Xavier College is a Catholic school founded by the Society of Jesus
(the Jesuits). Its guiding principles are based on the vision and
teachings of St Ignatius of Loyola.
The College fi rst opened on Barkers Road in 1878 and to this day
enlightens generations of fi ne young men and women. Home to the
iconic Xavier Memorial Chapel, the Senior Campus is a culmination
of modern innovation and rich historical preservation.
Two further locations, Burke Hall Campus in Kew and Kostka Hall
Campus in Brighton, accommodate Xavier’s Early and Middle
Years students.
Xavier College enrols both girls and boys up until Year 4 and offers a
boys-only environment from Year 5 through to Year 12.
Boarding has been a part of the College since it fi rst opened its
doors over 140 years ago. The boarding house is located at the
very heart of the Senior Campus, meaning that students are fully
engaged with College life.
Embedded within the philosophy of a Jesuit education is a
commitment to service. The Ignatian Service program encourages
students to be ‘Men and Women for Others’. Students at Xavier
are continuously encouraged to utilise their God-given gifts to be of
service to the community.
Xavier College is a high performing academic school and has been
consistently ranked within the top secondary schools in the state.
Students are supported in an environment where they can fl ourish
and passionately pursue excellence in all things.
Alongside traditional curriculum offerings, broad opportunities exist
for the education of the whole person, which is central to a Jesuit
education. Students are afforded opportunities to travel overseas on
a range of language, music, leadership, faith and service tours.
As a Jesuit school, Xavier College strives to embrace innovative ways
of teaching and learning. Principal Mr William Doherty says that in
order to prepare for the future, we must continually discern and refl ect
on our reality.
“While Xavier has been educating children in Melbourne for 140
years, it is our capacity to continue to ask the questions pertinent to
our modern world, to pursue excellence in the present, and to discern
both truth and innovation to serve the needs of others into the future,”
he said.
“The College actively seeks to collaborate with world-credentialed
programs, tertiary institutions and other learning systems to positively
inform our practice, inspire our learning and learners, nurture
their wellbeing and fi re their imagination to create, connect and
communicate, and to make a difference in their world”.
Xavier College offers Digital Technologies classes from the Early Years
through to VCE. An established STEM program, including a tour to
NASA in the US last year, provides students with the opportunity to
learn practical skills and knowledge through coding and robotics.
To help students plan for the future, a comprehensive careers program
provides guidance, counselling and tertiary information. In Year 10, all
students undergo career aptitude testing to help them make more
informed subject choices moving into VCE.
Inherent to Xavier is the importance of serving and contributing to
the wider community. Students care for others in aged care facilities,
specialist schools and charity organisations through the Ignatian
Service program, working towards creating a better future for those
living on the margins. After students leave the College, they are
encouraged to continue their volunteer work through the Xavier Social
Justice Network.
