Vision Statement
Addressing the lifelong leisure needs of all Vernon Hills residents.
Dear Vernon Hills Residents,
It’s the time of year for making New Year’s Resolutions. Whether yours is to explore the outdoors, commit to get fit, or
investigate a new hobby, the Park District is your place to make it happen in 2020!
Mission Statement
To promote diverse community based recreational
opportunities by providing a variety of programs,
services, facilities, and natural spaces to
enhance the quality of life for
our residents.
Have you visited Lakeview Fitness? This is a great place to start those resolutions. I invite you to spend a day at the facility; swim and splash in the pool, warm up
from the winter’s chill in the sauna, steam room, or hot tub, and take a fitness class too. Take advantage of our “Fit in 5” promotion and purchase a 5-month membership
from January 1-7, and get fit by summer!
The Sullivan Community Center’s landscape is under construction! The Hawthorn District 73 Kindergarten Center is being built between the Aspen Drive Library and the Sullivan
Community Center, with a tunneled access directly to the Sullivan Center. The Kindergarten Center will open to new students in fall 2020. For more information, visit the District 73
website at www.hawthorn73.org.
Don’t let the winter weather keep your family indoors! The Century Park ice rinks and sled hill will be lit daily until 9 pm for evening fun, weather permitting! An afternoon of sledding,
skating, or using the miles of pathways through our parks for hiking, cross country skiing, or just a leisurely walk is the perfect activity for a winter day, so come out and enjoy!
The Park District has many special events planned this winter beginning with Water Wonderland, a pool party for all ages on December 20 followed by our New Year’s Eve Family Party
on December 31. The fun continues for families at Winter Fest on January 11. Just the Two of Us, a special evening of dancing for dads and daughters is February 8, and an adventure
awaits moms and sons on March 20 at You’re My Superhero! Just for adults, our Annual Craft Beer Tasting event is on February 29. Listen to live music while Chicago area breweries
pour samples of their ales, lagers, and stouts.
On behalf of the Board of Commissioners, I wish you a happy holiday season and an enjoyable winter in the parks.
Board Meetings
The District is governed by five elected Commissioners
who set policy for the operation of the Park District. Park
Board meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each
month at 6:30 pm at the Sullivan Community Center,
635 N. Aspen Drive, unless otherwise posted. Please call
or visit us online at www.vhparkdistrict.org to confirm
the dates or times. Meetings are open to the public and
residents are invited to share comments or suggestions
during the appropriate time as listed on the agenda.
Illinois Distinguished Accredited Agency 2018-2023
Vernon Hills Park District is recognized as an Illinois Distinguished
Accredited Agency 2018-2023 by the Illinois Association of Park
Districts and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association. The
two statewide associations administer the Illinois Distinguished
Accreditation program with the goal of improving the delivery of
park and recreation services to Illinois residents. It is a voluntary,
comprehensive evaluation process to demonstrate that agencies
have met state guidelines to provide exceptional services to their
community. Only 15% of Park Districts receive this accreditation.
2019 Gold Medal Award Finalist
Vernon Hills Park District is proud to be a finalist
for the 2019 National Gold Medal Awards for
Excellence in Park and Recreation Management.

The Pavilion will only be open when the ice rinks and/or sled hill are open. Check
the weather hotline for updates. The warming shelter, Century Park Pavilion, will
be staffed on weekends, December 7 through March 22, from 1-9 pm.
Free loaner skates are available. Quantities are limited, so all sizes may not be
Make a donation!
SWALCO Reuse-A-Shoe
Donate shoes of all types*, sizes, and conditions. Of all
the materials collected, 95% or more will be recycled
or reused, and you can be a part of this great effort!
Center.
*Rollerblades, ice skates, and winter boots cannot be
Winter Season Toys for Tots
Help millions of less fortunate children share in the
magic of the holidays. Local Toys for Tots Campaigns are
the heart and soul of the Marine Toys for Tots Program
managed by dedicated United States Marines and local
volunteers. Collection boxes are located at the Sullivan
Community Center and Lakeview Fitness during the
holiday season. New, unwrapped toys can be dropped
off until mid-December.
Vernon Township Food Pantry
The Vernon Township Food Pantry provides nutritionally
balanced food to township individuals and families who
are in need of assistance. The collection box is located in
the Sullivan Community Center. Accepted items include
non-perishable goods, cleaning supplies, and personal
hygiene products.
Lions Recycle For Sight Program
Help the Lions Club reduce global blindness. Refractive
errors can be easily corrected with eyeglasses, yet
millions living in low and middle income countries lack
access to basic eye care services. Lions have recognized
the urgent need for corrective lenses and collect usable
glasses in their communities. The collection box is
located in the Family Aquatic Center circle drive. It
resembles a mailbox.
Clothing and Textiles Recycling
SWALCO has established a new community-wide
program where clothing and textiles can be collected
for recycling. The program will accept new, gently used,
used or unwanted/worn, women’s, men’s and children’s
clothing and textiles. All fabrics will be accepted. Almost
95% of the materials collected will be repurposed or
recycled! The collection box is located near the skate
park at the Sullivan Community Center.
Sports Shed
The Sports Shed makes it possible for kids to have
positive alternatives to gangs, violence, and drugs
through organized sports. Donate new or used gear
including equipment, apparel/uniforms, or athletic
footwear. The collection box is located in the Sullivan
Community Center.
The goal of the Park District’s swim program is to create a life-long interest in aquatics
activities, promote a healthy lifestyle, and improve a child’s safety in the water.
Lessons follow the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim guidelines. Taught by instructors
who are certified lifeguards, our lessons feature progressive swimming instruction and
practice of water safety skills. Upon successful completion of each level, swimmers will
receive an American Red Cross certificate.
Select the Right Class
Before Class
Review the skill lists on vhparkdistrict.org. Choose the first class that lists a skill
that your child has not yet mastered.
First Day of Class
Your child's skills will be assessed on the first day of class to ensure that they
are placed in the proper level. Adjustments will be made if necessary. Swimming
requires motor coordination and practice to become proficient.
Keep in Mind
It is not uncommon to spend more than one session in a particular level. This
is especially true with levels 2, 3 and 4. Therefore, do not expect your child to
automatically advance to the next level at the end of a session.
Questions
If you are unsure about your child’s abilities or have questions about the
different courses or swim class policies, contact Robert Wood, Aquatic
Supervisor, at (847) 996-3488.
experimentation with everyone's favorite polar molecule... WATER! We'll also see how
cells of living organisms (like ours and our microorganism frenemies) use polar forces
to build protection. This will be visualized through the making of slime! So, come join
Team Formation
All teams are formed by a coach’s draft. Players
are measured for height and evaluated at the
Skill Evaluation Day. This information is provided
to coaches to select teams. Because of the draft
process, no coach or teammate requests will be
considered. The only way to guarantee that two kids
are placed on the same team is if their parents sign
up to coach together. Players are required to attend
skill day. Those that do not attend skill day will not be
eligible for the coaches draft. They will be randomly
assigned to a team.
Practice
Teams practice 1-2 hours per week at various schools.
Practice times can be as early as 6:00 pm and go
as late as 9:00 pm (8:30 pm for 3rd & 4th grade
teams). Practice schedules are dictated by coaches;
therefore, specific practice schedule requests cannot
be honored. (If there is ONE specific day of the week
that your child will not be available to practice, please
note on registration).
All players will receive a team jersey and
participation medal.
Boys trying out for VHCYAA Feeder Basketball
This program is committed to the development of both individual and team skills for
boys in grades 4 through 8 that plan on attending Vernon Hills High School. We are an
organized competitive program that competes against similarly organized teams. Tryouts
for the 2019-2020 season will take place early October. For more information please visit
vhcougars.com
The Park District realizes that tryouts and team selection for feeder basketball are after
our registration deadline but before practices/games begin. Players are encouraged
to register for the Park District league and attend Skill Evaluation day. If you make the
feeder team, and decide not to play both feeder and Park District, as long as a refund is
requested prior to our team selection, you will receive a refund of the full league fee. Do
not wait until after the feeder team has been selected or you will be subject to the late
registration fee.
Vernon Hills Lady Cougars Feeder Basketball
This program provides an opportunity for girls that will attend Vernon Hills High School
to participate in an organized competitive basketball program for grades 5 through 8,
against similarly organized teams. Tryouts for the 2019-2020 season will take place in
late September and/or early October. For more information, visit www.VHHSFeeder.com.
Boys & Girls 1st & 2nd Grade
FUN! A smaller court, lower hoops and junior sized basketball will be used.
Players will attend a skill evaluation clinic on January 4. After this introductory meeting, players will be divided into teams and schedules will be distributed. The first team meeting
on January 18 will be a one-hour practice; the subsequent eight sessions will consist of a 30-minute practice followed by a game. All practices/games will be held on Saturday
mornings. All players will receive a team jersey and participation medal.
Americans With Disabilities
The Vernon Hills Park District will comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA),
which prohibits discrimination in the provision of programs, services, or activities to
individuals with disabilities. We invite any participant with a special need to contact
our staff or our SRA staff, upon registration, so that a smooth inclusion can occur. If you
have any questions regarding the Park District’s ADA policy, or believe you have been
unfairly discriminated against in the provision of programs, services, or activities of the
Vernon Hills Park District, please contact the District ADA Compliance Officer, Tom Ritter
by mail at 635 N. Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills, IL 60061 or by telephone at 847-996-6802.
For the deaf or hearing-impaired, call the Illinois Relay Center voice only operator at
(800) 526-0857.
Food Allergy Policy
The Park District will attempt to accommodate each program participant who has a
food allergy in order to provide the safest learning environment possible. A Food Allergy
Action Plan will be created by the District staff and parents and will identify operational
practices for parents, teachers, and children to follow. For a copy of the Food Allergy
Policy, contact Tom Ritter, Superintendent of Recreation, at (847) 996-6802.
No Smoking Policy
In addition to the Smoke Free Illinois Act, the entire Park District which includes all
facilities, buildings, parks, streets, paths, open space and all waters, is designated as
tobacco free.
Age Qualification
The District establishes appropriate age qualifications for each of its programs.
Only the program supervisor is authorized to make exceptions to these age ranges.
Consideration will only be given once all age-appropriate participants have had an
opportunity to register.
Payment Policy
Households with an unpaid balance will not be allowed to register for any Vernon Hills
Park District programs, activities, memberships, or rentals until the balance is paid in
full. For assistance with an unpaid balance contact the Business Operations Manager at
(847) 996-6803.
Resident/Non-Resident (NR) Fees
Vernon Hills residents significantly contribute to the operating budget of the Park
District by paying property taxes. Everyone who resides within the boundaries of the
Park District are eligible to receive resident discounted rates. Once per year, each
Vernon Hills household is required to show proof of residency in order to qualify for
resident rates. Families living within Hawthorn School District #73 are also eligible
to receive resident discounted rates for programs, Lakeview Fitness memberships,
and Lakeview Fitness daily passes. The only exceptions are facility rentals and daily
admission to the Family Aquatic Center. In addition, District 73 residents must wait until
the non-resident registration dates to register for programs. Non-resident fees are the
second fees shown in program descriptions. These rates are not discounted and are
necessary in order to ensure that non-resident participants contribute to the overall
financing of the park system on an equitable basis with residents.
Senior Citizen Discount
Senior discounts are available for individual passes and membership to our Fitness
Center for residents aged 62 & older. For all other programs and the Family Aquatic
Center, a 20% discount will be applied.
Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) Policy
A $25 service charge will be assessed on all checks returned due to non-sufficient
funds.
Photo & Video Policy
The District occasionally takes photographs or video of participants for promoting/
advertising our programs, services, events, activities, and facilities in our brochures,
website or agency social media, and other promotional avenues. By registering
for, participating in or attending District programs, events, or other activities, the
participant (or parent/guardian of a minor participant) irrevocably agrees to the use
and distribution by the Park District of his or her image (or of his minor child/ward)
in photographs, video recordings, and any other electronic reproductions of such
programs, events and activities for any purpose without inspection or approval and
without compensation, rights to royalties or any other consideration now and in the
future.
Residents are encouraged to submit photos for the Park District to use in its
informational materials. To submit a photo, email Cassidy Reinhard, Marketing
Specialist, at cassidyr@vhparkdistrict.org.
Vandalism
Each year, vandalism costs the Park District thousands of dollars. Higher costs of
maintenance, repair and clean up of park areas can be avoided only with your help.
Should you see vandalism occurring, please call the Vernon Hills Police at (847) 362-
4449.
Discipline
A positive approach is used regarding discipline. Staff periodically reviews rules with
participants during programs. If inappropriate or unacceptable behavior occurs, prompt
resolution will be sought and the District Behavior Management Policy (2.39) will be
used as a guideline. The Park District reserves the right to remove a participant whose
actions endanger the safety of himself or others.
Notary Public Services
Notary public services are available at the Sullivan Community Center. Please
remember that documents must be signed in the presence of the Notary Public.
