skin), leaving it undamaged. This creates deep results
without the downtime. The heat generated in the deeper skin levels
causes the collagen in the skin to contract and tighten. After treatment,
the skin begins to ramp up new collagen productions, which
improves firmness and reduces wrinkle depth. The result is an immediate,
naturally refreshed appearance.
Some tout this to be the greatest facial “happening” of all time. Results
are immediate and will last for about 48 hours. One can actually
plan ahead to look one’s smashing best when attending a wedding,
interviewing for a job, going on a first “date,” or just sauntering down
the “Ave”… Ultimately, it takes about a month for the collagen to finish
remodeling. Then voila! The maximum results are clearly visible.
ThermiSmooth does not require anesthesia or skin cooling. Patients
can expect to feel a deep warming sensation in the area being
treated. Because the skin is not numb, the patient can describe the
depth of the feeling to the doctor, and alert the doctor if the heat
grows uncomfortable, which helps to ensure the best possible results.
Patients can also return to home or work immediately.
ThermiSmooth can be used to treat the skin on the face, including
the eye area, neck, hands and virtually any area at all. This nifty
device does not take the place of a facelift nor proclaim to offer
comparable results; however, because a full facial treatment takes
only about an hour, ThermiSmooth fits easily into busy schedules. A
single, one-hour treatment provides noticeably firmer, tighter skin
– with results that can last up to six months. Busy and beautify can
now coexist. Believe ThermSmooth.
The Ultimate Fitness Reset?
It’s that time of year again where workouts get pushed
aside and holiday cookies get pushed in. Before you know
you start to feel like Frosty the Snowman, fluffy and round!
Soon enough you’ll be ready to return to a healthier lifestyle.
Before jumping back on your health and fitness routine, you
may want to consider adding something that will help getting
back on track quicker than expected. It’s called Cellular
Cleansing. Cleansing has a huge range of health benefits from
58 | november 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
weight loss to rebalancing hormones to cellular repair…some pretty
fancy stuff. The health benefits of cleansing are long! But this
article will explain the cleansing and fat burning benefits of cellular
cleansing. This cleanse helps increase your metabolism and rid
your body of built up toxins leaving you feeling amazing and ready
to tackle your 2020 health and fitness goals.
Many people hear the word “cleansing” and think it entails drinking
a kind of lemonade for 14 days, juicing lots of veggies or maybe
even “starvation.” None of this is accurate. Traditional “cleanses”
tend to strip or deplete the body leaving you feeling weak and lethargic
and the rebound is not pretty either. However, cleansing at
the cellular level helps your body release un-wanted toxins in a safe
and efficient manner. These toxins that have built up in your system
are most likely the culprits that can make you feel lethargic, bloated,
fat, sleepy, puffy, etc, making it much harder to see results…in and
out of the gym. By removing toxins that are brought on by bad eating
habits, pollution and environmental factors, your body will be much
more effective at metabolizing food and burning fat. It’s like giving
your body a total reset button. Your energy will increase, cravings
diminish and you will feel alive and vibrant! Who wouldn’t want to
feel amazing, especially after weeks of holiday shenanigans?!
This type of cleanse is not something you do once a year
and forget about, nor is it a short term quick fix. If it sounds
too good to be true, it probably is. Cellular cleansing is
something that I will do the rest of my life and almost
weekly as a matter of fact. The results have not only been
incredible for myself but for also my clients who chose to
incorporate this into their lifestyle!
If you’re looking for a way to give your body an awesome
reset and return to a healthy lifestyle after the holidays
- research Cellular Cleansing. You will be surprised of the health
benefits and may also rid you of the stigma of cleansing. Give it a
try, you won’t be disappointed, you have nothing to lose (except fat!)
and everything to gain!
Posh Properties
Expanding and Booming
in Real Estate Business
By Nicol Jenkins | photos by melissa korman
A former Playboy Bunny and California court appointed receiver,
Jerilyn Walter had just $900 in her pocket when she started in real
estate. Now she owns a thriving boutique real estate brokerage
firm in Delray Beach with three locations and more than 40
agents, that will reach over $100 million in sales volume in 2019,
and now the firm will be featured on a national television show.
You can’t miss their many real estate signs on homes for sale
in the area or at local community events. Posh Properties has
become a household name in the town of Delray Beach. Their
name is also expanding to other nearby cities with agents selling
homes throughout the South Florida area.
Posh Properties is a successful boutique real estate firm with
a dedicated team of professionals that have a strong pulse on the
area’s real estate market. The firm, founded by Broker Jerilyn Walter,
who lives and breathes real estate, wanted to create a firm that
specializes in hiring agents who understand that Real Estate is a
career. “I want agents that professionally represent themselves and
our brand, and strive to be well recognized and sought after professionals.
As their Broker, my main objective is to help elevate their
success and drive business to my well deserving agents.”
This strategy has proven to be very successful in helping build
the Posh brand, recruit talented agents, and solidify a strong professional
reputation. “Our agents know the business of real estate
and this helps Buyers find and purchase the right home, and Sellers
to quickly sell their homes at the right price,” says Jerilyn.
“The heart of our business is downtown Delray Beach and Boynton
Beach. However, we have agents who specialize in real estate
from Jupiter to Miami,” said Jerilyn. Posh Properties has expanded
to Jupiter Farms with their $3.9m 5-acre ranch with 8 stalls and
expansive estate listed by the team of Joan Finley and Kelsey Zapolsky.
“After 20 years of being in the business, and opening our doors
just 7.5 years ago, we are attracting agents who want to become
entrepreneurial realtors and not one of many within the large corporate
structures. They recognize being in a professional boutique
office can give them the Broker support and vision they need to
reach beyond their goals.”
Business keeps knocking on Jerilyn’s door because of the relationships
she has built with her clients. She takes the time to listen to her
clients’ needs and hosts a “New in Town” cocktail party for them each
year. She also uses her years of experience to guide her agents and
assist them in growing their own thriving real estate practice.
“So much business keeps coming to my door because of longterm
relationships and a strong referral basis. That’s what is allowing
Posh Properties to flourish, and attract other agents who are
recognizing our branding. Our signs are everywhere now! The addition
of the team of Steve and Lori Martel, has brought to our office
the luxury builder, Bella Homes, as well as a strong presence in the
Lake Ida neighborhood.
Jerilyn Walter along with Glenn Asher , “Ask The Title Guy” of Kensington/Vanguard Title, and Steve Petrucci of Bella Homes, will be featured on The American Dream television show
Posh Properties is also getting recognized nationally
as Jerilyn Walter will be a cast member
on the new TV show The American Dream on the
CW. “The show is not a real estate reality show. We
spend our day showcasing local neighborhoods,
communities, and introducing the Palm Beach
lifestyle. The American Dream is exactly that, and
I believe Florida is the American Dream- where
opportunity is still within reach.”
Jerilyn has created a team of expert local real
estate agents who are individual entrepreneurs.
“The team at Posh Properties supports the local
community and charities. The agents in the office talk to each other
and promote each other. They show up at open houses and focus on
building the brand, the momentum and exposing the properties we
have listed,” she said.
Jerilyn and her agents at Posh Properties can be found giving
back to the local communities. She currently serves on the Board
of Directors for Bound For College, Pineapple Grove Arts District,
Ambassador for Caring Hearts, Chairman’s Club Member of Delray
Chamber of Commerce, member of Lantana and Boynton Chamber
of Commerce, and a long time sponsor of the Chris Evert Pro-Celebrity
Classic. Her success and reputation has made her a sought after
authority in the industry and was recently a guest speaker at the
Ladies of Industry charity luncheon for breast cancer awareness.
“I started Posh Properties in an effort to
move away from the large corporate image of
just selling homes, and get back to the business
of “Real Estate.” I fought hard to create
a strong, well respected local brand, in Delray
Beach, Boynton Beach and Ocean Ridge, where
we also have offices. I have been able to accomplish
this by getting entrenched in our community.
It’s important to know what’s going on
in our communities on an organic level, a lot of
the other agencies tout international appeal but
they don’t have the insight about the “heartbeat”
of our local markets,” said Jerilyn.
The philosophy at Posh Properties regarding a small community
is; “when you are a vital part of your community, you will always
be successful.”
“We attract agents who have the same values with the community;
we are all on the same page,” said Jerilyn.
Posh Properties continues to grow with more agents and recent
expansion into more areas with new offices in Boynton Beach and
Ocean Ridge.
“We want our customers to feel a warm welcome and experience
the expertise of our hair colorists, stylists and makeup artists,” said
Jessica Lochiatto, owner of Gypsy Rose Salon.
Since opening the salon, the owner wanted her customers and
staff to feel right at home.
“Having worked in a lot of other high end salons in Boca Raton
for a long time, the one thing that was lacking was the camaraderie
for the hair stylists. Here at Gypsy Rose Salon, we invite everyone in
with a warm welcome. Everyone knows each other and we are like
family,” said Jessica.
Delray Beach community. Visit her website to see her talented
and get a gift with purchase for any makeup application. The salon
will also be offering facials by an esthetician and customers can get
their eyelashes done, or an updo for a holiday party.
Her salon specializes in color and new techniques such as balayage,
and they only use top of the line hair color lines such as Goldwell,
Redken, Schwarzkopf, and Oribe hair products.
The owner has over 20 years of experience in hair coloring. She
finds pride in staying current with the color trends.
Jessica knows all about the beauty and hair business. She grew
up watching her mom and uncle work in hair. She has worked in
many well-known high-end salons in Boca Raton, including The
Green Room, Salon Duda, Parthenon, and then decided to open her
own salon, with the best hair stylists and colorists in the industry.
“My main goal was to have a creative staff that gets along with everybody
and wants to keep learning. Every person who walks in the
door is always having a good time and we pride ourselves on that. Everyone
says ‘I love being here with the staff; it’s not intimidating. Everyone
is really friendly and gets along with each other,’” said Jessica.
“We are a high-end salon but we are a small boutique salon and
we do not have an uptight vibe. We offer the best products and the
best customer service for our clients. Some salons have forgotten
that along the way and we want to bring that back. Everyone
that walks in is treated like a friend,” said Jessica.
The salon owner continues to educate her stylists and colorists
on the latest in products and hair trends.
“I like to educate my stylists and reward them with getting
classes. I want them to be the best at what they do, and the
only way to be the best is to constantly educate yourself on
this industry,” she said.
Gypsy Rose Salon has received many 5 star reviews from
customers.
“A beautiful and unique salon that provides excellent service.
Jessica is knowledgeable, efficient and fun! I had a wonderful
experience from start to finish and couldn’t be more
happy with my hair!” said a happy customer.
“Jessica, the owner of Gypsy Rose Salon is an amazing and
talented colorist who has been in the business a long time. Her
experience shows. I have been going to her for about a year
now and my hair color is always on point. I have seen her do
amazing things with other people too. The salon is classy and
she uses amazing, upgraded hair products like Oribe. No cutting
corners with Jessica. The salon also has complimentary
coffee and tea and a phone charging station. Jessica is professional
and on time. Do not think twice about going!” stated
Where Is Your Resolve?
BY Giovanni Roselli | photos by melissa korman
It’s that time of year again. New Year, New You.
Probably tried that one already though, didn’t you?
The staff at Purlife will welcome you and support your goals
The most common New Year resolutions are losing weight, exercising
more, quitting smoking, and saving money. Sound
familiar? Research has shown that about half of all adults
make New Year’s resolutions, however less than 10% manage to
keep them for more than a few months.
So how are things going to be different this time around? Here’s
how: don’t make a resolution this year – take action and resolve!
Resolutions are great but without action you’re making a wish.
We at Purlife Fitness Centers are here to make this happen!
Do It For You
There’s a good chance you will fall into the same traps this year
that you fell into in the past.
Take action: get a thorough fitness assessment at Purlife Fitness
Center with one of our world-class trainers. Here, you will have
a conversation about your goals, struggles, likes, and concerns.
70 | December 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
In addition to this discussion, your trainer will use the following
to help you take action and guide you to success:
• InBody Analyzer which measures bodyfat percentage, muscle
mass, segmental lean development, and water levels
• Fit 3D Body Scanner which takes circumference measurements,
gives a postural analysis, and analyzes the balance between
both sides of the body
• Functional Movement Screen, which assesses imbalances and
asymmetries in the body that could potentially lead to injury
• Precision Nutrition certified coaching that helps create nutritional
habits that will actually stick this time around
With this information, coupled with the trainer’s expertise in
both program design and corrective exercise, you will be able to
not only take action, but also be held accountable every step of the
way. Your trainer can tailor a gameplan for both exercise and nutrition
that makes sense, is realistic, and can be modified along the
way if need be.
Metabolism
The spacious cardio area at Purlife Boca
People often ask: Do I have a good metabolism? How do I increase
my metabolism? Is metabolism genetic-related?
Here are some facts:
• One pound of muscle burns six calories per pound per day.
• One pound of fat burns two calories per pound per day.
That four-calorie difference may not sound like much, but for
most people, that’s the difference between living lean and living
overweight.
To further complicate things, after the age of 20, the average person
loses one-half to seven-tenths of a pound of muscle per year.
That’s 5 to 7 pounds a decade.
As women approach menopause, the rate at which they lose
muscle doubles, which is why so many women begin to gain weight
right around that time of life.
After the age of 70, the average person loses 3 pounds of muscle
per year!
Why is this so important? When you lose muscle, your metabolism
slows down.
We should all strive to increase or at least maintain our metabolism.
The formula to accomplish this is simple: Clean eating plus
strength training equals a healthy metabolism.
Specifically, doing interval-based strength training maintains
and potentially increases lean muscle tissue, making you leaner,
and enhances EPOC (Exercise Post Oxygen Consumption) so your
body will continue burning calories even after exercising. Our In-
Body Analyzer will able to quantify this data to see the progress.
Purlife Boca Trainer Dallas Moffit focuses on form
Take action: Jump into one of our group fitness classes at Purlife
Fitness Centers that provide you with programming that will blend
flexibility, strength training, and aerobic conditioning, to keep your
metabolism revving! Additionally, feel the energy from working out
in a group with a motivated instructor cheering you on!
Quality Over Quantity
Many believe that counting calories is the answer to improved
health and fitness. However, to a general fitness enthusiast, that
may not necessarily be the answer, nor realistic, and here’s why:
counting calories doesn’t tell you about food quality.
Calorie math won’t tell you whether the food you are eating
is adding value to your body. You can get 2,000 calories from
healthy, nutrient-rich meals spread over a day…or you can get it
from a large Frappuccino and a couple of pastries. (Which one do
you think is a better choice?) A high-quality machine needs highquality
fuel. If you’re working on building your body or a strong
performance, put premium gas in the tank.
Take action: sit down with our Purlife Fitness Center management
team and training staff. Have an honest discussion and
come to an agreement on which habits would be the most beneficial
to improving your health. Focus on building habits instead of
jumping from one diet to the next. Then, begin to slowly implement
these habits into a daily, weekly, and monthly routine. Some
simple examples could simply be drinking more water or adding
more vegetables to your daily intake. Pick the lowest hanging
fruit (pun intended) and decide on a realistic habit that you
can be successful with. And after your workout you can visit our
restaurant PurGreens where we serve fit, fast, fresh nutritionally
rich food. It couldn’t be any easier or convenient!
Will This Be THE Year? Or Just Another Year?
Purlife Fitness Centers truly has you covered every step of the
way. Our training staff, management team, and group instructors
will hold you accountable and motivate you to a new year AND
new you. Don’t let this be another year of broken resolutions and
disappointments. Don’t make a resolution this year – take action
and RESOLVE!
Siperstein Dermatology GROUP
Another Top Physician Joins
Siperstein Dermatology Group
Siperstein Dermatology Group continues to
expand this year with the addition of Facial
Plastic Surgeon, Dr Lisa D. Grunebaum.
72 | December 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Dr Grunebaum comes to the group with more than a decade
of experience at the University of Miami where she
served as the Division Chief of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive
Surgery. Dr Grunebaum says she decided to join the
Siperstein group after witnessing the complete dedication to
safety and patient care by everyone in the practice from front
desk personnel to physicians. In addition, she says “Siperstein
Dermatology group gave me the platform to expand all the elements
of facial plastic surgery that I love including skin cancer
reconstruction (MOHS reconstruction), cosmetic injectables,
cosmetic surgery and cosmetic clinical trials.”
Facial plastic surgeons are typically double board certified in
Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery (ENT) and Facial Plastic
Surgery. One important distinction is the fact that a significant
percentage of ENT residency training alone, which lasts 5
years, is also dedicated to facial plastic and reconstructive surgery
and most ENT surgeons are already well versed in the tenets
of facial plastic surgery. Therefore, the one year fellowship
training in the area is even more specialized. Dr Grunebaum
completed her fellowship at the University of Miami in 2007
and was hired immediately on faculty where she remains in
a teaching position.
Dr Grunebaum focuses her cosmetic surgery practice
on facelifts and rhinoplasty. She feels that patients
may be averse to the term “facelift” and seek a “neck
lift” but she explains “neck lift” is in some ways a misnomer.
“Realistically”, she says, “there is actually
no such thing as a “necklift” which doesn’t require
surgery above the neck to hide scars and
take a mature face to a more youthful contour!”
In addition, when it comes to rhinoplasty, she is
highly focused on BOTH form AND function. “I
don’t make pretty noses that don’t breathe well.”
she states. She goes on to clarify “a large portion of
my rhinoplasty practice has focused on taking care of
and treating patients who have experienced the negative
phenomenon of an operated nose that has poor breathing function.
I am specifically trained to help avoid this problem.”
COPYRIGHTED
Siperstein Dermatology Group Boynton Beach office
The remainder of Dr Grunebaum’s surgical work is in the area
of complex head and neck cancer reconstruction and skin cancer
reconstruction. “While cancer is a devastating diagnosis for many
of my patients, it is an honor to be trusted to help my patients
through this difficult journey and to do my best to restore all areas
of the face. The tenets of cosmetic facial surgery make me better
at being a reconstructive surgeon and vice versa. Having the
facility and tools to perform both reparative surgery and surgery
which enhances natural beauty makes me more versatile.”
Dr Grunebaum is an expert in minimally invasive cosmetic injectables
such as Botox® and dermal fillers. She is a sought after
national educator and speaker on the topic and travels both
nationally and internationally to lecture to other doctors. She
has given more than 50 podium talks on all aspects of minimally
invasive treatments.
“Many patients feel that surgery is the ultimate treatment for all
facial beauty and aging related issues.” Dr Grunebaum describes
that the truth is injectables are not a surgical replacement and
the reverse is also true. Both surgery and minimally invasive
treatments provide different tools for different problems. She describes
that the face has 3 basic layers. The skin is the superficial
layer, there is a middle layer of connective tissues and muscles
and finally a deep bony layer. Specialized, physician directed,
medical grade, backed by science skin care which is offered at
Boca Raton Office Relocating to Brand New State-of-the-Art
Building on Federal and Glades the Spring of 2020
Siperstein Dermatology Group is the gold standard for layer 1.
“Creating individualized skin care regimens is one of my favorite
ways to help patients!” she says. Lasers can also greatly help the
superficial skin layer by treating wrinkles and pigment changes
such as brown spots. Fillers such as Restylane® and Juvederm®
are special for creating beautiful contours and recreating “youthful”
contours. Botox® and similar injections such as Dysport® or
Jeuveau® help wrinkles by softening muscle movement. None of
these areas or problems are treated with surgery alone.
Dr Grunebaum feels that one main area which sets her apart
from other top docs in her field is her research focus. She has
extensive experience in cosmetic clinical trials which aim to provide
data on safety and efficacy of new products, such as dermal
fillers, coming to the US market. “As the top experts in the field,
companies entrust the doctors at Siperstein Dermatology Group
to provide careful and potentially FDA mandated information
about safe and effective future treatments. We are able to translate
that knowledge into the most educated and specialized care
for our discerning cosmetic patients.”
A Celebration of Friendship,
Cigars and Longevity
BY diane feen | photos by melissa korman
Celebrating birthdays is an American tradition.
Whether a person or a business, each year is an
auspicious time to mark ones’ time in existence.
At Puro’s Cigar Shop this philosophy has become part of their
legacy. Each year the Puro’s family descends onto the parking
lot outside their shop in Atlantic Plaza and celebrates
life, love and the art of smoking great cigars.
This year was no different.
The Puro’s family is not just made up of relatives, but includes
loyal customers, cigar representatives and owners Lisbeth, Eduardo,
and Jesus. This year was even more auspicious because Jesus’s
wife Carolina brought their newborn baby to round out the ageless
quality of earthly enjoyment.
“I love it here. It’s so casual and there is intelligent conversation
between people from different walks of life and different countries.
It’s very mentally stimulating,” said Dave Horowitz, who has been
coming to Puro’s for eight years.
Horowitz isn’t the only person who relishes their time at Puro’s –
whether the annual fete or weekly pilgrimages. Bernie Naekel goes
almost every day to smoke a cigar and experience the camaraderie
and comfort of Puro’s. “The owners are such nice people and everyone
here is so down-to-earth.”
Norm and Elaine Hecht subscribe to the same brand of familiarity
and friendship at Puro’s. “The camaraderie of the owners – regardless
of age or income – is so sweet. There is no arrogance here,”
said Norm.
You could say the Puro’s devotees are like one big happy family.
Most everyone agrees if there is a solution to world peace it would
most likely be found at Puro’s. The Monday after the Anniversary
party, the patio of this wood paneled cigar shop was filled with cigar
lovers reminiscing about the party and the annual raffle that
gets everyone excited.
“All the regulars come to smoke cigars and hang out on the patio
and talk about the party each year. It’s a tradition as rich and diverse
as the party itself,” said Lisbeth, the matriarch of the Garcia
family.
Her husband Eduardo is the corner to the golden box that fills the
space with good vibes and cigar precision. “I often ask what cigar
I should smoke, and the owners of Puro’s always come up with a
great recommendation,” said Claudia Marquez, who attended the
party with her boyfriend Chris Bergman.
Chris has been coming to Puro’s for ten years. He was walking
by one day and noticed the good vibrations and conversation by
happenstance. “I did not know anyone (or anything about cigars)
when I first came here, but very quickly I became part of their family.
They actually care.”
Tony Visone, a restauranteur and Puro’s fan, stood up and
watched all the action from an aerial view. His smile lit up the space
he inhabited, and he commented on the congenial crowd and ethereal
beauty of the Garcia family.
While the conversation and live music set the stage for celebration
the Garcia family brought out (and served) chicken, sausage,
and skirt steak kabobs, potato salad and empanadas. There was an
open bar and a raffle where guests won items like a golf bag, humidor,
cutter, cigar packages, T-shirts and other goodies.
In its 10th year in business Puro’s shows no signs of slowing
down. Their customers love the ambience, the loyalty and the premium
cigars that abound from all sides.
Those names include a full selection of Padron, Arturo Fuente,
Ashton, The Griffin’s, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Rocky Patel, My
Father Cigars, Gurkha, Tatuaje, Illusione, Perdomo, Avo and more.
Puro’s also sells pipe tobacco, as well as Italian pipes, lighters, humidors
and cigar accessories.
They also keep their hand on the pulse of cigar trends and new
cigar brands. Recently they added three new brands for their discerning
cigar loving customers. The first is 7-20-4, which is a premium
boutique cigar handcrafted in small batches. Made in Honduras,
the taste ranges from medium to full-bodied and delivers rich
and complex flavors.
Another new cigar brand they sell is HVC. This cigar is inspired
by the Cuban cigar tradition and is blended with fine fillers and
binders from Nicaragua.
Also new are Le Careme premium cigars (from Crowned Heads)
with a mellow to medium flavor. La Careme has been described as
mouthwatering notes of chocolate, sweet spice, toffee and caramel.
Puros also has a great selection of premium cigars such as the Padron
1926 Series, Padron 1964 Anniversary Series and the Padron
Damaso Cigars. They also have Arturo Fuente Anejo, Fuente Opus
X, Oliva Serie V Melanio and others.
One of the trademarks of Puro’s is their patio where guests sit
EDUARDO, LISBETH, JESUS, the three owners
hosted the party and make this business work
around (days and evenings) and solve world problems, talk about
sports, their lives and loves. When there are sporting events Eduardo
often brings out a large TV screen and everyone will watch the
game together. Friendships have been cemented and camaraderie
fills the cracks and crevices of mundane civility.
Puro’s is a place where great cigars abound, friendship is nurtured
and life becomes just a little sweeter.
Guitar Hospital Will Care And
Repair Your Stringed Babies!
BY Lisa Marie
Walking the streets of Delray
Beach, you won’t find another
business quite like that
owned by Michael Dacher.
Located in the heart of Delray Beach, is the fabulously named
Guitar Hospital. You will be greeted by April, the resident
Dachshund and then Michael who prides himself on offering
you the best service available locally where he cares and repairs
your stringed babies!
To give you a little bit of background on Michael, he started
back in 1972 at The Guitar Shop on Griffin Road and I-95 in Dania.
It was a retail and repair shop and the first small shop to carry the
Ibanez guitars.
From 1972 to 1980, Michael tenured with master luthier G.L.
Stiles in Hialeah, FL and Gibson’s warranty service station under
Dell Staton in West Hollywood, FL. During those years Dell Staton
took him in as a student, apprentice, and treated him like a son, and
sent him to sabbatical at the original Gibson Kalamazoo Factory.
“It was good times and noodle salad in those yesteryears” Michael
recalls. As Michael progressed in his apprenticeship, Dell Staton got
him into BJC to get an A.A. in Music and then on to University of
Miami School of Music Summer Program. For a brief time, he was at
Delray Music at I-95 and Linton but when they were contacted by
Guitar Center and offered an exclusive kiosk within their store, they
closed the Delray location. After six successful years they are back
in Delray Beach at a new location.
The new shop is small, intimate and on-hand purely to accommodate
the needs and desires of guitar owners, players, collectors,
hobbyists and professionals - concentrating exclusively on guitar
repair, upgrades and restoration of damaged guitars.
From re-strings to re-frets, and pickup replacement to body and
neck repairs, they have the tools, knowledge and skills to get your
guitar playing back to the best possible playing condition. Certified
warranty work is available for Gibson, Epiphone, Taylor Guitars,
Ovation, Michael Kelly, Dean, and B.C. Rich.
Finding Sanity
A Birthright
I’ve mounted a small framed plaque on my office wall. It says:
“Peace. It is not the absence of noise, trouble or hard work. It is to be in
the midst of those things, and still be calm in your heart.” An anonymous
saying likely created by someone familiar with the practice of
prayer or meditation...creating moments of stillness, during which it
is possible to find the strength and sanity we need to carry on. For
our children. For our tribe. For ourselves. For the planet.
Who’s Talking?
Dan Harris, commentator, in his great little book “10% Happier”
talks about meditation this way: “...lying in bed at night, I realized
that the voice in my head—the running commentary that had dominated
my field of consciousness since I could remember—was kind of
an asshole.” Noted by Buddha thousands of years ago, our jumpy,
impatient thoughts can drive us crazy, especially under stress.
Harris details his experience of observing those thoughts with an
intent to be free of them. He realized that often our thoughts are
in the future or the past, rarely leaving room for experiencing the
present moment. Steeped in fear, worry and regret, we get caught
up and forget we can set them aside. Easier said than done.
It Takes a Practice
I learned mediation in college. An antidote, I think, to my roaming
ADHD mind. Thinking of so many things randomly made me fidgety
and impatient and difficult to concentrate. It was hard on relationships
because it made it hard to pay full attention to anyone. My impulsive
thoughts and scattered nature led to depression and excessive
drinking more often than I was comfortable admitting.
Competitive college swimming was a great experience of being
good at something I loved and at the same time soothing. The pool
became another world of “present-sensory” delight. I learned yoga
and stretching to balance the stress of twice-per-day workouts. I
dabbled in meditation, calming my mind and controlling my body.
I got faster in the pool. I walked more peacefully through my life.
Long Lasting
I have long relied on this “meditation” skill to stay centered, to
accept so much I can’t change and to be happier than without it. I
dropped the formality. My teachers called it “just sitting.” No spiritual
trappings, no cosmology. Not even Buddhism. Just sit. How?
How to
Give yourself privacy 5 minutes daily for the next few days. Do
this and notice the changes...
1. Set your timer. Make the alarm soft.
2. Sit comfortably. Get a firm cushion.
3. Close your eyes...or let your gaze become soft into the distance.
4. Don’t control the breath; simply breathe naturally.
5. Focus on the breath and the movement of your belly with each.
6. Be patient with distraction. This isn’t failure. It’s practice. Just
bring your thoughts back to your breathing and relax.
There are a number of good apps that can help like Calm, Insight
Timer and Headspace.
If you’d like to be stronger, less anxious and more in charge of
your life, perhaps we can help. John Davis, LMHC is a Licensed
Building Our Future
If Bill Branning were an antibiotic there would be too much healthy stuff
to fit into one capsule. He is overflowing with knowledge of Delray’s
intricate infrastructure, his peers and the importance of giving back.
Branning has been invaluable to the essence and establishments
that stand beside him. To those who know him – in
both his business and personal life – he is a consummate
builder with a big heart and broad smile who hasn’t stopped
building, both in around Delray Beach since the 80s.
To the matriarch of Old School Square, Frances Bourque, he is
the brightest young man she’s had the pleasure of spending the
last 40 years with to make Delray dreams come true.
Those dreams have been in the Branning family for years. According
to Branning lore, his family came to Florida in 1815. They settled
in Middleburg, Florida and built a church that still stands today.
His father Charley was a mechanical engineer, his uncle was an
electrical engineer and Bill went to University of Florida with a plan
to major in mechanical engineering. But he quickly realized that his
passion was better suited for a degree in Building Construction.
There are a lot of people in Delray who are grateful Branning
followed the building construction path. “I don’t think I’ve seen
anyone work harder than Bill to make Delray a better place. His
work at Old School Square, the Delray Chamber, the CRA and on
city boards has been invaluable,” said former mayor Jeff Perlman.
Branning is also legendary for his expertise in construction,
project management and attention to detail. According to former
CRA Executive Director Diane Colonna, Branning’s expertise in
construction and budgeting were invaluable to them as they tackled
ambitious programs and infrastructure projects.
“He helped us avoid pitfalls in project bidding and management
and helped to ensure that the agency got the best product for its
money. He did all of this on a volunteer basis, spending hours reviewing
specifications and budgets. The CRA and the City benefited
greatly from Bill’s contributions.”
It makes sense that Branning would have a stake in the land that
sits beneath his feet. He is a 7th generation Floridian who grew
up in North Palm Beach and Miami. His grandfather Percy was a
boat captain born on Datura street in West Palm and his greatgrandfather
was a banker on Clematis Street.
Bill is revered for his expertise in the building business and
is President of BSA Construction Company situated in a historic
house in downtown Delray. He was involved in the original renovation
of the Sundy House, the historical restoration of the Cornell
Theatre, the relocation of the Historical Society offices and other
building projects that define Delray Beach.
He has also been a fixture in boards and organizations around
Delray. He spent 10 years as a board member of the
Delray Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), was Chairman
of the Board of Old School Square (for four years) and is the outgoing
Chairman of the Board of the Delray Chamber of Commerce.
His life has been a kaleidoscope of projects sprinkled all over
the city and boards that oversee its excellence. Branning was on
the SPRAB Board, Historical Preservation Board, Parking Management
Advisory Board, Historical Society Board and Chair of the
Associated General Contractors of America WPB chapter.
Though he has dedicated endless hours to volunteering on
boards and committees in Delray, he sees its inherent benefit.
“Volunteer members of the community create the fabric of who we
are as a city. It’s important to be a part of the process of creating
the vision and helping achieve goals that move Delray forward.”
Branning is a man of his word. “Bill is dedicated and loyal to
his community, his friends and family. He inspires and encourages
everyone - but when he raises his shoulders, opens up his
arms and puts on his captivating smile, you know you have been
‘BRANNING-ed,’” said Bourque, the founder of Old School Square.
Part of the Branning allure is his positive outlook and adventurous
nature. When not at a committee meeting or construction site
he can be found wandering the globe. His passion is travel and he
gleefully describes his recent trips outside the confines of his immediate
homestead.
When asked about his favorite places to travel he quickly replies:
“I have a lot of favorite places, but I really love adventuring
and discovering new places.”
Those places this year include the New Orleans Jazz Festival,
Puerto Rico and the California wine country. It is often said that
a solid life is made up of work and play, and Branning seems to
embody this philosophy. His generous spirit and intelligence are
like frames to the picture that fills it.
His friend Roger DeCapito has always known that about Branning.
“Bill is an amazing businessman and friend. He finds time to
volunteer at Old School Square, the Chamber, and boards around
town, yet still finds time for friends and customers. He is a great
contractor with a big heart.”
When it comes to the Chamber Branning is leaving the helm
with great confidence in its future. “I’m excited about our change
in leadership. Since we brought Stephanie Immelman aboard as
CEO, the Chamber’s value to its members has improved greatly.
Programs have been reworked, marketing and messaging has
been refocused and we are serving our membership more effectively
than ever.”
Seeing positive growth is paramount in Branning’s life. But others
see the foundation of its pouring. “Bill is honest - and this honesty
shared with love and encouragement makes you become the
best you can be,” adds Bourque.
Seafood Al Cartoccio
‘Al cartoccio’ is the Italian way of saying ‘cooked in a bag.’ In this recipe
we will cook the salmon and seafood in a foil pouch. This is one of the best
ways to cook fish. Cooking “al cartoccio” is quick with an easy clean up.
ingredients (serves 4)
4 - 4oz Salmon fillets
1lb Shrimp
12 Calms
12 Mussels
12 Cloves of garlic, sliced
1tsp Salt
1tsp Oregano
1 Pinch red pepper flakes
4 Tomatoes, diced
1oz Extra virgin olive oil
1cup White wine
1cup Fish broth
1cup Marinara sauce
12 Basil leaves julienned
Juice of 1/2 lemon
directions
Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Using a large sheet of aluminum foil, line a baking dish.
Place all fish in the center and brush with olive oil.
Combine remaining ingredients and pour over fish.
Fold the foil to form a pocket and hold in all liquid.
Bake in oven 7 minutes, or longer for a well done fish.
Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes.
Open pouch carefully to avoid steam.
Serve with crusty bread and pasta al dente.
How Do I Honor My Pet
with Optimal Health?
When looking at the history of our canine family members,
evidence shows that they’ve existed for over 20,000
years. Our feline family members adopted us 10-12,000
years ago. Yes, our pets have been with us for a long time. In our
never-ending quest for optimal health for our furry companions,
we needed to research their origin, where they lived and what their
natural foods and diet was like before domestication.
We realize that one’s health comes from everything that enters
the body, whether it is nutrition, water, air and the plethora of manmade
chemicals including preservatives, food additives, cleaning
products, extracts, medicine, vaccines, lawn products, insecticides,
and so much more. We don’t have control over the air and have
limited control on our water supply, however we can control what
we use in our homes, medications and food.
Our focus in this article is to guide on how to ensure optimal
health for your pets. Besides limiting exposure to toxic, harmful
chemicals and substances, the healthiest regiment is to provide the
cleanest, species appropriate foods available.
Our pets entered mankind in a period that is referred to as the
Paleolithic era, which dates from approximately 2.5 million to up
until 10,000 years ago. Our pets, from their initial contact with
humans and adapting to us in modern times, have had to undergo
many changes including exposure to toxic, harmful, and processed
foods. During the Paleolithic period, humans ate lean meats, fish,
fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds obtained by hunting and gathering.
Pets’ diets were the same.
What was the actual diet of our pets’ ancestral Paleolithic era? As
carnivores, it would be animal-based foods. Cats are obligate carnivores.
That means they need only animal-based foods. Canines
are opportunistic carnivores. That means more scavenging. They
will eat outside the animal-based diet only to balance their needs.
Today’s modern diets for our pets contain ingredients that are
mostly grains, legumes, and large amounts of processed ingredients
which are not even close to their ancestral Paleolithic foods.
They are complemented with synthetic, foreign-made nutrient
additives that are not even available to the body through the natural
digestive process. Is it any surprise that our modern pet family
has many more health issues than their wild, natural cousins? Statistics
show that dogs are the number one cancer and toxic animal
on earth. There is a reason and a solution.
We feel that our carnivore pets deserve to be fed biological and
species appropriate foods that are part of their ancestry. Our values
need to respect the natural order of their biological needs. We
understand that meat diets can be more costly than filler-based
diets. Starting with a natural basic food program can prevent unnecessary
health issues. Going back to what would be called a
Paleo Diet, we advise research, evaluate all the life changing improvements
that your pet experiences, and then decide.
Sunshine
A NO-KILL animal shelter.
Open Tues - Sun
11 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
I came into the safety of TriCounty with extremely
matted fur, mammary tumors, and dental issues
and I’m also blind. But none of that matters
now as I’ve been nursed into a happy girl. I’m
housebroken, crate trained, not a barker, and
good with cats and other dogs as well as gentle
older children. What I need now is a loving family.
Monkey here, nice to meet you! I’m an adorable
little dapper boy in need of a loving home. I’m
an 8 year-old Chihuahua mix and I’m a Good
Boy! Housebroken, happy to be with other dogs,
and an affectionate lap boy, I’m ready for my
forever peeps to adopt me. Come fall in love
with me today!
Need some sunshine in your life? I’m here to
help! I’m a sunny 4 month old sweetheart. A
terrier mix, I was thankfully rescued from an
overcrowded local shelter. Now I’m waiting here
in the loving care of TriCounty Animal Rescue for
you to find me! Hurry, I need hugs!
All animals are up-to-date
on vaccinations and
heartworm tested.
