Iremembermyfirstkitcame withaVHSdemotapefeaturingMikePortnoyandso, beingoneofthefirstrealy gooddrummersIwasexposedto,hejustblewmy mind.Hewasamassivein fluenceforafewyearsbut whenIsawJohnBlackwel playitchangedeverything forme.Myapproachto drumschangedsomuchasI tried(badly)tocopyalhis groovesandfilsanduse themin theminmyplaying.Indoing that,Istartedrealytrying tolearnhowhemadethose groovessoundandfeelso good. Whowereyourmaininfluenceswhenyougot intoplayingandwhoare yourcurentinfluences? Thesedays,I’mrealyinto drummerslikeMarkGuiliana,ChrisDave,Spankyand JPBouvet,alfordiferent reasonsbuttheguysthatI getinspiredbyalotareactualymymusicianfriends, likemybandmatesinDie GevaarandDieHeuwels, FredDenHartogand AndrewDavenportinThieve andthendrummerslike Howdidyoulandthegig withFrancoisvanCoke andDieHeuwelsFantastiesandwhodidyou playforbefore? Iplayedforafewbandsin Durbanandoneofthemwas FireThroughTheWindow. Westartedtouringabitand throughthis,Imettheguys from AshtrayElectric.Soa fewmonthsafterImovedto CaCapeTown,theywere Jstar,DarenPetersen,and WernerVonWaltzleben. Telusaboutyour“YOKO” brand? The“brand”,sotospeak, didn’tstartoutonpurpose.I neededalogoformyPromark stickandsoImadesome ‘YOKO’shirtstohelppromote it.I’vebeenwantingtoget myownclothingbrand startedforawhileandso itwaskindofwritenon thewalstojustgiveitago whenpeopleactualyliked theshirts.“YOKO”wilbe laun launchedonlinesoonwith mainlyT-shirtsandsweatshirtsbutit’sgoingtobe quiteacolaborativeefort andI’mrealyexcitedto seewhereit’lgo.It’s somethingnewformebut lookoutforitlaterthis year. Beingontheroadalot withacoupleofbusyacts, howdoyoumanagethem al? It’snotalwayseasybutI’ve Wayde Flowerday startedtouringin2015and it’sbeenawildridesince then.Ilovealtheguysin bothbandsandit’salwaysa greattimetravelingand playingwiththem. “Werehearsedfor lessthen2 hoursandthe nextdaywe playedforlike 4000people” lookingforadrummerand gavemeacal.Iendedup playingforAshtrayElectric forabout2years.Iplayed forasmanybandsasIcould from2011-2013,whichwas whenIfirstgotaskedtofil ininforashowwithDieHuewels.Ilaterfoundoutthat somefriendshadrecommendedmeforthegigsoit wasapretybigsurprised.I mettheguysforthefirst timeadaybeforetheshow, werehearsedforlessthan2 hoursandthenextdaywe playedforlike4000people. Ihadworkedsohardon learningtheirtracksin dedepthsowhentheshow wentdownwel,Iwassuper stoked.Whentheirdrummer atthetimeleftthenextyear, Iwasluckyenoughtoget thecalagainandthenI startedtouringwiththemin April2014 AcoupleofmonthsafterI startedplayingforDHF,Igot acalfromFrancoistogo andrecord“MoointlikNooit” withhimandJedd.Wekept intouchthroughouttheyear andthenIendeduprecordingthefi ingthefirstalbumwithhim attheendof2014.We
