Maternal Intuition of Fetal Gender Article Published in Gannet Newspapers

I was a lead author in a study testing if mom's can actually determine their unborn baby's gender with any accuracy. It was a fun project with some predictable results. According to my Author's Dashboard it's been downloaded almost 5000 times (not just read but downloaded) including places like Oman, Nepal, Malaysia, Jakarta; and including such entities as the European Court of Justice, National Health Service, the FBI, Agency of Health Care Policy & Research, EPA, NASA, Dow Jones, Mayo Clinic and too many others to mention. It really has me scratching my head. My co-authors understand the numerous downloads in the US and Europe but can only speculate on the interest in India, the Middle-East, Malaysia and various government entities. The preponderance of downloads might have something to do with patriarchal societies in which males have predominate roles.

Sheboygan mothers tried to predict

their baby’s gender. Their intuition

was no better than a coin flip.

SHEBOYGAN – Chinese calendars, a

mother’s dreams and family patterns

have all been used by Sheboygan women

to determine the gender of their babies.

But how well can a mother determine

what her baby will be on her own?

Michael McFazden, a registered diagnostic

medical sonographer in obstetrics

at Aurora Health Care in Sheboygan,

wanted to find out.

“A lot of women felt very strongly,”

McFazden said. “They had a very strong

perception of the gender.”

At first, McFazden and his team started

tracking the women’s predictions anecdotally,

but went on to design and execute

a study to determine how accurate

expecting mothers were in predicting

their baby’s gender. Women were asked

to participate at their second trimester

Google is collecting personal health records of

millions of Americans who receive medical care from

Ascension Health — Wisconsin’s second-largest

health provider — according to a Wall Street Journal

report.

The St. Louis-based Ascension operates 23 hospitals

and over 110 clinics in Wisconsin, according to

the Catholic nonprofit’s website. Its areas of care include

much of the east and central parts of the state

from Eagle River to Racine.

Data collection for Project Nightingale, as the effort

has been code-named, began last year and accelerated

over the summer, according to the Journal. It

includes lab results, hospitalization records and doctor

diagnoses, as well as personal identifiers.

Neither patients or doctors had been notified of

the data-sharing, the Journal reported.
