PROMOTION
A gentle
DENTAL
approach
Dr Jaycee Combrinck and Dr Lynette
Jordaan have been working together
at their dental practice in Mediclinic
Bloemfontein for 25 years. A lot of us
will remember visiting their practice as
kids, and now taking our own kids to
see them for a friendly consultation and
expert care. Dr Pieter Kasselman joined
their team a decade ago, and today
they are welcoming dentist, Dr Carmen
Thöle, and oral hygienist, Ingrid Manser,
to the practice. Dr Carmen specialises
in aesthetical dental care, and loves
working with children.
“I would describe myself as a person
bursting with a zest for life and a
passion for many things such as my
friends, family, adventure, travelling,
doing good in the world and most
importantly, bringing healthy and
happy smiles to each and every patient
I have the pleasure and honour of
treating,” says Carmen.
Her goal is to debunk the stigma of
people being afraid of the dentist.
“I really want to change our bad
reputation by treating each and every
patient with empathy, gentleness and
to make them feel as comfortable as
possible. As a young woman dentist, I
have sympathy with patients who are
scared of their dental visit, and I strive
to make it something to remember - for
the RIGHT reasons!”
Carmen grew up in Dundee, KwaZulu-
Natal, and had the privilege of
becoming a Rotary Exchange Student
in Germany for a year. Back in SA, she
studied dentistry at the University of
Pretoria.
During her two years in private practice
in Bloemfontein, Carmen has attended
additional courses on implantology,
aesthetic dentistry (Botox and fillers)
and laser dentistry. She is planning
on doing a post-graduate diploma in
endodontics next year.
“For me, dentistry is about improving
a person’s quality of life, general health
and state of mind. Restoring someone’s
smile with ‘Hollywood pearly whites’,
treating a small child with toothache or
helping to restore function by providing
someone with new false teeth are all
very different, but just as important to
ensure people’s well-being.”
Dental Hygienist Ingrid Manser has
been master of her craft for a whopping
35 years, and is excited to start her
journey at Dental @ Mediclinic. Her
years of experience in training within
schools, clinics and official institutions
contributes to her love for her job
and patients. “For me, starting a new
career with this practice, means
that I can live out my passion in an
environment where loyalty, knowledge,
new technology and caring are main
priorities. What a blessing!“ Ingrid
has a passion for patients who are
In with the new, while keeping the
old! A winning combination of familiar
faces and brand new talent awaits at
Dental @ Mediclinic Bloemfontein.
undergoing chemotherapy or radiation
and loves supporting their oral
wellbeing during this trying time.
At Dental @ Mediclinic Bloemfontein,
the patients are treated with stateof-the
art dentistry. They are offered
general dentistry, aesthetic dentistry
with chair-side, same-day crown milling
and placement, teeth whitening,
paediatric and geriatric dentistry, as well
as implantology and orthodontics.
Carmen is extending her consultation
hours until 7pm on Mondays and
Thursdays to offer patients the
opportunity for a dental visit if they
cannot make it during office hours.
Since September is Oral Health month,
Dental @ Mediclinic Bloemfontein
is hosting an Oral Health Week from
the 16th to the 20th of September,
providing free oral screenings to
patients. New patients are welcome.
Half a dozen thrilling reads for September
‘It was a good day to be free of prison.’ So begins David Baldacci’s One Good
Deed ... his latest release which, as always, keeps readers’ adrenalin running
high. When Aloysius Archer gets out of prison, he heads for Poca City, with just
the clothes he’s wearing and an appointment with his parole officer. A chance
meeting sees him offered a job as a debt collector - but all’s not above board, and
if Aloysius wants to avoid heading back behind bars, he’s got his work cut out for
him. Macmillan, R299. • A new home in the suburbs offers a fresh start to a family
of four. It’s in a quiet, leafy road, with good schools, and is close to the sea and a
comfortable commute to London. Perfect. All bar the fact that it appears to be
the hunting ground for a serial killer. Fiona Cummins’ The Neighbour is as thrilling
as it gets. Macmillan, R290 • Blood in the Water by Jack Flynn is set in Boston’s
underworld, where the harbour chief, his 19-year-old daughter and a homeland
security agent are caught up in deadly game of cat and mouse with international
terrorists. Macmillan, R299
In a large house in London’s
fashionable Chelsea, a baby is awake
in her cot. Well-fed and cared for,
she’s happily waiting for someone to
pick her up. In the kitchen lie three
decomposing corpses, with a hastily
scrawled note. The three have been
dead for several days. So who’s looking
after the baby? There’s little better than
finding a new Lisa Jewell book on the
shelves ... The Family Upstairs is just
FABULOUS. Penguin, R290
Tom Kennedy and his young son,
Jake, have just moved to a quiet
village, hoping to heal the hurt after
the loss of their wife and mum. The
place they choose to live, Featherbank,
has a dark past ... 15 years before, a
serial killer, known as The Whisper
Man, abducted and murdered five
young boys. The killer was caught, and
this history doesn’t worry Tom and
Jake. Until another boy goes missing.
And Jake says he hears whispering at
his window. Described as gripping,
moving and brilliantly creepy ... an
outstanding new psychological thriller.
Penguin, R290
Also look out for ...
Daisy and Simon’s marriage is great,
particularly after the arrival of longedfor
daughter Millie. A happy little family
of three. So what if Simon drinks a bit
too much every now and then ... as
Daisy says, he’s just letting off steam.
Then one night at a party, things spiral
horribly out of control ... Adele Parks’
Lies Lies Lies is all about relationships,
marriage and secrets. A great read.
has become a good
friend throug the
years, offered her a job at a company
where she met Charl, her future
husband. “Looking back, I realise that
Elize never really needed a temporary
assistant, but rather appointed me
for Charl! Needless to say, I traded the
temporary position for the relationship,
and 11 years later we are still in love.
We got married in 2014.”
Since Ronel can remember, fashion
and beauty have always taken centre
stage in her life, but never could she
imagine that she would make a living
grown so much over the past few
years, that Ronel was able to establish
Studio Luxe Collective (located at
Warm Karoo). “This is a studio space
where I and a team of artists of the
highest quality provide makeup and
hairstyling services. We also offer
workshops for the everyday woman,
and masterclasses for other artists
where they can develop their artistic
and business skills. We are also in the
process of establishing an academy
where we are considering taking
hands with other academies to offer
internationally accredited courses in
the Free State and Northern Cape.”
Being an entrepreneur in the business
of luxury has been utterly rewarding
for Ronel, but definitely not always
easy. “I think the hardest part is that the
return on investment is slow. Everyone
thinks that being an entrepreneur is
like being an influencer: it’s fun, you
get to travel, attend events and that it’s
financially rewarding, and I suppose in
the long run it will be. But the everyday
reality is that every cent made goes
directly back into the building
blocks and the time and effort put
in don’t always pay off immediately.
Is it stressful? Absolutely. But is it
worthwhile? No doubt.”
So, makeup and fashion… it’s
something every woman can do on
her own, right? Wrong. What Ronel
does is offer direction, which largely
translates to the ultimate confident
booster. “To me, it’s not about how you
look when I’m done but rather about
how you feel. If you don’t feel like a
million bucks when you leave, then I
haven’t done my job.”
Three strict “rules” Ronel offers her
clients when figuring out their
unique styles, are: “You were created
uniquely, there is no one like you, so
I encourage you to enhance your
God given beauty. Secondly, find your
style personality and embrace it. It will
make you feel confident, empowered
and worthy. And lastly, create a good
balance between your style, your
wardrobe and your lifestyle.”
Style is a personal thing
“Style is different for each and every
person. A lot of women dress for their
lifestyle or they dress the way others want
them to. Sometimes they dress for how
they want to be perceived. So often, they
live a life wearing what they think they
should, but are not true to themselves.
Once you discover your true unique style,
you will feel more confident and will
most likely be complimented on how
well your style suits you.” Ronel suggests
booking a personal colour consultation
with an expert to determine which
colours best suit your personality and
complexion. A personal style consultant
will help you discover which styles of
clothing best suit your body shape, and
you’ll learn how to enhance your features
best.
The future
Ronel has stars in her eyes. She plans
to expand the studio with more artistic
talent, work on accreditation for the
academy and host more national and
international talent to upskill and develop
artists, consultants and stylists. “What
exactly the rest of the future holds, I’m
not sure, but what I do know, is that I trust
that God has one amazing plan and I’m
all on board, whichever way it goes.”
Ronel’s top 5beauty rituals
• Always remove your makeup before
you go to bed.
• Always wear sunblock.
• Hydration is key.
• Use a good skincare range. You
don’t have to use a lot of products
or expensive ones. Invest in a good
facewash and a good moisturiser, a
little goes a long way.
• Whenever you need a boost,
wear lipstick, it makes the world’s
difference to your confidence levels.
Liani
dra ligLiani
Piet Plessis, in Noordwes. Sy het ‘n
droomplaaslewe gehad as die jongste
musiek grootgeword.” Daarom dat Liani
vandag musiek maak, en daaruit lééf.
Na skool het sy arbeidsterapie aan die
UV studeer. Dis ook waar sy haar man
ontmoet het. Hulle kom albei van klein
dorpies af, en het onmiddellik gekliek.
Hulle is in 2004 getroud.
Vandag het Liani en haar man
vyf seuns (ja, VYF!) tussen die
ouderdomme 13 en 5. Hulle is Percy,
Wihann, Izak, Kalla-Dabar en Miga.
Hoewel musiek nog altyd deel was
van haar, het haar professionele
sangloopbaan eers ná die koms van
haar vyf kinders behoorlik vlamgevat.
rigting kon stuur oor wat ek wil hê as
ek ‘n loopbaan in die musiekbedryf
nastreef.
“In hierdie proses het ek vir Jacques de
Villiers (Joshua na die Reën) geskakel
vir raad met ‘n lied wat ek moes skryf.
Dit was die begin van ‘n baie kosbare
vriendskap. Jacques het al my musiek
verwerk en leiding geneem met die
produksie daarvan. Ek dink as ek moet
Ek is
regtig so dankbaar teenoor hom.”
Liani se musiek kan beskryf word as
kontemporêr, maar persoonlik beskryf
sy dit as ‘n voertuig van stories. “Elke
lied het ‘n spesifieke storie, wat gebore
is uit ware gebeure of daardeur
geïnspireer is. Ek dink ons het elkeen
‘n storie.
Hulle bly op ‘n plaas by Trompsburg,
omdat die plaasmeisie in haar vir ewig
wou bly voortleef. “Ek hou van enigiets
wat buite gedoen kan word. Buite
vir my ontspannend en ‘n lekker glas
wyn by ‘n mooi vuur is vir my soos
kuns.
ervaring as arbeidsterapeut.
arbeidsterapie-studies.
Ons vra vir Liani om haar
skoonheidsgeheime met ons te deel,
want regtig, om só besig te wees
met ‘n professionele loopbaan en vyf
woelwaters onder jou dak te hê, kan
‘n mens spreekwoordelik grys hare
gee! Haar antwoord is nederig. “Baie
dankie vir so ‘n mooi kompliment... Ek
weet nie of ek regtig sulke geheime
ken nie. Miskien, as mens dit soms
baie dinge beter. En lag. Lag is soos
“Ek gaan my heel beste
probeer om net aan te hou geniet
om stories te soek in die alledaagse
dinge. Ek gaan probeer om nie
perspektief te verloor oor waarom ek ‘n
musiekloopbaan nastreef nie... Ek gaan
Whether you’re stuck in a style rut or
simply looking to add some fresh finds
to your wardrobe, Get It has you covered
this spring with all the latest fashion
trends, giving you a glimpse into the
world of one of the city’s youngest and
most talked about designers.
Dress: Oupiter. R400
& daring
Sixteen-year-old Relebohile Patience Rampeta is taking the
fashion industry by storm. Her Italian inspired designs will
have you feeling like you’re walking down the runway at
Paris Fashion Week while you are actually only running your
daily errands in the Bloemfontein Central Business District.
In an exclusive interview the vibrant grade 11 scholar from
HTS Louis Botha told Get It that her company, Pareltia, is an
e-commerce website providing your go-to source for styles
influenced by the latest fashion, with added flair. “We aim to
inspire our customers to be the best version of themselves
and to be confident in their own skin, and of course, their
outfits. Our vision is fast-paced, forward-thinking and
fashion-centered at its core, and all our products reflect
these ideals.”
Rele was taught by her uncle and aunt, Paul and Cynthia
Tsoanyane, who have their own clothing/CMT business and
taught her how to sew back in 2017. “My love for fashion
grew when I participated in fashion shows in the past two
years. In September 2018 I went on an educational tour
to the USA. My mind was somehow mostly focused on
fashion and business on that side and my experience there
made me realise how much I wanted to make designing
my career,” Rele said.
Besides the fact that she loves fashion, this young girl chose
fashion designing as a career as she prefers doing things
her own way and according to her taking the education
path as a South African doesn’t look too promising.
Rele’s inspiration for her first collection comes from Italian
fashion and her love for the solar system. Her first collection
consists of ten outfits and she chose to name them after
the universe’s planets based on their qualities. “I replaced
the first letter from each planet or galaxy with one letter
from my first name as it consists of ten letters,” she said.
Her favourite designers include Rich Mnisi, Kentse Masilo
and Erin Robertson. When Rele is not busy with sketching
new designs she enjoys reading and going through the
latest fashion blogs as well as attending fashion events that
also help with keeping track of the latest fashion.
Rele’s goal for when she has completed her matric is to
make made-to-measure clothing and take over the fashion
industry.
To order some of her designs or see more of her work,
Sannie
Slabbert
inspireer
NWU gaan studeer. Hy werk nou as meganiese ingenieur in
Johannesburg.”
Daarom
ag ek myself as bevoorreg om in my pos waarde te kon toevoeg
só baie by hulle oor entrepreneurskap geleer .”
heen vir Sannie by dié instelling vervulling verskaf het. “FNB is
‘n familie wat sy waardes en beginsels nastreef, sy personeel
bemagtig om innoverend te kan wees en ondersteuning bied
aan al sy werknemers.”
Buite die kantoor geniet Sannie en haar gesin die buitelewe,
kampeer, stap, draf en tuinmaak. Hulle reis graag saam en hou
veral van tropiese eilande. “My man en seun geniet motors en
by.”
Wat lê nou vir Sannie voor? “Min mense weet dat ek gaande is
oor rock-musiek. Ek luister dit graag kliphard in my motor, en wil
nou in my tyd van aftrede leer
om elektriese kitaar te speel.”
Yena's
Heart
on a plate
Yena Mgobhozi lives for good, wholesome and tasty food.
She’s a recipe developer, blogger and health food enthusiast.
Welcome to Your Kitchen is Your New Gym!
ena is young. When speaking about the HEALTHY future
of young people in Bloem (and beyond), she has stars
in her eyes. Following her own struggles with weight and
health issues, Yena is determined to share her meal ideas and
inspiration with others.
She was raised in Bloemfontein by parents who are traditionally
in touch with their Zulu roots. “My parents did not want my siblings
and me to lose our knowledge of our culture when we moved
from KwaZulu-Natal to the Free State. So, my mother would prepare
countless Zulu traditional meals for the whole family. She was never
afraid to experiment and break boundaries with her food. This is
where I developed my love for cooking.”
Yena studied Hospitality Management at the CUT’s Hotel School, completed her
BTech in Hospitality Management, and this year did a post graduate certificate in
General Safety Management at Unisa.
Her affair with good food only began in 2016 when she lost 20kg in the space
of one year. “I was in my final year at varsity when my health took a turn for the
worst. I started having severe health problems. I was also diagnosed with heart
palpitations at a young age, and had respiratory problems.” She decided that she’d
had enough of being unhealthy, and started exercising and eating clean, nutritious
and wholesome food.
“This is where the idea of creating Kitchen New Gym was born and a food blogger/
recipe developer was formed. I now develop recipes that are easy to follow, taste
amazing and most importantly, are nutritious. I have been privileged enough to
work with two major South African brands, and I am currently developing recipes
for Natural Herbs and Spices.” She knew that the only way she would keep the
weight off would be by changing her lifestyle. She started to write healthy recipes
that could help her lose weight and also combat her cravings. “Those cravings are
real! I want my blog to be a platform that will inspire healthy eating among South
Africans and, of course, to let them know that weight loss starts in the kitchen and
not in the gym.”
Yena is also a firm believer of investing in your community. She has a slot on
The Serve on Kovsie FM every Thursday at 6pm. She’s also the co-founder of The
Unconventional Woman, which is an outreach programme that aims to assist
young girls from underprivileged schools.
“I believe that developing healthy recipes is the foundation of everything I do,
professionally and personally.” She shares two of her favourite fruity recipes with us.
For more, go to her blog at www.yourkitchen-newgym.com.
Yena’s Mango Curry
Preparation time: 20 minutes. Cooking
time: 20 minutes. Serves: 3-4
1 large mango
15 ml olive oil
1 medium onion (roughly chopped)
5 ml ginger powder
5 ml ground cumin
5 ml crushed garlic flakes
2.5 ml cinnamon powder
2.5 ml turmeric powder
5 ml onion powder
2.5 ml fennel seeds
1 green chili (finely chopped)
2.5 ml garam masala
Salt and pepper to taste
1 vegetable stock cube
1x 400 g can chickpeas
200 ml coconut cream
4 handfuls of chopped spinach
Peel and roughly chop mango and add
to a blender or food processor. Blend
until smooth and creamy. Set aside, to
be used later. Heat up a pan with oil and
add in onion, fry onion until translucent.
To the onion, add in all the spices, fry for
30 seconds to release the flavour of the
spices. To the onion and spices, add in
mango puree, vegetable stock and ½
cup/ 125 ml water. Cook for 5 minutes
until liquid has reduced. Drain and rinse
chickpeas, add to the curry mixture
along with coconut cream. Simmer for 10
minutes, or until chickpeas are warmed
through and the liquid has thickened
slightly. Add in spinach, stir well. Cook
until spinach is wilted. Serve the curry
over rice with a drizzle of yoghurt and a
sprinkle of fresh coriander.
Mixed berry ice
cream
Preparation time:
20 minutes.
Cooking time:
15 minutes.
Serves: 4
1 x 400 ml can full fat
coconut milk
180 ml soya cream
125 ml soya milk
20 ml cornflour
5 ml vanilla essence
Pinch of salt
45 ml brown sugar
150 g frozen mixed
berries
30 ml brown sugar
In a pot, heat coconut milk and soya cream until it starts to bubble around the
edges. Whilst waiting for the milk and cream to heat up, combine soya milk,
cornflour, vanilla, salt and 3 tablespoons sugar in a small bowl. Stir to ensure that
there are no lumps. Slowly whisk in cornflour mixture into the heated milk and
cream. Cook until the mixture thickens up. The mixture should resemble a thick
but pourable custard consistency. Remove from the heat, pour into a bowl and
place into the fridge for a few hour or even overnight until the mixture is cold. Pour
custard into an ice cream machine and let it churn according to manufacturer’s
instructions. The churning should not take more than 40 minutes or until the ice
cream forms a soft-serve consistency.
If you are not using an ice cream machine, pour the custard into a shallow freezeproof
container, place into the freezer for 3-4 hours. I would recommend that you
stir the ice cream every 30 minutes to break up any frozen sections, so that the ice
cream does not form any ice crystals. Do this until the ice cream forms a soft serve
consistency.
Meanwhile, place berries and sugar into a small
bowl and microwave the berries until the sugar has
dissolved and the berries are soft enough to mash.
Using a fork or a masher, mash the berries to your
desired consistency and place the berry sauce in
fridge until cold. Once ice cream has reached soft
serve consistency pour the berry sauce over the ice
cream and gently swirl the two mixtures together.
If you are using an ice cream machine transfer the
berry ice cream into a freeze-proof container and
freeze for 4 hours or overnight. Keep frozen until
ready to serve.
PROMOTION
SALTY satisfaction
There’s a new kid on the (salt) block. Bloemfontein is
welcoming a first-of-its-kind butchery and deli in the
heart of the city: We’ve been waiting for you, Salt Block!
The Salt Block is everything and a whole lot more
than you would expect of a ground breaking,
future-orientated, refreshing and funky butchery
and deli. Once you step into the beautifully
decorated shop in Pres Reitz Street in Westdene,
a surprise awaits you around every corner –
literally. There are home-made marmalades,
interesting condiments and beautifully packaged
meats and spices. Dry-aged beef hangs in a spectacular drying
cage right in the middle of the space, and the most alluring
cheeses and jams (including bacon jam – yes!) are on display.
The owners and management of The Salt Block have had a
strong need, if we may call it that, to offer Bloemfontein a
one-stop-shop where literally every sold item is carefully
picked, ethically sourced and 100% natural and organic.
“It’s about time we go back to our roots and cut out all
unnaturally processed or manipulated food and meats.
Here at The Salt Block, all our meats are dry aged and
sourced from farms where the animals are ethically
treated. We’re bringing that peace of mind to our
customers,” says manager, Sandy McMillan.
One of the shining stars at The Salt Block, is its
magnificently dry-aged steak. Dry-aged means going
back to the traditional way of aging meat: by letting it hang
Manager Sandy McMillan
in clean, dry air, whilst maturing to a state of delicious
tenderness in a natural environment.
“Although we believe that dry-aging is
the perfect way to mature meat, we do
also stock wet-aged meat to cater for
all client preferences. We really do try to
stay away from plastic at The Salt Block
as far as we can, to support a green
environment.”
The selection of cheeses, including the
oh-so-delicious string cheese, is to die
for. Noah’s Cheese (made in Clarens)
features significantly at The Salt Block
and is worth a taste. The mouth-watering
Salaté Cheese (a type of cheese used
in salads) also shouts sophistication –
perfect for that gourmet salad you intend
to take along to the next braai you’re
invited to. And don’t get us started on
the Mozarella balls, Jalapeno cheese, and
popular Vredendal cheese… delicious!
The Delikaat range sold at the butchery
is another aspect that gets us excited.
The range was created by a group of
women from drought-stricken farms in
the Bultfontein district, in an attempt to
keep their income up. But listen, these
deli products are not your average
apricot jam made by gran as we know
it. The combination of fresh ingredients
are mouth-watering and of the best
quality. You’ll be seeing marmalades,
salad dressings, bacon jams, sauces and
condiments that will take your meal
to the ultimate level. Its packaging is
enticing, and the origin of the range
is heart-warming. Who would want to
purchase an item or two (or six) from the
Delikaat range? Come have a look!
True to its name, The Salt Block sells
salt blocks which are used to sear and
cook meat on for a delicious, evenly
distributed salty taste. And let’s face
it – it’s super impressive to use! These
salt blocks come in various sizes and
the team at the butchery is available to
explain the step-by-step process on the
usage of these blocks.
Which brings us to the absolute star of
the show at The Salt Block – the range
of Wagyu steaks available for purchase
there. If you haven’t heard about Wagyu
before, in a nutshell: Wagyu cattle have
been bred for hundreds of years and are
regarded as a national treasure in Japan.
The secret lies in the animal’s marbling
– every chef’s holy grail. Marbling refers
to the small flecks of fat that can be
found in-between the muscle tissue.
And it's not just any fat. This fat has a low
melting point, which means that the fat
literally melts into the meat, producing a
buttery flavour that's rich and juicy while
having a silky tender texture. And it's this
sensation – of the meat melting in your
The team at The Salt Block
mouth, which really makes Wagyu beef a
magical and moreish eating experience.
Absolute Wagyu only makes use of
superior Wagyu genetics in all of
its breeding and beef production
programs. These superior genetics
enables us to produce beef with a high
marble score, which is of high appeal to
the customer. Absolute Wagyu complies
to all the Certified Wagyu Beef protocols.
These stringent protocols ensure full
traceability from farm to fork and it is
based on DNA testing and registering
the animals with the Wagyu Society of
South Africa.
Yes, it’s pricy. But it’s also a bucket list
type of pricy. If you’re a true meat lover,
you simply cannot live without at least
trying a proper cut of Wagyu steak once
in your life. And of course, some Wagyu
biltong. Mouth-watering doesn’t exactly
cut it.
So, for a brand new, eye-opening
experience of the new salty kid on the
block, make your way to The Salt Block
as soon as you get the chance. You won’t
be disappointed. As consumers, it’s our
duty to support local businesses who go
through the trouble of supporting other
local suppliers – especially the ones who
make it their core business to go about
an ethical way of manufacturing and
supplying good food.
In ‘n neutedop, jou agtergrond.
van my lewe ontmoet. Na my studies het ek my gemeenskapsdiens by die Nasionale Hospitaal en
Pelonomi gedoen. Daarna het ek by Netcare Pelonomi en Universitas se ongevalle sowel as by Dr. HM
Daarna my eie skuld. My vrou
droom nog altyd om oorsee vakansie te gaan hou, so dit is definitief ook op my lys. Laastens, as daar
gunstelingstokperdjie.

Ek het my B.Sc.
Fisioterapiegraad
in 2017 verwerf.
My doel as
Kies: Vlieg of onsigbaar wees?
Ek is van nature baie nuuskierig. Daarom
sien, is wonderlik. Om fisiese tegnieke te
gebruik en spesifieke rehabilitasie soos
hidroterapie toe te pas sodat pasiënte van
pyn ontslae kan raak, is waarna ek streef.
Hidroterapie, wat ons by ons praktyk
aanbied, is ook ongelooflik. Ek het vanjaar
verskeie hidroterapie-kursusse voltooi
sodat ek my kennis daaroor kan verbreed.
Fisioterapie het oor
my pad gekom toe
ek self ‘n besering
opgedoen het in
my graad 11-jaar.
Skielik wou ek niks
anders gaan studeer
nie en het ek sonder
enige plan B by Kovsies aansoek gedoen
om keuring. My doel as fisioterapeut is
Ek wil
God se kinders deur my werk dien. My
droom as fisioterapeut is om uiteindelik
as kenner in my veld bekend te staan.
Vlieg of onsigbaar?
Definitief om te kan vlieg. Die wêreld sou
skielik klein wees en vriende en familie
wat in die buiteland is, baie makliker
bereikbaar.
Die lekkerste deel van jou werk?
Ek geniet die verhoudings wat ek met
pasiënte opbou. Die lekker gesels en al die
stories.
Vlieg of onsigbaar?
Ek sal graag wil kan vlieg. Enige oefening
Hidroterapie is my gunstelingdeel van
fisioterapie. Ons het ‘n terapeutiese
regdeur die jaar 34°C is. Pasiënte
kan reeds vroeg ná ‘n operasie soos
rehabilitasie versnel.
Spring
has sprung
Getting outside more and enjoying the fresh spring air is one of the best
things of September! We’re all about pretty, petite flowers this month.
Read on for spring garden inspiration.
We’re planting…
the new bedding impatiens, ‘Beacon’, that
blooms from spring to the first frost and
is highly resistant to downy mildew. Busy
Lizzies (Impatiens walleriana) used to fill shady
gardens, until the fungus disease wiped them
out. After years of breeding and collaboration,
seed growers have finally bred a highly
resistant variety. It was successfully trialled
overseas and in Joburg last year and the
thumbs up given for its release this spring.
‘Beacon’ does not require any special
treatment. It does best in shade to semi-shade,
requires well-composted soil and regular
watering. Fertilise once a month with a liquid
fertiliser to encourage plentiful flowers. Flower
colours are Bright Red, Orange, Violet Shades,
Salmon, White and Coral as well as a mix. This
highly resistant impatiens is identifiable from
other varieties by a colourful ‘Beacon’ label.
Best for patios…
Verbena peruviana ‘Firehouse’ is perfect for hanging baskets and containers
because if forms a mound of flowers that easily fills a hanging basket or patio
planter. What’s different about this verbena is that it doesn’t cycle in and out of
flowers. New flowers are opening as the old ones die. The foliage is tough and
disease resistant too. Place in a position that receives morning sun and afternoon
shade. Baskets require daily watering in summer and containers every second
to third day. Fertilise with a liquid fertiliser for flowers twice a month. Plants are
available in eight different colours including purple fizz and lavender.
BUT not better QUALITY!
Garden tasks for September
• Plant out summer annuals like salvias, marigold, bedding dahlias, gazanias,
alyssum, dianthus, and mimulus, water twice a week and fertilise with a liquid
fertiliser once a month.
• Annuals to grow from seed for a big splash of colour include marigolds,
alyssum, cosmos, cornflowers, and lobelia as well as scatter packs which are
ready-made mixes of summer annuals for sun or shade.
• Perennials that grow easily from seed include hollyhocks, Shasta daisies, asters,
scabious, statice, sweet William, aquilegia, Arctotis, and foxgloves.
• Cut back or tidy up summer perennials to encourage new growth. Start
watering more regularly and fertilise with 5:1:5, 3:1:5 or 8:1:5.
• Feed irises with superphosphate. Cannas, day lilies, coreopsis and dahlias can
still be divided and replanted into well composted soil.
• Clivia shows take place in September and they are worth a visit if you want to
add to your collection of clivia.
• Amaryllis, daylilies, and Louisiana irises can be planted from early September
but wait until the middle of September to plant Crocosmia and dahlias.
• Keep watering spring flowering bulbs and Liliums.
• Fertilise flowering shrubs with 5:1:5 or 3:1:5 and foliage shrubs with 3:2:1. Trim
winter flowering shrubs such as poinsettia.
• If not done last month, scarify, aerate, fertilise and water the lawn. Water once a
week or every two weeks and mow weekly when necessary.
effektiewe BabeeLuv-baba-draers is
inspirerend.
Sy het in Bloemfontein grootgeword
en is as kind geïnspireer deur haar
ma se naaldwerkvermoë en haar
pa se praktiese benadering tot
die lewe. Na skool is sy vir
twee jaar Londen toe
en het daarna, kort
ná haar terugkeer
na Bloem, haar
man ontmoet. “Ons
is toe saam Suid-
Korea toe. Daar het ek
swanger geraak met
Eleana en sy is daar
gebore. Met koliek…
dit was absoluut nag.
Daar het ek my reis
met BabeeLuv begin.”
Nooit het Leandri
gedroom dat
BabeeLuv so ‘n
groot besigheid sou word
nie. Eleana (tans vier en
‘n half ) het koliek gehad, is laktoseintolerant
en het haar dae en nagte
omgeruil as baba. Sy het bonop
erge skeidingsangs gehad weens
die vreemde wyse waarop vrouens
geboorte gee in die Suid-Koreaanse
hospitale. “Sy was nege ure weg van
my af na geboorte. Dit het veroorsaak
dat ek haar konstant by my moes
My arms kón net nie meer
‘n BabeeLuv drasak
gemaak deur Leandri
nie. Ek het ‘n baie duur babadrasak
gehad, maar sy het selfs daarin baie
gehuil.
Weer terug in SA, was haar en haar
man se begroting maar knap. Leandri
het begin rondsoek vir patrone
om haar eie baba-wrap te maak
sodat sy vir Eleana teen haar lyf
kon dra. “Ek het na die naaste
materiaalwinkel gegaan, ‘n
stuk lap gekoop, en haar
teen my vasgedraai.
Die fraaiings het nog
so gehang, maar binne
vyf minute het sy
geslaap!”
Mammas het haar
begin uitvra oor haar
manier van baba-dra,
en sy het vir familie
en vriende wraps
begin maak. Al hoe
meer mense het begin
belangstelling toon.
Sy het ‘n sogenaamde
Wraptai begin maak,
op versoek van ‘n
vriendin wat iets tussen ‘n wrap en
‘n sterker drasak gesoek het. “Toe
kom die Ring Slings, en uiteindelik
die Hybrid Buckle Carrier. Hierdie
drasak het só ontwikkel dat dit nou
van geboorte af tot by 16kg gemaklik
gebruik kan word. Ek maak ook nou
my eie unieke patrone sodat my
ontwerpe nie onregmatig nagemaak
kan word nie (dit het ongelukkig
al gebeur). Die Stretchy is ook ‘n
gunsteling onder mammas, omdat
dit van so ‘n ligte materiaal gemaak
is – spesiaal uitgesoek vir ons Suid-
Afrikaanse klimaat.
“Die naam BabeeLuv is `n
woordspeling met baby love. My ma
is oorlede ‘n paar maande voordat ek
swanger geraak het met Eleana, en
dit was haar troetelnaam vir my. So
“Daar is vir my geen ander
manier nie. Dit is die natuurlikste
vorm van ouerskap. Om ‘n goeie
ouer te wees, moet ons dit instinktief
doen. Daarvoor moet ons ons kinders
naby ons hê.” Dis waarom dit vir
Leandri soveel waarde daaraan heg
dat ‘n ma haar baba teenaan haarself
dra. Dit behou die hegte band tussen
ma en baba. Dit is ook goed vir babas
wat sukkel met krampe, winde en
refluks. Dit laat hulle veilig, geborge
en geliefd voel, en die mamma (of
draer) kan vinnig agterkom as iets
‘n mate postpartum-depressie. Dit
moedig gesonde breinontwikkeling
en emosionele stabiliteit by die
baba aan,” sê Leandri. Dit maak
mamma se hande los sodat sy met
haar alledaagse take kan aangaan,
en maak uitstappies buite die huis
maklik en lekker!
Sommige waspoeiers kan baba se vel irriteer, of selfs
‘n allergiese reaksie veroorsaak. Ons hou van die
Personal Touch Baby Love-materiaalversagter, omdat
dit spesiaal geformuleer is vir sensitiewe velletjies. Dit
is dermatologies getoets, nie-staties en ruik hemels.
“Ek sê altyd, enige vorm van baba-dra is beter as geen. Maar ‘n goeie wrap,
sling en drasak hou baba regop, snoesig teen mamma en baba se rug is in sy
natuurlike C-kruwe.
gehelp daar in Suid-Korea.
aangebied is.”
Leandri se 4 moet-hê baba-artikels:
1. ‘n Baba-draer of wrap (uit die aard van die saak!)
2. ‘n Lekker doeksak. “Een wat jy soos ‘n rugsak kan dra, want dit help baie as
jy jou baba voor aan jou lyf dra. ‘n Sak wat funksionele kompartemente het.
Die Mally Bag (by Pikkies Boetiek beskikbaar) werk lekker.”
3. ‘n Toedraaikombersie of ‘n swaddler. “Meer spesifiek – daardie kombersie
wat met Velcro toedraai. Ek kon glad nie my baba met ‘n gewone kombers
styf toedraai nie.”
4. As jy borsvoed – ‘n silikoon-borspomp. “Iets wat jy enige tyd en plek kan
gebruik, en wat nie ‘n kragpunt of batterye benodig nie. Mamamoo is die
handelsmerk wat ek vir mammas aanbeveel.”
WELKOM,
KLEIN WONDERWERK
verwelkom. Haar koms was vir hulle ‘n ekstragroot
wonderwerk.
“Ná drie jaar van sukkel en menige
negatiewe swangerskaptoetse het ek
een oggend die woord pregnant op die
stokkie gesien… en dit het gevoel asof
ek die grootste prys in my lewe gewen
het! Ek sal dit nooit vergeet nie.”
Splinternuwe mamma, Jean-Mari, gesels
met Get It uit Ierland, waar sy en CJ tans
woon. Sy het vroeër op internasionale
vlak geswem (en ook rekords laat spat!),
en is in 2016 in Bloemfontein toegelaat
as advokaat, hoewel sy nie tans in
Limerick, Ierland, praktiseer nie.
Jean-Mari se swangerskap was die
inlig. “Ek is op die ouderdom van
26, nadat dokters my twee keer
verkeerdelik gediagnoseer het,
uiteindelik met endometriose sowel
as vroeë ovariumveroudering (VOV)
gediagnoseer. Endometriose is baie
algemeen en het my dus nie so groot
geskok nie. Die VOV was wel vir my ‘n
skok.” Eenvoudig gestel, beteken dit dat
Jean-Mari pre-menopousaal is.
aanneem of ander opsies moet dink.
“Ek het die endometriose laat verwyder
en was vir ‘n jaar lank op verskeie
hormoonbehandelings om te kyk of ek
natuurlik kon swanger raak. Dit het nie
gewerk nie,” vertel Jean-Mari. In 2018 het
hulle intrauteriene inseminasie probeer,
wat ook onsuksesvol was. “Ek was
platgeslaan. IVB (in vitro- bevrugting)
swangerskapstoets in haar hand vas
te hou, was onwerklik vir Jean-Mari.
“Ná drie jaar se gesukkel het ek ‘n vrees
opgebou om enigsins te toets om te
kyk of ek swanger is. Ek het daardie
oggend alleen tuis getoets, voordat
in daardie stadium vir my gevoel asof
positiewe toes was oorweldigend!”
Haar swangerskap was gesond en
maklik en vir Jean-Mari was dit die
héél lekkerste gevoel om Everli te voel
beweeg. Hoewel sy ‘n ligte toestand van
karpale tonnelsindroom ontwikkel het,
was elke oomblik van haar swangerskap
vir Jean-Mari ‘n groot seën en vreugde.
Haar raad aan ander vroue wat dieselfde
paadjie met vrugbaarheidskwessies
stap, is om ‘n spesialis te gaan spreek as
hulle vermoed dat iets fout is. “Ek was
jaarliks by my ginekoloog, en hy het niks
vreemds opgespoor nie. As jy onseker
is oor jou diagnose of jou vrugbaarheid,
moenie huiwer om vir ‘n tweede opinie
te gaan nie. Dis JOU gesondheid en jou
lyf, doen wat reg voel vir jou.”
Die ondersteuning van haar man
en haar familie het haar gedra deur
hierdie tyd. Sy raai ook mense aan om
sensitief te wees oor die swangerskaponderwerp
en nooit vrae te vra soos
“wanneer begin julle met ‘n gesin?” of
“wanneer kry julle nog enetjie?” nie.
“Ek sal mense aanraai om eerder net
te ondersteun met: ‘ek is hier as jy wil
praat’.”
The quality of food is affected through
modern processing, transportation and
the pre-occupation of food producers with
appearance and shelf life. These factors,
combined with imbalanced diets contribute
to an inadequate intake of vital nutrients.
Nutritional supplementation is therefore
essential in the modern world.
Water, carbohydrates, fats, protein,
vitamins and minerals are essential to life.
During pregnancy and especially while
breastfeeding, a mother’s nutritional
requirements change significantly and the
recommended nutrient intake of protein,
vitamins and minerals increases.
Evidence is emerging that a mother’s diet
and lifestyle influence the long-term health
of her children. For babies to develop
optimally during pregnancy they need
the right nutrients. After birth, breast milk
becomes the main source of nutrients
and is supplied through the consumption
of breast milk. So it is very important
that mothers get the nutritional support
to allow babies to develop optimally
before birth, as well as to support optimal
nutrition status during breastfeeding.
There is increasing support that
supplementation of specific vitamins,
minerals and omega-3 fatty acids can have
a positive impact on maternal health in
terms of the prevention of pre-eclampsia,
miscarriage, preterm birth, low birth
weight, gestational diabetes and also on
the long-term health of the baby 1 .
All nutrients are important during
development, but folate, vitamin
B12, iron, and zinc are especially
important due to their key roles
in the synthesis of DNA, new cells
and their ability to prevent certain
neonatal diseases.
Several studies have explored
the link between micronutrient
deficiencies and growth failure 2 .
It is thus imperative that mothers get the
nutritional support to allow babies to
develop optimally before birth, as well
as to ensure a big enough supply of high
quality mother’s milk after birth. In general,
infants will consume only about half of their
recommended Adequate Intake (AI) of the
“priority” micronutrients if their mother is
depleted 3 .
A healthy balanced diet is important before
and during pregnancy as well as during
breastfeeding. Nutritional shakes, such as
the Mom2B Pregnancy Shakes, provide
advanced nutritional support to expectant
mothers and their babies. These delicious
shakes are high in protein, folic acid as well
as fibre. In addition, Mom2B contains a wide
spectrum of vitamins and minerals and
because these powders are low in fat (yay),
they do not cause nausea or contribute
towards excessive weight gain.
Must-have
Every
baby medicines
mom knows that your medicine
cabinet should be stocked for those 3am
aches, fevers and pains. Here are some of
Chantelle van der Bijl’s (Bloem MomDoc
on Facebook) essentials to have and some
pointers on how to use them.
Paracetamol / Panado / Calpol – for
pain and fever. It is called the GPs
choice for a reason! It must always
be your first line of treatment for a
fever and pain. Remember, by giving
paracetamol with other pain meds, it
potentiates the effect, so you will get a
better response from both. For children
below three months, consult with your
GP first before giving it. Always check
if you use combination syrups (like
Stillpane, Sinumax, etc.) that they do not
contain paracetamol, otherwise your
will overdose your child.
Neurofen / Ibuprofen / Ponstel – Also
a good medicine for pain and fever.
To only be given from six months. Try
not to give it if your little one might
be dehydrated or behind on fluids.
It can cause some kidney damage in
that case. These can be combined with
paracetamol.
Allecet / Cetrizine syrup – A good
antihistamine for allergies. It is nonsedating
and usually a daily dose. I
prefer it over Allergex (it makes you
sleepy) and has to be given three times
a day.
Sinumax Ped – My go-to if my toddler
has a stuffy or runny nose. Bear in mind
it contains paracetamol, so don’t add
regular paracetamol as well. To be used
from two years.
Prospan – A herbal cough syrup that
can be used from birth.
Sterimar – My favourite saline nasal
spray for blocked noses. Can be used
from birth.
Iliadin nasal spray/drops – A good
decongestant for a blocked nose. Not
to be used for more than three to five
days. This is very important, as it can
cause worse blockage if used longer,
and they become dependent on it.
Probiflora Junior – A daily probiotic
to keep things in balance. Good to use
with a runny stomach.
Bactroban ointment – For cuts that
might be an infection risk. Don’t use
it routinely for cuts, as you can create
resistance by using it if there is no
indication.
Lacson syrup – A laxative safe for
kiddies.
Glycerine suppositories – For the
constipated little ones.
Dilinct cough syrup – A cough
suppressant for a dry cough.
Remember, a cough is a reflex, so you
don’t want to suppress it. So only use it
if the cough is totally dry and the cough
really messes up your toddler’s sleep.
From two years.
Linctopent – Good cough syrup for
loosening phlegm and can be used
from infancy.
Sinupret – A herbal preparation for
sinusitis and infection.
Smecta – A good binding agent when
your little one has diarrhoea. You never
give an anti-diarrheal to kids, but this
one is safe as it does not stop the
diarrhoea, but binds it instead.
Antifungal cream – for Candida nappy
rash.
Antipeol ointment – My saving
grace for any nappy rash. Highly
recommended and it has not failed me
once.
Scopex / Hyospasmol syrup – For
stomach cramps. Can be used from one
month.
Burnshield – For emergency treatment
of burns.
Panamor suppositories – Same class
of ingredient as Neurofen. So not
to be used with Neurofen/Ponstel.
Remember, suppositories are not more
effective than oral syrup. They are to be
used as a backup if your little ones can’t
keep their medicine down.
Empaped suppositories – Paracetamol
is the active ingredient. Again do not
use it if you have given paracetamol
orally. Always check other syrups to see
if it does not contain paracetamol.
Valoid syrup – From one year of age for
nausea. Good to be used for a long car
trip if they are prone to motion sickness.
Andolex C gel – A numbing gel to be
used on gums to relieve teething pain.
Prodol – For painful gums when
teething. Do not exceed application as
stated on the leaflet.
Anthisan / Allergex ointment – For
those itchy mosquito bites.
Rehydrate – Rehydration fluid for cases
of diarrhoea.
When in doubt about which
medication to use, the best is always to
consult with your GP or paediatrician.
Sleep baby
like a
Your nights as mom of a new-born can either be a dream or a nightmare. While each baby
differs, certain aspects of baby sleep remain steady, as sleep consultant, Salomé Botes, writes.
Let’s start with your new-born from
the beginning. Please remember that
you cannot ‘spoil’ your new-born. I
encourage all parents of new-borns to
embrace this so-called fourth trimester.
Hold your baby, cuddle your baby,
‘wear’ your baby. Get to know this little
human.
The next phase will be infancy.
When your new-born moves to infancy
at 12 weeks, this is where you can
start to look at helping and guiding
them with sleep. Follow a set routine
with bedtime. This will help them to
understand that sleep will follow. The
key here is to help and guide your baby.
It is never too early to work on the
foundation of good sleeping habits and
start implementing the building blocks
of good sleep.
From 16 weeks onwards you can help
your baby by looking at ‘crutches’.
Crutches are the things that your baby
relies on to sleep. It might be feeding,
rocking, etc. Consider removing
crutches from the nap and bedtime
routine. You can guide your baby by
placing him/her down while drowsy
and allow for the baby to fall asleep.
When is a good time to move your
baby to his or her own room?
This is a very personal decision as some
parents let their baby sleep in their own
room from day one, while others prefer
to have their baby in the room with
them until they are a bit older. Things
to take into consideration: the older
your baby gets, the more aware they
become. When everyone is sleeping in
one room, it might also create wakeups
during the night because we are all
noisy sleepers.
A question asked a lot is: When will my
baby sleep through the night? This
differs as each baby is different, but
there are several constants. Is your baby
over six months, on solid foods and has
he or she doubled their birth weight?
Some babies take longer to go without
a nightly feed, but over six months, if
your baby is healthy and if your baby
still needs milk at night, it will only be
one feed at night. More than that might
be a crutch.
Most healthy babies over 12 months
do not need a nightly feed. They are
able to sleep the whole night. And yes,
waking up at night is normal, as we all
move from light sleep, to deep sleep
and back to REM sleep. And yes, babies
do have the skill to put themselves back
to sleep.
Day naps are crucial
It is important for your baby to get the
needed sleep during the day. Keeping
your baby awake during the day will not
make them sleep better at night. Sleep
promotes sleep.
Awake times
between naps:
New-born: 45 min – 90 mins
3 months: 90 mins
4 months: 1h45
5 months: 2:00h
6 months: 2h15
7 months: 2.5 hours
8 months: 3 hours
When is a good time to
move your baby from a cot
to a bed?
Between two and a half and three years
is a good age. What is important with
this move is to keep in mind that your
toddler of 18 months knows what a bed
is and that we sleep on a bed, but they
do not understand that they need to
stay on the bed the whole night. This is
when the night trekking starts and your
toddler gets up multiple times a night.
It is also not safe for your toddler to walk
around the house alone at night. You
really do want to keep him in his bed,
in his room, the whole night. Therefore,
you need to make sure that your
toddler is ready for this move before
moving him to a bed.
When looking at good sleep,
we need to look at all the
building blocks of sleep.
Sleep can’t be looked at in
isolation. Things we need to
look at:
• Crutches: What does your baby rely
on to sleep?
• Routine and schedule: routine
during day is important, awake
times and enough age-appropriate
sleep.
• Bedtime routine: It is good to have
a bedtime routine and keep things
calm during this time.
• Nutrition: We want to focus on little
tummies being full during the day
so they can sleep well at night.
• Environment: A safe sleep is very
important for babies under 12
months. The sleep environment is
for sleep and not for playing and
eating.
Other factors that influence sleep:
screen time, temperature and sickness.
All these blocks need to be in place.
If you are struggling with baby or
toddler sleep problems, get help.
Sometimes they just need a little bit of
help to make sure they sleep better.
Ready, steady, eat!
Baby’s first foods… how, when and what? There are different beliefs and approaches. We asked
dietician Nicolien Wydeman to offer some guidance.
The first thousand days of an infant’s life are extremely important as this is
the period where rapid growth occurs. Until six months of age, human milk is
undeniably the perfect food a baby can get. Breastmilk contains certain immune
factors to support the infant’s immature immune system and helps to protect a
baby from common infections. It is also made up of the necessary energy and
nutrients in the appropriate amounts and changes as the baby grows.
When to introduce solid foods:
Between 4 – 6 months a baby’s tongue movement is not yet coordinated to handle
solid foods. Babies still use a suckling method to drink milk and might struggle with
solid foods. It is safer to introduce solid foods closer to or after six months when
a baby is able to maintain head and neck control. Starch-based, iron-rich infant
cereals are usually introduced first. This should never be given in a bottle as it can
cause choking and the baby needs to learn how to feed from a spoon. Various
other foods may follow after porridge has been introduced as long as one food
is introduced at a time (mashed pumpkin instead of pumpkin tart that contains
other ingredients as well). This helps parents to identify allergic reactions. If a dish
contains many ingredients such as eggs or flour and the child has an allergic
reaction it will be difficult to determine which ingredient caused the reaction.
Introduce vegetables before fruit to ensure that it is tolerated better in the future.
Breastfed infants are also more likely to accept solid food varieties better than
formula fed babies as they have already tasted some of the flavours that transferred
through the breastmilk.
Directions for home preparation of baby foods
1. Select fresh, high quality fruits, vegetables, or meats.
2. Clean, wash, and trim food in as little water as possible.
3. Cook until tender in as little water as possible. Avoid overcooking, which may
destroy heat-sensitive nutrients.
4. Do not add sugar or salt including aromat and spices – herbs such as
cinnamon, parsley, oregano, rosemary are better options.
5. Add enough water for the food to be easily puréed.
6. Strain or purée the food using an electric blender or a kitchen strainer.
7. Pour purée into an ice cube tray and freeze.
Do’s:
• Enjoy meals at the family table –
this gives you the opportunity to
teach your child table manners and
to bon as a family.
• Children need routine. If a family
meal is delayed, children should
still receive their meals at the usual
time as far as possible.
• Allow children (+/- 1 year old) to
use their fingers to eat and provide
assistance where necessary until
they are able to use utensils such
as spoons (+/- 2 years old).
• Be an example for your child:
Choose nutrient-rich foods and
encourage daily physical activity.
• Offer well balanced meals - variety
is key. This might help to prevent
your child becoming a picky eater
at a later stage.
Don’ts:
• Do not add honey to food
intended for infants younger than
1 year of age. Honey can contain
Clostridium botulinum spores
which cause botulism. Young
infants do not have the immune
capacity to resist this infection.
• Children who are put to bed with a
bottle (milk or tea or sugary drinks)
have a high risk for developing
dental caries. Rather teach your
child to drink from a cup and
encourage good oral hygiene
practices.
• Don’t force feed a child if they are
unwilling to eat. Try to determine
the reason why the child does
not want to eat, for example
inactivity, being too tired, or not
being hungry. If a child does not
eat the food available, remove the
plate after the meal and try again
at the next meal or an hour later if
necessary.
What about Baby-Led Weaning (BLW)?
• BLW is an approach to introduce solid foods to a baby’s diet where the baby
feeds him/herself and the parents do not use the traditional spoon-feeding
approach.
Advantages of BLW:
• Babies get used to the texture of food by touching and playing with the food.
• No force feeding occurs as the baby determines intake of amounts of food.
Disadvantages of BLW:
• Not all six-month old children are developmentally ready to start feeding solids.
• There is a high risk for choking if food is not prepared soft enough – most
graspable food are not suitable for 6 month old babies as they are unable to
tolerate the textures yet.
Must-have for baby food
preparation: a Baby
Bullet!
Chickpeas for babies
1 tin chickpeas, drained but reserve liquid
Juice of half a lemon
¼ cup Tahini (you’ll find this on the shelves
of Dis-Chem or any health food store.)
¼ cup Full Cream Yoghurt (optional)
2 Tbs Olive Oil
½ tsp Ground Cumin (optional)
Fresh Garlic (1-2 tsp) (optional)
In your Nutribullet or Baby Bullet, start
with the tahini and lemon juice. Pulse for
30 seconds. Drizzle in the olive oil with the
motor running. Add the drained chickpeas
and yoghurt (and cumin/garlic if using).
Blend for a minute. If the consistency
isn’t right, add a tablespoon at a time
of the reserved tinned liquid, with the
motor running. Voila! You can food this to
your baby by the spoon, or hand them
veggie sticks for them to dip and eat. (Via
Remember:
• Prepare food
appropriately to be
picked up and easily
held, but it should still be
cooked until soft.
• Avoid adding salt and
sugar.
• Choose a variety of foods
that should gradually be
introduced in a broad
variety of textures,
colours and shapes.
• Avoid hard foods,
especially small and
roundly shaped such as
nuts, grapes and pieces
of apple as it is a choking
hazard.
• Never leave your child
alone during mealtimes.
Hoekom moet jou kleuter ‘n
voordele daarvan is.
moet plaasvind. Waar kom
die geld vandaan wat in die
spaarvarkie gegooi word?
Hoekom word die geld in
die spaarvarkie gegooi?
Wanneer kan die geld
weer uit die spaarvarkie
gehaal word? Wanneer die
geld uit die spaarvarkie
gehaal word, waarvoor
kan dit gebruik word? Om
dus eers dié vrae met jou
kleuter te hanteer, sal die hele
spaarproses meer aanloklik en selfs pret
maak.
Waar kom die geld vandaan wat in
die spaarvarkie gegooi word? Leer jou
kleuter dat harde werk beloon word
en moedig entrepreneuriese denke
aan. Laat jou kleuter takies rondom die
huis verrig teen vergoeding, of hou
‘n rommelverkoping op die sypaadjie
waarvan jou kleuter in beheer is. My eie
spaarvarkie hê?
‘n Spaarvarkie is meer as net ‘n oulike ornament op jou kind se bedkassie. Gebruik dié
geleentheid om jou kleuter waardevolle lesse oor geld te leer, skryf Senior Finansiële Beplanner,
Horace Terry.
natuurlik teen ‘n wins. Hoekom word
die geld in die spaarvarkie gegooi?
Kleuters moet verstaan dat indien hy
of sy nou R20 het, dit nie alles op een
slag by die winkel uitgegee moet word
nie. Spandeer byvoorbeeld R15, en
gooi R5 in die spaarvarkie.
As jou kleuter verstaan dat
hy of sy moet spaar om in die
toekoms iets te kan koop
wat duur is, sal dit hom of
haar aanmoedig om meer
gereeld en ook groter
bedrae te begin spaar.
Wanneer kan die geld
weer uit die spaarvarkie
gehaal word? Moenie net
spaar vir die doel van spaar
nie. My kleuters het elkeen
drie spaarvarkies.
Stel ‘n vaste
toedeling tot die drie spaarvarkies vas,
byvoorbeeld in my eie geval word 60%
(30%/30%) van elke bedrag wat gespaar
word toegdeel aan spaarvarkies
nommer 1 en 2, terwyl 40% na
spaarvarkie nommer 3 gaan.
Wanneer die geld uit die spaarvarkie
gehaal word, waarvoor kan dit gebruik
word? Laat jou kleuter self besluit wat
sy of haar doel is waarvoor gespaar
moet word. Dit sal jou kleuter net meer
aanmoedig om te spaar. Omdat my
eie kleuters elk drie spaarvarkies het,
word daar op ‘n maandelikse en jaarlikse
spaardoelwit besluit, met natuurlik die
“jackpot” in die derde spaarvarkie vir
iewers in die toekoms. Leer jou kleuter
dan van rente. Indien hy of sy spaar,
sal daar ekstra geld by sy of haar geld
So kan jy byvoorbeeld
jou kleuter met ekstra rente beloon,
indien hy of sy spaarvarkie nommer 1
As ’n ouer is jou kinders jou alles.
wil bekommer.
Sumari, grondslagfase-onderwyseres
en gekwalifiseerde berader wat Canvas
“Ek het op ‘n plaas naby Vanderkloof
grootgeword en het weens my liefde
vir kinders ná skool onderwys studeer.”
Nadat sy haar honneursgraad in
opvoedkundige sielkunde voltooi het,
het sy in Durbanville gewerk, en daarna
geregistreer as ‘n berader.
“My liefde vir kuns het ek definitief
by my ma gekry. Sy is ‘n ongelooflik
kreatiewe mens en kuns was daagliks
deel van my lewe. My liefde vir kinders
Dis eers toe ek met Canvas Club begin
liefde vir kuns en kinders bymekaar
sou kom. In my beroep as berader
sien ek elke dag met watter aaklige
dinge kinders moet worstel, en wat ‘n
wonderlike uitlaatklep kuns is.”
Canvas Club vier die wonder van
kuns deur weeklikse klassies vir 1- tot
13-jariges aan te bied waar hulle die
geleentheid het om ouderdomgepaste
kunsprojekkies van sowat ‘n uur
lank aan te pak. Canvas Club het 40
takke regoor Suid-Afrika, Namibië
en Nieu-Seeland. Die kurrikulums
is ontwikkel deur arbeidsterapeute
en fokus op fyn motoriese
ontwikkeling, probleemoplossing- en
prosesseringsvaardighede. Dit is alles
groot woorde, maar die genot wat
kindertjies uit dié klassies put, is sigbaar
op hul gesiggies!
Die voordele van kuns vir kinders van
klein tot groot strek ver. “Dit gee kinders
geleentheid om hulself op maniere uit
te druk sodat volwassenes begrip vir
hul gevoelens en emosies kan hê. Dit
bevorder selfvertroue en is ‘n fantastiese
spanningsverligter,” sê Sumari.
“Kinders leer wanneer hulle speel – dis
‘n natuurlike proses wat plaasvind. Deur
middel van verskillende reuke, geure en
teksture raak kinders konkreet bewus
van die wêreld rondom hulle. Deur te
speel met verskillende teksture, vorm
deel van ons ontwikkeling, groot en
fyn motoriese spiere ontwikkel, kinders
reduce a baby’s anxiety.
Also, the trace amounts
of alcohol found in the
extract creates a warm,
comforting sensation.
Soak a cotton swab with
the extract and apply to
your baby’s gums.
1Peeled Ginger
2
Root
Ginger is a natural anti
inflammatory that helps
to relieve teething pain
by soothing the nerve
endings in the gums. For
the strongest effect, rub
a slice of peeled ginger
over your baby’s gums
for 2-3 minutes.
3
Freeze a
Washcloth
Freeze a damp
washcloth and let your
baby chew on it for a
cool, numbing sensation.
For some variety, you
can tie one end in a knot
before freezing, or soak
the cloth in chamomile
tea instead of water.
5Baby biltong
Husband going on a
hunting trip? Save some
mildly salted biltong for
babe! Some babies will love
the taste, and the biltong is
rough, durable, and chewfriendly.
One piece of biltong
could last for an entire day!
Of course, too much sodium
or salt can be harmful to an
infant, so make sure to find a
low-sodium brand. Ask you
butcher for baby biltong –
most butcheries make them.
Pregnant
and sick?
These meds are allowed…
Being pregnant is such a joyful time but nobody prepares you for the downside of being ill.
According to our expert on medication, Dr Chantelle van der Bijl, pregnant moms often need
advice about what and what not to use.
During pregnancy, your focus may
have shifted to your growing baby. But
you, too, may need some extra love,
especially if you get sick. The options
of medications that are safe to use are
limited. Pregnancy is a fragile time
for both mother and child, and the
medicines that pregnant women take
could have long-lasting effects on
their unborn children. Generally, you
should not take any over-the-counter
medication while pregnant unless it is
necessary.
Pregnancy supplements are highly
recommended during pregnancy, as
they help ensure that you and your baby
are getting the maximum benefit from
vital nutrients. Ensure your pregnancy
supplement contains folate, iron,
vitamin D, Omega fish oils, calcium and
magnesium. A good probiotic is also
recommended.
Use these medications when
you have…
Pain and fever:
The only tested analgesic safe during
pregnancy is Paracetamol (Panado).
Aspirin and other NSAIDs (non-steroidal
anti-inflammatories) like Ibuprofen
and Diclofenac are not safe for the
unborn baby. Local measures like hot
compresses or relaxation can also be
effective, depending on where the pain
is. A pregnancy massage does wonders
for back pain; just ensure your therapist
is trained to massage a pregnant
woman.
Common cold and cough:
First try conservative measures like
resting and increasing your fluid intake.
Use a saline nasal spray like Sterimar to
clear the nasal passages. You can use
a decongestant nasal spray like Iliadin
for no longer than five days. A steroidal
nasal spray like Avamys can be used for
longer. Adco-Linctopent and Prospan
can safely be taken for a cough. Regular
flu-mixes, especially if they contain
pseudo-ephedrine, should be avoided.
ACC-200 can be used safely to thin
mucous. Use Vitamin C to assist with
immunity.
Nausea and vomiting:
This one is very common in the first
trimester of pregnancy. Try home
remedies, like eating small meals
throughout the day or eating ginger
biscuits before reaching for medication.
Vitamin B6 and Asic are safe to try. If
these measures do not work, your
doctor might prescribe Zofran if the
benefit outweighs the risk.
Heartburn:
Conservative measures like eating
small meals, not wearing tight clothing
and avoiding heartburn-inducing
foods should be tried first. Gaviscon is
considered safe if used in moderation. If
the heartburn is still severe after these
measures, your doctor may prescribe a
Proton-Pump-inhibitor, Altosec, in a low
dose.
Diarrhoea:
Make sure you keep up your fluid intake
and eat toast and bananas to try and
stop the diarrhoea conservatively. Use
Imodium or Smecta only if the diarrhoea
is severe, to prevent dehydration.
Allergies:
Try avoiding known allergens as much
as possible. Antihistamines are usually
considered safe, like Loratadine or
Allergex. If you suffer from sinusitis, a
steroidal nasal spray like Avamys, would
be of benefit.
Constipation:
Movicol or Lactulose is the medication
of choice for constipation. However,
try upping your fluid intake, getting
more fibre in your diet and doing mild
exercises. If you develop haemorrhoids,
Anusol is safe to use.
Candida vaginal infections:
Rather don’t try home remedies for this
one. Use Candizole cream vaginally to
treat the infection.
Leaking urine:
This can be due to the extra weight and
pressure of your baby pressing on your
bladder and pelvic floor. This happens
especially when you laugh, sneeze
or run. Regular pelvic floor exercises
during and after pregnancy will help. A
physiotherapist specialising in women’s
health can assist.
When in doubt about medication, ask
your doctor before taking or using it.
Things to do in Bloem
with kids
We’re fortunate to live in a city that really
values family life and has an amazing kiddies’
culture.
Planes and burgers = the
BEST combination
Take your little ones to Airborne Café,
a family friendly restaurant situated at
Bloemfontein Parachute Club at Tempe
Airport. They have a superb outside
area with seats and umbrellas, bouncy
castles, a playground, plastic bikes and
kiddies’ tables to do arts and crafts.
All this, while witnessing parachuters,
planes taking off and landing, and
helicopters doing their rounds. This is
such a win! Contact: 082-445-1794.
Eat and play
There are literally tonnes of restaurants
and coffee shops in Bloem which cater
brilliantly for kids, so that you can enjoy
some mommy-time while the children
are entertained. A few we can think of,
are:
Spur (for the obvious reasons)
Panarotti’s at Mimosa Mall (great kids’
menu and cool play area)
Copper Clover (kids eat free on
Tuesdays and the play area is out of this
world)
Greenside Nursery (great kids’ menu
and stunning play area)
Black Sheep Café at The Playground,
Westdene (Yummy food, safe and
Heerlike speelplek by Airborne Café
supervision)
Family fun
Be Human – Middelwater Farm, on the
R30 towards Brandfort, hosts fantastic
family markets each Saturday, with
loads to do for kids. There are animals
to pet, play areas, entertainment, so
much to learn about growing your
own vegetables, and the occasional
horse riding and biking events. Just a
fantastic thing to do with your kids, and
to get outside! Facebook: Be Human –
Middelwater Farm.
Also, don’t forget about the typical
Bloem tradition of visiting the
Boeremark each Saturday at 22 Elias
Motsoaledi Street. There you can buy
affordable hand-made toys, eat delicious
pancakes and boerewors rolls and let
your kids play on the bouncing castles,
slides and other cool inflatables. There’s
also an opportunity to ride on the
donkey cart and kids’ train. Facebook:
Langenhoven Mark/Market.
Arts and culture
Museums are a fantastic way to teach
your children about our history and
other important things about life and
our world. To name a few: Oliewenhuis
Art Museum (while you’re there, do a
picnic and go for a ride on the carousel!),
The National Museum, and the Anglo-
Boer War Museum. Also, for an epic art
experience, book a session with The
Canvas Club (read more about this on
page 46).
Animals and nature
Every parent will concur – seeing real-life
animals gets little kids excited every
time. We start with Bagamoya Wildlife
Estate. It’s a sanctuary for lions offering
tours as well as animal interactions. This
venue also offers accommodation, a
child-friendly restaurant, a children’s play
area and a variety of outdoor activities.
(Contact: 082-497-7550).
Naval Hill, in the heart of Bloemfontien,
forms part of the Franklin Game Reserve.
Visit this popular spot for amazing views
of the city as well as a variety of wildand
birdlife.
The Free State National Botanical
Garden offers a peaceful backdrop for
family picnics. Birds and small creatures
are in abundance… your kids will love it!
The Seven Dams Conservancy is
worth a visit for the purpose of picnics,
walking- and hiking trails, jogging, bird
watching, mountain biking or dog
walking. A kids’ nature paradise.
Beyond the blues
Becoming a new mom can be a wonderful experience, but in the opinion of clinical psychologist,
Lucie Grové, we do not talk enough about what it really means to have a newborn baby. Lucie
writes…
Having my twins was stressful and
initially I felt incompetent and scared
to be a new mom. I experienced a
range of emotions, from joy (holding
them), fear (will I ever be able to raise
them), anger (grieving my freedom and
independence) and helplessness (when
I struggled to soothe them).
These tiny two babies were consuming
all of me and it felt like it was never
going to stop. I did not have any time
for anything else other than feeding
and caring
for them. This
made me
feel isolated,
deprived of
sleep and
exhausted.
I wondered
at times
how two
such small
babies could
overturn
my life so
completely.
I did not
know this
new version
of me: my
body was different, I was different, and
my relationship with my husband was
Dr Lucie Grové with her husband
and adorable twins
different. But as the weeks progressed, I
started to settle into my babies’ routine
and I became less anxious and more
confident in my new role as a mom.
Reflecting back, I realised that leaning
onto my family and friends during this
time made a huge difference.
Accept help
It is ok, moms, to ask for help and to
accept the help. Having somebody else
cook or doing daily household chores
while you focus on your baby can make
a huge difference. You are not a bad
mother, wife or person if somebody else
helps with your baby or household tasks
while you are adjusting to motherhood.
Talk
Talking about my fears helped me
realise that it was ok to be uncertain and
to allow myself the time to settle into
my new role as a mom. I also started
to communicate with my husband
about my experiences and what my
needs were. I realise that he was also
adjusting. Moms, communication is
very important. Don’t assume that your
partner knows
how you feel or
what your needs
are – he doesn’t.
Sleep
Asking for help
with one of
the night feeds
enabled me to get
a little more sleep
at night. I realised
that taking care of
myself was more
important than
trying to control
and do everything
myself. I napped
when they were
sleeping – yes, moms, it is OK to sleep
in the day or to ask somebody to watch
your baby while you are sleeping. Taking
care of yourself is vital. You cannot care
for your baby if you are not ok.
Accept change
I had to accept that my body had
changed and let’s be honest, this was
difficult. My pregnancy clothes were too
big, but there was no way I was going to
fit back into my old favourites. I tried to
make some time for myself. I pampered
myself with small treats, like taking a
bubble bath, enjoying a cup of coffee or
just sitting outside.
For some moms, feelings like those I
experienced do not go away and they
are persistent. Postpartum depression or
anxiety is real. Most of the time women
are so ashamed or guilt-ridden for not
experiencing joy after having a baby,
that they keep quiet until they cannot
cope anymore.
Remember, baby blues is not
postpartum depression or anxiety.
Baby blues is feeling more tearful,
overwhelmed and emotionally fragile
than usual and lasts for only a few days
or weeks after childbirth. Postpartum
depression or anxiety symptoms are
more severe and persist for most of the
time after childbirth, but can develop
anytime within the first 12 months of
having your baby.
If you recognise any two or more of
these symptoms you may be suffering
from postpartum depression or anxiety:
Depression: feeling sad, lonely or
suicidal; feeling overwhelmed with
fatigue; feeling worthless, helpless or
guilty; having no interest in caring for
your baby or feeling completely unable
to; feeling that you are not yourself;
feeling angry or irritable; experiencing
loss of joy, motivation or interest in your
own appearance.
Anxiety: feeling anxious and
overwhelmed with motherhood most
of the time and this feeling does not
go away with reassurance; fear that you
might harm yourself, the baby or others;
having panic attacks or feeling panicky
most of the time; repetitive and intrusive
thoughts of harm coming to your baby
that cause great distress and impact
your ability to care for your baby.
Moms, don’t despair. Postpartum
depression or anxiety can successfully
be treated with medication and
psychotherapy. Please contact your
health care professional to get the
support that you deserve.
Introducing your new baby to your toddler
Deciding what to pack for a hospital
birth is imperative, but if you have
another child it’s also equally important
to decide on a strategy for them on
the big day. It’s also worth laying down
some guidelines for when you return
home so that the transition is effortless
and stress-free.
• Consider giving your toddler a
gift from their new sibling when you
introduce them to each other.
• If your eldest starts behaving
differently, by asking for a dummy for
example, remember that it is normal
and don’t let it stress you out.
• Plan it so that you can read books to
your child while feeding your baby.
• Always include your toddler –
why not ask them to introduce
visitors to their baby brother or sister,
or to unwrap any presents that are
received?
• Although a child shouldn’t be left
alone with a newborn, allow your
eldest to give their sibling some
attention under your supervision.
• Stick to your routine as much as
possible, for your toddler’s sake as
well as your own.
W hen it comes to skin care, we know that
moisture is key. Since launching the iconic
Dove beauty bar over 60 years ago, we’ve
enriched our products with our famous 1/4
moisturising cream and innovative cleansing
technology to gently nourish, replenish and
protect skin. Now, with our baby products,
your little one can enjoy the benefits too!
Your baby’s skin is very different to your own.
Not only is it softer and smoother than yours,
but it’s also much thinner, more sensitive, and
loses water faster than an adult’s skin. It has
fewer lipids and a more acidic pH than adult
skin, which makes it extremely fragile and
susceptible to dryness and damage.
Our unique Baby Dove formulations are built
around our 1/4 moisturising cream. Found
in our baby bar, shampoo, and head-to-toe
washes, the moisturising cream replenishes
essential lipids in the skin’s protective outer
layer which provides a natural defence against
dryness. Instead of soap, our Baby bars
and other cleansing products use our DEFI
technology – an extra-mild cleansing complex
designed to protect the skin’s natural barrier.
When using soap you remove the things you
want to remove such as dirt, but also you remove
natural parts of the skin such as; NMF [Natural
Moisturising Factor], lipids and proteins. Mild
cleansing, such as DEFI technology in Baby
Dove cleansers, help preserve natural lipids and
proteins in your little one’s skin while nourishing
stearic acid (a lipid naturally found in skin)
gently replenishes their skin’s fragile barrier.
Combined with our 1/4 moisturising cream,
essential moisture is sealed in from one bath
time to the next.
You’ll find our 1/4 moisturising cream and DEFI
technology in all Baby Dove cleansers, from
our nourishing Rich Moisture Bar to our Rich
Moisture shampoo and head-to-toe washes.
