Istos Lights catalogue
‘Istos Lights’ by Froso Papadimitriou are an exclusive series of table lamps, each one a distinctive signature of the artist, handcrafted in her studios in London UK and in Sitia, a small town in the northeast of Crete in Greece.
The material of the lampshades derives from two years experimentation and is a combination of eco-friendly polymers. This material exhibits glass-like qualities such as translucency and texture, however it is very light-weight, durable and flexible.
The material is initially in liquid form and the colouration by hand takes place either during the curing process or after the material has dried solid. During the first process the colouration is much less controlled and the patterns are formed by an abstract gestural manner, forming a unique design for each lamp. The second colour process resembles fine art brush painting techniques and therefore it is also unique to each lampshade.
Once dried and coloured the material is fortified with an inner layer of a Lighting Association certified eco-friendly polymer* complying with the British Standards of Luminaries.
The lamps are finalised with the material being hand-sewn in original shapes and matched with lamp bases. These are mainly sourced from different charities, to support their cause and promote a recycling ethos and they are all electrically tested by them. The lamp bases are either used as they are bought or decorated with relief designs and paint.
