Podcasting Social Work: Committed to Innovate
and Revolutionize Teaching & Learning
Centennial College has a strong mandate for using
technology in teaching and learning in order to
educate students for career success. Dr. Hasan
Mahbub recently launched an innovative podcasting
project to do just that for his students in the Social
Service Worker program. Entitled “Podcast for
Effective Teaching and Learning”, Hasan initiated
this project as part of his new faculty orientation.
As an educator, Hasan is very passionate about using
technology in his teaching, and found that podcasting
has become an important learning and teaching tool,
especially in a higher education environment. Hasan
explained, “It’s an opportunity to learn something new
in the area of teaching and learning that will benefit
educators, learners, and the wider community”.
The project has been beneficial to both Hasan and
students, allowing Hasan to become more innovative
and to think out of the box, while students have
become familiar with the technological set-up, relevant
apps and editing skills.
When he began the eight-week project in January
2019, he established a podcast focused on issues,
social work practices, and teaching pedagogy with the
following objectives:
1. To develop knowledge about podcasts,
especially how to use various types of
podcasts for effective teaching and learning;
2. To develop moderation and technical skills
for creating a podcast;
3. To identify and utilize resources for creating
a podcast; and,
4. To create a 15- 20 minute podcast by
February 2019.
