JohnwasahugeinspirationtomesoIwasrealynervous whilewaitingforhimtocalme.WaitingonSkype,Johneven- withCameo,PatiLaBele,andPrince.Attheageof18while becauseitseemedsounrealthatIwasspeakingtohim.I hewas,thedrummerIhadlookeduptoformanyyears.He apologizedwhilelaughingthathedidn’thavehiscameraon straightawaybecausehehadjustwokenupanddidn’thave Berklee,soyoubeterbesure”.Johnknowingthatthiswas ashirton.Webegantalkingstraightawayasifwewereold schoolmatesthatweremerelycatchingup. HearingJohn’scareerstoriesfromthemanhimselfwastruly Johnbegantotelmeaboutthenextstepinhiscareer,which inspirational.Johnwasaseriousdrummerandmusicianand tualycaledme.Atfirst,hiscamerawasn’tonsoIwaswon- studyingatBerkleehereceivedacalfromLaryBlackmon deringtomyselfifthiswasactualytherealJohnBlackwel recognizedhisvoicebecauseIhadwatchedsomanyinterviewsandlesonsofhis.Heturnedhiscameraonandthere gigwithCameo.Hisdad'sresponsewasthis:“Son,ifyou heworkedwithsomeofthebiggestartistsinthemusicin- thatwilblowyouaway. MiguelMonroy liketojoinherband.Beingtheloyalandcommitedperson Johnwas,hewenttoLaryfromCameoandtoldhimthathe gotoferedthegigwithPatibutwasn’tgoingtotakethegig withherbecausehewascommitedtoCameoanddidn’t wanttoleavehisbrothersandthatCameowasthereason hewaswherehewas.LarywasadamantthatJohnneeded totakethegigwithPatibecauseheknewthatthiswasthe nenextstepforthisamazingdrummerandexplainedtoJohn thatCameocouldn’ttakehimanyfurtheranditwastimefor himtolevelup.Johnarguedwithhimandtoldhimhecould notleaveCameo.Laryeventualyaskedhimifhewould havetakenthegigwithPatifhedidn’thaveacommitment toCameo.Johntoldhimthathewoulddefinitelyhavetaken thegigwithoutadoubt.LaryfiredJohnonthespotandtold himthathecouldnowtakethegigwith himthathecouldnowtakethegigwithPatibecauseheno longerplaysforCameo.Nothavingagiganymore,Johnwas “forced”totakethegigwithPatiandfromthismoment John’scareerexploded. HewastelingmeaboutagiginNewYorkhewasplaying withPati.Whilehewasplayinghesaidthathecouldfeel eyesonhimthewholetime.Feelingveryuncomfortablehe turnedhisheadtothesideofthestageandhesawPrince staringathim.Johnlaughedwhiletelingmethathealmost freakedoutandhadtokeeptelinghimselftorelaxandnot overplay.ThiswasPrinceattheendofthedayandI don’tthinkanythingcouldprepareyouforthosetypeof eyesstaringyoudown.Themomenttheperformance endedPrincecamestraightuptoJohnandsaidthathe wouldlikehimtocomehaveajamathisstudiobutonly oncehistourwasoverbecausehewasn’toferinghima gig,butonlywantedtohaveacasualjam.Princeexplainedthatheo plainedthatheofereddrummersthesameopportunity inthepastandthesedrummerscanceledtheirtoursbecausetheythoughthewasoferingthemagigandwere highlydisappointedwhentheyfoundoutitwasjustajam sesionandthatwasit.TheyneversawPrinceagain. Johnobviouslytookadvantageofthisoncehistourwas overandflewovertoPrince'sstudio.HemetPrinceinthe studioandtheybegantojamfreely.Acouplehourswent byandPrinceputhisbasdownandsaid“Okthanksfor coming,that’sit”.Johnsaidthathewasshockedand thoughttohimselfthattherewasnowaythatitwasgoing toendlikethis.Johnplayedmethegroovefromhislaptop thatactual thatactualygothimthegigwithPrince.Thisgroovewas programmedandinPrince'smind,nohumandrummer couldplaythisgroovebutJohnhadpracticeditandhadit down.AsPrincewaswalkingoutthestudio,Johnbegan playingthisgrooveandhesaidPrinceimmediately
