of Hope

THE ISSUE
CHILD ABUSE IS NOT an easy topic for
discussion, but it is a tragic epidemic in
the United States and an issue that cannot
be ignored. It is an issue that is somewhat
misunderstood and the severity is unknown
by many.
Every day in America 5 children die from
neglect or abuse. A report of child abuse
is made every 10 seconds however, a
study by the U.S. Government Accountability
Office indicates there is a significant
undercounting from state agencies of
child fatalities due to maltreatment by 50%
or more. More than 80% of the fatalities
were children not yet old enough to enter
kindergarten.
Please take a moment to process that
information. According to Childhelp.org,
“child abuse is when a parent or caregiver,
whether through action or failing to act,
causes injury, death, emotional harm or
risk of serious harm to a child.” There are
many forms of child maltreatment, including
neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse,
exploitation and emotional abuse. And
the majority of this abuse is happening to
children who are physically, mentally, and
emotionally incapable of protecting themselves
due to their young age and a lack of
resources.
This is why Multifamily Leadership has
chosen to work with Childhelp® to take
a stand against this unfathomable tragedy
and we hope you will help us fight
this injustice for those who cannot fight
it on their own.
THE HISTORY
In 1952, two actresses starring in The
Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet met
and became fast friends. Sara O’Meara
and Yvonne Fedderson were then
chosen to travel to Japan in 1959 to
entertain American soldiers on a goodwill
tour during the Korean War. It was
during this trip the two young actresses
stumbled upon a group of 11 huddled,
orphaned children and took immediate
action to find them safe shelter.
That one, brave act of kindness fueled
these two incredible women to begin
a tireless lifetime crusade to provide
treatment to abused and neglected
children and to prevent child abuse
by founding Childhelp, a national
non-profit organization headquartered
in Phoenix, Arizona. To this day, over 10
million children have been impacted by
Childhelp and their mission will continue
until every child is safe.

Rosevelt Rawls is a Youth Ambassador
for Childhelp and has
single-handedly helped raise
over $10,000 for this organization,
with some of those donations
coming from within the
multifamily industry after her
performance at the Multifamily
Women’s Summit in Scottsdale.
Rosevelt is only 12 years old
however, she has dedicated her
talent and ambition to helping
abused children nationwide. We
are so proud to be a part of Rosevelt’s
